Restored folders in Trash at start up

Some time recently, I didn't note when it began, I've noticed that some 'restored' folders are placed in my Trash, each time I start up. It never used to happen.
How do I find out what's causing this and fix it? Hmm. Does it need fixing? It is after all only nuisance value.
Thanks to whomever

Ow!! Help!
Yes, you're right, they are temporary files - I hadn't checked to see if they from force quit operations. But I have been having to do that quite a lot of late. In that regard, Tiger and iMac Intel are not proving as user friendly as my old iMac - it didn't have all the gee whiz stuff, but it was as reliable as the day is long. And no, I'm not trying to do more, and they each had the same amount of RAM. Still perhaps the new machine requires more - I haven't been able to afford the extra that was recommended when I bought the new machine.
Today I lost my entire Address Book entries: Just as I started to create a new folder, the program stopped responding. When I went to Force Quit, the usual message about losing recent changes was made. Well darn it, it saved the addresses I had just shifted (as Recovered Files) in Trash, but wiped out the rest of my Address Book. This is serious, as it contains all my family, friends and business details - sure I can get most of it back from my backup disk, but a similar thing happened to the bookmarks in my browser. Is the portent of things to come?

My time machine wont let me restore folders it restores it as an empty folder after saying "copying 48 items - estimating time remaining" if I try to copy them manually it will either say it is copying them then ask me if I want to replace the existing folder of add a folder with the same name adding .localized to the end then it again adds the blank folder except it says "0KB of 64GB - estimating time remaining..." or "1 byte of 64GB - estimating time remaining" I have verified the disk in disk utility and it said it was "OK"

Is there a solution to years old error message "Cannot create a system restore point [service cannot be started in Safe Mode (0x8007043c)]" I have been trying to create a restore point or image on an external hard drice, but I get the quoted message
and the system is NOT in safe mode.  I have reviewed all the previous suggestions on this forum to no avail.  Are there any new suggestions.  My computer had Windows 7 installed and I have no source to re-load the OS.  Ralph

    Hi,
So actually you're not in safe mode (not black background, no "safe mode" on the left-bottom of the screen), right?
I think something is causing your PC thinking itself is in the safe mode, run sfc/scannow and chkdsk /f/r, check if the two tools can find any error.
Or perform a startup repair in recovery console, check the result

If it there is a backup you will find in in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.  (Just open Finder>Go>Go To Folder..., past this in the path box and click Go.)

  • HT1414 How do I sync my device to a different device's library?  Do I have to restore to factory settings and start over? Or, is there a simpler process where i can just select the library/device that I want to sync with?

Is there an easier way other than restoring to factory settings and starting over?

Open itunes, connect ipod, select what you want, sync.
No need to restore.  Just sync.  It will erase the current content and replace with the content of the new computer.

  • When I restart I get a screen asking to restore the last sesion or start new, how do I set it to start new each time without being asked?

When I close a session I close all the tabs first then exit out. The next time on I get an error screen telling me everything didn't close right and asking me if I wanted to restore the old tabs or start a new session. I am not interested in restoring the old tabs as I want to start a new session. If the old tabs come up I have to close them out anyway. How do I by pass that error screen and just restart a new session automatically going to my home page without all the extra tabs and without being bothered about it? Never had this problem with the older versions. Maybe I should go back to the older versions and forget about any updates. But I don't know how to do that.

  • I am trying to free my mac book for space. everytime i try to empty the deleted items in trash, it starts and stop without clearing the items. how do i empty the trash

I am trying to free my Mac book for space in oredr to upgrade. Everytime i try to empty the deleted items in the trash, it starts and stops immediately without clearing the items. How do i achieve this?

I had the same problem yesterday with an application file that was deleted after installation of an update. I used "Put Back" to move it back to its original location, then used "Show Package Contents" to delete/empty trash for small groups of files at a time. I suppose the application file itself may have been too large to empty at one time. I hope this helps.

  • Can't restore folders from Time Machine after Lion

    Hello guys,
after upgrading to Lion 10.7.1 I can't seem able to restore some old folders from Time Machine
Here's what happens: I log in TM, I can scroll through my old backups, I can choose the folders I want to restore, I can click on the folder, but when the systems tries to restore it, it stops saying that I don't have the privileges to access file A in the folder (and then all the procedure is stopped).
Oddly (at least for me) if I try to restore just that same file A (and not the whole folder) that I should have no privileges for, from the same old backup, I can do it, but I have to give the system my password: It pops up a window saying something "Finder is willing to make some modification, can you authorize?"  (forgive i'm translating the alert from another language) and then I can restore it.
Has anybody else this problem and how can be solved?
    Many thanks
Ps: I did a simple upgrade on Lion, no partition, no blank disk, and never changed anything in my user preferences, it's always the same, administrator
Pps: Before Lion I could restore easily exactly the same folders and files I tried to restore with Lion

But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

  • CAF-GP: Need help restoring objects from trash

    Hi All,
I've accidentally deleted a whole lot of development objects from GP Design Time (most of them from Life and Work Events - US folder), unaware of copying as copies and references. I spent hours restoring almost all of them to their original folders except for a few.
Could someone please help me identify, with the help of a reference portal, the original location of the following objects - as to where they belong in Public Folders?
Please find a screenshot of my trash here.
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/omdo3o
I greatly appreciate any help. Please let me know if more info is required.
    Cheers,
    Rajit

I could restore most of the objects to their locations except some of them I believe to be copies.

  • Winlogin is deleting folders and files on start-up

We have been using Crystal Reports Server X1 Release 2 since 2007.  Week ago folders started dissaperaing and found out that there was a conflict with McCaffe update that deleted business objects folder and Tomcat stopped working.  Now we are trying to restore VM from prior file deletion and everytime we boot that up winlogin seems to be applying settings and deleting folders again.  Help!!!

Not to insult ... this is presented as it is to be sure all facts are given ...
There are two levels to disk formatting:
    Disk-level
    Partition-level
Disk-level, which defines how "partitions" are organized.  There are two disk-level formats you need to be aware of for Mac:
MBR (Master Boot Record), which is used by Windows systems.  This is the one you most likely have on your existing disk.
    GUID is used by Mac.
Your MBR disk can be left at MBR, in my opinion.  It is likely at least 2 years old, and any backup disks you buy for Mac-backups should be new, in my opinion.
Within a disk, there are "partitions", with different formats:
Windows uses a method called NTFS.  It has in the past used FAT, FAT32, but both are replaced by NTFS for most systems now.
    Mac uses HFS+
Microsoft has a patent on NTFS and only grudgingly allows other computers to even read the disks.  Technically anyone could red it, but Microsoft may at anytime pull the plug and sue any "entity" or operating that tries to read it.
    My suggestion is this:
Buy new disks for backing up your new Mac system.  Make them self-powered, already formated for Mac.  Buy new snice backups need to be on reliable hardware.
Also buy new disks for keeping "files only" directories for your new "mac-world".
Use your old disk to move files off as needed, but it is now a "secondary" disk used to read old files.

  • Com.apple.Preview and mf_refimg folders in trash (recovered files) lately

    Hi,
Lately I am seeing a recovered files folder in the trash with a bunch of Preview folders titled "com.apple.Preview8909_2118585411 " and the like and also some titled "mf_refimg.29" and the like. All have pictures in them. The Preview folder has a bunch, if not all of the pics I've looked at with Preview lately (maybe yesterday's batch from the camera) and the mf_refimg folders have a graphic I used with Disc Cover, a CD/DVD cover app. Disc Cover is working fine as is Preview. No strange behavior noted in either app other than the OS thinking that Preview still has a pic open after I have closed that pic, which has been a sporadic Preview bug for awhile. All the pics appear to be copies of pics that are happily in the folders they started out in, elsewhere on my computer.
Why is it doing this? I have recently checked the drive using Disk Utility from my install CDs and nothing has been found to be wrong. I had a kernal panic a few days ago but Disk Utility has checked things since and found nothing wrong. (The kernal panic was due to my trying to startup from an external Firewire drive that had 10.4.8 on it. That disk has since been erased and reformatted with no system on it, just the driver so it will appear on my desktop when connected. I haven't used that drive since checking my Powerbook disk with Disk Utility.)
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers,

Just to add a bit to what Malcolm said--many programs keep temporary files. In Preview's case you'll notice that there is a "Revert" item in the File menu, so if you make changes and then change your mind it can recover the the original. The temp files for Preview are stored in this hidden directory:
    "/private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems"
Programs are supposed to clean up after themselves when they quit, invisibly getting rid of their temp files, but some programs fail to do this. Preview USED to but no longer does (one of a number of things that got goofed up in Preview when they re-wrote it). When that happens the system itself will do the clean-up next time you restart, and place the temp files into the Recovered Items folder which it deposits in the Trash. Another Apple program that fails to delete its temp files when it quits is SoundTrack Pro (and its garbage can be very large files). Since programs are supposed to automatically get rid of this stuff, when they don't the system assumes the program crashed and that you might want the things back, so puts them in a folder in the Trash so you can sort through and decide if you need or can use them.
