Restore to factory or early backup?

Hi everyone! I'm trying to restore my computer to an earlier state and was wanting to get some advice. I deleted the factory restore files form my hard drive not long after getting my W520 in Dec 2011. I made a backup of the system right away upon first bootup to my external hard drive. I then moved those backup files (WindowsImageBackup, MediaID and GEOMACHINE) to a subfolder. Each time I made a backup I did this with the exception of my very last backup last night which is on the root of the drive. I've had issues with Windows not recognizing where the files are after trying to restore my system to the very first backup. I was thinking of trying Acronis or something else to see if that will work but I'm not sure what I'm doing to be frank. Should I just order a new factory restore disk from Lenovo or can I use the first backup I made, even though I moved the files? Also, if I restore to the first backup or to the factory original state will I be able to restore back to my very last backup from last night if I decide to? Thanks for your help! This backup thing doesn't seem like it should be that difficult but I guess there's more considerations that I anticipated.

If you do not want to reset the router you can just power cycle the connection and then check the connectivity status. If still the issue persists and if you do not want to loose the router settings then you can take the back of the current settings. The Backup and Restore feature of the Linksys router enables the user to backup the current settings of the router and restore them after resetting the device.  It is recommended to back up the router's configurations before resetting the router to factory defaults or upgrading the router's firmware.  This way, there will be no need to reconfigure the router after performing reset or upgrade.

  • Restoring Entire System to Earlier Backup with Leopard CPU Drop-in DVD

After some programs failed in a pernicious manner, I decided to return the entire system to a Time Machine backup made earlier today. Time Machine Help "Recovering your Entire system" seems to be the only relevant help. It says to choose Utilities > Restore System from my Mac OS X Install disc. But I was shipped two Tiger Mac OS X Install Discs and a Leopard CPU Drop-in DVD (updates to Leopard). The Leopard Drop-in does not have Utilities > Restore System and I am reluctant to use either Tiger disc to restore my Leopard system.
What should I be doing? I hope the answer provides a restore process that is relatively quick because the changes are relatively small.

    Butterflie14,
The term "delta" doesn't really apply to Time Machine backups. Each backup is a complete "snapshot" of the entire installation. In order to do this without copying over huge amounts of data, Time Machine uses "multi-linked" files in the various backups, all pointing to the same data. That is, with the exception of any new/changed files; these represent the only real data that is transferred during each backup. Only in this sense does "delta" apply.
Restoring from a backup, at least in the context of "going back to a previous state," is an all-or-nothing proposition. That doesn't mean it has to take a long time. First, the process of erasing a drive takes mere seconds. Second, a Time Machine "Restore" doesn't include a new installation of OS X from the installer disk (which would take a long time), but rather a restoration of the entire system from the backup. As such, it is dependent entirely on the speed of the drive and connecting bus (FW 400, 800, USB, etc.). In the case of my FW 800 drive, a complete "Restore" of a 50 GB system took about 30 minutes.
I agree, to take this step seems like a waste just to recover from some "pernicious" action of a particular application. If you were a bit more specific about what application we're talking about, and just what it did, perhaps I could offer better advice. You can restore anything that has been backed up by Time Machine, but may have been deleted from your internal disk in the meantime, but you cannot really "un-modify" OS X, if that is what has happened. To do so, you must perform a complete "Restore."

  • Restoring backed-up files with Backup

I'm restoring a large amount of data that I backed up on an external drive using Backup. I didn't realize that every three or four incremental backups I was supposed to force another "full backup," and now I am faced with restoring 178 incremental files. It's taking forever; by my calculations, based on the time elapsed so far, it's going to take at least 60 hours.
Does anybody know a shortcut for this?
I'm assuming that I have to restore every incremental file chronologically or risk losing data. Truth be told, if I I didn't restore some files from earlier backups, that would probably be OK.
Any shortcuts, workarounds, tips, appreciated. This is a very painful lesson in the wisdom of doing more "full backups" than incrementals. (It also might be a good inducement to upgrade to Time Machine.)
    Thanks.

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

  • Restoring to Factory Settings and Restore Backup on an iPod Touch 4G

I have seen many posts regarding restoring iPods to factory settings and then loading a backup.  I have seen many posts about the "Other" storage space, too.  But I haven't found any that address my specific issue.  I'm mostly looking for some assurance that I won't lose all of my son's and daughter's hard work and the money we've spent on a couple games.
I have reviewed the Usage on my son's iPod via Settings < General < Usage.  I added up the storage space of all the apps.  It is 2.1 GB.  This is what the "Apps" category shows is being used.  The "Other" category shows it's using 2.3 GB.  It is only an 8 GB iPod, so this "Other" is eating up a ton of space.  He has no videos, only pictures he's taken (which isn't very many), apps (I keep those at a minimum), and music (which I also keep tight control over).  How do I find out what this "Other" is, and how do I get rid of it?  He doesn't have e-mail, and doesn't use the calendar, contacts, or notes.  I've read posts which say I probably have corrupt files and have to perform a factory restore, which wipes everything out, then restore again from the latest backup, with no guarantee that the "Other" will go away.  I've also read horror stories about the factory restore causing problems with the basic function of an iPod.  I called Apple Support, and the young man I spoke to asked around (because he didn't know) and said that the data while using an app (games like My Horse and Angry Birds) is stored in the "Apps" category.  How can I be sure of this?  He has a game we've put a lot of time, energy, and some money into.  I do not want this to be lost.  I'm assuming that backing up from the lastest backup of the iPod will prevent this, but how can I be sure that the game information isn't part of the "Other"?  If it is part of the "Other", and it doesn't get reloaded to the iPod from the backup restore, then it's lost.  If this happens, I will be very upset.  I'm frustrated and confused by all the conflicting information I've read.  Does anyone know where the game data is stored?  Does anyone know if the "Other" will be restored from the backup, and thus make the entire restore process pointless?
    Please help!!

As you likely read already, the "other" category consists of those items not included in the enumerated categories. That is why it is called other. What is in it depends a lot upon what different app place it it.
2.1 GB seems large enough to it also contain corrupted files.
Usually restoring from backup reduces the other. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is necessary since the larger other may be included in the backup.

  • My daughter accidentally restored her ipod4 to factory settings so I restored from the last iCloud backup. Her photos were all on camera roll so I believe should have been backed up, but none of them have been restored. Why?

My daughter accidentally reset her ipod4 to factory settings so I restored from the last iCloud backup. All her photos were on camera roll so I believe they should have automatically been backed up, but none have been restored. Why?

When she plugged in the ipod last night it backed up again so that now shows as the latest backup. No previous backups are listed so I do not seem to have the option to rerun the old one. She had many pictures on the camera roll taken from well before July. I can only presume that the backup in July must have been incomplete - but then I didn't think it was supposed to list as an option to restore from. Luckily many of the photos had been backed up on the pc but I am very frustrated as to why the icloud backup didn't protect them. Thank you for your advice though, I appreciate it.

  • My phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

I attempted to update to iOS 8 and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

    Hi, kformagg
I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
    It worked very well.

Once again, KP is correct, but I just want to add that if you don't see the backup in the drop down menu on the summary page of iTunes when you choose the restore from backup option, then the backup is unfortunately gone. If you backup your computer, the iPad backup should probably be in that computer backup. I use Time Machine with my MacBook Pro and can access backups from months ago.
On a side note, I also archive backups from time to time. If you right click on a backup name in iTunes>Edit>Preferences>Devices (Windows) or iTunes>Preferences>Devices (Mac) you can save that backup or archive it. It will be date and time stamped. I have no idea why I do this to the degree that I do it, but I probably have 12-14 iPad backups archived in iTunes.

  • Can I restore contacts from an earlier iCloud backup?

    Hi
I hope someone can help me...!
My son had contacts syncing via iCloud on his iPod so ended up with all the contacts from my iPhone.  At his request I removed all my work/social contacts, just leaving on his iPod the few for family members that he needed.
I've just realised that of course my iPhone has now synced with the updated contacts on his iPod and all 250+ work/social contacts have gone.
I have tried restoring and merging from iCloud but the latest backup only contains the family contacts.
Is it possible to access an earlier version of the iCloud backup, or does it only store the very latest version?
Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to give me.

How about if I go into iTunes - Info - Advanced - Replace information on this iPhone (and select Contacts)?
    It says:
During the next sync only, iTunes will replace the selected information on this iPhone with information from this computer.
Where does that contacts info come from? Is it downloaded from iCloud or does iTunes on my MacBook Air store an earlier backup of this data?
    Grasping at straws here!
    Thanks for any help...

If you didn't back it up, your data is gone. There is no "solution" after the fact.

  • I restored my IPad Mini with an earlier backup in error

I restored my IPad Mini with an earlier backup in error, while trying to get my music to sync.  Now ICloud has an old email address and asks for a password I have forgotten.  My Itunes and Apstore has the correct Apple ID, how do I change the email address on the ICloud?

Restoring old versions of your Backup
Restoring backups of your iPhone takes just a few clicks, but iTunes often only shows your most recent backup as an option to restore from. If you ever want to restore your Older backups then you’ll need the assistance of Time Machine and Time Capsule.
If you’re not already backing up your system, you may want to utilize this incredible thin mini external hard drive. It has enough space to backup significant amounts of data and will work great in backing up your iPhone.
iTunes stores your backup files in a folder at this location: /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/MobileSynce/Backup. In this folder will be an additional folder or two. These folders contain all the data on your iPhone settings.
If you want to restore your iPhone to a backup you created 3 months ago, navigate to the location listed above, select the folder and open Time Machine. Navigate back 3 months and then click restore.
After Time Machine has finished restoring your Backup Folder, follow the steps listed above to Restore your iPhone Backup.
While Time Machine is a great feature in OS X Leopard and above, I’ve personally had two external hard drives fail while being used for backups. Luckily, I had previously backed up online my data to keep things safe. Online Backup works great for restoring data, like your iPhone Backups and allows you to have extra piece of mind while keeping your data safe. Best of all, with companies like Mozy, online backup is cheap. I’ve used it to restore data and its quick, easy, and the software on the PC and Mac runs in the background without getting in the way. Check it out, back up your data, and be ready for the next time you need to restore your iPhone backups, even if Time Machine isn’t.

It doesn't matter if your TM backup is on a time Capsule or some other HDD, that's just a cheap ad plug!

  • Can be done restore from an earlier backup if the backup was deleted?

can be done restore from an earlier backup if the backup was deleted? restoring from backup is lost application

No, you cannot restore from a deleted backup, because the backup is deleted. It therefore no longer exists.
Just re-download the lost app from the AppStore.

  • How do I restore my contacts from an earlier backup?

Lost some but not all contacts when I got a new phone. How can I restore my contacts from a backup I did earlier this week?

When restoring an iPhone from the backup, the current backup being used is selected by default. If a previous backup is avaialble, you can select it from the pop-up where the current backup selected by default is located.
Contacts should be available in a supported address book app on your computer for a number of reasons with this being one of them. If so, the contacts would be transferred from the address book app on your computer without having to restore the iPhone with iTunes and in then event there is a problem with the backup in regards to this data. If the iPhone were lost or stolen or damaged and not usuable, your contacts would be available as well or syncing with another phone in the event the iPhone was not replaced with another, etc.
