Restore Time Machine from WD My Cloud (a network drive)

Good morning. I recently had my hard drive replaced on my iMac. I had been using My Cloud as the repository for my Time Machine backups. When I started my iMac when I got it home, it is not recognizing where the Time Machine backups are and it does not allow me to navigate to a location to find it. It seems as if the utility is looking for the backups to be directly connected to the machine and not over my network.
Has any encountered this same issue and successfully resolved it? If so, how?
I was on Mountain Lion and now I am on Yosemite.

Hello, try connecting an ethernet cable directly from your WD to your Mac. Can you find the back-ups now?

Time Machine will no Longer connect to network drive.. Although the drive is visible and accessible by the system.

Time Machine was working fine, until one day back up was failing due to being unable to delete the old backup. now it will no longer connect to the network drive although the external drive is accessible through the system.. any ideas?

Time Machine is completely unrlable on any networked drive unless that drive is connected to one of the new Airport Extremes. I'm not surprised that you're encountering problems with it if you're using a networked drive. Can you plug the drive into your MacBook Pro and see if it will backup? The backups may - probably are - corrupt.

I have an external hard drive connected to my TC and I don't want Time Machine to backup to the external hard drive, just to the Time Capsule, how do I do that?

Open Time Machine Preferences
Click on Options
Click the + (plus) button
Navigate using the Finder interface to the External Drive and click it to highlight it
Click Exclude at the lower right of the window
The drive should now appear in the "Excluded Items" list and it will not be backed up

How to restore time machine from wireless hard drive?

I backed up my data to a wireless hard drive before I wiped my hard drive. But now I'm having trouble restoring it.
Can't restore it from time machine, as it was not fully complete.
Migration assistant asks for a password to the hard drive, which I don't know. The person in my family who bought the drive entered it, but then migration asssistant greys out continue and nothing seems to happen
I opened the hard drive myself and there's a bunch of blank files named 01 349 049 984 and such. No extension.

The exhaustive list of backup devices supported by Time Machine consists of Time Capsule and locally connected and mounted volumes, period. Time Machine can use NAS devices, but there are many caveats including but not limited to the necessity for AFP to be running on the server. Wireless storage devices introduce yet another element of uncertainty.

Restoring Time Machine from non-fusion drive to a Fusion Drive

I have a mid 2010 iMac (1TB HDD—before they had fusion drives) that I'm thinking of upgrading to the new iMac w/Fusion Drive because it's having hardware issues. I do a lot of development and have installed numerous packages and server configurations, of which I've been terrible at cataloging, so I'm hoping to simply do a full restore of the system from my Time Machine backup.
I've done Time Machine restores before, but I'm not sure if it will work properly. I think I remember reading (back when fusion drives came out) that time machine restores that originated on non-fusion drives can't be restored onto fusion drives. After doing a few searches I can't find reference to that, but I have this nagging memory of reading that at some point. Is this true? If I get a fusion drive will I need to start the system new? If so, will I be able to at least restore my home directory files?

Error restoring Time Machine from 10.8.2, iCloud Document?

created a fresh time machine backup and reinstalled my macbook.
I wanted to restore it manually (only restoring some folders via time machine), but this failes:
"FILENAME" cannot be converted. Please install a newer version of iWork.
The file "FILENAME" seems to be a file in my home directory --> library --> mobile document on the time machine backup.
I already have installed all iWork updates.
Any ideas?

My HDD died recently and I purchased a new one, which has 10.7.3 installed on it. My previous version of OS X was 10.6.8
I had made a TM back up just prior to the HDD failing, so am wondering can I restore my files from a 10.6.8 TM backup to 10.7.3? I only want my documents, music, photos etc.

Upon first boot of the new system/drive wit a fresh install of OS X, use the TM backup from the old system to load accounts, data, and apps using Setup Assistant (whatever parts of it you wish).

I have a 750GB OWC external hard drive on which I back up about 100GB of data from my MacBook using Time Machine, and also store a bunch of media files for work. Currently about 650GB of that is full, and that is mostly because of two Time Machine-related files: The "Backups.backupdb" folder, which is 135.15GB, and "MacBook_001b63336000.sparsebundle," which is 233.71 GB. That means that in the nine months since I bought the drive, about 370GB, or half its available space, has been eaten by Time Machine backups.
I only back up so I have a bootable copy of all my current (not past) MacBook data if my MacBook is ever lost, stolen, or damaged. I am now very concerned that, if left unchecked, Time Machine will eat into the remaining 100GB of empty space. And my old external hard drive died precisely because it ran out of empty space. Some of my critical files were lost forever, and others I got back in pieces after several weeks of anguish and quite a bit of cash.
Apple's support page addresses this concern (incredibly) by instructing me to buy another external hard drive. That solution is expensive for me, and what's the point, when Time Machine will eventually fill that one up too?
So, my questions are:
1. Is there any point at which Time Machine recognizes it's nearly out of hard drive space, and either stops backing up, or deletes old backups, or sends me a warning, or something?
2. If not, is there a way I could designate a maximum size for Time Machine backups to take, such as 150 GB, that it cannot exceed?
3. Partitioning has been suggested, but I don't know how. Any instructions?
4. The OWC hard drive came with its own backup software. Should I just use that and shut up?
It would be mighty ironic if the software I use to save all my data got so fat, it sacrificed all my data....

this is pretty confusing. have you been using it for both wireless and wired backups? the sparse bundle would only be created if you've used it for network backups. directly attached TM drives don't use a sparse bundle so it looks like you've got two separate backup lines. you should get rid of one as using both is very space inefficient.

FYI, TM backups are not bootable themselves. You can use the "full system restore from TM" utility on the leopard install DVd to restore your system from backups. That restored system will, of course be bootable.

I'm not sure of the precise point (TM need some free space on the backup drive to operate) but yes, this will eventually happen. when it does, TM will inform you of this and will give you an option of either stopping TM backups and changing the TM drive or starting to delete old backups. If you choose the latter it will start deleting old backups to create space for new ones. this is done automatically.
2. If not, is there a way I could designate a maximum size for Time Machine backups to take, such as 150 GB, that it cannot exceed?
not unless you partition the drive.

it's an option but not right now. you have too little free space left for a successful partitioning process. If you try, the process is sure to fail due to disk fragmentation.
You need to get rid of A LOT of data if you want to try partitioning. also, fort the future, it's a very good idea to keep one partition entirely for TM and another for data. You'll avoid some of the problems you are having now.

don't. besides TM there are much better options out there. CCCloner and Superduper! are better than anything that OWC software has to offer.

How can I keep Time Machine from Automatically backing up any external drive connected

Problem: Whenever I have an external drive attached and TimeMachine starts, it tries to back-up the drive. Usually, this causes Time Machine to gut my TimeMachine back-ups to try and make room before saying, not enough space to complete the back-up. NOT Helpful! I maintain offline/offsite clones of my drives but I also receive drives with large amounts of data which I will want backed up AFTER I have copied it to my drives. Yes, I can go into TimeMachine and exclude the drive(s). If I forget to do that, then BYE BYE back-ups.
Ideally, I would like a prompt asking if I want to include the drive in theTimeMachine back-up after I connect it. Anyone know how to set this?
or
I would be fine with simply having TimeMachine treat all drives unknown to the backup as drives to be ignored.
Thoughts?

Right, the behavior hasn't changed between SL and Lion.

Time Machine hasn't significantly changed between SL and Lion. Well, other than the local HD backup sets when a portable device is away from the actual backup destination, which really seem to freak people out for some reason.

Time Machine creates two sparsebundle backups on network drive, then questions their validity

Time Machine first creates a sparse-bundle backup on the network-drive, called xxxxxx MacBk.sparsebundle, which appears to be at or near the full qunatity of data being backed up (about 65Gb).
Then a message appears saying something like the Identity of the backup disk cannot be confirmed, has it been changed (don't have the exact wording before me), and asks me to confirm whether I want to continue using that disk.
When I look a this disk, I see the first sparsebundle that was created, xxxxxx MacBk.sparsebundle, at about 65Gb, and then a second one, called
xxxxxx MacBk.sparsebundle1, which has just started to be created, and is perhaps a few hundred Mb.
The TM message asks me to confirm whether I want to continue using the disk, which it regards as suspect ( I am not asked to confirm the sparsebundle itself, there is no option for that).
If I click yes, the TM then reports that there isn't enough room on the disk to create a backup, so presumably it is still ignoring the first sparsebundle and trying to create yet another.
I have tried deleting the smaller sparsebundle, and trying backing up again the same, with the same effect (not enough space reported)
I have also tried deleting all sparsebundles and starting again with the backup, and then the problems of two sparsebundles reappears, so back to square one.
I am backing up a 13" white macbook, using OS 10.6.8. and a hard-drive connected to an imac, which is connected to a brand new Airport Express base-station router . The macbook is connected to the router via Mains Internet , not wi-fi.
This system has worked very well for me for several years, first with a Time Capule, then an old Netgear router after the TC broke, and never had problems. A couple of weeks ago I switched to the new Airport Express base-station, due to unrelated problems with the old router, and now have this problem.

Most likely, the old sparse bundle is corrupted, and Time Machine can't use it. Try repairing it, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If it can be repaired successfully, Time Machine may continue using it.
If it can't be repaired, or TM won't continue using it, there's not much you can do. Keep the old sparse bundle for a while (you may be able to browse and restore from it, per #E2 in the Troubleshooting Tip. Once you're sure you don't need the old set (or Time Machine runs out of room and has to start deleting backups from the new set), delete the old sparse bundle via the Finder.

How do use Time Machine to back up to my network drive?

I have been dealing with this issue for days. When I had bought my MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago I figured Id try and back it up to my 1.5tb Western Digital HD that's plugged into the USB port on my router. I Have connected to it through finder and can access it fine however my main point in getting to it is to back up my MacBook with Time Machine over the air to the external HD. I have researched and tried many tricks such as running codes in finder to create a "sparsebundle" using the code " hdiutil create -size 100g -fs HFS+J -volname "Time Machine" COMPUTERNAME_XXXXXXXXXXXX.sparsebundle " in Terminal. I was able to succeed in creating one but my problem comes when I want to transfer it to the network drive. I use the code " rsync -aE COMPUTERNAME_XXXXXXXXXXXX.sparsebundle /Volumes/NETWORKDRIVE/ ". However I get error codes such as "file could not be transferred (23)" and "no file or directory (2)". Also before I did all of these steps I made sure to make network drives discoverable in Time Machine by running the code " defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 " in Terminal. However without using the trick that I keep getting errors with Time Machine gets error message 45 when attempting to back up to the Network Drive straight after making the Drive discoverable. I know Apple niched Time Machine back ups on network drives after or toward the end of Leopard and thats why it is so hard to do it now but I was hoping someone can aid me in my never ending problem?

What format is the drive on the router? It has to be HFS+ (Extended, journaled).
Sorry Barney, that's not correct in this context. The user must create an HFS+ sparse bundle and then upload it to the network drive. The network drive will be formatted as its formatted.
I also believe it has to be an Apple Airport Extreme router.
Again, that is not the case. I am successfully using Time Machine to an Iomega network drive for the last 12 months. No issues at all.
However, you are making your backup completely unreliable.
There may be an element of truth to this, however, I have used the "Star Wars" interface to recover individual files directly. If I should need to perform a larger recovery and for some reason I can't get the usual access through Apple software, I have established that I can directly access the sparse bundle on the drive and mount it on the computer. Once there, I can just copy files directly from it. The sparse bundle folder structure makes it easy to get the latest version of every file with a couple of mouse drags. This means that I will always be able to get access to my backups.
Apple nixed it because they couldn't get it to work reliably. I imagine they only support that sort of thing on their own Time Capsule because they can control the wireless transmission and error checking (and they sold TCs specifically for that purpose).
I don't know why Apple nixed it - I've had zero problems with this configuration and it is by far the most sensible way to use Time Machine. It seems completely pointless to have a portable MacBook and then have to physically connect a drive to it permanently for backup purposes.
I've only had personal experience with the Iomega drive - maybe it only works with a limited number of manufacturers?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
