Restored Library from vault- all previews now red question marks

I just restored my library of referenced images from my vault, and all of my image thumbnails are now showing up as red question marks in Aperture.
Is this normal? Will I need to let Aperture reconnect to my image storage drive and re-render previews
How do i get rid of the red question marks?

You'll have to reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Then install iPhoto, run the latest updater and try again.

  • Restore Library from Vault and projects empty

I have purchased Aperture 3.1.1 from the Mac App Store and then proceeded to import all of my photos by Restoring the Library from my Aperture Vault.
The Vault imported and of course Aperture asked me to update the database as the Vault was created in an earlier version of Aperture 3.
Now, in Aperture I can see all of my folders, projects and albums. However, each project, folder or album indicates that there are 0 objects and also there are no generated thumbnails.
They are obviously in the Vault and now the Library because both files are over 36Gb in file size.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
    Thank you.

Welcome to the list. Make sure you read the [Help & Terms of Use|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa] section when you get a chance.
Just to be clear in the first paragraph you mention restoring the vault and in the second you mentioned importing. You did use the Aperture vault command *Restore Vault* ?

  • Restore Library From Vault Issue

    Hello,
HD in my Macbook pro died and I just replaced it -- I updated all of the data using time machine, however, I had a library of photos on Aperture that were much newer than my most recent TimeMachine backup and so I'd like to simply restore my Library from the vault.  I have tried the following:
I connected the hard disk drive that contains the most up-to-date vault to my computer and opened Aperture.
I chose File > Vault > Restore Library. The Restore Library dialog appeared.
I chose Select Source Vault from the Source Vault pop-up menu.
I navigated to the vault from which I want to restore, then I clicked Select.
    I clicked Restore
The only problem is that after I complete step 5, nothing happens-- the dialog box closes and there is no indication that Aperture is restoring anything.
    Am I doing something wrong?
Aperture 3.2.3, Snow Leopard and 17" Macbook pro from 2007

The photos are managed in the Aperture Library, that is to say they are not referenced. Aperture's library is located on the MacBook Pro internal HD. I use 3 Western Digital 500 GB USB-2 drives to vault Aperture's Library. One is kept in a safety deposit box (red), but it has not been updated in a few months. The other two drives are kept in my home. One is used on a weekly basis (black), while the other is updated monthly (blue). I restored from the blue drive, but I could try the black drive to see if it is affected also. It just takes several hours to restore from these drives and my confidence with the vault protection of my photos is shaken. My photo library is about 400 GB in size.
The problem is confined to recent projects that were probably just added to the vault prior to wiping the internal drive. I made a smart album to find all photos with missing files and the result is 320 photos affected. Most of those are from a single wedding project of 600 photos.

  • Restoring Aperture Library from Vault

    Hi all,
I hope someone can help.  I recently had my 'Drobo' die on me as two discs failed at the same time.  I also have a copy of my Aperture Library backed up in a Vault.  I have carried out a 'Restore from Vault' and my new  external HD shows 1.5TB of data (same as my original library).  When I open Aperture, I can see all my folders and projects, but each project has no photos in it.  I have tried repairing the database and rebuilding the database using the option key on start up, but I repeatedly get to approx 83-89% complete and my system hangs and I get a message that I have run out of applications memory.  I then get the Spinning wheel and eventually have to reboot the iMac.
    1. How can I recover my data?
    2. Is there anything else I can/should do? Am I doing anything wrong?
    3. Is there anyway of recvering the files seperately of the external hard drive with other data recovery software?
I am running Aperture the most uptodate version of Aperture 3.4.x, on OS X Mavericks, on a 3.4GHz i7 iMac with 12GB ram.
One point I may need to add, I was backing up to Vault when my 'Drobo' unit failed, although based on the size of the vault, I think it had finished backing up, although can not be certain.
Any help/assistance or advice would be greatfully received as I have lost my library, its parity due to two failed drives simultaneously and possibly a corrupt vault(?).
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Paul W

Will rebuilding the library place the images into their correct projects/folders?
Will rebuilding return the images to their edited version state?
This library is the restored library from your vault, correct?
What seems to be missing are all of the 'version' images processed in Aperture.
In what way "missing"? Are all your projects empty or are you seeing broken thumbnails of the missing images in the projects?
I am afraid, rebuilding will not be able to reconnect the "recovered" originals to the versions. The images are in the "Recovered" project, because Aperture does not know the link to the version.
If your missing versions are still showing thumbnails, however correpted, you could use the lift&stamp tool to transfer the adjustments from the unusuable versions to the recovered versions.
But that would be a bit daunting for 14000 recovered originals.
I'd try something different - quick and dirty emergency measure: Try to open your vault directly on the drive where it is now without restoring it.
Keep the restored library you are now having save and don't delete it.
Change the filename extension of your vault to ".aplibrary", this will turn the vault into an Aperture library and try to open it directly in Aperture by double clicking it. This needs to be done in-place, on the Drobo-attached drive where you originally created the vault. Do not move it.
Aperture will now try to open the vault as the current Aperture library and upgrade it. There is a slim chance, that the links between originals and versions will remain intact, if the vault is not restored to a different volume but repaired in-place on the original volume.
Frank, what do you think? Should Snurge first try to repair the permissions on the drive?

  • I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.
    regards  - Alan

  • Music wont sync on my new iphone 4s. Restored it from a backup and now there's no music on it. In the music tab it says: Thomas iPhone has access to music on iCloud. Songs can be fetched via WIFI or a mobile network. What to do?

Restored it from a backup and now there's no music on it. In the music tab it iTunes says: Thomas iPhone has access to music on iCloud. Songs can be fetched via WIFI or a mobile network. The pnly thing I can chose to sync are voice memos.
    What can I do?

If you want all the songs from an artist on your phone you can to to the artist view, tap on the artist, scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see a Download All button.  This works for playlists and albums too (scroll to the bottom and tap the Download All button).  I suppose if you wanted all your music on your phone you could create a smart playlist in iTunes on your computer that would contain all your music, upload it to iTunes match (Store>Update iTunes Match), and then you would get a Download All button at the bottom of this playlist on your phone to download all your songs.

  • "Missing Files" Red Question Marks, can't delete Crashes

    HELP!
I recently had some external drive issues, so once I got every thing copied back over and relinked, the Managed Referenced Files Section still shows some missing images and I I make a Smart album and sort it by Missing files, they show up as RED Question Marks. Glad to help!
Another good thing to do from time to time is to boot from your install CD, then choose "Disk Utility", then do a check (and repair, if necessary) of your boot disk.
You can't verify or fix a disk you've started from, thus the need to boot from a CD. You can boot from a second hard disk to do this test if it has MacOS on it.

In Lion, there is no Systim Profiler. It is System Information now located in the Utilities Folder. Open that up and select to keep it in the Dock.
Drag the icon for system profiler off the Dock.

  • Restore library from backup in iPhoto '09

I am running iPhoto '09 (v.8.1.2) on a 2006 iMac. I installed OSX (v.10.5.8) in early 2010. A few backups were performed before it started crashing while trying to backup. I am not able to upgrade at all due to hard drive constraints spacewise, so I have to work within the versions I have.
The hard drive has been diagnosed as dying and needs to be replaced. I've put it off due to financial reasons.
Meanwhile, I had moved my photo library to external HD #1 to free up space on the iMac HD.
The few backups that worked were sent to external HD #2.
    External HD #1 has died.
I can see that there is a photo library in my backup from last March, but need to know how to restore it.
I tried a solution I found (close iPhoto, in Finder, open the folder with the current library, enter time machine, choose a backup, and find the library and click restore), but I was not able to click restore - it wasn't an option.
Right now, I have another photo library that I use when I open iPhoto. It's on the same external HD as the backup. Is this a problem?
I have a new external HD that I haven't connected yet - if I need to employ it for this process, I can do that.
I know that there are special steps to do this, but with such old versions of everything, it's hard to find an answer that applies.
Thanks so much for any help...

Right now, I have another photo library that I use when I open iPhoto. It's on the same external HD as the backup. Is this a problem?
Yes. It means you have no back up. If this disk goes down you lose everything.
As for the Time machine issue, post that on the 10.5 forum. Some one there might be able to help you out.
What I meant was, is it a problem to restore with a library from the same disk. I realize that I have no backup - that's why I'm installing a new one today.
I will check out the Time machine forums about restoring.
    Thank you.

  • Restore library from network user's home on Time Machine backup

Anyone know how to restore ONLY an individual user home Library or items inside a specific user's Library from a Time Machine backup?
Our 10.10.1 Server 4.0.3 server has its data including Network Userhomes backed up to Time Machine. Due to the keychain and preference issues that still plague us, we periodically need to restore a single user's Library or parts of the Library such as Preference folder. With Apple hiding the Library in general, you cannot see the Library for the users in the back up. As a result we are forced to restore the entire User home for the user in question to fix a single or several files that have become corrupted. With email etc. some user homes are pretty large and that process, as a result, can take quite some time when compared to replacing a single corrupt file with the one that worked yesterday.
    Thanks

Thanks Linc. I was trying to navigate to it in Time Machine which has it hidden as usual.
Using Finder > Go > Go to folder > /Volumes/Drive/Userhomeslocation/User/Library I was able to get the folder and then went to Time Machine as Linc suggested.
Linc do you know of a way to show all Network User Libraries on the server without showing all invisible files?

  • Restore library from Ipod to virgin pc?

I just paid $300 for my first ipod. Loaded it from my desktop after scanning lots of CDs.
I want to replicate the library on my laptop and manage it from there. I installed iTunes, but when I connect the ipod, the options seem to suggest it wants to erase the contents, not upload them.
What did I miss? How do I tell iTunes to work in reverse?

    No backup of your HD?
    Yes  it is possible.

  • Booting system from an external drive; Folder with Question Mark

Hello all. I am trying to setup an external USB hard drive as a bootable device for my Tiger install. This is on a Core Duo Mac Mini. I have successfully partitioned it using GUID into two partitions; A small 5gb partition for the minimal OSX install, and the remainder for data. I installed OSX onto it via my included Tiger discs that came with the Mini, no problems. However, when I try to boot from it I get a Folder icon with a question mark in the center. I can boot the Mini normally and browse the external partition. It shows no problems. Disk Utility also shows no errors on the drive. What have I missed?
For any who are curious, my goal here is to use NetRestore to make a backup image of my main Mini hard disk. Then by booting to the external USB drive, I will be able to restore the backup image (stored on the data partition of the external drive as well) to the internal Mini hard disk.
Mac Mini Core Dio Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just letting everyone know that I am still unresolved on this one. I have tried it all; Zero-overwrite erased the external drive before partitioning it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the boot disk, you name it. Every situation leads to the same result; no ability to boot from the USB drive, It just acts like it can't read it. Are there "undocumented" problems booting from USB on Intel macs?

  • OS X Insall crashed halfway. Now getting question mark folder on startup

I was in the process of wiping my wife's old MacBook so that I could give it to my daughter. I inserted my Tiger install disc and proceeded to erase and install (didn't need wife's old data and I wanted the system to be fresh). Unfortunately, the process froze-up halfway and now I cannot start the MacBook. I get the flashing question mark folder.
I tried repeating the process again, but when the install process begins, it scans the CD for file integrity. When it does this, it says that there's a problem and that the disc needs to be cleaned. I've cleaned it to the point of being able to eat off it, but it's still not working.
The CD drive in the machine has always been flaky so I'm wondering if it's the drive rather than the disc. Is there a way to install OS X from a firewire drive or another mac tethered to the MacBook? I have a Powerbook, an iMac and a LaCie firewire drive that I could use.
    Thanks for any help!
    .g

Sure, use either Mac... but it all depends if your old MacBook will boot into Firewire target disk mode.
If it does just pop in the DVD (in the good DVD drive) and install. I'd suggest a reformat also, under the circumstances.
To use FireWire target disk mode
    1. Make sure that the target computer is turned off. If you are using a PowerBook or iBook as the target computer, you should also plug in its AC power adapter.
    2. Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer does not need to be turned off.
    3. Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Then restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
    4. When you are finished copying files, drag the target computer's hard disk icon to the Trash or select Put Away from the File menu (Mac OS 9) or Eject from the File menu (Mac OS X).
    5. Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
    6. Unplug the FireWire cable.
If the target computer's hard disk does not become available to the host computer, check the cable connections and restart the host computer.
