Restoring a 5th Gen 80gb

Now I have the problem with the using 2 iPods on the same computer sorted, in order to delete the content of my iPod to re upload it, I need to restore it so I have found out. Is this right?
I have checked that there are no updates that I need to do, I click restore, I get the standard 'your iPod will be restored to factory settings' etc etc etc the green KITT bar comes up telling me it is restoring and then I get an error message telling me it could not be restored due to an error 1418.
I've had a good look through the forums and this error 1418 seems to spell doom and gloom.
I know I am a bit of a tool when it comes to things like this so maybe I am missing something... can anyone tell me how my iPod can be restored so I can listen to MY music and not the Child's?
Many thanks in advance and apologies for the silly questions.

Have a read, see if it helps

  • Itunes playlists no longer showing up in my 5th Gen 80GB ipod

Ok, my ipod 5th Gen 80GB ipod works fine, all of my music is in there, and I can successfully sync with the latest version of itunes. The problem is: I can see my playlists in itunes on my laptop, I can sync my ipod successfully, but the playlists do not show up on my ipod. I have already tried resetting my ipod and restarting my computer.
    I'm stumped on this one

    Hello steelydan0613,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
How do you have your iPod set up to sync music? Manually or automatically? If you sync automatically, how do you have your iPod set up to sync music from under its Music tab in iTunes? You may want to double check these settings.

  • TS1382 5th Gen 80GB Classic is charged, but menu is stuck!

    5th Gen. Class 80GB Ipod.
My 5th Gen 80GB Classic ipod has not worked quite right in a while. I plugged into my JBL Soundstage, fully charged it, I toggle the top power/hold back and forth several times, all I see is the full menu, (music, photos, playlists, etc) but I can not scroll down using the wheel, or any other method!
I tried the toggle with HOLD thing, then pressing Center/Menu,and still nothing!
Since it shows the battery charge is full, then I'm thinking it's not the battery, but maybe the hard drive. I boght this new back in 2007, and once I took it to the geniuses at Apple store, ,they told me the HD was fried, like a computer crash, and for me to hand it over to them,. and for $185.00. they would give me a refurbish one. I was fuming!  After payoing almost $500.00 doallars for this and this happens?  I went home and called apple and talked to about five people until this nice supervisor actually helps me get this running again. Some genius!  And now after four years since this happened. now this.  I should just get a itouch with more bells and whistles, because this ipod might have numbered days.  How long should a 80GB Classic last?

Just wanted to give you guys an update: my iPod now works again fully, without having reformatted it, as Apple suggested.
I was reading some other posts around here, and decided to try something before going for the ultimate/decimating solution: redownloaded iTunes and reinstalled it. Install of checking for updates, I just went to Apple's site, and downloaded the whole thing. Plugged in my iPod, and now it all works! All the songs that wouldn't play before are now working just fine, as before.
Seems to me there's something funky on iTunes 7.5 for Windows or the upgrade process, which wasn't there in previous versions.
    Hope this helps!

  • Kenwood X991 & iP200 cable with iPod 5th Gen 80GB does NOT work correctly

I have a conundrum. My wife has the 4th Gen v1.2.1 iPod 30GB which works fine on my Kenwood X991 Head Unit. I recently purchased the "new" 80GB iPod 5th Gen with the latest version "1.0.2" which does NOT work properly. The iTunes software tells me that this 1.0.2 is the latest software.
When I attach my iPod to my stereo, it states "Reading" for eternity. It DOES play music but only plays Alphabetical Order ONLY. There is no ability to stop, change, fast-forward, reverse, etc....the only thing you can do is click "Source" to change to CD Player or Tuner, etc...
Does anybody out there know what is going on? I have a request into Kenwood as well. Thanks in advance for all your help!
    -Kingofbytes

Thanks for the help. It's an iPod Classic then 80GB. The unit plays when plugged in but does not allow searching, or switching songs nor displays as it is supposed to. My wife's 30GB works with no problems. Of note:
    Her 30GB = v1.2.1
    My 80GB = 1.0.2
Mine is newer by about 6 months. Both are the latest software according to the screen.
Kenwood has said to "reset the head unit" and "make sure I've got it plugged in properly". I need to try the reset part next but the last statement is funny to me. I can install a head unit, amplifier, re-run all speaker wire, install a Dual 10" subwoofer box, solder and wire tie all connections from a factory unit to a 3rd party Cable manager kit, but I need to "make sure" I know how to plug in an iPod cable.....laughable.

  • The (sad) tales of a 5th Gen 80Gb iPod classic

    Hey folks,
So here's my story: for years, I had a 10 Gb iPod. I bought it when the model had just come out, so you can do the math of how long ago that was. Over all years of using that iPod, I never ever had a single problem with it. I always used it on my Windows PC, no problems at all.
The story sadly changed when I bought my new 80Gb 5th Gen. iPod (which was bought a couple months before the touch models came out, so it's now a Classic - sorry, that part always entertains me).
Since buying that one, I've had a few problems I never experienced before. Songs that always played perfectly on my old iPod seemed to freeze the new one (I kept a copy of most songs on an external HD, so I could listen to them at work and so on, which made it easier to upload them to the new one). 99.9% of the songs came from CDs I own, and ripped through iTunes, mind you.
For that and other reasons, I had to learn quickly how to reboot my new iPod, something I'd never done on the old one.
And now, the greatest problem of all is here: since I installed iTunes 7.5 on my PC, it crashed a couple times while managing my iPod. Earlier today, after it happened for the last time, I recalled iTunes to notice that many of my songs on my iPod - HUNDRED, mind you - are now missing. As I go through the list of songs in my iPod, I get the "white exclamation mark inside the grey circle" next to the name of the songs. As I try to play them on iTunes, they don't play. As I try to play them on the iPod, it automatically skips to the next song.
No, I do not automatically sync my songs, which means there's no reason it should look for them again. They simply "disappeared" physically from my iPod apparently.
I called Apple about it. The first tech person was, with all due respect, useless. His suggestions were simply "reformat my computer" (???) and "reformat my iPod," but he gave me no explanation whatsoever for why (does "because my sheet says so" sound familiar?).
I finally got to talk to a supervisor, who did sound extremely more proficient and knowledgeable about what she was saying. In her opinion, for one reason or another (again, ???), my iPod lost the path to those songs. So, although they are physically in there, the iPod doesn't know anymore how to actually find them to play. Her suggestion, unfortunately, is also to reformat my iPod, and reupload all the songs. This, however, would not save any of the Playlists that took me forever to fine tune, as there is no way of saving Playlists from iPod they know.
I am officially scared right now that I will spend hours reformatting the iPod and reuploading the songs, just to have the iPod do the same thing again, to the same or other songs. The other option I can think of is to reupload just these "hundreds" of songs manually, but, again, what's to say it won't happen again?
In some ways, I do miss my trouble free older iPod.
Hope this helps someone who may be considering a change, or may be experiencing something similar. If you are, I'd appreciate some input on the matter!
    Have a good one, folks,
    D.

  • Where can i buy 5th gen 80GB ipod?

Now that the new ipod clasic is out replacing the 5th gen ipod, which i think is much nicer looking, whats going to happen to all the 5th gen ipods? I have a 60GB now and want to upgrade to to an 80, but i dont want to buy the "classic" because i think the full metal jacket looks ugly.

*i dont want to buy a refurb.*
    Because?
A refurb is identical to a new model except it is a lot cheaper.
Same warranty, same accessories, new case, etc.
*there should be plenty of new 5th gen ipods out there.*
There should be some but they are still going to be $349.
A new 5G 80GB iPod video is going to cost the same as the 160GB iPod Classic.
They are not going to be discounted anywhere.

  • 5th gen 80GB ipod - no sound ?!?!?

I have an 80GB 5th gen ipod.  I'm getting no sound from the headphone port or from my FM tuner, but I can play my ipod when it's plugged into my laptop via iTunes.  My friend had this issue a few years ago and Apple replaced his ipod because it was a "known issue".  Is this still available...and if so, how do I proceed?

I may be wrong but if you shut down your computer you should be fine to disconnect. When you shut down Vista will end whatever program is accessing the iPod, and it SHOULD do that safely. Then again, I would wait until another person seconds me on that.

  • Is it possible to restore my 5th gen iPod Touch without having to wait 12 hours?

So I have a 32gb 5th generation iPod touch, but someone decided to mess with me and put on restrictions for everything possible. I want to restore it back to factory settings, but whenever I connect it to our Mac and try to start up the factory reset, the time varies from12-19 hours. I'd really rather not wait that long, so is there any way I could perhaps speed this process up at all?

If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
You need the iPod and iPad conencted to the interned and FindMyiPod turned on on the iPod an the iPad need to have the FindMyiPhone app installed. That now requires iOS 7 on the device.
You can also wipe by on a computer/s browser, going to icloud.com>FindMyiPhone

  • 5th Gen 80GB is not being recognized by Windows/iTunes

Alright guys, here's my situation. My iPod has always worked fine. Today I plugged it in like I do every other day. When I plugged it in iTunes did not recognize it and then I got a Windows message that said "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows cannot recognize it." I thought this was strange because NOTHING about my iPod/iTunes had changed whatsoever. Next, I was prompted to update to the latest version of iTunes so I thought, "Oh dummy, that was the problem, you had an old version of iTunes." Wrong. I updated iTunes and STILL no recognizing of my black beauty. Next I turned to the Apple website to see what it said. I tried all of the options except "restore" because I refuse to lose my collection on my iPod. I have also tried using a different USB port, but that wasn't the problem. Reminder: the iPod is not recognized under the Device manager. So now I turn to my brothers here to help me solve my problem.

Try a different cable and if that fails, see if it is recognised in another computer, if youre ipod is still within warranty send it back to apple, it may be the dock connector.
Good luck and welcome to the boards

  • After being forced to restore my 5th gen iPod touch it keeps telling me that it's failed to restore, any suggestions, please?

The past couple of times I've plugged my iPod into iTunes it has said it's failed to sync it to my iTunes and hasn't allowed me to put music onto my iPod so I plugged it in today and it told me I needed to restore my iPod to be able to sync my music, photos, etc, onto my iPod and wasn't letting me do anything else with my iPod on iTunes, so, I was forced to restore it if I wanted to actually put more music on to my iPod. Restoring is not a great issue with myself because I always make sure to have folders saved on my laptop with back ups of photos and music, but, when I did restore it and it finished it popped up with this message:
So, I clicked okay and it told me for the recovery of my iPod I had to restore it again. I restored it. Again. It came up with this message. Again.
Can someone please help me? I will be very grateful!
I updated my iTunes about a week ago, I'm not sure if that could have anything to do with it?
    Thank you,

  • Issue with used 5th Gen 80GB Classic

Today I purchased a used iPod from the local pawn shop - bad idea, I know that now. It looked as though it was working fine before I bought it, but the trouble started when I tried plugging it into my computer.
A message popped up on my computer screen when I plugged the iPod in, telling me the device was corrupt. My girlfriend tried for two hours to reset it and repair it and all that - but nothing worked. The screen on which music should be displayed when you click on the little iPod symbol in iTunes is completely black. It shows no information, so I can't do a Restore - though a couple hours ago we were able to try a few times, but it didn't work.
I've also noticed now that, even though there is no data on the device, it keeps telling me in the "about" menu on the iPod itself: "74.3GB used; 0KB free".
Is this a lost cause?? I paid a good chunk of money for the iPod, and I'd really love it if anyone could help me figure out how to fix it.
What in Heaven's name did the previous user do to this thing!?
    NOTES:
I am using Windows Vista, on a Compaq laptop. We currently have no desktop right now, or any Apple computer.

  • Help!  I keep getting an error when trying to restore my 5th gen to factory setting

I've tried everything I've found online to do to restore my ipod to factory settings.  Some of the songs I've downloaded from iTunes play on my computer but not the ipod, even though the song title and cover art are on the ipod.  Someone please help!  Thanks

  • Unable to restore my 5th gen ipod video (unknown error 1418)

going through, listening to a regular album on my ipod speakers, as i usually do, my ipod just abruptly freezes after the end of one song. upon reseting, i was presented with the apple logo upon a black background, as usual, and then a white screen saying "connect to your computer. use itunes to restore." in four different languages. from there it switches itself off. when i try to turn it back on, it does the same.
i connected it to the computer to do as it suggested, where it proceeds to freeze my computer for up to 10 minutes, until the ipod does appear in itunes. when i try to restore it however, im presented with an error stating 'an unknown error has occurred. error 1418', or something to that effect.
so following the apple website's instructions, i updated itunes to 7.6, and tried again to no avail. i tried a different usb port, reregistered .dll files, and updated my windows USB drivers, but this has changed nothing.
can anybody suggest any other factors that are stopping me restoring. i have accepted the fact that i will need to restore it, its just a matter of now completing that task.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

One possible cause is a drive conflict...
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • 5th Gen 80gb iPod wont sync tv shows/podcasts

Hey I have looked at most of the solutions on how to sync tv shows and podcasts and I assure you that all of the necesary boxes are checked and the settings are correct. I bought this as a refurb and do not have a warranty. Can anyone help me figure out how to put the season of the office i bought from itunes onto my ipod? i have newest version of itunes and tried to restore as well. Thank you!

    Hey there,
Have you made sure you have set your iPod to sync TV Shows? To be sure, plug your iPod in and head over to the TV Shows tab once it appears and you have clicked on its device name in iTunes. Make sure there is a check mark next to Sync and then whatever settings you want for syncing tv shows to your iPod.
    [Syncing Videos to iPod|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1333]
Otherwise, if you have already completed these steps, the videos may not be compatible with your iPod. You will have to use a third party app such as [Videora|http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod> or [Handbrake|http://handbrake.fr>, to convert the videos to an iPod format, import the video into iTunes, and sync it to your iPod. I have used both of these apps with great success. Hope this helps.
