Restore time machine fails - files in use by another app
Situation: I am trying to get my files off my broken LaCie external drive(no longer mounts, unable to be fixed in Disk Utility) .
This is what I did:
a. I select all the files in Time machine.
b. I click restore, they "come forward".
c. A window comes up saying "blank" (meaning the first file in the list) cannot be opened because it is in use by another app.
d. I tried selecting just one file vice all the files, same thing.
It is a major tease that I can see the files, but are they just ghosts?!
Additional info: I am scanning with Disk Drill for the last hour, NOTHING found on the drive. How could almost 350gb of files disappear? Now it says no recoverable data found.
Disk Utility lists the drive, but it is greyed out and therefore unable to be fixed in any way).
Also, Disk Warrior also says the disk is in use (by what?), and cannot continue to rebuild the drive. Error codes given: 2153 and 4903.
I do believe I am hosed.

I'm staring to suspect that it might be some underlying library that firefox uses that's caused it. I just tried 3.0.12 and that's behaving bizzarley too.
With that I get some console output at least, not sure if it's much help.

IPod cannot be updated/restored/ejected--files in use by another app
Since I downloaded iTunes7, I cannot update, restore, or eject my iPod from iTunes. I get the error "<iPod name> cannot be updated(restored, ejected) because it contains files in use by another application." I'm still able to sync music and tv shows with the old iPod software, but not movies. I eject it using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in my system tray, or from My Computer. I've tried disabling security programs and peripherals, and even sifting through the processes in Task Manager. I had no trouble ejecting prior to iTunes 7/7.0.1.
And yes, I've done the R's I'm able to do (Restore is not an option due to the nature of the error).Hi again, Corey!
In regard to "recovery mode" message, you'll most likely just need to restore your iPod. For more details, read here -> Restoring your iPod
If this message persists after restoring your iPod, try assigning your iPod a different drive letter; see these steps below:
Log off of any other users on your computer.
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).

How do I restore time machine alias files cloned from broken hard drive
My external hard drive broke (a tiny transistor broke off after the drive fell two feet to the floor) so I purchased a new one and had the Geek Squad clone what was on my old hard drive onto my new one. I was using Time Machine to backup my files. My external hard drive had a much larger capacity than my macbook pro, so I deleted a number of the files saved on my Macbook Pro, knowing that I could access my files whenever I plugged my ext. hard drive in.
After plugging my new external hard drive into my computer, however, I am finding only alias files and I do not know how to restore my data so I can access all of the files again.
Does anyone know how to restore my time machine data from the cloned data I had transferred from my broken external hard drive to my new external hard drive?

Why pay them to do what you don't need done??? Get a refund and buy an enclosure, which you should have anyway for backups.
but I'm now wishing that I had received more sound advice when I brought the drives into them in the first place.
Don't know who gave you that advice, but I sure wouldn't trust them with my data!
The Apple rep. informed me that my HD works perfectly fine and that it just needs a new enclosure (which I can buy for $20 online, as opposed to paying $100 for a data transfer).

How do I restore Time Machine backup files (from TC) to an external HD?
I did a full Time Machine backup of my machine to a Time Capsule. All told, around 500GB. The MBP to which I'd like to transfer the files doesn't have a big enough hard drive. However, I do have a 1TB External HD that I could use. Can I use Time Machine or Migration Assistant to move/access the files? I'm using Lion.

I'm trying to restore time machine backup files that I copied from one hard drive to another. After reading some posts it looks like I might have made a mistake in thinking I could just drag and drop the files. I have the files all starting with cpbfxxxxxxxxxxx. I would like to put them back into time machine but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

If you copied files from one disk to another, they should still exist on the first disk, unless you deleted them.
Please clarify what you did or want to do: did you copy from your backups to a different disk? Or from one disk to another?
What is your setup: what drives are being backed-up to where? -
I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
I hope someone can help.

How do I restore Time Machine of my iMac Apps & Files to my MacBook?
My situation:
I have 2 computers (iMac and MacBook Pro).
My MacBook Pro has a suite of software that I cannot transfer to my iMac. Why? Because the liscencing was computer specific (foolish me for thinking I could use one lisnence and have it used on one machine meant that I could unregister the former and register the other machine).
My iMac has Time Machine backups. I recently lost anything and everything purchased on iTunes. I now have that restored thanks to iTunes Support. The now up to date Time Machine backup files are up to date and regular for my iMac.
*The Situation*
My iMac had a harddrive failure. It was replaced twice. then the graphics card failed. It was replaced. So I finally get my iMac back yesterday, now it makes a High Pitch SQUEEEEL!
iMac is back at Apple Store. I was polite.
*What I Want to Happen*
I want to move my iTunes and all my other documents over to my MacBook, via the Time Machine backup.
*What Happened*
Following the instructions found on this forum and the apple troubleshooting/faq sections for Time Machine, it transfered.
*My Issue*
After the little progress meter finished, I cant find the files.
Now my computer directory looks stupid with (copy of copy of copy of copy of MacHDD)
*My Request*
Type of Help that Could Work for Me:
1. Tell me where the files are?
2. Tell me how I should set up my files and time machine and stuff!
3. or, if the above is not possible buy my computers from me, give me CDs and DVDs of my music, movies, and documents.PowerfulLamp wrote:

Assuming MacHDD is the name of one of the internal HDs, it does sound like you did the transfer incorrectly.
1. Tell me where the files are?
Probably in one or more of those copies of MacHDD.
2. Tell me how I should set up my files and time machine and stuff!
That's going to depend on exactly what's where, and what you want to do:
Do you want to erase everything on the MacBook and copy everything from the iMac's backups, or do you have things on the MacBook that you want to keep?
When you got the second Mac, did you set it up from the other one? If you did, then you should have identical user accounts on both Macs (they may have different data, but the exact same names and passwords).
And, do you have an iTunes library, and/or the other files you want to move, in the same places on both Macs? -
When restoring Time Machine after a failure, does it also restore the files to the same order, for example - within iPhoto I have pics/ videos in folders and sub folders organised as family/events etc - will it go back to this exact order after a restore?

Restored Time Machine Backup, now can't find files
So, after a wipe of my computer and a reinstall of Snow Leopard, I encountered a couple problems restoring my data.
1) Migration Assistant wouldn't find my user in my time machine (which was only used for this computer)
2) I resorted to the "browse other time machine disks" feature by right clicking the Time Machine icon in the dock. From this I was easily able to find my backup and restore it.
After the files finished copying (approx. 254 gb), I was unable to find them anywhere on the drive. Finder and Disk Utility both told me that there was 254 gigs being used (that wasn't being used before, this is a clean snow Leopard install), I just can't find them anywhere.
I went to disk utility do verify permissions, it looks like there was some problems, so I repaired them, still no luck. I also logged in as root to see if I could spot them anywhere, no luck.
Can anybody out there point me in the right direction?

Do you mean they installed Snow Leopard, and didn't give you a Snow Leopard disc? If so, that's a violation of the license, but worse, it means you can't do some things you may need to do, including a full system restore of a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup. Either make them put Leopard back on it, or buy a retail Snow Leopard disc ($29).
They also installed iLife '09 and I believe I actually had '08 on there.

I did exactly what happened above - tried restoring from my Time Machine backup and ended up using 320GB that I now can't find. When I try to restore individual files I get the message that a file with the same name already exists. Is it possible to restore my files but KEEP this later version of OSX and iLife?

You can't, and shouldn't, without the necessary discs. Those versions of iLife probably won't work on Leopard anyway.

The full restore will do that. The first thing it does, after your final confirmation, is to erase the internal HD. Then it copies everything from your backups.

The HD failure is a good clue. Most likely, it didn't fail all at once (BAM!), but failed gradually, corrupting some things in the process. That corruption got backed-up, so the last backup(s) had the damaged files.

I've been searching for some time now and have encountered some contradictory answers, so I turn to you.
I would like to know if it's possible (one) and safe (two) to use a single partition for both Time Machine and file storage. I've read that this should be ok, since TM is actually only a single folder, which means the rest can easily be used as a standard Finder drive. Some people say however that this is not good to do so, because TM will run out of space quicker. But if the -let's say- 30Gb used for files where used by TM after a month, that would be the same, wouldn't it ? It would simply erase older backups. But is it safe to do so ? Will Time Machine not makes errors when accessing files or doing an entire system backup ? I don't won't to make a new partition really, that's why I'm asking you here, to let me know some arguments about it.

Oh, yes folks have tried it. That's why I (and many others) recommended against it.

I probably should have asked you what you mean by "safe." If you mean, will TM delete other files on it's partition, no, it won't. If you mean, can there be problems, then yes, there can be conflicts and difficulties, as mentioned.
As to whether TM backups are simple folders, no, they aren't. They look like normal files and folders, but they actually contain what are variously called "hard links," "multi-links," and (my own personal favorite term) "ghost clones." Think of them as very fancy aliases. So they're not to be fooled with directly, by us mere mortals.

You should also know that, for some reason, TM stores it's backups differently when it does them wirelessly. In that case, they're in a "SparseBundle," very different from the structure used for directly-attached backups.
All the more reason to put each Mac's backups in a separate partition, and if you want to store other data there also, a 3rd partition for that.

Mac Mini late 2012 Failed to Restore Time Machine Backup
Try to restore time machine backup to my mac mini. I have made backup right after I got the machine from apple. Now due to some reason I am trying to restore it but failing again and again. Error is something like this:

I am backing up my Macs to a disk connected to my Airport Extreme. It's been working for months without any problems. Other than this morning. Time Machine buddy had the following message:
