Restore via time machine - user folder blank

I recently wiped my disk trying to install snow leopard. I decided to go back to my time machine backup but when I do my most used user has a blank folder. Here are some facts:
1) the backups show something like:
2009-09-26-091858
mark ( red minus icon in bottom of folder )
Macintosh HD
2) expanding "Macintosh HD->Users->mark_1490812198" are always blank except for the year ago first time backup
3) browsing via finder shows the last backup full file set for user mark is from a year ago
4) I changed the hard drive name at some point from "Macintosh HD" to "Home Mac HD"
5) the other user has the sparsebundle and looks just fine
I see 2 sets of backups, one for the "Macintosh HD" and one for "Home Mac HD". Neither latest backups from those sets restore the user mark correctly, the folder is just empty. In fact the folder name comes back as something like mark.1490812198. Then when I try and log in via this user I get an error about logging in. If I mv the folder to just "mark" then I can log in but there are no files.
a) why doesn't my latest backup have the full file set? Is this because I've never logged out as this user and allowed time machine to back it up?
b) what do the red minus icons on folders mean?
c) why is there a mark folder at the top level of the backup next to "macintosh hd"

It sounds like something was corrupted, somewhere. Were you able to recover all the data?
I was able to recover everything after jumping through hoops.
I'm not sure just what you mean by that. Your backups should be arranged this way (simulating a Finder window in List mode):
Backups.backupdb
...Computer name
......Date & Time
..........Volume name (ie, "Macintosh HD"), containing the same folder structure as the original
......Date & Time
..........Volume name (ie, "Macintosh HD"), containing the same folder structure as the original
It looks like this:
Backups.backupdb
...computer name
......date & time
.........volume name
.........mark
the mark home folder is at the same level as the volume name
The only difference being for a FileVault account, where there will be a sparse bundle instead of the normal folders inside the home folder.
In Time Machine, it should look something like this:
|
Yes the other user has the bundle like that, the user mark just has "Macintosh HD/Users/mark.1490812198" in the time machine backup folder and it's blank.

  • Did a leopard clean install and restored via time machine

    Hi
Just done a leopard clean install and restored data via time machine, now when i run time machine i cant go back in time to restore other bits and bobs, any ideas
    thanks

This is not meant to be a snide comment, but I use Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper not TM. Used TM for a while but got tired of it, changed to CCC and then when Super Duper was updated for Leopard moved back to SD. I like it because (both SD and CCC) can be scheduled for whenever you want to run it and it only backs up files that have changed since last update. It also produces a bootable disk.

  • Can't fully restore my Time Machine/Time Capsule Backup to my newly-wiped SSD/HDD

On receiving my leased, Bootcamp-enabled MacBook Pro, I saw that there were no installation discs for Windows or OSX, and that there were 2 partitions (or so I thought) for Mac and Windows: 375GB each. As I produce music using software in both OSs, I wanted to create a 185GB FAT-32 partition to store my sound samples, projects etc. I attempted to create this partition by resizing (halving) my Bootcamp partition in OSX Disc Utility. The first time I attempted it, resizing was possible, but after the new partition was created, I had problems booting and so had to edit my GPT in order to boot again. Once ‘fixed,’ (by deleting the new partition) I couldn’t resize the Bootcamp partition to fill the 185GB gap, and that 185GB was ‘lost.’ The Bootcamp partition was 375GB but its used space + free space added up to 190GB
So the other day, I tried to follow what I thought was a more logical approach, which I was *sure* would work. My plan was to:
Use Windows Backup (and/or Clonezilla, or Disk Utility) to store an image of my Windows partition.
Uninstall/wipe the Windows partition using BootCamp Assistant, creating 1 big OSX partition
Use BootCamp Assistant to re-partition the HDD for Windows, OSX and ‘shared,’ and then re-install Windows, leaving 175GB for shared music production files
Restore the image/backups (approx 70GB) and carry on as before.
During the process, I deemed that this wasn't possible on my system for a variety of reasons: My laptop already had 4 partitions (Windows Recovery, Bootcamp/Windows, Mac Recovery HD, and Mac) and my understanding is that the MBR of my SSD only supports 4 partitions in its Bootcamp + OSX-compatible state. I have never got this '5 partition' strategy working.
I was unable to restore my Windows partition after re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. As a solution, I then decided to wipe the OSX partition (at that point the only 'visible' partition on the disk) and in-place re-install Mac OS X, with a view to installing Windows after OSX.
Once I wiped my hard drive, however, restoring my files and settings, didn't work as expected. Time Machine backups etc were inaccessible after a normal re-install. Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go. The option to try a full-system restore via Time Machine is greyed-out. Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
I can view files/backups in Time Machine but I can't completely restore my computer to the state it was on 18th May...and 11 days without a fully-functioning laptop is really annoying. I wasn't able to ‘clean’ *or* ‘in-place’ re-install OSX using my existing settings and so I'm frustrated that Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process. Migration Assistant didn’t transfer everything. Can I get things back to the way they were?
    Things that haven’t restored correctly:
None of my icon customisations at the top of the screen were there (DropBox, Evernote, Google Drive, Kuvva, the way battery icon was displayed
    Safari: Top Sites, History, Plugins
Logic Pro: Downloaded sounds, presets (10+GB), recent items, plugin settings/AU manager
Mail: Settings (and I’m assuming, the downloaded/cached mail: 7GB)
    Trash can: Empty
All recent item lists apart from cloud-based services like Evernote, Notes, contacts
    iTunes library
    Dock view and settings
    Settings for most programs
And I'm sure there are more!

Thanks Pondini; I'd hoped you'd reply. I'm still getting used to this tech, no can't even quote here.

If you mean you installed OSX and created a user account, then couldn't find the backups, that's because they're treated as being from a different disk, until you either transfer your data or do a manual "associatedisk".  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #19 for details.
Yet to try the associatedisk...didn't realise this was possible until reading your guides. The explanation makes sense now. On installing OSX it said transfers were possible after installation, so I put off transferring as the first 'restore' had frozen on 10%, thinking I'd do it afterwards.
Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go
That sounds like damaged/corrupted backups. Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

You mean, on the Mac OS X Utilities menu on the Recovery HD?  I've never heard of that.  That should always be selectable, so you can specify where the backups you want are located.  Nothing happens when you click it?  Can you click the other options there?
Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
Also sounds like directory or file problems on the backups.
This is just when I go into Time Machine/Star Wars. I can't just go to the latest backup and click "Restore" (which I assume would just restore my whole computer/HDD, although I have no experience in this). I can only select files and restore them individually.
Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process.
There has never been any such thing.
I bought into the Time Machine 'hype' and thought it was an easy and reliable tool, but was a lot more difficult to do a full restore than I thought.
    Trash can: Empty
Correct.  Time Machine (like most backup apps) don't back up trash.
All the rest should have been backed-up and restored.  Do you see them in the backups?  What, if anything, was excluded from being backed-up?
As a non-native Mac user, I'm not sure where all these things are stored...perhaps in Library? I think that not having the full hard-drive just restore annoyed me...I felt that backing up my whole hard drive every hour should've allowed me to restore everything to as it was without a hitch, and when it didn't work I just tried a few things before posting on here.
If repairing the backups finds and fixes things, you might want to try again.
    Gonna try now
If not, and if you can see the missing items via the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display), you should be able to restore them selectively.

  • How do I create a recovery partition when restoring from Time Machine?

I am planning to replace the HDD in my Macbook Pro with an SSD. I've used Time Machine to backup my HDD (running Mountain Lion) but am trying to find the best way to restore my Time Machine backup to the new SSD once installed.
Given that the new SSD will not have a bootable OS X Recovery partition, I have created a bootable OS X Recovery drive on a USB thumb drive using OS X Recovery Assistant.
In order to ensure that the new SSD has the OS X Recovery parition, should I:
         (1) reinstall Mountain Lion on the SSD then recover my data from Time Machine; or
         (2) can I simply use the Restore from Time Machine option in OS X Recovery to do it all at once.
I can't seem to work out whether option (2) will create the OS X Recovery partition on the new SSD or just recover the system partition.

Turns out the OS X Recovery partition is only created on a fresh install of OS X. Restoring via Time Machine will not do the trick.

  • Samsung 4500 Printer won't print after restoring from Time Machine

My HD drive went down, and was replaced with a new one (1TB).  Restored via Time Machine.  But the printer (Samsung) won't print now.  I get an error that a software update is required.  I tried the System Preferences route; then I went to Samsung and downloaded a driver (once), that didn't work.  I found another note that someone was having a similar problem, and tried this download
    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCX-4500W
Installed OK, but still no printer.
It worked fine until the software changes (I was using Mountain Lion before and after the HD failure).
But now, I have no printer.
Any suggestions besides buying a new printer?

  • Merging Time Machine Library with Blank Aperture Library

I have a 2008 aluminum uni-body MacBook with 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory running Mt Lion, with 367 GB available on the hard drive. For various reasons, I recently completed a clean install of Mt Lion after backing up via Time Machine.
The first thing I re-installed was Aperture, downloaded from the Apple Store.  I didn’t put much else back on the laptop because my first priority was getting the pictures back. I also checked for software updates.
For a week now, I’ve been fighting with Time Machine to get my 133.75 GB library restored. I kept having permissions errors or unable to reinstall errors or, when I tried copying the individual folders (show package contents) I’d get the thumbnails as if they were the actual pictures. Frustrating!
I’ve tried several different methods, techniques, recommendations, attempts to restore, including going into Time Machine and pressing restore. I finally deleted everything that had been placed on my computer related to Aperture, including Aperture and the file in Application Support for Aperture. I re-downloaded Aperture, ran the software updates, opened using the Option command, switched to the Time Machine library, and then restored the permissions.
After a certain amount of nail-biting agony, I had the first correct view of my library in more than a week!
Then, I began to stumble again because I couldn’t figure out or remember how to restore this now agreeable library to my fresh installation of Aperture. So, I created an empty library in Aperture, then merged the corrected Time Machine library using the Import Library function.
19 hours later, Activity Monitor shows that Aperture still has activity, but the monitor bar is stopped at probably 9/10 of the way and has been like that for 13 hours. The library on my hard drive has grown from nothing to 87.75 GB.
Is this normal to have hours and hours for a large library to merge?
Should I give up and Force Quit (even though I’ve read that causes damage to the library), and then try to restore via Time Machine?
If this merge library action actually works, will my backup be ruined? Or, better said, if this merge library doesn’t work, will my backup be ruined? I have another one I could use, but it’s a bit older.
    Regards,
    Alison in Sunny Florida

Got it working--not sure what happened.
Probably your iPhoto library needed upgrading to the latest iPhoto version that is compatible with your recent Aperture version. If your Aperture version is currently Aperture 3.5.1, you need to open any iPhoto library that you want to import at least once in iPhoto 9.5.1.  Otherwise you cannot select it.  See this document:

  • Entire restore of a user's Mail via Time Machine?

Hi people, before I try this, I was wondering if there would be any ill effects to restoring the entire ~/Library/Mail/V2 structure for a user, using Finder and Time Machine. I am wanting to avoid selectively restoring each of the hundred or so mailboxes the user has. Appreciate any help

Well, I've never had an issue of using time machine or it's functionality; it's only been a matter of becoming familiar with some of its "foibles" lol. It's advantage in this case is that no permissions need to be rebuilt, as, when you restore using time machine while logged in as the user concerned, it restores all those permissions. The only extra thing needed by restoring the entire ~/Library structure is that some of the structure there does not belong to the user, but in that case, time machine asks for an admin user/pass which of course was me so no probs there either.
Re CCC, wherever possible I try to use s/w inherent in the system before looking to 3rd party solutions.
Re rsync, yep, I use it all the time too. In my case, all our data is on the NAS and I also backup weekly to a second NAS which is then, for the rest of the week, sitting in a bag by the door (we being in a bushfire-prone area it's then easy to "grab-n-go").  When I was using Windows, the process was performed by RoboCopy with a cmd file script and when switching to the Mac, I ported the process to rsync with AppleScript

  • I had to restore my IMac back via Time Machine because Mavericks keeps crashing

I had to restore my IMac back via Time Machine because Mavericks keeps crashing on install, it gets down to less then one minute, and I get a white screen with the apple in the middle.  Now I have version 10.8.5, but if I try to download again it states that I need version 10.7. Now How do I get 10.7, and dowload Mavericks?? Help

You shouldn't need 10.7. Something is messed up with the App Store.
    3 things you can try.
    1. - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.
    2. Try resetting the App Store.

You can also try creating another admin user and see if you can download it there.

  • I'm having a problem with logging into a FileVault-protected user account after restoring from Time Machine backup.

    Hi all,
My computer had been running really slowly for a while, so I decided to erase the whole hard drive and reinstall the operating system, and then I was going to restore the files I cared about from Time Machine. The main account, which had all my documents and photos, was FileVault-protected. The last thing I did before erasing the hard drive was to run one last Time Machine backup. As far as I remember, I always ran Time Machine backups with the FileVaulted user logged in.
I don't remember whether I was using FileVault 1 or 2. I had been using FileVault 1, but I installed Lion as soon as it came out and I thought I had migrated to FileVault 2 at that point.
Once I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system, I browsed the Time Machine disk and, within the Users folder, there was no folder for the main user account. When I tried to reinstall everything by restoring from Time Machine backup, I'd get the option for all the user accounts, but when I tried to log in with the main one I'd get the dreaded "You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "User" at this time. Log in failed because an error occurred." Finally, when attempting to restore from the Time Machine backup again, I noticed something strange: After the computer got to about 10% done restoring, it declared itself completed successfully and rebooted.
I've tried a number of tips that came up from questions about similar issues on the Apple support forum, but had no luck. Is there any way to get these files back? Did they ever even get backed up?
    Thanks.

    Hroodbwai wrote:
I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):
    |
    |
I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:
    |
    |
    followed by this one:
    |
    |
If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up.

  • How to Restore from Time Machine in Single-user mode?

Hi there, I am trying to fix a Macbook Pro that has had its /private folder trashed and emptied. Obviously it won't boot unless you you boot in to Single User mode and I'm wondering if its possible to do a Time Machine restore from the terminal, I would need the 2nd more recent Time Machine image which is sitting on a Firewire HDD.
I was going to just see if I could find the orignal OSX install disk and just do a fresh install of the OS which I don't mind doing (since everything important is backed up in Dropbox), but I can't seem to find the CD anywhere nearby, so the Time Machine option would be much preferred.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is related enough, but I just wrestled trying to restore from time machine too, trying to reinstall 10.5.8 after putting a new HD in my MBP, 2006 vintage.
That took sooooo long to get back to where I was before swapping disks; what did the trick was ordering a free copy of Snow Leopard install disk (free due to Apple trying to push people from idisk to icloud) which was rushed FedEx (yay) and which allowed me to access Time Machine where my ancient original OSX install disk had not.
And all it took was 2 weeks of cursing!

I use time machine to back my computer which has multiple user login.

  • How to restore particular pictures in iphoto backed up via time machine

cant we open an app like iphoto via time machine for a particular date ??
like i want a pic that i deleted from iphoto , how can i do that without restoring full iphoto library???

As AnaMusic said, iPhoto library can't be opened via Time Machine to restore photos separately, so you will have to restore the whole iPhoto library.
    1. If you don't want to lose changes made after your last backup, copy the iPhoto library, that it's on Pictures folder, to another folder.
    2. Open Finder, select Pictures in the sidebar and open Time Machine.
    3. Navigate through the backups, select the iPhoto library you want to restore and press Restore.
    4. Double-click the iPhoto library to open it on iPhoto.
    5. Drag the photos you want to transfer to your "existing" iPhoto library to the Desktop. You can select more than one pressing Command key.
    6. Delete the "restored" iPhoto library on Pictures folder and copy the "existing" iPhoto library to Pictures folder again.
    7. Open iPhoto and drag the photos on the Desktop to iPhoto, so the photos will be on the iPhoto library.

  • After formatting my HD and eventually restore my system from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?

I have a Time Capsule (4th Gen) and my backups on it, I need to completely erase my hard drive. My question is: after formatting my MacBook HD and eventually restore my system (OS X 10.6.8) from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old* backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?
*(-and to the newer backups- if I had not restored my system from the last backup).
    THANKS

That's a good question. Technically, Time Machine should make a new backup but not erase any old backups. But if there isn't sufficient space on the backup drive, then I'm not sure if Time Machine will simply warn you or just go ahead and remove old backups to make room for the new ones.
In any case, the new backup should have a different backup folder on the backup drive. That's my understanding. You can learn more at pondini.org.

I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!

After the welcome screen it gives me an option to recover via time machine and I select that option. It gets to "Transferring files to suport applications" & "Less then one minutes remaining" and sits there for hours. I started last night at 9:00pm and went to bed it now 6:30am and its at the same point. So, I rebooted and started again. It moved the current downloaded user info to deleted users folder and started again. Its now 9:21am and it has been sitting at the same point again "Transferring files to suport applications" & "Less then one minutes remaining". Has anyone successfully recoverd user info via time machine? If so, what am I doing wrong? I really need my system back!
