Restore to earlier date

I seem to have mistakenly deleted something on my PowerBook a couple of days ago when I was deleting some images and dropped them onto the desk top instead of the bin by mistake. The upshot is that I can't activate Entorage, Word or any of the MS suite and my pics on iPhoto won't open properly amongst other things, although most of the iLife suite works fine! Is it possible to restore the system (like Windows) to an earlier time - i.e. before the problem occurred or is this the only useful function that PCs have over Macs?

Leopard has Time Machine that does exactly what you ask. However, it does require that you activate it.

If the problem only affects the MS apps, insert your MS installer disk and install again. Sounds like you may have deleted some background component of Office that it needs to run.

  • Restore to earlier date.. lost contacts on 5s after facebook update

anyone know how to restore to an earlier date? I plugged in to restore but Itunes did an auto backup so now I have a back up of my phone with lost contacts.
Used to you could right click and pick a date but that option isnt there now.. plz help

Before you do any else, let's look to see where your contacts (mostly) reside on the Z10.
    Open your Contact app.
Swipe down from the top bezel to Settings.
scroll down to turn OFF each of the Social accounts (BBM, BBM video, LinkedIn, Faceboo, and Twitter) accounts, so that you leave ONLY the email, SIM , etc. contacts ON.
    Tap Back at lower left.
Now, on the contacts main screen, from the middle of the screen, pull down on the screen to reveal your TOTAL number of contacts. Keep note of that number.
Return to the settings and NOW, turn off the remaining email and SIM card contacts to NOT show.
Go back and again check the total of number of contacts.
Now, this final number is the total contacts residing "Local" on the device, not syncing with anything.
Those local contacts can be deleted in mass, and you can sync with your iCloud contacts if you like.

Let me know if you want to delete those local contacts, and I'll tell you how. See if your sync with iCloud can be setup first.

  • How do i restore to earlier date without using time machine

I logged in to my Mac a couple of days ago and it said it was restore to some weird date. It does not appear anything changed, but now when I am trying to download a Sims game (don't judge me lol) it won't download saying there is no Internet connection even though there is. Is there anyone to restore the system to a date that I know it was working properly without using time machine? I never bought an external drive so my time machine is not set up. Thanks.

If you don't keep a backup, you can't restore your machine to any state except the state in which you received it, brand new, with none of your own stuff on it. That makes a pretty convincing argument for backing up, doesn't it?

  • Complete time machine restore from earlier date to latest date

    Hey everyone,
my 9-month old harddrive died on me 2 weeks ago. I'm living in Argentina at the moment, roughly half a world away from my installation disk. My backup drive has been sent over from Germany now and I managed to get a new (overpriced) harddrive over here.
After I couldn't get a hold of the MAC OS X CD quick enough, I got an Apple Approved Technician to install Snow Leopard / do a complete restore of my backup through Time Machine.
I've just come home and sadly realized though, that they did the complete restore of the earliest backup from March 2012 and not the latest from September 2012.
When I open time machine, it shows the latest back-up date as September 28th on the right hand side but all dates later than March 1st are greyed out and i can't click on them. Though all those files from the latest back-up are still visible in Finder on the external backup harddrive .
I've searched for ages now, trying to find someone that has the same problem, but can't find anyone.
Please can somebody tell me what I need to do to be able to do a complete back-up restore to the latest date aka September 28th?
(I still don't have an actual MAC OS X Disk as they did everything in their office)
Anyone that's ever lived in Argentina can probably imagine my frustration and that I'm close to a heartattack - so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers, Falko

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
AFAIK, you can only restore a TM backup onto an identical (or nearly so) computer. I don't think the Intel backup will work at all on a PPC. The drive partitions schemes are incompatible - GUID vs APM and none of the drivers or other hardware-related software components will work, not to mention many of the Intel-only apps.
The best you can do in install Leopard on the PPC and see if you can migrate from the TM backup.

  • Contacts deleted, SD card empty. Can I restore to earlier date?

I attempted to "resync" my emails by deleting my email account and then reinstalling it along with a new email account. As a result, nearly all of my Contacts were delected. How do I retrieve them? I have Backup Assistant and went to the Verizon website to Manage My Contacts but there were the same remaining ones as in my phone - - all of the others are gone. My SD card appears empty. Please, please, please, please help. I store all of my information in my contacts.

Assuming you have the galaxy s3 or other android phone, go to your google account(gmail.com) from your computer and sign in. Then in the upper left corner you will see gmail with a little red arrow pointing down. Click on that and choose contacts. See if your contacts are still there. If they are sync them back to your phone.  If they have been deleted you have so many days to restore the contacts that you had.  Search the site to learn how to do that. Hope this helps!

If you have a Time Machine backup or bootable clone from that date, restore it. If not, you can't.

  • Icloud help with restoring to an earlier date

I plugged my Iphone 4S into my computer and it said i could update to the new IOS 7 so i did.
When i completed the download my phone had completely lost all pictures, videos ect along with all text message history and so on.
All i had was my contacts.
I therefore tried to restore back to an earlier date but that didnt seem to work.
So i decided to restore my phone as i read that may work, then once done that sign into icloud and get it back that way.
Well once i restored my phone all my itunes was wiped and it now says i have 12.8gb of space when before (when all my stuff was there) i only had 7 or 8.
Therefore i am worried now that EVERYTHING has been truly deleted, even from my itunes and icloud.
Is there any way i can get this back?
I am willing to hear any help possible. Thanks

It sounds as if you either didn't backup to iTunes before updating, or you clicked "Restore iPhone" instead of Update.  Either way, you can try to restore again from iCloud (https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521), and if nessecary choose to Show the older backups available from iCloud.  Or learn more about how to keep a backup of your device so this doesn't happen again.

  • Thunderbird runs very slowly after latest round of 11 updates from Microsoft, restoring computer to earlier date fixes problem.

    Thunderbird version 24.4.0
Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1
Microsoft uploaded 11 new updates ( 7 updates for Windows 7 and 4 for Office 2010) on 9 April 2014. After automatically installing updates on my computer Thunderbird runs very slowly, i.e., every time anything is selected, Thunderbird give error "Thunderbird fails to response" which takes about 1 minute to clear. I restored computer to earlier date that did not have these updates and Thunderbird works OK.
Also updates changed default search engine in Firefox 28.0 from Google to Bing ! ! !
    Marti Sarigul-Klijn, Ph.D.

    Appears that you are right.
McAfee was running a scan continuously. I uninstalled it. Then ran all of the Microsoft updates. Finally I reinstalled McAfee and turned off real time scanning of e-mail.
Thunderbird appears to be working OK now.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do i restore Thinkpad to an earlier date

I need to restore a Thinkpad (type-2378) T41, to an earlier date or factory setting
    How do i do it?

Press F8 while booting to enter Safe mode, then proceed to "restore to an earlier date" when given that choice.
If your recovery partition is still intact, you can press F11 on the boot to restore the system to factory settings.
    Good luck.

  • How do I retrieve call history from my iPhone 4S? It only seems to log for about a month and I need an earlier date?

How do I retrieve call history from my iPhone 4S? It only seems to log for about a month and I need an earlier date?

If you have backup of your files, you can get your call history back as long as you sync iPhone with iTunes frequently.
OK, the first thing you are required to do is close the function of "prevent iPhone from syncing automatically." in iTunes, avoiding to sync iPhone again.
Now, connect your iPhone to pc and open iTunes.
    iTunes> preferences> devices
All the backup data in iTunes will be displayed.
Then, click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up
your iPhone will restart and you can find them back.
This method only can find back the latest history, to get back the old, you should turn to a third party program for help.

  • Updated as new installation 613 to 616 iphone 3GS, the 613 backup is nolonger listed, and all data gone. Anyway to restore 613 with data and update keeping data?

I chose new installation instead of update from 613 to 616. The new installation is missing all the data, and app data, notes, etc. The previous backup is nolonger listed, only new one for 616, anyway to restore 613 with data?

A backup was listed for earlier today, I did a backup before new installation. Once new installation, it did an auto backup of new installation, and only this one is listed.
This matches documentation, it says cannot restore to earlier version from itunes. Do I have to do a restore factory settings to see previous version backup, and restore this earlier version?

  • Way to reboot to an earlier date?

I was wondering if there was a way to reboot your mac to an earlier date. For instance, If I deleted something very important and I needed it back, there's a way (on a PC) to go back in your computers history and start from there, where I had said file. Any help? I don't have a Time Capsule or anything btw

As Neil says, that's what Time Machine is for, but note that you'd have to have been backing up somewhere, otherwise you've got nothing for Time Machine to restore. If you don't currently have backups, you need to make some ASAP. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for assistance.
