Restoring a single account from Time Machine using Migration Assistant
I have seen a few threads on this but none that quite describe the scenario I'm dealing with. I had a HD that died. Sent it away to Apple. It came back with a brand new empty HD.
I fired up OS X, attached my external HD with my Time Machine backups, opened the Migration Assistant and selected "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and my Time Machine backup didn't show up at all.
I then verified that the Disk and Computer both had the name that they did before: BigDisk and Rage respectively. Still nothing.
I don't want to have to manually copy over files from this backup. That is not supposed to be the point of this thing. Do I need to create a user account with the same name as the backup? I've been trying it from a user account with a different name.
Also, the backup only includes specific things in the Home Folder. Is that going to be a problem? Is this meant to restore an entire Hard Drive or something?

yes, that should work.
I found a workaround:
1. Create an Account that is not the account to be backed up
2. Enter Time Machine
3. Navigate to the home folder of the account to restore in the most recent backup
4. Restore it
5. Create an Account and specify that you should use the home folder that already exists with that name.
that works too.
Sorry, I misspoke earlier. I don't backup the whole volume or the whole home folder. I exclude certain folders using the Time Machine exclusions. Does this explain why my backup was unavailable in the Migration Assistant.

Time Capsule works just fine, using TC Application I can restore single files, there is also XXXXXX.sparsebundle file on Time Capsule HDD which I can mount with no problem and see all of my backups.

I just ran into the same problem, neither the Migration Assistant nor "Restore from Backup" from the 10.5 Install DVD would find a valid backup on my Time Capsule (which kinda renders it useless).
After some googling and trial and error I found a workaround using Terminal. I don't know why mounting the sparebundle image with Disk Utility wouldn't work, but it isn't available when your computer crashed anyway... So here is my method:
-Boot from the System DVD, choose the language
(-Goto Utilities and start the Disk Utility and reformat your drive, if on Intel check that you partition it with GUID, NOT Apple Partition Scheme NOR MBR, restart from DVD) only if something went wrong with your disk like in my case
-Goto Utilities and start Terminal
-In Terminal first make a directory for the mount, type: mkdir /Volumes/MyBackup
-Then mount the Time Capsule and link it to the folder you created, type: mount -t afp afp://myuser:mypassword@IPAdressOfMyTimecapsule/VolumeWhereMyBackupIs /Volume/MyBackup
-The AFP-Volume is now mounted, but you can't see anywhere.
-Quit Terminal, this will bring you back to the 10.5 Installer.
-Goto Utilities and choose "Restore System From Backup"
-The Dialog will ask you for a Backup Source. You should now see your Time Capsule and an already mounted Time Machine Volume at the location you specified in Terminal.
-Select the Time Machine Volume and press Continue, it'll take a while you show you all the backups, choose the one you want, choose a destination, drink tea. -
Restore Inbox Email Accounts from Time Machine?
My Mac lost power while I was in Mail. When I rebooted, my mail had lost all my Inboxes and accounts. I tried to restore from Time Machine, but I can't get all my accounts back. I have found all my stored emails in a Time Machine folder. Is there any way to go back to a previous version of Mail where it was all organized and intact? What I'm seeking specifically is for the numerous email accounts I had set up show up again under my Inbox.

Do the mailboxes appear in Mail, but are empty or incomplete? If so, I'd be inclined to start by selecting each mailbox in turn, then from the menubar, +Mailboxes > Rebuild.+ That may fix it without any further hassles.
If the mailboxes appear, but the rebuild doesn't recover all the messages, see #15 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If the mailboxes don't appear at all, quit Mail and use Time Machine to restore the preferences file, then the messages, as in #15.
It's in <your home folder>/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If you were searching for it via a Finder search, you have to include +system files,+ as odd as that seems. But the easiest way to find it is to just navigate to it in your backups. -
Restore a single app from Time Machine
I had an unexpected hiccup in my computing yesterday...
I went to open Excel from the dock like I had 100 times before only to have a question mark appear over the icon. The application never started. I poked around and it no longer appears in the MS Office application folder (though Word, etc. are still there). I have no idea where it went!
So, my question is can I restore Excel from my Time Machine? Is it as simple as accessing TM, clicking on the Apps icon, clicking on Excel and hitting restore?Thanks. I will check try to restore it when I get home and have access to my TM.
I checked Spotlight when Excel disappeared and found nothing but residual files. The app itself is gone. Even the .xls files that I have on my computer just show up as blank, unrecognized files.
I cannot imagine that I inadvertently deleted the app, but you never know....
I will let you know if the restore works. If it does, I will assume that I accidentally got rid of it. If the program won't restore or goes away again, it must be some other mysterious problem.

I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?
You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

I was using osx 10.5.8 and upgraded to mavericks 10.9.4,after that ..when restoring all my data from time machine ,the new mavericks os was replaced by the old OS 10.5.8 ...any solution to get back to the upgraded mavericks OS????

Its been awhile since I used iPhoto, but I have done it.
If I recall correctly this is how.
In iPhoto open event that you need to restore the photo to ( the event that originally contained it )
Then open TM it should show that same event and then go back in time until you find the missing shot
Highlight the one you need to restore and tell TM to restore it.

HT1553 I restored my hard drive from time machine. Why is iPhoto not displaying images properly?
I restored my hard drive from time machine after power blinks corrupted the file system so badly that disk utility could not repair it. Since then, iPhoto has not displayed images correctly. Events are there, and blank squares are shown, but that's all. I rebuilt small and all thumbnails and permissions -- I think the top three or four options in the iPhoto rebuild utility, which took five hours to do but which seems not to have changed anything. The iPhoto library is still more than 100GB, so the photos are there. I didn't choose rebuild from backed up --- whatever the final option on the rebuild menu offers -- because that seems to be appropriate only when a backup is interrupted. Could certainly do it, though. How do I get iphoto behaving again? I have full time machine backups saved automatically and another fairly recent copy on a separate hard drive stored remotely. Thanks for whatever help anyone can provide. I've looked at existing questions and solutions without success so far.
What version of iPhoto and system are your running? Since you've tried rebuilding with iPhoto give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you have an external HD you might want to have the rebuilt copy created on it unless you have well more than 100 GB available on your boot drive.

I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.

Messages and incoming mail works fine. It's just the smtp mail setting that's the problem.
Any help greatly appreciated.The mail rules are stored in your ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~mail/Data.MailData folder, in a plist called SyncedRules.plist.
If you're signed into iCloud D&D, that's where you'll find it.
If you're *not* signed into iCloud, then you probably have a folder called something like ~/Library/Mobile Documents.####### where the # signs are actual numbers. Digging into that folder, you'll fild the SyncedRules.plist file.
Thing is, I don't know how Mail uses rules without iCloud; if there's a "local" rules location. There probably is, but someone else who's not using iCloud may have to help you there... -

There are two ways - you can boot your old Mac in Target Mode (reboot your Mac, and as soon as you hear the startup chime hold down the T key on the keyboard until you see the yellow/orange Firewire logo on screen). You can then use a FireWire cable to connect your new mac to your old one. The old Mac hard drive will appear on your new Mac as if it is an external hard drive.

If you don't have a firewire cable but you do have a home network (i.e. both computers can access the Internet at the same time), you can share the hard drive on your old Mac and then connect to it on your new Mac.

Finally, if the above doesn't thrill you, you can hook an external drive to your old Mac, copy the mail folder over to it, then connect the external drive to your new Mac and copy it over. It's two steps, but if you don't have a firewire cable and aren't comfortable with sharing over a network it will work just as well - you just have to wait for the mail folder to copy twice instead of once.

Restore one hard disk from Time Machine backup
Is it possible to restore only one disk from Time machine backup? I have a SSD with OSX 10.8.5 on it while user folders are on a separate 4TB hard drive. I also have a Time Machine volume for backups. Yesterday the user drive failed beyond repair, but fortunatly I do have a recent backup. When I tried to resotre following insructions provided in the Time Machine manual, it does not give me an option to resore a specific disk from the backup, and tries to resotre only the System disk backup, in this case the SSD. Is there a way to restore a disk on which no system is installed?

If i restore a user folder from time machine, is it just restoring the files associated with the user or programs as well? Im asking because Apple Store just reset my system and said to restore files i needed and not to do a full restore. to try and determine if it was a software issue causing the problems.
