Restore with TM using new Leopard disc

I’m looking to restore my crashed white Macbook from Time Machine with a new retail Leopard disc.
I’ve installed a new harddrive and currently have Tiger on it – I had stupidly forgotten that my Macbook came with Tiger and that a tech guy at my former job had installed Leopard when it crashed a couple of years ago.
Unfortunately I never got the disc from him, so I bought a new Leopard disc and I’m wondering what the best way is to go about restoring my system, and if there’s a difference not having the original disc that my backed up system comes from.
1. Should I erase Tiger before i start - if so how?
2. Should I install Leopard and after that restore from Time Machine?
3. Or should I boot from the disc (press ”C” when booting, right?) and do the ”restore from backups” in utilities?
Bit of a noob at this, obviously, so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

yes. that's the way to go in your situation. the retail disk you are using will work just fine for you.

  • Using the Leopard disc provided with a new Mac with other Macs

    Hello,
A couple of weeks ago I bought a Macbook Pro that included the Leopard disc, which hadn't been installed on the machine. I went away last weekend and when I returned, my house had been burglarized and my brand new Macbook Pro was gone. I would like to get another Macbook Pro to replace it, but I can't afford to pay full retail once again so I am looking into getting a used one. Anyway, I'm wondering if I were to buy one that didn't included Leopard, would I be able to install it from the disc that came with my old Mac?
    Thanks,
    Grant

No lawyers are necessary, no debate necessary either. Just read the license agreement.
FWIW - the license restricts you to using the software only on an Apple-branded computer, and only one computer per licensed copy of the software. The license does not require you to use the OS on the same computer that you purchased (I'd encourage you to read the license when you attempt to install to verify my statements -- the license is presented and you have to agree to it before the installation goes forward).
I only have the Tiger license in front of me right now, but it has all sorts of interesting tidbits in it. Technically speaking, using iChat in a commercial setting is prohibited, as is MPEG2 encoding, modifying files in a .app folder, encoding MPEG4 and H.264 is restricted to personal and noncommercial uses, using the AMR codec with a mobile device is prohibited, as is divulging flight information you obtain through the Flight Tracked widget to a third party.
As far as licenses go, it's pretty friendly. Microsoft, for example, has had licenses that prohibit benchmarking or testing their software, or using MS Word to write disparaging comments about their company; MS even had a warning at one time against using their operating systems in critical applications such as life-support, medical and weapons systems. Microsoft still requires its licensees to submit to license compliance audits on demand.

  • How do i track apple sending a new leopard disc using the fulfillment no.?

Service at apple has said that they are going to send me a new version of leopard and they give me a "gulfillment" number but i cant figure out how to track this online. any ideas?

I am in the same boat. Apple tech support said they would send me new replacement Leopard discs that came with my SR macbook. They gave me a fulfillment nnumber. This was on Dec. 19. These discs still have not been delivered. And I have not received any email to confirm its been shipped and no email with a tracking number. I am totally in the dark.
What's frustrating is that I cant install a retail version of leopard nor can I install Tiger because the installers for those are not compatible with the SR Macbook yet. So I have a macbook that is about a month old with no functionality.

  • Can we use new Leopard Install Disk on an old Macbook?

I recently purchased a new Macbook which came with pre-installed Leopard. I also have an old Macbook which has Tiger running on it. I tried to upgrade my old machine to the new Leopard using the new disks that came with the new system. But it gives an error "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". Does apple prevent such installation or is there something I need to do to avoid this error?

The Leopard which shipped with a MacBook Pro can only install on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
The Tiger that shipped with a MacBook Pro can only be installed on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
The retail Leopard which looks like * will only install on a MacBook Pro older than the release of Leopard labeled on the disk (i.e. if the MacBook Pro shipped before 10.5.1 was released and 10.5.1 is on the label of a disk of that label imaged above, then it will work).
The retail release of Tiger which looks like will not install on ANY MacBook Pro.
If you lost your original installation discs which came with a Tiger pre-installed MacBook Pro call Applecare for replacement discs as they are critical for repairing the MacBook Pro if it should need repair. AppleCare's number is here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If you are in that scenario having purchased from a non-authorized seller, ask the seller for the disc or to call AppleCare for the discs if they lost them as they must be always sold with the MacBook Pro they shipped with.

  • Why r we allowed to create String objects with & without using new operator

While creating any object, usage of the new operator is a must...but only for the string object we can create it with and also without new operator how is it possible to create an object without using new operator.

Because Mr. (Dr.?) Gosling is a kindly soul who realizes that programmers have deadlines and, when he designed Java, was not so rigid or unbending as not to realize that from time to time, certain shortcuts are warranted, even in a relatively pure language such as Java. The direct String literal assignments are a shortcut over using the new operator making Java programming (and execution; there's also a performance benefit) more streamlined.
So look not the gift horse in the mouth, but simply bask in the simplification and ease on the eyes and directly assign your little literals to your heart's content.

  • Problem with Script Using New() to Create a #Vectorshape

    Hello,
I am having a problem integrating an existing movie script into a movie I am building and I can't figure out why.
The single movie script, developed by JC in 2004,  appears below. It works perfectly in a movie all by itself. But I need to integrate it into an existing movie in which other sprites and behaviors must coexist.
The problem I am seeing is that gMem is created with the new command (can see it in the message window using put gMem), but it will not allow attachment of gMem.regPoint, gMem.centerRegPoint, and so on. These all return errors.
I would also be open to another solution to the problem. What I need to do is create rectangles that represent a plan view of a rooftop on an underlying grid and then be able to drag and place other images on it (it is for training purposes, not a game).
I am using MX2004 on a PC. Any help, deeply appreciated.

    Sean,
Thank you. Changing gMem handler from #new to #_movie.newmember did the trick. I still have not found the behavior or movie script that contains the #new handler that created the problem. I was not aware of the #_movie.newmember handler. Seems that because it is specific to a new member added into a movie that it may be more useful than just using #new when adding new members is needed. Is that so? Does it have any downsides?
Once again, thanks for your answer. By the way, I think the script was originally a J Chunick script.

  • Create a line with arcs using new SdoApi (not liniear)

    Hi
How we create a line with arcs using sdoapi (not liniear line)?
    Philipp

    Philipp,
You have to use the default constructor for JGeometry
    to build lines with arcs:
    public JGeometry(int gtype,
int srid, double x, double y, double z,
    int[] elemInfo, double[] ordinates)
Currently, this is the only way to create lines with arcs.

  • Apple Hardware Test : Use original Tiger Instal disc, or new Leopard disc?

    Hi,
I'm STILL trouble shooting my slow iMac. I figure this may point me in the general right direction.
My question is if my computer came with Tiger, and Leopard is now installed, which startup disc should I use?
    thanks

    Hi:
Try the OS X 10.5 DVD (boot while holding down the "D" key). I have, frankly, never tried to run an "old" hardware test on a "new" computer, but nothing should be harmed by trying.
Incidentally, slow is usually software-related not hardware-related.

  • Reinstall using Retail leopard discs, MacBook Pro will not detect speakers

Hi, I just purchased a MacBook pro used, and the owner lost the original discs. He sold it to me with a formated (no OS) on the HDD, because I have upgraded my older mac with leopard I decided I would reinstall with that. The MacBook Pro is the very last model before the unibody (penryn 2.4/256mb video). Upon installation the greeting video played with no sound, and pressing the volume up key (shared with F12) did nothing, and once to the desktop, hitting that button resulted in dashboard launching (like the old style keyboards would).
Now I cannot seem to raise the volume, or use ANY of the function keys, I also cannot set the trackpad to use gestures. It would pretty much seem my MacBook Pro is missing its drivers for its internal speakers (they're not listed in the sound prefpane), trackpad, and keyboard. HELP!

Well this is mildly embarrassing but it IS valuble to others in my situation!
*OKAY SOLVED* (must be a record I posted the question a minute ago).
I forgot to mention I also couldn't adjust brightness, but after running the software update, it seems all of the proper drivers have been download and installed because I now have full proper function of the MacBook Pro. Thanks for the wasted space, but again, this could be useful for others. If this is happening to you, just run the Software Update tool (under the apple logo in the top left) and let it finish its 800mb update, all will be solved.

  • Repair Disk: Use original Leopard disc or my Snow Leopard upgrade disc?

Not sure which to use before I try it. I'm currently down to about 4 gigs on my ~ 325GB system drive. I also have a 3-disk 1.5 TB raid with about 400GB free. Note: I can delete stuff from both - I will free up space on the system drive but I ran the Verify test just to see what was up and this is what I found. Wasn't really having a lot of big problems, though performance does seem a little slow. Thanks for any help.

  • No video  with Handbrake  using Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I have a Macbook without Snow Leopard - version 10.5.8
I just got a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.
My Handbrake ( version 0.9.4 i386) works fine with my Macbook.
I have the same version on the Mac Mini but after encoding I
do not get any video - just a black screen and the audio.
Other people say they have no compatibility problem with
Snow Leopard and Handbrake, but something is amiss with my
    setup.
Even when I transfer a video that I have encoded on my Macbook
and which plays perfectly there - does not show any video when
it is transferred to the Mac Mini - I only get the audio.
I also have VLC Version 0.9.9a Grishenko
for info purposes. I read that the newest Handbrake update
requires VLC for something or other.
Would really appreciate any help in this weird matter.
    Thanks

  • Wont boot from restore dvd's or new copy of Leopard!!

Well I am witts end I have an isight that I installed a new hard drive on and will not boot from the restore dvd's, or a new leopard disc(now i am out 130). It will how ever boot from drive genuis(new drive is fine) or restore dvd's from a new iMac and it will tell me that disc's are not compatible(duh just checking to see if it was a bad optical drive) any suggestions or ideas are welcome!!!

"Well I am witts end I have an isight that I installed a new hard drive on"
The iSight models are not user rerpairable except for RAM installations. All other repairs should be done at a repair shop. Apple does not even supply repair manuals (DIY) for the public for the iSight models.
If you installed the HD yourself, its possible it was not installed correctly.

  • Problem with bootcamp and windows xp disc

Hi! I've been using mac for about 3-4 years now and I am fairly acquainted with my Macbook pro.
My problems surfaced 2 days ago when a friend of mine opened it up and changed the harddrive to this: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/seagate_momentus_500gb/
My friend then did a clean install of OS X Snowleopard (not with the OS X-disc that came with my MBP) and all seemed to work fine.
But the problem is that my MBP don't seem to recognize or can't read Windows-installation DVD's. I insert the disc, the MBP reads the disc 2-3 times and then just spits it out. I have tried this with two diffrent Windows XP SP2 discs and one Windows 7 home disc with the same result.
Sometimes though (completely random) it seems to recognize the Windows disc and I can start the Windows installation via bootcamp, but halfway through the installation the disc still ejects.
The funny thing is that I ONLY have this problem with Windows-discs. OS X-discs, media-DVD's and unwritten CD's is no problem at all.
And I have repeatedly "repaired" and "reinstalled" OS X with both the snow leopard-disc and the OS X-discs that came with my MBP but I still get the same result. I have also tried SMC-resetting and doing a "safe start" but it still doesn't work.
    So... Halp? :3

  • Re Install Illustrator on a new Leopard Disk

I have two hard drives one with Tiger which I use every day and one, which I have just installed Leopard on, and which I didn't transfer the apps to but just my personal settings. I use Photoshop Illustrator, Bridge and After Effects. The disks are both on the same computer Tiger in bay 1 and Leopard in Bay 4.
I tried to re-install Illustrator but it comes up with an error. It advises calling Adobe customer support but I thought I'd ask here.
Do I have to de activate it on the Tiger disk before I re install on the Leopard disc or have some install files come over when I migrated that are messing up a re install.
I do like to have both disks on the go as I test out Leopard and find out whether it's ok to move to full time. It's not as if I am using them on other computers, it's the same machine.
I do have a G5 with the apps installed on there. This is my second installation allowed in the license agreement
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    All the best
    Rich

I guess you could look at it that way. But it's on the same machine, I can't use the Tiger disc at the same time as I use the Leopard disc can I. All I am trying to do is upgrade my Tiger disc to Leopard and my way of doing it is to duplicate my system so if things go pear shaped I can always go back. Adobe doesn't allow me to do this and I am cross about it. With the money I pay and have paid over the years, I expect a little more respect, rather than the contempt Adobe dishes out to their customers.
So I assume the only way to do this is to uninstall on the Tiger disc and then re install to the Leopard one.
