Restored computer.  Missing files.

I just re formatted my computer, and had every file deleted. I re installed iTunes, but I can't find a way to download the songs I purchased. Is there a way I can re download things from iTunes?

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link you'll be able to email your query: iTMS Customer Service
If you have an iPod that still has the purchases on it the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Time machine restore randomly missing files

Macbook refused to boot, apple store cleared it up, told me to do a backup from time capsule.  Files that were on my desktop are missing.  The time capsule reports doing complete backups frequently and as recently as monday.  Why am I missing files and folders that were clearly there?  I can go back further and find certain files, but shouldn't they all appear from a restore?

Restore can have issues.. how did you restore.. migrate your files? Or do it another way?
Manually restore files if you need to.. but if you were on Mountain Lion and you restored to Mavericks.. don't expect things to be the same.
For actual migration instructions look at Pondini here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
He does not have mavericks but look at the closest.. ie Mountain Lion.
    Look at the problems.
And be aware things like restoring to identical user causes problems.
Restore is also covered in Q14-17 here .

And many many issues in the troubleshooting section.
BTW you will see comments from several people here to do some disk images.. use software like CCC or superduper and keep TM for incremental only.. it is not so great for restore of a whole disk.

  • Re-install issue:  "missing files" ?

My MacBook was getting slow, so I decided to try a clean re-install after backing everything up to an external drive. After I reinstalled OS X Tiger, I reloaded my apps and libraries of preferences and all from the external drive. When I tried to launch Keynote, I got a message saying, "Files that iWork needs are missing. To restore the missing files, use the iWork installer to reinstall iWork." So I tried that; I trashed the apps, deleted the iWork preferences (.plists), and re-installed from the disc, then ran Software Update until it said I was up to date. Now I'm getting the same error message. Any idea how I figure out what files are missing?
    Thanks -
    Eric

I was installing Dreamweaver (Mac version) and received this message. The support people gave me the tech note that says to install the most recent ExtendScript update and if this doesn't fix the problem uninstall the entire CS3 Suite. Do either or both of these things if all you have is a day to blow off. AND after you reinstall the entire suite you still have to get all the updates - more time wasted. FYI, the first time I had this issue last year I did this and it didn't fix the problem because, at least then, the uninstaller didn't remove the old ExtendScript files.
This was the real fix. Search for ExtendScript on your system. Throw all the folders in the Trash. Restart your system and run the CS3 installer. If you watch the installer the first thing it does is repair the current installation. Because the ExtendScript folder is missing it replaces it and installs the components you want. Fix time - 2 minutes.

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

  • Please help restore DMG missing partition and access file vault.

I am quite emotional at the moment, if anyone can help me access my files, pictures of my baby daughter and important documents.. I would be extremely grateful and willing do make a donation via paypal.
I have a 160 GB hard drive, which was partitioned as 30GB Spare and 130GB with my operating system and user files, including my filevault user directory.
My computer was downloading movies which filled up the 130GB partition, most of the 130GB is contained in my personal filevault user directory, my computer became very slow and unresponsive and i tried to free up space by deleting files which i no longer needed.
The machine became slow and un-responsive and required a number of forceful shut downs and restarts until the machine would no longer boot up, I inserted the OSX CD and attempted to boot from CD and use disc utility which now only displays my 30GB storage space, I was forced to install OSX on the remaining 30GB partition.
Now running OSX on the 30GB partition i used DISK DRILL to scan my hard disk for the missing 130GB partition which it did and i was able to save this as a DMG file to a external hard disk, now i am able to get this DMG to mount in the OSX i am running on the spare 30GB space, however i am not able to access the majority of the data inside the file vaulted user account.
I would like to know, would it be possible to restore the missing partition, as it remains on the HD but seems to be hidden.
Or is there somehow i can login to the user account on the mounted DMG ?
I am not very familiar with using terminal and would be extremely grateful for any advice or support leading to the recovery of my files.

Is there anyway to recover the larger partition ? In disk utility i made the mistake of pressing the - button which has left me with the following:

Is there anyway to restore and boot the missing partition ?
Probably not.     You've now deleted the partition.  It was probably useless anyway, though.
When i run disk drill or other disk recovery tools i am able to see the partition including including the files and my personal sparsebundle.
But you can't open the sparse bundle, much less see any of the files inside it, right?
Since you've already recovered the (probably-damaged) sparse bundle containing your encrypted home folder, you'll have to work with it.
I'd strongly recommend making another copy of that on another external HD and putting that "on the shelf" before doing anything else to it.   I suspect you have little chance of recovery, but don't take the risk of further damage.
You haven't answered my earlier questions:
Have you tried to run Repair Disk on either the original or copied partition?
If that doesn't help, this might:  http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/fixfilevault.html
Do you have Time Machine backups?
Obviously, now that the partition has been deleted, you can't run repair disk on it, but try it on the recovered disk image.
You need more expertise than either Christopher or I have.  Since Apple no longer uses "legacy" File Vault, it will be more difficult for them to help, too.
Is your Mac covered by AppleCare?  If so, give them a call.
If not, your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar might be able to help:  http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
Or check for an Apple Authorized Service Provider: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US
If not, one of them may know of an outside service than can help.  That will be quite expensive.

  • Restoring iphoto but missing files

I am restoring iPhoto photos from a backup CrashPlan and it apparently is missing files to actually PLAY the movies.
In the process of restoring, iPhoto said I had to update before I could restore my old photos.  I clicked on update.
Now it is "writing new iphoto library data."
However, I continually get messages that pop up saying, "The movie file "SANYO776.dv" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly. I have the option of "searching" or "cancelling."  I have to cancel because there is nothing on the computer to search yet.  When I  click on Cancel a message comes up "searching for movie data in file Clip 01.dv. I have to click on STOP, then the previous message comes up again, I click on Cancel.  It continually repeats about 4-6 times with EACH movie it is searching for.
Is there a way to set iPhoto to do the SAME PROCEDURE when it can't FIND a file??? Just cancel it? I know that can be done when you're putting in duplicate photos.  IPhoto will show a message where you can check to do the same procedure on duplicate photos.
I'll never get 9 hours worth of photos restored having to click on STOP and CANCEL 4-6 times for EVERY video that I've ever recorded since 2007.
This restore process really is quite impossible.  I'm not sure I'd recommend doing a RESTORE files to a computer.  Might as well start from scratch.  I may never accomplish this.

A Volume is a Hard Disk, or a partiton on a Hard Disk.
Hard Disks can be structured in different ways to hold the data, and iPhoto requires a Disk/Volume that is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If the library is on a disk with a different format then the data won't be stored in an appropriate structure.
I'm 99.999% certain that Crashplan's server is not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). VIrtually no servers are.
So, when you write the iPhoto Library to that server the data is not structured properly, and that's why you have problems when you restore.
It should be noted that ordinary files won't have a problem, in this sense they are Mac compatible. But an iPhoto Library is not an ordinary file. It's a complex ecosystem of interlinked databases, caches, metadata files plus you images. This is also true of Aperture and 3rd party apps like DevonThink Office and so on.
The best you can hope to do is get everything down from Crashplan first, and then see about cleaning up the mess.

  • Loaded 7.3-does not work-restored system-does not work-missing files?

I downloaded 7.3 and got a message that it could not upgrade the version of IPOD software found on cpu. Please uninstall and try again. Did that. Also removed all Itunes and Ipod software versions. Still got message. Decided to restore computer to before the 7.3 download. Now get error message that ITunes cannot run because files are missing. Doesn't say which ones. Any idea on how to restore old version?

My workflow is to basically backup my negative collection by scanning at the highest resolution possible and save them at full bit depth as Tiffs on offline storage. I then duplicate all the files as large JPGs and store them on my local machine. These are then all duplicated again and down sampled to 1024*768 to be synced with the iPad. After 2 1/2 years and a 16 page file documenting all the bugs, I finally got the small files to sync with an iPad 4. After all is said and done, it only took about 7GB to sync 50K Jpgs but did end up with a 20GB "Other" file that no one from Apple can explain. I have been seeing these "Other" files for a while and think they are some sort of memory corruption and the only way to get rid of it is to restore the ipad.
Bottom line, iTunes for Windows is terrible, very buggy, and unsupported by Apple. They can only help you trouble shoot restarting problems but there is no escalalation path for things that don't work. iTunes basically has a lot of trouble with samll number of large files and even a large number of small files.
I have been using Lighroom to convert the Tiffs to JPGs but ran into a problem that Adobe engineers didn't know about. Lightroom will only support a maximum of 512 mega pixels and won't load any files over this size. It appears it may load them as PSDs but not as Tiffs. Problem is Lightroom won't give any error message for files it won't load so there is no way to trouble shoot it.
What does work flawlessly is using Photoshop/Scripts/Image Processor.
In protest of Apples apathy I took every IOS device I ever purchased back to the Apple store and challenged them to either make them work or refund them. They gave a full refund for every device I erver purchased including $299 for the original touch which came out to about $3500. I even sent a letter to Tim Cook ([email protected]) but he didn't care either.

  • I have recently had some music files removed from itunes.  The  originals are still on my ipod.  How do i restore these missing items to my itunes......

I have recently had some music files removed from itunes.  This was not supposed to happen!  However the originals (consisting largely of playlists) ae still on my ipd and I do not want to do any syncing until I have resolved the issue. Is there any way to  restore these missing tunes from the ipod to my itunes?  Grateful for any input........

You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
NOTE:  Songs previously purchased from the iTunes Store can also be re-downloaded at no cost, from the iTunes Store Purchased screen.

ARE THESE FILES SOMEWHERE IN THE COMPUTER>  ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

    Hi,
It may be that your files have accidentally been hidden.  To check this, try the following.
A useful utility for viewing all the files on your PC is called Free Commander, on the link below, as it displays folders that the Operating System normally hides and has a good search function.
    http://www.snapfiles.com/php/download.php?id=107872&a=7122339&tag=601108&loc=10
This is a zipped file.  If you don't have an extraction utility installed, download and install 7-Zip which can be used to open this so that you can run the installer.  With 7-Zip installed, right click the Free Commander file, select 7-Zip, select Extract Files and click OK.  Now open this newly extracted folder and run the installer.
Once installed, launch Free Commander and use this utility to browse to the location of your missing files - can you now see the files?  If you can, right click the first file and select Properties.  Remove the tick from the box next to 'Hidden' and click Apply to save the change.  Repeat this for each of your missing files.  When done. close Free Commander and hopefully your files will now be visible when viewed in Windows.

how do i restore missing files for i work 09 as it is asking me to reinstall but cant find the disk?

    Hello Jessica472,
It sounds like you need to recover some missing files but do not have access to the iWork '09 disc you used to install it. If you have a Time Machine backup and know what files you need, you can use the "Restoring specific files or folders" section of the following article to restore them:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
If you do not have Time Machine, you will need the disc to reinstall the software suite.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Missing files following time machine restore

I recently had my hard drive replaced by Apple following a recall of the particular drive installed in my machine when I bought it. Before taking it into Apple I had completely backed up my machine onto an external drive using Time Machine. Once the drive was replaced I restored the system using Time Machine but since have noticed a couple of quirks.
The first is that I'm missing files from iPhoto. The missing files are from my most recent upload and are a combination of images and video which were uploaded together. iPhoto knows they should be there because it's showing the file name (and video length for the video files) but the files themselves are missing and cannot be found when searching for them in Spotlight or when using the "show file" option in iPhoto.
The other major bugbear is that I'm missing a lot of my album artwork within iTunes - this includes for music, TV shows and movies. These were all there before the hard drive was replaced but are missing following the reinstall.
Fortunately I asked Apple to provide me with the original drive which I have but I'm unsure about what I need to do to fix the two issues above. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Restore your iPhoto and iTunes libraries in the time-travel interface. If that doesn't work, try an older snapshot. Some files may be missing because the drive was malfunctioning. That was the reason for the recall.
