Restore X201 from Rescue and Recovery file says it will take 6 days complete

Hi,
I had a malware issue that messed up my firewall (McAfee) and so I decided to restore from a RnR file.  The file is located on my home network drive so I connnected via ethernet cable and initiated the full restore of the file.  I'm running an X201 with Win7 64bit.
I started the restore last night before I went to bed.  This morning I checked on it and it was had the progress bar showing and the estimated time remaining.  It said it was restoring partition "1 of 2", approx 5% complete, with approx 8800 minutes remaining.  12 hours later, it has approx 8200 minutes remaining.  Yep, about 6 days.
I've done a restore before but only back to factory settings.  This 6 day restore can't be normal.
What does the RnR file contain?  Does it only take an image of the user partition of the drive or does it also take an image of the system partition (Q?  What if I forced the laptop to power down and restarted the restore process?  Will I nuke the system?  Or can I recover from that with my RnR file?
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Additional comments.  If have home computer 1 and computer 2, does backup to Network imply you have a /RRbackups folder on computer 1, which is a backup of computer 2?
If computer 1 has RNR installed, maybe you can copy backups to another medium(cd/dvd). /RRbackups would have to reside on the local(C) drive of computer 1. Then you can REFESH computer 2 from the backup medium, avoiding ethernet issues.
If backup of computer 2 is on computer 1, you can reach in and restore single files which you might Love.  Glad you
had your DATA backed up via other means!!
You mentioned restore of 1 of 2 paritions.  Lots of debate lately about the System Reserve partition used by bitlocker.
Do you have a windows 7 which supports bitlocker? (ie, windows ultimate, professional).
After you get your Factory reset calmed down, could you post a  diskmanagement screen of your partitions? I did a clean install of windows 7, so only have 1 partition.  If you bought a Lenovo with win7, you got win 7, win re and RNR factory reset partition. If RNR takes a base backup C drive, maybe Factory partition, maybe a bitlocker partition are backed up.
Depending on which options your choose for RNR standalone restore (6 days), you choose base, 3 weeks ago incremental, etc.
If you interrupt the restore of any of the above C drive is trash(brick). You made the correct decision to do factory reset.
If you love your base backup, you can tell RNR  standalone to start there.  IF you astro exit out of a incremental backup restore, wax. Go back to base.  So you astro out of the incremental restore!. Simple, do the base restore, then come back and do the incremental restore.

I have just added a time machine to my iMac and it is saying it will take 11 days to do the first back up.  Any ideas?  It is only 355GB but is being backed up  wirelessly but 11 days?
    Help.

Hi lajetidreaming, I'm in the same boat; "See you in 8 days".
As LaPastenague says, use an ethernetcable for the initial backup.
And I will add; Since TimeMachine don't accept any interruptions during the initial backup, make a small backup first. That is - exclude a number of 'secundary' folders like music etc.
When you have one backup completed, TimeMachine is much more forgiving about interrupts, rebooting your Mac and so.
    Good luck!

  • Cant restore from rescue and recovery discs

    Hi Guys
I bought a set of Windows 7 64bit Lenovo Rescue and Recovery Discs approx. 18 months ago so I could "restore" my X201 if and when the hard disk died, well the day has come and the discs dont work !!!
I have attempted to "restore" to the new hard disk 3 times and this is now starting to become a joke.
I boot the 1st disk, then I'm asked to insert the 2nd and then 3rd disks, I dont have a 4th disk but the process asks me for one. I believe that this is all working as it takes a number of hours and the drive lights is flickering except when I'm being asked to insert the next disc.
After the final re-boot. following the "Setting up drivers - 100%" on the screen I get a message box that says "Setup cant configure windows for your configuration", this is after I have had the "Starting Windows 7" booting on the screen.
    Has anyone had any experience with Win 7 64bit R & R discs for a X201 ???
    TIA
    NG

I assume your issue is laptop boot mode related.
In order to restore from Lenovo Recovery discs set laptop should be in legacy boot mode. Check out this option in BIOS setup. Unfortunately you'll can't change boot mode later. But this mode just speeds up a boot process only 2-3 secs.
Boot and installation processes don't inform the customer about error boot mode related.
Check out the 1st disc. If it consists a folder like BOOT and files like BOOTMGR and WINRE.WIM (all of them are for boot process) and folder like FACTORYRECOVERY - it's OK and your 1st data disk is bootable too.
If you had partition like Lenovo_Recovery (Q: usually) on your x201 with factory images you could make Factory_Recovery Discs set yourself w/o purchasing it from Lenovo.

  • Restore from Rescue and Recovery 4.1 FAILED

The machine is a Thinkpad T43 running XP. Rescue and Recovery 4.1 backing up to a network share.
Last night, while using nCleaner, I accidentally wiped 30% of my C: partition (I have two: C and D). Since I run a full weekly backup to a network share using Rescue and Recovery 4.1 (RR4.1), I used RR4.1 to do a full restore (via the "simple" interface), however it not only didn't work, it made things worse!
It seems that while R&R 4.1 recovered the programs that had gotten wiped out on the C partition, it deleted almost everything in the C:\Documents and Settings folder (profile information, settings, Thunderbird mail, etc). It also cleaned out my entire D partition!
R&R 4.1 seems to be gone now, BTW (or it's hidden somewhere and I can't find it).
I'm thinking of installing version 4.2 + the patch and trying to restore again.  Any idea what I can try at this point?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Bob,
which version of client security do you have?
From Lenovo site: "Rescue and Recovery 4.1 is only compatible with Client Security Solution 8.0 or later."
    or
have you tried uninstalling 4.0 and then 4.1 new?
    Regards
    Andy

  • Rescue and Recovery "File is in use and can't be copied" errors - T61 - WXP

    Hi and thanks -
When Rescue and recovery backs up, I frequently get  the error message, "This file is in use and can't be backed up.  Close all programs and try again" [my paraphrase].
Here is everything I have tried:
Restarting Windows and backing up "clean" - I have also attempted doing a "Clean boot" by stopping all services in "msconfig". - still got many of the error messages.
Starting in Safe mode - Rescue and restore doesn't work at all
Starting up in "ThinkVantage" and doing a backup from there - Rescue and restore will restore from a previous copy, but will not back up.
This backup error has gone on ever since I bought this macine used in January 2011, and I have never cared much.  But recently the machine had a "fatal error", and all of the backups were useless.  I had to comletely restore the machine to factory settings, which means I had to re-load all of my data and programs - an arduous task.  I do not want to meet this same fate again.
    Can you help me?
    Thanks!

Have you tried running a backup with your virus scanner / internet security software turned off? Sometimes these software can "hang" on files or folders with the intent to protect them and therefore prevent them being read
Before attempting the above please ensure your system has no Internet access

  • Rescue and recovery files prompt issues

Hi all, I want to ask if there is a method to config rescue and recovery so it will automatically skip/retry files when it ran into trouble backing up?
At the moment R & R prompt me every time it tries to backup a file and failed. It gives me option to skip or retry backing up, that is fine with me other than the fact that I run my backup mostly at night expecting to have it done when I wake up so I can take my laptop to work. Now most of the times I have to cancel it when I woke up (because it is still at 2% or something) and I just do not have time to sit and go through all the prompts it has.
I have search the forum and there was a similar post last year when someone suggest to keep all those files in exclude list. This might work given time but it will takes me hours to sit through all the prompts and copy all the files names manually before I can try this solution. I wonder if there is a configuration file somewhere where I can instruct R & R to automatically skip/retry in this situation?
    Thanks!

The school probably loaded a custom opertaing system image which most likely does not include the restore partition.
You will need to find a set of recovery discs if you want a factory image. Alternatively, You can load plain windows if you find an OEM install cd and use the product key number on the COA sticker located on the bottom of your Thinkpad. The drivers download from here.

  • X220 factory restore issue with Rescue and Recovery

I have X220 which I enjoyed very much for the last one year. Warranty is just expired and unfortunately the system starts act crazy. I decided to reformat and go back to factory setting stage by using Rescue and Recovery. I could get to the Full Restore and could click full factory restore. The system ask me to restart but instead reformat the HD, the previous OS kicks in and reboot as previous setting. Please help!!!

Are you sure Q: partition is absolutely empty? Normally .WIM files on partition Q: are stored in hidden directory FactoryRecovery.
Check out Lenovo Factory Recovery Discs within Control Panel for creating factory image media.

  • Attempting to update software and the process says it will take over 600 hrs. Why?

I am attempting to install available updates (4 total). My system says it updating Safari and it will take over 600 hrs. Can anyone help with a suggestion?

The time to install may change after a few minutes to something more reasonable. BTW, I don't think it's ever a good idea to install a number of updates together, especially, but not only, if any restarts are involved. I would run them one at a time, making certain each one has been installed successfully. Or, get them separately from Apple Downloads and install from the Desktop.

  • Can't exit from Rescue and Recovery 4

I have been having problems with my Z61t laptop so I thought I would use the R&R recovery disks that I created.  I was able to start the process with the recovery disk but when I went to do a recovery, a box on the screen asks that I insert the disk labeled "Final Disk."  I don't have such a disk and was never instructed to label a disk with that label.  I tried inserting the final disk in the series that I made, which is labeled disk 5, but that doesn't work.
I would like to exit the R&R program, but there is no way to quit.  When I reboot, it automatically goes into R&R and there is no apparent way for me to escape it.  I even tried booting from a bootable CD to reinstall Win XP (SP3), but the setup program informs me that it can't see a hard drive.  Apparently R&R still has control of the computer and is blocking access to the hard drive.
How do I get R&R to terminate?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
to me this looks like an issue of a missing SATA driver.
In this case I would advice to go into the BIOS and change the SATA mode from AHCI to Compatibility. Once this is done you can use also the Recovery Disks and the restor will work.
Let me know, if this worked out.
    Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery Files to a different machine

I have used R&R weekly to back up my system (Lenovo 3000-N100 0768-2CU, WinXP 32-bit) to an external USB HDD. My BIOS chip set died, and now I am wondering if I can recover only my files to another machine.
I don't want to install the full blown Lenovo system to another set of hardware. I only want to get the individual files (office documents, PDFs, etc...) and copy the files to another existing system.
It seems that this is not possible, because the R&R program saves everything as compressed, binary data. Is this correct? Is there anything I can do?
Thank you very much for any help or advice you can provide.

You can use a USB enclosure for the hard drive to access your personal data.
I don't know if it's possible to extract data from the R&R backups.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 DOES NOT RESCUE/COPY LARGE FILES?!

    Hello all,
Thank you in advanced for helping me out/any helpful advice you may have.
    System:
    Windows XP Professional
    T61
    4 GB RAM
2.50 Ghz Dual Core Intel Processor
    120 GB Hard Drive
140m nVidia Quadro video card (256 MB available memory I believe)
    Problem Summary:
I ran into the unlucky computer problem of having a Microsoft.net framework addon for Firefox 3.5.3 result in a fatal interaction leaving me unable to boot up in both safe and normal mode. If you do have this addon, please uninstall it NOW, so that it does not happen to you. There is no current fix or patch for it as far as I know. Luckily, I have the (formerly) fantastic Rescue and Recovery 4 to backup my files and fix things.
So in sequence of what I did:
Tried several different attempts to fix problem to no avail (via google searches on the Rescue and Recovery Browser)
Decided that it would be best to just reformat the drive and start a clean install.
I had not done a real back up recently (several months due to my own carelessness and being busy).
I chose to do a full factory restore using the 'Rescue My Files' option, since I had never done a backup using the included Lenovo Software, I usually just ran my own manual ones in Windows.
To be on the safe side, I just decided to transfer my entire hard drive directory 'C:' to my 500 GB External Western Digital Hard Drive. I know I didn't really NEED all the files (like program files I would just need to reinstall anyway). I just wanted to return my computer to how it was as fast as possible.
Rescue and Recovery registered as copying all my data (rougly 50-60 GB) of data to my external USB Hard Drive.
I then unplugged my External USB Drive From the computer once it said it was complete. Rescue and Recovery proceeds with the factory restore.
Things are going well, factory restore is successful, no problems yet.
Once Windows was functional again and I had remade my usernames and settings just as it was before the crash, I plugged in my External HD again to restore my files.
Every file that I copied was there EXCEPT FOR MY MOST IMPORTANT ONES. It appears the directory, 'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\My Documents'
    AND
    'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Desktop'
DID NOT COPY. I DID A DOUBLE CHECK, and the program said that all files had transferred successfully and I saw the directories on the USB Hard Drive in the Rescue and Recovery View. (I did not do a double check on another windows computer with my USB Hard Drive, however as I did not have access to one at the time and I was trusting in the Lenovo software, which did actually manage to rescue all the files, except for my most important ones.)
    Is there anyway way that:
That because these files were so large (probably account for 50% of all data copied to my external USB Drive or 10-15 GB a piece), that the Rescue and Recovery file simply "passed over them"? The other files appeared to copy perfectly fine.
There was an error with the program, like a file size limit cap that Rescue and Recovery cannot surpass so they were just skipped over?
My own carelessness? Are all the root files not selected when you choose the entire 'C:' Drive as a directory? I did just choose to copy/rescue the entire 'C:' Drive and everything else (besides my two most important files) seemed to copy over so I do not beleive that this is the case.
I did not individually, select each file in the 'C:\Documents and Settings' because I assumed that it would select each of the root files within it. (Is that not the case?)
That the files are 'hiding' somewhere due to their large size?
    Most importantly of all:
IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I CAN RECOVER MY DATA? There is about 2 years worth of photos, music, documents, etc. that I would like to have back that I do not have a recent back up of.
If anything, does anyone know WHY this happened? It was my understanding that Lenovo Rescue and Recovery was some of the best software for emergency crashes out there. And now it has failed me miserably. I'd at least like to know why it happened so that I may not repeat my mistake (or put too much faith in Lenovo) for the future.
I've run some data recovery software but I know it will not recovery all the files that I once had in their state before my hard drive was reformatted back to factory settings.
    Thank you,
    -nofeet3

    Hello , and ARGH !
I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RIGHT NOW !
If anybody could help this would really be appreciated .
    Here is the story
    Lenovo SL500
    Windows XP SP3 I think
    Specs maybe not too important
My computer has some corrupted file and will not boot in normal or safe mode . When I try to do either , it starts booting , but before it finishes the load-up-windows screen , it displays an error message which says
    " lsass.exe - System Error
the endpoint format is invalid "
and then goes no further , and the machine simply restarts itself again and would do this indefinitely if I didn't stop it .
SO when it starts booting and shows the Lenovo Logo , I press the Lenovo Help/Tool Button to enter Rescue and Recovery [not sure what version it is , I cannot find information within it] and it gives me the option to Rescue files before recovering the system . I have the same problem as Nofeet3.
It rescues all the small files
BUT WILL NOT RESCUE ANY OF MY IMPORTANT FILES
CERTAINLY IT DOES NOT RESCUE ANYTHING BIG [or bigger than roughly 2mb]
It rescues picture files BUT WILL NOT RESCUE MUSIC FILES !!
It may not even rescue bigger picture files , but I haven't noticed any pictures it has not copied since I can't go through ALL my picture files to see exactly what it has / hasn't copied.
However , not a single music file is copied.
It will NOT show up on the hard drive . What is strange , is when I try to plug the hard drive back in to try and copy the music files again , as I tried it a few times , it asks me if I would like to Write these files over the files already there , as though it has already copied. I check the hard disk , and these fils have definitely NOT copied onto the Disk . They are nowhere to be found .
I don't think the files are hiding , but if they are , maybe somebody could tell me where.
I suspect though that Rescue and Recovery has "recorded"  the files as having been copied , some kind of record , EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVEN'T !! Or if they have , they are absolutely invisible . WEIRD !
    nofeet3
It is NOT because you selected the whole C drive , and is not due to any carelessness on your part. I have selected all files individually , and have tried time and time and time again , when I plug the ext hard drive into my other laptop to see if the files copy , they don't . I have tried this over and over and over again desperately all today , it is not working , even going so far as to select individual files rather than bigger directories to try and transfer in smaller in smaller batches ,just in case it couldn't handle large transfers all at once . That is not the case either . It just simply will not transfer files roughly bigger than 2mb . NO MUSIC !! THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING !!
I am not sure at present whether this program can rightly be called "Rescue and Recover". It is one of the main reasons I selected Lenovo  , and this is not a good demonstration of it's abilites at all .
    PLEASE HELP ME !!
ANY HELP WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED !!
Thanks so much in advance for any help anybody can give , and best regards ,
    Carl .

  • T43 rescue and recovery process failure

    Hello,
I have an old T43 which I use for knockabout work in the garage and shop.  It was getting pretty slow and suffering from registry bloat, so I backed up my files to a usb HDD and booted up to the Rescue and Recovery CD from the factory set, (boot disk, disks 1-6 and the supplemental disk).
I selected the restore to factory option, and it proceeded as expected.  It then asked for the supplemental disk if I had it, and then very quickly asked for disk 1.  The product recovery portion started and then rather quickly threw an error dialog saying, "An internal error has caused this process to fail".  When I click OK it throws a second error, "Couldn't find a service partition!  You must restart the process."
From here it just kind of goes in circles, asking for the supplemental disk, then disk 1, and then fails again.  I also tried rebooting and it did the same thing.
I then tried reinserting the boot CD and selected "Rescue Files", and "Choose which files to rescue from the current contents"  just to see what is actually there now.  It rather effectively destroyed everything on both drives, and now all there is to be found on C are the rescue and recovery files.  There was a service partition there before, D drive which is now gone.  I'm not sure at what stage of the process it was meant to recreate that partition but it failed to do so.
I'm rather perplexed because I know I used these CDs once in the past to do this job and they worked fine.  Have I missed some step?  It's a little frustrating because I've gone from a working (albeit slow) system to now a brick
Could anyone suggest a next step to take?
    Thanks!

    Go to Solution.

Alrighty, I had an ah ha moment.  I decided to give up and try the R&R again from the start.  It appears that if you have an external monitor connected, for some reason after the CD read portion and restart, the monitor goes black after about 5 minutes of the preinstall script running.  Not sure why exactly, but it did it both times.  The first time I mistakenly thought it had completed and rebooted.  This time I just let it sit there and after about another 10 minutes video returned and it came back up in a visual environment.  By the time it completed all drivers were loaded.  Now I just have to decide whether I should bother upgrading any of them, lest I end up back in the same position again

  • Rescue and Recovery -- USB external hard drive

Can anyone recommend the best external hard drive to use for Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery?  I've been doing some research and I'm concerned about the Maxtor "one touch" software.  If I choose to purchase a Maxtor external hard drive should I go in and delete any software on the drive before I back up from Rescue and Recovery? I have been having a lot of problems with Rescue and Recovery -- it's difficult to delete past backups, and I get hangups.  But eventually it usually backs up.  I have read reviews for the Maxtor one touch software and it sounds like it doesn't work well for restoring an entire system (problems with certain files, such as hidden files, etc.).  But maybe that's not true?  Also, do you recommend that I delete all previous backups before running a Rescue and Recovery backup?  If not, if I ever had to restore from it, would it automatically use the most current backup?
Thanks in advance for any advice!  I'm a novice, but I want to make sure that everything is backed up properly.

    Herik,
I'm not sure  I'm looking in the right place - the folders you specified don't exist, or they aren't where you indicated. I can only get to "Rescue and Recovery" in the HK - Local Machine registry folder - nothing further there. Here's what I have:

  • Rescue and Recovery Issues!

    Hello All,
I purchased a T60p about a year and a half ago along with the 3yr. extended warranty.  I have been trying to recover a saved backup on my hard disk since I have had some problems with Windows but have run into a serious problem.  I have tried to restore from rescue and recovery but keep getting a password entry dialog box.  I didn't set one up since I've owned the computer and this is confirmed by the dialog box that states for me to set one up and try again.  I even tryed to use the "forgot password" option and it still sends me around in circles for a password entry.  I have contacted customer service several times and got a set of rescue and recovery discs to set it up to factory state but the password thing still comes up on bootup even from the CD.  The last suggestion from customer service was to purchase a SATA drive-to-USB cable to back up the data to another computer.  But other than seeing the contents of the drive directories I cannot back it up (probably a protected partition).  I am at a loss here and was wondering if anyone could help.
The files on this hard drive are vital for me to recover as they contain lots of personal pictures of family (some now gone), CAD work, as well as other irreplaceable info.
Can anyone suggest a course of action?  Is there a service that can retrieve the data?  I have no problem reloading the applications I just need the data files.
    Couple of questions:
Why can't I reinstall Windows from the discs sent to me from Lenovo (only the R&R disc is bootable)?
Can I reinstall Windows on the drive without loosing the data on the R & R partition?
    Please Help!

    Hi Nemo,
My questions may be totally irrelevant, but I'm going to ask them anyway. Just in case.
Some versions of R&R, when launched, would ask if you want to set a password or protect the backups with your windows password. As you don't mention having tried your windows log-in password, if you have / had one, have you tried using it or, if set up, the default admin account password?
Also what about the good old enter key i.e. no password, or trying "admin"?

I am currently analzying logs from "rescue and recovery" and "swshare" program and notice SMA.log and capture.sma in particular. I want to verifiy what do each of those 2 logs mean. does one mean the data that was successfully backed up and the other one means what was restored to the machine? the restore.log contains a specific date, was that the date the data was restored to the machine?
    Thanks in advance!!!

The logs gets created automatically and have the information of the particular task which is completed or processed.
    Best Regards,
    Tanuj
