Restoring a 30gig.

HEy everyone, here's my question to all of you. I im having trouble restoring my ipod. When i turn it on i get the message "Please connect to computer. Please restore with iTunes." in 4 different languages. This is fine, i eventually got it to read and completly restored my ipod. However i am now receiving the excat same message and then getting an error message about "downloading the software for the update" when i try to restore it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem here, but I am restoring 211.73 GB. It has been going for about 36 hours and claims that it has 52 hours to go. Egad.
I've got the computer connected to the TC via ethernet and the restore is going into a USB 2.0-connected external drive, so the bottleneck should not be in the capacity of those connections. Nothing very CPU intensive is happening on the machine.
Is there some faster way to do this? I'd happily plug a USB drive right into the TC and copy the data off that way – is there some way to do that?

  • How do I get my 30gig Ipod Vid to get out of restore mode?

Long story short is that I somehow fried my hd. I put a new one it, it worked perfect. As soon as I connected it to my laptop it restored it and voila, I was off and running. I then tried to use my headphones and realized I forgot to plug in the head phone jack, so I opened it up and reconnected everything and put it back together. Now it doesn't work. It's stuck in restore/recovery mode. Both my laptop and desktop won't work. My desktop if rebooted will show the model number and everything for it and when it does the restore and then restarts the ipod it never finds it. I've tried all I can think of. What's my problem? I even replaced the HD cable.

  • New ipod 30gig, how do you restore from the i pod setup?

I just got a new black 30 gig ipod, when i plugged it in to update songs it did, when i plugged it in again to update more songs, it began to update songs i had previously updated, and now no songs are present on my ipod. this is very frustrating, now the ipod doesnt connect to itunes and the folder with exclamation point shows up after i unplug it from the computer. everytime Is there a difference between ipod setup and ipod updater, because i cant find ipod updater and ipod setup does not provide the restore button for me. what should i do guys!!!!?
    -mike

Yes, iPod setup and iPod Updater are different. One is an application (iPod Updater).
Was iPod Setup coming up every time you connected your iPod?
Either way, see if this helps...
First, make sure the software on your computer and iPod is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Update iPod's Software
    Try the steps listed here...
    Strange iPod Behavior
Also, take a look at these...
iPod shows a folder with exclamation point
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93736
See this to restore your iPod...
    Restore iPod
The iPod Updater is available under Start-->All Programs-->iPod-->iPod Updater 2006-06-28-->iPod Updater 2006-06-28
If the iPod Updater doesn't recognize your iPod, try putting it into Disk Mode first...
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
And then connect it to the computer and restore it.

  • Ipod works with USB 1.1, but not USB 2.0 (30GIG)

Has anyone had this issue? I plug my 30GIG iPod into a USB 2.0, and it says updating, do not disconnect for what seems like an eternity. Eventually, it pops up saying the ipod appears to be corrupted, restore to factory settings? I respond ok, and then it fails to restore. Tried multiple USB 2.0's, same thing.
Next, I pluged into my USB 1.1, and it pops up itunes (latest version) almost immediately, and shows the ipod, and allows me to xfer tunes immediately.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

I'm having a similar problem. I've tried reinstalling USB2.0 drivers, iTunes, iPod but cannot get it to work. It just shows up in the device manager as 'USB Mass storage device' with an exclaimation mark next to it. I've tried to update the drivers for the 'USB MAss storage device', however it just says that I've already got the most updated drivers for the device. I've succumbed to the 1.1 for now, but would really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this situation!

  • Songs not showing on 30gig iPod, but are showing on iTunes when attached

Hello. My iPod has about 5.25 gig of music, video and podcasts loaded. It was working fine. I connected it to my computer to charge and the next time I tried to use it, nothing is showing up on the iPod itself. However, when I reconnect it to my computer, the iPod shows up under Source and all of the playlists and songs are there. Also, when I go into Settings > About, it says Songs 0, Videos 0, Photos 0, Capacity 27.8 GB, Available 22.5 GB, Version 1.1.1, model MA146LL. Thanks for any help!

That backup only works if you have the files on the computer not on the ipod. You have the ability to take all the data off of your ipod but it will duplicate everything that is already in the library. To do this follow these steps:
This is what you will want to do, you will want to go into the tools menu in your windows explorer. Select folder options, click on the view tab. Once you are on the view tab, click on the folder that says hidden files and folders. On the hidden files and folders click show hidden files and folders. Then click ok on the folder options window. When you open the ipod now you will see the ipod control folder. In that folder there will be a music folder. Open that. There will be a number of folders that will begin with F00 you will want to go into the folder and you will see a bunch of song files with coded names. You will want to drag them to where it says library in itunes. The songs will automatically rename themselves to the correct name. Go through each one of the folders like this and your library will be restored.
The only thing that I would tell you is that this will duplicate all the songs in your library. So I would clear your entire library before you start this process

  • Ipod needs to be restored but not quite so simple

my ipod 30gig video said it was corrupt after a week or so of use, so i pressed the restore button in itunes as advised. i get all the warnings about losing all my data and such. i press ok and continue, it tells me its recovering it. then recovery is done and it says ipod restarting do not disconnect. simple enough, but after its restarted it tells me 'ipod is in recovery mode' and tells me i have to restore ipod before continueing... but i just did this. i've tried pressing restore again but this just seems to turn into a vicious circle of pressing restore, it telling me its restored, and then telling me i have to restore again. i'm using itunes 7.0

I had the same problem. I uninstall itunes 7.0 and downloaded the previous ipod installer before 7.0 and it worked perfectly. Just make sure you uninstall if you don't it will not let you install previuos versions.

  • Connect to your computer.Use Itunes to restore!

    Good Evening all,
I have the 30gig black video Ipod and I am having issues! All that its doing and nothing more is saying "Connect to your computer. Use Itunes to restore" Then it says the same thing in 3 other languages below. Hey that sound pretty simple but when I try and plug it in to my computer it says Do Not Disconnect in small writing. It was actually bigger earlier today. So I tried to run Ipod updater 2006-06-28 it just sits on the screen saying initializing... with absolutly no function. I tried the 5 r's to no avail. It seems I cant do a thing with it. Please help, someone!

  • Itunes cannot read contents of IPOD, please restore to factory settings...

And I'm pretty sure I've done it like... 10 times now.
This is starting to drive me nuts... Im not sure when exactly the problem started, but my IPOD (30gig video) has been working fine since I got up... Up until now. I Believe it was just after updating to the newest version of ITunes, but Im not 100% sure.
Since then, almost every time I plug my IPOD into my laptop, ITunes pops up with this message and asks me to Restore my IPOD using the IPOD Updater. The IPOD is recognized by Windows Explorer every time, and is always recognized by the IPOD Updater.
Every time I Restore it, and rename the IPOD, recopy all my music, etc... It works fine until I use the IPOD for some extended period of time... I've tested it just using it for a few minutes then plugging it back in and it tried to update my music fine, but If I use it for a few hours, the next time I go to plug it in, I get the same ITunes Cannot Read Contents of IPOD error.
I've done the Five R's numerous times, Reinstalled both ITunes and the IPOD Services numerous times... Everything shy of formatting the system to get this to work, but it just keeps happening...
What's also weird is that when I DO Restore it, and set it to Update My Library in ITunes, It says the IPOD is linked to another library and then I have set it to link to mine? Could this have anything to do with it? For the record I have not been switching computers with it or anything lately... so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it...
Anyone have any idea, or should I take out a Service Order?
    Please let me know,
    -Stef

I've got a brand new iPod Video 60Gb and i have had this message since the first time i synced it. I think i restored the iPod about 10 times but it's always crashing when i unlupg it. It try to listen to something, the musics are on the iPod but they aren't listed in playlists or under artists or songs.
Then i plug it to iTunes and i got the message: iTunes cannot read the content.
I've bought a Belkin card just for it, the one recommended for iPod USB 2.0. Doesn't change anything. I've tried different USB ports, again, nothing new.
I was just going to try using USB 1.0 but it's sooooooooooooo slow that it will take me like 12 hours to sync the iPod!
I don't know what to do now, as i can't find if it's a computer problem or an iPod problem...

  • Corruption and not restoring,

Have read several issues like this and have tried all suggested methods to no avail.
Video Ipod 30gig which contains a folder I use to carry uni work and other such stuff seems to be the problem [named Hard Drive]. The ipod on the move works fine. When plugged into a mac (at uni) I am told to format the ipod due to corrupt files, when in my p.c at home it works fine but the folder housing my work [hard drive] does not respond. I can click it, but I cannot open it, browse it, copy or delete it, after several mins of freezing it just ignores anything ever happened.
Both Mac and P.C itunes restore last forever, with no porgress being made after several hours.
Have managed to back up music and photos so restore only stands to lose some work and movies, which I can replace, I just cannot get it to restore.
    Many thanks.

I have exactly the same problem, I have sent it off to apple, they said it was working fine sent it back, I then conected it to my computer and it just says it is corrupted and will not restore?!?! Apple have let me down on this!

  • Receiving a "Restore" prompt upon connecting.

I currently have an iPod 30gig video. Recently I have ran into an issue when connecting my iPod to my computer. It prompts me to restore my iPod so that iTunes and the iPod can sync (at least I would assume that is what this is for). When I left on a trip a week ago I loaded up my iPod with fresh tunes and went on my way. When I returned home and attempted to connect my iPod to recharge / add more music, I was greeted with the prompt to restore.
On my trip my iPod was used once on an airplane flight, other than that it sat undisturbed in my bag. My computer also remained running (disconnected from the internet) but idle until my return. There is seemingly no explanation for why there is a "Restore" prompt greeting me every time I connect my iPod.
    1) Will Restoring my iPod erase the music / pictures I currently have on my iPod?
    2) Why did this happen?
    3) How can I prevent this from happening again?
Any help getting these questions answered would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
30gig, iPod Video.   Windows XP Pro   6 months old.

If your iPod is set to auto sync, then this link will provide you a way to still connect your iPod without having it erase everything. This will allow you to put it in manual mode so you can manually put your files where ever you want. I got this link from this forum, so it should work just fine. Be sure you follow the key combinations for the type of OS that you have either windows or mac.
You will have to be on your other machine now with iTunes installed. Also be sure to Authorize the new machine through iTunes.
By the way, if your iPod is NOT set up for auto sync, then you are already set to manually move your files and you don't even have to worry about the link provided.
I hope this works for ya man.

  • Restore error 1418

I think the iPod in question here is a 3g 30gig click wheel. It turns on and launches the iPod menu but there is no content. It wont mount on any desktop and iTunes tells me I need to do a restore. The restore starts but then stops and says an unknown error occured (1418).
Disk Utility will see the iPod as an Apple Computer volume and I have tried to format it (I even tried to zero all data) but it just stalls shortly into the progress bar.
Norton utilities freezes up when I try to launch Disk Doctor or Speed Disk when the iPod is pluged in.
What is wrong with this iPod? Thanks.

some folks have been having some success with the 1418s using eboncairn's technique:

  • Frozen Ipod, cant restore

My 30gig video Ipod was hooked into it's home computer when the power went out, keeping the "Do Not Disconnect" screen on the Ipod. I would restore it to its factory condition, however, the computer no longer regognizes the ipod for some reason. iTunes does not recognize it, and nor does it appear in "my computer", but whenever I try to use the ipod updater, the computer freezes. I don't know how to fix the iPod and would appreciate your help.

  • HELP says restore but itunes won't says ipod is busy and can't restore

My ipod 30gig 5th generation screen says connect to your computer, use itunes to restore. When I plug it in, it shows up in itunes and says, i tunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode, restore before it can continue, so I click restore and eventually it says, itunes cannot restore, ipod is busy. I have put the ipod in diagnostic mode and ran tests which turned out fine, i put it in forced disc mode and tried restoring it, and finally, i used disc utility, but whenever I go to erase my ipod disc utility freezes and i have to force quit! I've been looking at threads non-stop. can anyone help me!

I thought it might be an interference with the usb, so I took my mouse out (i'm on a laptop) tried different usb ports, reset it while it was connected to my laptop and when it was not. I think if I can get my disc utility to erase my ipod i might have a shot at restoring it but everytime I choose to erase my ipod on disc utility, the program freezes, is there an incompatibility that makes disc utility freeze (the program works, i verified some programs earlier on it)?

  • System Image Restore in Window 8.1

I have not been able to find a data migration application that works at cloning a Windows 8.1 hard drive to a new SSD.  With that in mind I want to go about moving the contents, data and operating system from my working C: to a new SSD.  I want
to go about it as if I have backed up my system, my C: drive has failed so I need to install a new drive and restore my data and operating system to the new drive.  I can't seem to find any simple (this should be simple) straight forward way to do this
nor can I find any form of written instruction on how to go about this.
I would love to have someone articulate this.  As it stands I have a fully operational intact C drive.  I have completed a disk image to a second separate hard drive.  I now want to restore that content to a third (SSD ) drive.
    Where do I begin?

There is a system backup tool called System Image Backup, follow these steps to conduct this:
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
Enter File History in the search box, tap or click File History, and then click System Image Backup at the left part.
See the screenshot as below, you can backup it on local machine or a DVD or a network share folder:
Besides, I need to point out that this backup method will generate a vhd file, if you want to restore the system you need an DVD installation midia.
You cannot just restore a vhd file directly to the hard drive.
