Restored Using time machine, now I have no check boxes.

So my hard drive deceided to stop working not too long ago, so I got a new one and booted from a time machine back up. After the restore, oddly enough, I do not see check boxes anywhere. Whether it is on a website, or on a system preference page, if there is an option with a check box next to it, it does not appear for me. However, I can still select these checkboxes (assuming of course that I am in the right spot while clicking at essentially nothing).  In addition to this craziness, if I click on my volume option in the toolbar on the top, I see an empty box where the volume selection meter used to be. I can still change the volume by clicking somewhere in the empty rectangle, but the problem is that I do not see anything. Not only that, but I also noticed that my keyboard will no longer allow me to adjust the volume or the brightness.
One other weird thing is that everytime I try to do a new back up in time machine, it lags out and fails. So there is a lot of weirdness happening, and all of this happened after I restored. I tried marking this post as a question, but I'm not sure if that was successful (you have click on a checkbox for that). Please help.

You posted your question in the OS 9 & below forum, so you won't get an answer here. You need to repost in the Snow Leopard OS 10.6 forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard

Use Migration Assistant on your new Mac:
    Click Continue:
On the next screen, choose your Time Machine backup disk.
Don't bother to migrate Applications unless you know they will work on your new Mac. For example, PowerPC applications won't work. Just migrate your user account which will copy all your photos, music, movies, and other documents.
Note: you will not be able to migrate the information to same account in which you are already logged in. Migration Assistant will tell you that and recommend what to do. It can migrate the information to a new account, but you will have to give it a name you might want to change later. One way around this is to create a temporary account, log in to it, and run Migration Assistant which will replace your normal account. Then, log out of the temporary account, log in to your usual one, verify everyting works as you expect, and delete the temporary one.
All this can be avoided when you set up a brand new Mac by running Setup Assistant which essentially does the same thing to create your new account, but most people are too excited to do that and elect to migrate later.

    Hello jfilbey,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

to see the drive again so i can retrive my files
I don't know what drive failed.
I'm thinking here your internal drive failed? Was it replaced?
You have a blank internal drive and a TimeMachine drive and your asking how to reinstall OS X so you can restore from the TimeMachine drive?
How are you getting here? Another machine or device and what is it?
We need more details of your situation please.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library.  I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

after lion 10.7.3 update messed my mac had to restore from time machine now Outlook won't connect with microsoft exchange, any idea?

I've had a similar problem.  On my first boot up after installing 10.7.4,  Firefox would not open.  Crashed every time.  Safari was not affected.  I have no idea if it was related to the flash plugin, but I did install a the latest version of that a couple of weeks ago.
Here's what fixed it: a second boot up.

Do you have a few words missing in the original question ?.
When i upgraded from LION to MOUNTAIN LION it made NO difference at all to my MyBook Live !!!

  • HT201250 Can I back up using Time Machine if I have some files already on the ExHD, or do I need a clean ExHD to use Time Machine?

Can I back up using Time Machine if I have some files already on the ExHD, or do I need a clean ExHD to use Time Machine?

If you try to use a new disk with time machine, it will try to reformat your EXHD. so I would save the items on your EXHD before backing up with time machine or partitioning your EXHD in disk utility

  • An old macbook running 10.6.8 was restored using Time Machine then Snow Leopard was reinstalled and updated to 10.6.8. Now the machine is slow and repair disc permissions results in a cancelled by user message.

Our old macbook was getting a gray screen with flashing ? on bootup. Eventually I restored it using Time Machine then decided to reinstall Snow Leopard since it would not boot. Machine now boots but is slow. Ran repair disc and tried to run repair disc permissions but got a message that it was cancelled by user.
This machine is at least 6 years old and I just want to limp it along until I can afford to replace it in the spring.

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS.  I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before.  I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure.  Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

  • Restored from Time Machine - Now have two separate users account

    Hello,
I was having problems with Leopard, so Apple support told me to do an erase and install and then restore all my data from time machine. After restoring from time machine, I was asked whether I wanted to merge my user accounts (considering that they have the same name) or create separate accounts. However, the option to merge them could not be selected. So, I created a separate account and simply kept the same name for my Time Machine account but added the #1 on the end to distinguish it.
Now I would like to merge the accounts, or delete one of the accounts while still retaining all of my data (from Time Machine). How can I go about doing this?
    Thanks.

Log into your restored account. Be sure it has admin authority. Delete the account you created during reinstallation.

  • I can't use Time Machine now that I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite

Ever since I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite, I have not been able to use Time Machine to backup my hard drive.  When I back up using my wireless network, the connection is dropped at some point in the backup process.  I tried a direct connection to the Time Capsule and got a blinking yellow light on the Time Capsule.  What can I do to rectify this situation (other than buying a knew Time Capsule)?

I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.
But have you run the the iPhoto Library upgrader? It is installed in Applications > Utilities. Launch it and direct it to your iPhoto library.
Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?
The upgrader is only necessary, if you have been  running iPhoto7.1.2 or earlier.

  • Restored from Time Machine now some songs in itunes not authorised to sync

I started using Time Machine recently (2 to 3 weeks ago). Everything was working before, including my iTunes library. No authorisation issues, no syncing issues to my iphone or ipad. Last night I did a full restore from Time Machine backup and now I get authorisation warnings on some old songs in my itunes library, telling they will not sync to my iphone. The Apple ID it's using is an old one and I no longer have access to the email address. If there weren't any problems before the backup how can there be after the restore. Shouldn't the backup be an exact copy of the HD?

I did the restore from the most recent backup in Time Machine after booting from the Snow Leopard install cd. (The reason I needed to restore is because I was planning on selling the computer but then changed my mind. Stupid, I know).
The thing is, everything worked without any problems before I started using Time Machine.

  • Migration assistant and time machine: now I have two profiles

    Hi all!
I wasn't able to do what I was hoping to (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2791592&stqc=true) since I had the wrong torx screwdriver (by the way if anybody knows the size...), so i restored my data from time machine.
After that i was logged in in the profile I created when I first booted the mbp. I was able to see all the application restored from time machine but not the data. Under users, there were the new profile and the one I used to have before (and that was on time machine). To access "old" data I had to log in in the old profile.
    My questions are:
    - Should I eliminate (and is it safe to do so) the new profile created on the new mbp and keep only the old one imported from time machine? Will this save space/increase performance?
    - Is there any risk to loose something that was by default on the new macbook pro (programs etc)?Actually using the old profile averything seems the same as in the old mb, even desktop settings etc.
-I ran geekbench just after booting the mb and I scored around 6000 and 5800 (don't have details here now). After importing data I was between 5400 and 5600...why?
    thankyou all

    keep the blank user account.
you can use it in case you have a problem on your normal user account. by checking the problem on the blank user, you can see whether it originates from a user file or from deeper down your system.

  • How can I choose the volume which I want to restore by Time Machine? I have two volumes.

Does anyone know how to restore one of two volumes from Time Machine?
I have been using SSD and HDD on my MBP.Today, I replaced an old HDD to a new HDD and tried to restore from Time Machine.
Unfortunately, Migration Assistant couldn't choose which volume I want to restore.
On Time Machine, I could choose the location, but it was just a copy, not a restore.
Some files address has been changed, so I have to correct the location for every apps on SSD.
    For example, "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/" has changed to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD//Macintosh HD/Users/"
I want to make a new HDD be exactlly same as an old HDD, so I don't need to adjust file locations or rename the address.
    Thank you in advance.

In SCORM-compliant LMSs the "mechanism" for transferring interaction data is via JavaScript variables.  SCORM uses a standard JavaScript API that all compliant LMSs are supposed to understand and interpret correctly.  (I use the words "supposed to" because the reality tends to be that they all interpret the standard a little differently.)
If this is a "locally developed LMS" then all bets are off.  You should in theory be able to transfer quite a bit of information, but with a home-grown roll-your-own system at the other end, you have no way of knowing how it will handle that information.
You need to talk to whoever built or is currently in charge of this LMS, hopefully someone with technical knowledge and expertise.  Get them to tell you how much of the SCORM standard is actually supported.  Only then will you know if you can use some more advanced Captivate functionality to pass more scoring information (e.g. interaction data as well as score/pass/fail).
If your current LMS is truly only able to accept a couple of values, and your customer wants more than this, handball the issue back to them.  They'll either have to upgrade their LMS or revise their requirements.

  • If I restore using Time Machine, will I restore permissions also?

Here is the deal. We have a MacPro and I would like to use Time Machine to backup the computer, then wipe the hard drive and the restore only the software and media. What we DO NOT WANT is for any of the problems (like the permissions that are messed up) to be restored also. When  I say permissions I mean in our office  we have to hold shift to start up in safe mode, then restart, plus other stuff . I really don't want to get into all that. Please tell me if problems will be restored as well, after the use of Time Machine, cause that's what we want to avoid.
    Speak slowly and clearly please.
    MacPro Version 10.6.8
    2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
I'm not sure of the year (let me know if it matters in this case)

Is there anyway to avoid that.
    No.
How can I, "exclude from the backup?"
Apple menu > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options...
So using Time Machine, in my case, is a waste of time?
Not necessarily. You could restore from a snapshot taken before the damage was done. In that case, you lose all more recent changes to your files, but you could restore those selectively.
Also would upgrading to Mountain Lion solve this issue?
I'm not sure what the issue is, so I don't know.
Is the way to restore the OS to default, but leave all new media and new software in place?
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and select Reinstall OS X. Don't expect that action to solve any problem other than corrupt or missing system files, which are relatively rare.
