Restoring a 10.3 address book to 10.5

My old imac which was running 10.3 died. I had a full backup of everything, and I now have a new imac running 10.5. When I restore the files for the address book, the 10.5 address book doesn't read the old address book - 10.3 had a file called addressbook.data, 10.5 seems to have a file called AddressBook-v22.abcddb which is the only file in the library/application support/address book directory that changes. Any hints on how to get my addresses back?
Thanks!

Hi Tom, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Looks like you got lost in the shuffle...
Have you tried importing them?

  • How do I restore my settings in Address Book, iPhoto, iCal etc?

    Hi,
I've just reinstalled Leopard on my MacBook and backed up using Time Machine to my external Lacie HD before I did this.
I want to restore my settings in Address Book, iPhoto, iCal etc. I have tried using Migration Assistant to restore my settings but it stopped saying "1 minute left" and after 24 hours was still saying the same thing.
I open up Address Book, iPhoto, iCal etc. but my original address details, photos etc. aren't there. Am I supposed to use Migration Assistant to restore Applications?
Is there a way around this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Phil

i forgot to mention that you should also try running the "repair permissions" from "disk utility" in the applications/utility directory whenever you copy back directories or files that you didn't directly create but that may have been created by a program. that is because the programs that create the directories/files in the first place sometimes will give the files a different set of permission that what the files will get when you copy them. so after you copy files back from another locations some files may not end up with the correct permissions when copied with the finder.

  • Restore entire Mail and Address Book files

    Hi,
I reformatted my computer (erase and reinstall) to clear out all the clutter. I figured I could use the Time Machine records to restore whatever files I needed. I have encountered 2 problems:
I have consulted this Apple article for assistance: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301239
    1) Mail: When copying the Time Machine files for Apple Mail (the mail folder and com.apple.mail.plist files) back onto my user accounts a strange things happens. For my admin accounts, the transfer worked fine; however, for my managed accounts when I copy over their respective files and open mail it prompts me as if mail had been opened for the first time (asking for email address, user name, etc...) Are there different files to copy because they are not admins?
    2) Address Book: The apple article states to backup address book through the file -> backup, etc... method. I only have my entire Mac HD files on my Time Machine, what files do I copy back to restore my address book? I noticed their are several located in preferences, application support, and more, but I do not know which ones to copy back.
    Thank you,
    TM

    1) Have you restored the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file for each user?
    2) I think you need to copy the *~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook* folder. Also, I have ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist as well as com.apple.AddressBook.adb.plist (in the same folder). I'm not sure what that latter file is for, but if you have both too, you should probably restore them both.

  • How to restore mail messages and address book?

Recently the hard drive on my eMac failed. The drive would no longer mount. Fortunately, my entire user folder has been recovered. While I see the files such as AddressBook.data and Incoming_Mail they are showing up as generic documents. I can't seem to import these files or open them with their respective applications (Address Book and Mail). How can I restore these previous messages and prior address book? I want to add this recovered data to the new address book and mailboxes that I have created in the interim after the hard drive crashed and I began using another Mac.
    17" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

the new version of Mail is not recognizing the mbox files and therefore I can't import them.
Again, this is wrong. Not only does Mail 2.x recognize Mail 1.x mailboxes, but can import them as either Mail for Mac OS X or as Other. The exact procedure is slightly different in each case.
I need a way to bring these old mbox message files into Tiger.
And I need that you explain what exactly it is that you’re doing and what exactly is the problem in order to be able to determine what exactly it is that you’re doing wrong...

  • I restored contacts in the address book

i restored contacts from time machine for my address book. my restored contacts show up correctly in the "last import" section. my "all contacts" i want to delete and replace them with the restored contacts. do i delete all the "all contacts" and then make the "last import" take their place?

How did you do that? See the yellow box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you did something else, that's probably why you're seeing what you are.

That will probably work; if not, use the procedure in #15.

  • How do I restore my E-mail address book to 10.30 am this morning?

I delated one section of the address book

I am sorry to hear about losing data :(
Unless you had previous backups, you can't restore past data. Ask whoever installed / maintains your system about this.
This [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb knowledgebase article will tell you more about how information is stored in Thunderbird profiles, and also how to backup and restore them] in the future.

  • Restore a user's Address Book on Lion Server with TimeMachine available

Has anybody found the solution to restore a single user's Address Book on Lion Server with TimeMachine available

I recently needed to restore an older version (by a few hours) of my AddressBook DB (on Lion Client) and Time Machine simply kept crashing!  Finally, what I had to do to get it going was to quit AddressBook, delete the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook, and then open that folder within Time Machine (via Finder), so as to only restore (an older version of) the "MetaData" folder within (and nothing else).
    Hope this helps.

  • Restore entire Address Book from Time Machine?

Mac Mid 2011, OSX Lion 10.7.5, Time Machine
After enabling iCloud my address book got "replaced" with an outdated version.  Time machine allows me to update individual records but I want to
replace the entire Address Book.   Can this be done and if so then how?  Thank you.
    Dan from New York

    I SOLVED this problem:
    1.  Selected ALL entries from my current (outdated) address book, then deleted them.
    2.  Selected ALL entries from a good version in Time Machine, then restored.
    3.  Address book updated.
Piece of cake..I made this issue more complicated than it needed to be...all is well.

  • Address book sync that doesn't sync all

After having read a lot of post and message about possible cause on partial sync on address book contact, in particular this topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6696772&)
I leave the recipe that has worked for me. In my case I have a mac with good result, iphone with the same results, but something changed on them (like person to company) and some entry that suddenly disappeared during last sync.
    1) adjust and backup your mac address book
    2) delete mac address book at all
    3) sync with the iphone (your contact will get back) wrong (most of them)
    4) restore the backup. Address book says that your data will be replaced. I tried and magically the data missing was left there, the dup one was replaced by the right backed up copy.
    5) sync again with iphone
    6) do some test. I deleted an unusefull entry on mac and synced again. It worked fine.

I would sign out again, then update your Mac (latest version, not 10.7.3 as shown in your signature), open "Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and then choose iCloud and sign in again. I would also do the same on your iOS device (sign out and in). Make sure to confirm the message when you will be asked to merge the contacts with iCloud.

  • Can I put Mail and Address book from my backed up dead Mac to my new one

My powerpc G5 Imac just died. It was completely backed up to Mozy, and I would like to restore my Mail and Address book from that machine on the new Snow Leopard machine I bought today. Is that possible?

if you are completely backed up then yes. copy the following items from the old computer to the corresponding locations on the new computer
    /users/yourusername/library/mail (copy the whole folder)
    /users/yourusername/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
/users/yourusername/library/application support/address book (copy the whole folder).
star Mail and address book and they should look as they did on the old computer.

  • Syncing Address Book to IPod Classic

Problem: Syncing Address Book to my iPod Classic 80 (using iMac, bought new Dec. 2007)
I have tried again and again to sync my Address Book to the iPod; with always the same weird results.
    1. When I sync my iPod to the Address Book, only seven contacts of 166 appear on the iPod - THIS is the problem.
    2. On the iTunes Contacts page I have checked; ‘Sync Address Book’ and ‘All Contacts’.
    3. During syncing the window states that it is syncing contacts.
    4. In the list of ‘Selected Groups’ (I always have ‘All Contacts’ checked) groups appear that I have deleted in Address Book.
    5. I used Bento in the past, and didn’t like it; I have moved Bento from the application folder to the Trash. Could Bento be interfering somehow?
    6. On Preferences I have tried vCard 3.1 and 2.0, neither worked - 3.1 is currently selected.
    7. In Address Book, I did an archive backup. And then restored with the archive, no difference, with the sync. The restore worked fine in Address Book.
    8. As a test, in Address Book I deleted one of the seven contacts, that do appear on the iPod (see 1. above); then synced; it still appears on my iPod - the contact that won’t die.
    9. Syncing of Calendars works fine.
    10. I have tried resetting the iPod. Still no difference after syncing, still only seven contacts appear, including the deleted one.
    11. Where is the data for the Address Book stored on the computer? If I deleted all the data files in Address Book, would that help? Would the files rebuild themselves with the restore archive?
    12. The iPod software is up to date.
    13. Resetting the iPod did not change anything.
    14. I did the sync manually - syncing only Contacts, still only seven contacts.
What can I do? Any ideas would be appreciated. Using the iPod for contacts would very useful - I really do not want to buy another device or a cell phone (PDA) that also stores addresses.
    Thanks, Diane

OK - Now we have some progress. I did as suggested and 'Reset Sync History', The seven contacts on the iPod are gone! However, it still is not syncing up my contacts. I reset the iPod, tried manually, restarted the computer, etc. - it didn't help. Thank you for the suggestion.
    Thank You, Diane

  • "Address Book (not installed)" in Organizer

I updated both my device software (5.0.0.973) and my desktop software (6.0.0.43) this morning.  After updating, when trying to sync to Outlook 2007 after that to the address book, it gave me a 0x80040fb3 error and wouldn't do any more synching.  I tried to delete the pictures and the problem contacts in Outlook.  Same thing happened after that.  Then I tried deleting the data in the Address Book and restoring it from backup.  Now it states in the Organizer screen of the BBDS that  "Address Book (not installed)".  I attempted to go to setup and click on the box to enable synching, but it won't save my selection.  My address on the device has been messed up ever since the original upgrade.  It only says one name and doesn't give me any options.  I might have messed this up when attempting to delete files.  Don't know.  Anyone know how to restore functionality to my address book?
The above error occurred one time with Tasks synching and one time with Calendar synching.  Tried to delete all problem entries.

I am running 6.0.0.43 desktop manager.  I downgraded the device software, not the desktop manager software.  What I did was either click on the "Update My Device" button in Desktop Manager or close out of Desktop Manager and do the device update online.
I believe both will get you to the same place and will eventually give you a screen where a button reads "View Other Versions".  Click on that button.  It will then show your current version and other versions which you can downgrade to.  Select the one you want and let it do its thing.  Make sure everything you currently have is backed up, because you will want to do a restore.

  • Delete address book

I accidently sync'd 8000 work contacts with my iphone.  I don't want 8000 contacts on my iphone.  How do I start over?  Deleting the Address Book Cards one-by-one on my iMac is driving me insane.  Any way to delete the entire Address Book dbase?
Or can someone take me thru a Time Machine restore of just the Address Book from a couple days ago?
iMac running latest version of Lion
    Iphone 4s
    Thanks!

The entire address book database is located in your invisible (use the free TinkerTool)
I don't quite know what will happen if any of these files were deleted or removed from the folder, likely addressbook would recreate the data files with no entires.
test with care, if it doesn't work then replace them
I wouldn't leave invisble items visible, use Tinkertool to set all those files invisible again.

  • How do I import existing contract with just "Address Book" folder?

I did a clean install of Leopard, and now my Tiger backup is unbootable. I do have access to the files, though. I need to get my contacts from my address book from my Tiger backup. I can't seem to get the Leopard Address Book to recognize any contacts from the old ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder on my backup.
How do I accomplish getting my old contacts to my new install?

I figured it out. I took the ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder from my old Tiger backup and placed that in my new Leopard /Library/Application Support/ while temporarily renaming the original. Opening up Address Book from there then opened up my old contacts. I then did an export.
After that, I deleted the old ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder from my Tiger backup I put in my Leopard system, and restored my original Leopard /Address Book/ folder.
Then, I just imported the export I did from the old data.
    Tada.....it worked.

  • Address Book Contacts Disappeared

On my home computer. And what really makes me mad is that when I do an "advanced" iSync to have .Mac data put on the home computer I still have no contacts. So, plan B. I backup using Apple's Backup program every Sunday. So, I try to restore from last Sunday's backup. I try to restore user>application support>address book. It acts like it is going to work, but when it is done, I still have no contacts. All I can say is that I am disappointed and I better have everything on my office computer when I get there Monday. What am I doing wrong?

What size are the various files in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook?
