I installed new hard drive on 2008 imac that had mavericks. When boot command R to restore from time capsule the process finds the time machine disk but then gets stuck during the "opening time machine backup" step. Does this mean my time machine backup is corrupted? Ive tried 3 times with same result. Any ideas on what else i can try? Could i use migration assistant to recover pieces?

Ok first you give the information that you have a 2008 iMac with Iphone operating system of IOS-7.. What is on the iMac. If you don't have OSX 10.6.8 You cant Install Mavericks. So tell us what you have and then we can help.

The computer began to freeze/stop working, so I took it to an Apple care centre and they informed that my hard drive has crashed and has to be replaced.
Luckily, I backed up my old hard drive a few days before with an external hard drive using Time Machine. My question is: can I restore this new hard drive with my old time machine backup that is on my external hard drive? If so, how do I do this?

Restore to New Hard Drive from Time Capsule

I replaced the hard drive on my Macbook Pro and now want to restore my Time Machine Backup to the new drive. The backup is on a Time Capsule connected via airport. If I choose to boot from an OSX install disk (without installing), and then go into utilities/restore system from backup it does not find the time capsule. So do I need to first install OSX before I can try to restore from the backup?

You shouldn't have to install OSX.
Connect to the Time Capsule via Ethernet if at all possible; it will be 2-3 times faster than even a good WIFI connection. Your backups may be found that way.
And be sure to use a Snow Leopard Install disc, not a Leopard one.
If the backups still aren't recognized, you'll have to install OSX. Then set up a temporary Admin account (different from any on your backups), and repair your backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then use +Migration Assistant+ to transfer your apps, users, and data, per [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html]. When your system reboots, you'll need to download and install the "combo" update to get back to the version of OSX you were running on. If that's 10.6.4, Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 If it's 10.6.5: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

Going tomorrow to pickup my iMac at the Apple store after a 1TB hard disk replacement. Time capsule backed up about 1 hr before the disk failure. What are the steps for doing this restoration properly? I'm very nervous about this process & I don't wanna start this process the wrong way. I have read horror stories in different threads about going at this the wrong way. Thanks in advance for any help

How do I restore a new Hard drive from Super Duper clone ?

The Hard Drive in my 2010 iMac died and was replaced with a new one. Thankfully I have a clone made with Super Duper of the old drive. Do I just clone back on to the new internal drive ? The new drive, installed by Apple has OS10.6.8 installed on it now (by Apple ), which is the OS on the clone. Do I need to completely wipe the drive before restoring with my clone ? All that's on the new drive is the OS. Don't want to make any mistakes here.....

1. Boot from your install DVD or Bootable Clone and open Disk Utility.
2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.
6. Once thats done then you can do a clean Install, restore from TM or the Bootable Clone.

This did't help...but I have already restored it...I perservered on my own and found that the procedure was straightforward on the "Finder>Help" pages. I just searched for "Restore my entire system and that's what came up.
Make sure you are connected to your external drive. Then, turn the computer off and then after you turn it back on at the gray window, hold down the Command and R keys, until the options come up and then select "Restore from a Time Machine Backup", then click Continue. That's all I needed to do....everything was restored to the last time I backed up on my G Drive with Time Machine
Now I just have to go back and get all the software updates since my last backup...

Your "Firefox personal data", like bookmarks, are stored in your Profile folder in Firefox. See this support article about how to recover that data from that old hard drive and transfer it your your new Profile.

What kind of corruption? And when do you see it? All your images, or only some? Are the images distorted, discolored, or not displayed at all?
Are you shooting in raw? Is your library referenced or managed? Is your library on your system volume or on an external harddrive?
And it would help to know your MacOS version and Aperture version too.

Restoring new hard drive from time capsule

I am attempting to restore my new macbook pro hard drive from my time capsule. I follow the prompts at start up and select "from time machine or other disk" when I get to the "transfer infromation to this mac" screen. the next screen says "select source" it shows the picture of a time capsule, which is not selectable. When I click "conitnue" i get the spining circle and "looking for other computers..." it never goes any further. I was able to connect to the time capsule from another computer, so, I assume it working---don't know what else to do

Try this:
Drive Preparation and Installation for Lion/Mountain Lion
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. You can now select the option to restore from a Time Machine backup, then click on the Continue button.

Help Restoring New Hard Drive from Time Machine

To replace a failing Macintosh HD, I created an OS X Mountain Lion boot disk on a flash drive, put my new hard drive in a USB external dock, booted to the flash drive, partitioned and formatted the new drive (selecting GUID partition), and have tried and failed three times to restore from Time Machine, which is on a Firewire-connected drive. The error I get is that it's unable to create a restore disk.
I could reformat the new drive and try again, but is there something else I'm missing? For example, should I have left the new drive in the external dock, or should I move it to bay 1 and then try to restore, considering that latency is a possible issue or that Time Machine won't restore to a USB drive?

Why don't you install ML on it and then see?
Better yet use any of the 4 internal drive bays instead of USB - slow and terrrible place!
It does not matter where or what drive bay.
Unable to unmount drive.
CLONE your system - a couple times, pure Apple Mac OS once you have one and later for working copy and one before you install or apply updates or programs or otehr changes.
CCC carbon copy cloner - will create recovery partition when you clone a system.
I assume your flash drive works, not everyone is successful first shot.
I prefer a clean install to start with. Esp as you say your system was failing I don't like relying on the Time Machine for everything.

Using Time Machine to restore to new hard drive missing recent backups

On Mac Book Pro 2009 with OS X 10.5.8.
I have been backing up to Time Machine on an external drive since 2009. A few month ago I upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Trying to install a new hard drive and restoring from Time Machine. Just before installing the hard drive I again backed up to Time Machine.

The problem is, the most recent "complete" restore point in the list is August 2011 (OS X 10.5.8). How can that be? Over the years I have checked Time Machine and I have back ups way past 2011.
What should I do?

The question makes sense until you realize that Time Machine backups contain everything you need (unless you do something silly, like exclude your system files).
Once the new drive is installed and formatted, you can restore your entire system from the TM backups faster than you can copy the clone to the new internal HD. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. Note that you use the Snow Leopard Install disc only for the Installer on it; you don't install OSX from it.

Time Machine restore on new Hard Drive and now my login password not working

I just had a new hard drive installed and they put in a clean version of 10.6.
I got home and used my TIme Machine to restore from my other computer. It finished, but now I am locked out, bacause its not accepting my password. I know its my password, the hint is the same as I have always had. It just won't work,
Since the repair place installed the software, I don't have any other disks to boot from. Does anyone know a way to fix this or reset the computer again? I don't care if the files are lost, I can copy them over later. I just need to get past the login screen. Thanks!!

Do you have any OS disks you can boot from? If so, boot from the disk, look in Utilities, and see if there is a reset password option.

Restore new hard drive from an older one

so i only have 120gb on my current hard drive. im planning on getting a 500gb hard drive to put into my mac, and buy a case for the 120gb hd so i can use it as an external hard drive. the problem is, i dont have an existing external hard drive, so the 120gb one is all i have. i want to keep all my music and photos and all that stuff, so im wondering if i can just replace the internal hard drive with the 500gb one, then connect the 120gb one via usb and restore away.
also: when i install the new hard drive, will i need to use the leopard installation dvd to install, and then transfer my files from my external hd?or will i just be able to transfer everything from the external hard drive right away? and since the external hd should be bootable, when i choose to transfer files from the external(using migration assistant or whatever) should i click use *transfer from existing mac* or *transfer from an external volume* or smth?

Yes. Put it into an enclosure such as the case you mentioned and connect it to the computer.

Use the installation DVD, or place the 500GB drive in an enclosure, use a tool such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your current system to it, put the drive into the computer, and start using it immediately. No migration is needed in the second case.

Time Machine restore to new hard drive fails

This is on a Mac Mini (Early 2009), 8GB RAM, that was running the latest version of Mavericks. This all started when the 120GB hard drive began failing. The computer was running slow so I tried to repair permissions to no avail and also to repair the disk, but Disk Utility said there was a serious error and it was not able to repair it. As it was at nearly full capacity anyway I replaced it with a new 1TB drive.
I am using an install DVD from Leopard (my Snow Leopard disc is damaged) to initiate the restore. I've erased the new hard drive and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).   I'm able to select my from backups on my external drive and it will go through the entire process of copying everything back (1.5 - 2 hours long) only to give me a message at the end saying there was an error and it could not restore the files. Restart and try again. (which I have, twice). My TM backups include 6 user profiles and go back several years (and OS versions).
I suspect there is a compatibility issue between the Leopard install DVD and the TM backup which is Mavericks.   I've searched through the pondini.org site for assistance but nothing addresses this issue.   I also have an iMac (late 2009) running Mavericks. Not sure if I can do something through Target mode?
I've tried restoring the latest Mavericks backup as well as the last one I had on Mountain Lion but no luck.

Well my day just went from bad to worse. Somehow I managed to erase the drive with the only copy of my backups.
I guess the good news is I get 10 points for solving the problem.
