Restoring a previous system

I recently had to restore 10.4, quittting halfway through, then re-doing it again. The result being it hasn't restored my previous system. There Is a folder with all my apps, etc. in Macintosh HD. How do I go about re-instating my old profile?

By going through the items in the previous system folder & removing all the items that you need or want.
Use Software Update to update your system. When you are satisfied that your computer is working correctly, delete the previous system folder & empty the trash.

  • Restore without previous system tablespace backups

    Hi,
Can I restore a user tablespace to a previous point in time without having backups of the SYSTEM and UNDO tablespaces as of that time? Everything else in the database has been periodically backed up (archived logs, control files). System and undo backups are available, but after the data loss occurred.
Attempts to create a local DUPLICATE instance fail if I specify such previous point in time. Is there any other way to get that data out of RMAN backupsets?
    Environment:
    Oracle 9i for Linux (9.2.0.4)
    Thanks in advance.
    Ivan

Put the database into 'MOUNT' mode and then issue the restore and recover commands.
The database does not read the file headers until an alter database open command is issued.

  • Migration Assistant crashes when I try to restore from previous system bckp

When I first started up my new MacBook Pro and arrived at the Migration Assistant screen, I selected 'TimeMachine' backup, but the Installer freaked out and took me back to the language selection screen.
I have since tried doing the same thing in Utilities - Migration Assistant, but after a long period of MA 'calculating size' and then showing (briefly) the two users on my last system, it crashes.
I suspect there is a problem with the external drive that I have the Time Machine backup on. I got my MacBook Pro two days ago, and the first thing I did was Software Update, so there shouldn't be any conflicts going on.
Does anyone have any suggestions? My life is on the external drive, and the thought of losing files and settings is really making me sick.

try repairing the external drive (not permissions) with disk utility.
if migrating using MA doesn't work still doesn't work after that you have no choice but to do manual migration by restoring things you need by hand. see this link for a list of things to restore in your home directory.

to restore by hand from TM drive control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". this will let you access your old TM drive in browse mode.

  • Can I restore a previous system? Need 10.4 back running

Please help me in my conundrum.
I have been running 10.4 on my iMac and someone (accidentally) installed 10.2 on it (explanation below). Is there any way I can bring 10.4 back since my Mac Repair Shop had installed it for me. My Mac is old and it may be one of those that needs an internal DVD which I don't have. I have an external DVD connected with firewire but when I put the Tiger disc in it will show, but after restart it won't restart (eternal startup wheel), much less start the install process.
Will I have to go back to my repair guy to reinstall 10.4 for me, or what can I do?
If you want to read on: I was poised to change my startup disk with the 10.2 disk so I could repair my hard drive. Someone else made a few wrong clicks in my absence, wanting to help.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Had to get away from it for a little while...very frustrated!
Not it's not a black OS. It has 3Y073212008 on the upper left over the UPC, then on the right 10433-01, lower left 2Z607-3120-A. The disk itself says Mac OS version 10.5.2, AHT version 3A140, Disc version 1.1, 2Z691-6208-A. It was part of a hardware bundle
Sadly, it does not say 10.4 anymore. 10.2 has taken over, by the time I was told what was going on, the second install disk was already running. Nevertheless, the build # is 6C115. Additionally, this is all I can get for the hardware info:
    Machine Speed: 700 MHz
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    L2 Cache Size: 256K
Machine Model: iMac (version = 33.11)
    Boot ROM info: 4.1.9f1
    (told you, it's an oldie)
Interestingly enough, it does not recognize anything in the firewire port, but it shows me "PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D 1.07] Mass Storage Device" on my USB Hub. Hmmm, why would the external DVD be connected both ways? And I checked the wires, it really is connected both ways. Wouldn't it be great if there is just something screwed up in the connection of the ext. DVD to the iMac? I know that if I could just update to 10.5 I'd be in the clear. What do you think?
May not get to see your answer until tomorrow morning. A thousand thanks for taking up this messy fluke with me.

  • How do I use a backup of my previous system in migration assistant from an external hard drive?

I had to redo my system completely because Snow Leopard broke my Parallels and then when I went back to Leopard my entire system got all screwed up. So I archived and reinstalled Leopard. Transferred the entire Previous System file to my external hard drive then erased and installed a fresh install of Leopard then upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now I'm trying to restore my Previous System on my computer and I can get the Macbook Pro to recognize the external hd in Migration Assistant and in Disk Utility it appears I would have to transfer section by section. I'm trying to prevent that. I don't have money to buy Super Duper or anything else at the moment so Migration and Disk U. seem to be my only options unless you know of anything else.

Carbon Copy Cloner or SilverKeeper - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • How to revert to previous system?

I recently bought a used mac with OS X 10.4 preinstalled. Since I didn't know the administrator password, I used the OS X 10.3 install CD of one of my other macs to reset the password - but I went too far with the disk. Before I knew what I had done, the OSX 10.4 had been replaced by the older OSX 10.3. Now I have a "previous systems" folder containing the previous 10.4 system. How do I go about
making the "previous system" the current system?
    Thanks

    Paul:
The Previous System Folder contains User information from the initial install. The article Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature describes exactly what is in the Previous System folder. The article How to get files from a Previous Volume after Archive and Install describes how to restore your Users Folder, including data, third party applications in the Applications folder, and preferences and settings, if that was selected prior to the Archive and Install.
However, the Previous System Folder contains nothing that will restore the Previous System, namely Tiger. Unless you have the Tiger install disk, you are stuck with Panther.
My suggestion is that you restore your data and preferences as well as you can, and use Panther until you are able to get your hands on a Tiger install disk. Then you can do an Archive and Install. The seller of the computer should have included the install disk since according to the Apple Software License Agreement, the OS can only be installed on one computer at a time, and since the OS was installed on the computer that was sold to you the seller cannot legally have it installed on a different computer.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • How can I restore folders and files from Previous Systems folder

I have been unable to migrate files (or even find the option to migrate files) located in my Previous Systems folder. I've been able to change the Privilege of these files to Read & Write (though my Permissions still indicate "You can only read.") and drag them from my previous Users folder to my current desktop, which creates a situation where I have them but am still unable to alter them (or delete them).
    thanks, all.

Here's my exact issue: I've spent many hours converting vinyl records to mp3s, which were then stored in the iTunes folder of my previous system. Upon performing the Archive and Install, all of these files were located in my Previous Systems>Users>"X">Music folder, which initially could not be opened, prompting the notice, "The folder Music could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." So, I clicked "Get Info" and changed the Privilege from Read Only to Read & Write. From there I could open the folder, and as you pointed out, move these files wherever I chose. The problem is that I can't use them in any practical sense; I can't import them to my iTunes library and I can't delete them, being notified, "The operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified." Which, would lead me to believe that I have yet to restore them properly.

  • Restore "Previous Systems" after 'archive and reinstall'.

    Hi,
Long story short, I moved a crucial file and couldn't reboot... so I performed an 'archive and reinstall'.
This failed the first time, and worked the second time.
Now I can boot (into a fresh install), I moved the file back into the correct folder inside the "Previous Systems" folder.
Is there any way for me to revert/re-bless/boot back into this 'fixed' "Previous Systems" install?

Neither one of those files should affect your system and should be automatically rebuilt when you restart. There's no need to move them back. If things work properly in a newly created admin user account, then I suspect further plist corruption in the original account and suggest the following:
While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Restored OS, can't import mailboxes from previous system

Dang. I've tried every which way to get email files from the archived "previous systems" folder over to my new email library. If I try to import mailboxes, it doesn't detect valid mailboxes to import. If I literally drag and drop email files to the new inbox, the files move over but I can't see them in mail viewer. The only way it has worked is to open each old file individually (they do open and read OK) and choose 'move to' from the message menu. I can then move the file to a mailbox on the new viewer and it shows up fine. But I have thousands of old emails and this would drive me nuts.
    Any input or ideas?

Hi jdlaln, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems, & I think may make the ones you moved over show up...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • How do i return to a previous system after updating?

After trying to update our IMac to improve how it runs, we are unable to go back to our saved previous system. the entire computer is now set up differently and has none of our information on it. I think it's even running an older OS. I see all of our old files in a folder, on our hard drive, marked "Previous System", but I have no idea how to restore? HELP@!

Most likely you will need to reinstall your third-party software. However, before you do that try instead locating the various support files these applications use. Start with these folders:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/
    /Home/Library/Preferences/
    /Library/Applications Support/
    /Library/Preferences/
Look for files or folders pertaining to your third-party applications. For CS3 you might look for folders named "Adobe" and "Photoshop." In the preferences folder look for files beginning with "com.adobe."
You would then drag these items to the same location in the newly installed system. This is quite tedious but you may not have to reinstall. But no guarantees because Adobe tends to install support files all over the place.

  • Is iTunes 11.1.5 compatible with Mac OSX 10.6.8? If not how can I restore the previous iTunes version?

Problem: Recently when I open iTunes it doesn't work; the little pinwheel just keeps spinning.
I have tried leaving it on, as suggested by another user, for over 12 hours. I didn't work.
I think the new iTunes version, 11.1.5, is not compatible with the operating system; Mac OSX 10.6.8. If this is so, how can I restore the previous iTunes version?

You need to be updated to iTunes 11.2.2.
You might want to consider running the combo updater over your install to refresh your files.
    Combo updater: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update v.1.1 - 1.09 GB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After running the combo updater, select Software Updater and update iTunes.
If iTunes fails to open after updating, hold down the Option key when launching iTunes. It will ask you to locate your iTunes Library.
Note: I've seen users with their iTunes Library on an external drive spin like this when the drive was failed to be seen in Disk Utility. Run Repair Drive on the external drive to fix this issue.

  • I got the iphone 5, got some pics and msgs and contacts on it, and when i connected to my PC to restore my previous info from the old iphone, all the new stuff are gone, how can i get it back, thanks for help.

The voicemail system used for the iPhone is different from the voicemail system used on the rest of the Verizon Wireless network. When you activate the iPhone, you lose your saved voicemails from the other system. When you activate a non-iphone, you lose any saved voicemails from the iPhone voicemail system too.

  • How do I do back to previous system folder after archive and install?

Did an archive and install (retaining my existing user account), only to discover it was unnecessary. (Turns out the problem was hardware-related.)
How do I go back to using my previous system folder?

    FloydianSlip wrote:
Huh. Hardly seems to be worth "archiving" if you can't go back to the archive.
The purpose of an *Archive & Install* is to install a fresh, known-good copy of the OS, while preserving in the archive all the files from the previous copy of the installed OS that you might potentially need for some reason. (This is why it is called an Archive & Install.)
However, since any of these archived files might have been damaged in some way since they were installed or created, or in some way conflict with a freshly installed OS, they cannot be considered "known-good" without further testing & should not be reintroduced haphazardly into the "live" system.
The value of this install method should be obvious if you consider that if the OS is sufficiently damaged it will not run the computer, either at all or well enough to recover from whatever damage is done. Without this option, you would have to erase the existing startup disk completely (with the *Erase & Install* method), losing everything created or installed besides what is contained in the OS installer.
The closest equivalents to the kind of archive that you can "go back to" are cloning the entire drive or using the 'restore from Time Machine' option from the installer DVD's Utilities menu, assuming you use Time Machine.

  • Startup from previous system?

I installed OS 10.4.2 over a newer version (10.4.6? on my iMac G5). I have the "Previous System" folder. I want to get back to where I was before I stupidly installed an older OS. How can I start up from the previous system? Thanks!

That is not possible from the Previous System folder. That folder is only there to provided for the recovery of files.Hence the reason that a backup is suggseted because if you had backed up with a bootable clone going back would be a matter of rebooting to the colne and restoring the clone.
You will need to reinstall the previous system from CD.
