Restoring a switch after a swapout

Hello all
I'm looking to update our documentation on MDS9000 switch recovery - specifically replacing the whole switch after an swapout.
The MDS cookbook has a procedure for replacing one but makes no mention of what to do differently if the switch is in a larger fabric (and therefore alot of the information is already know to the SAN)
The Procedure basically says, stick an IP address on it, do a tftp restore, save it and reboot.
Is that best practice in a multi-switch SAN?  Or would a better procedure be to restore the switch specific stuff and rely on normal switch operations to replicate all the other info i.e. device aliases and zone info etc.  So in essence, the same procedure for adding a new switch.
Thoughts?
Thanks
Steven

Hey Steven,
The procedure is intended more for replacing a broken switch.  If you go change the model, or if it's connected into a different fabric, things become trickier :-)
If I understand you correctly, a good approach would be to install the new switch in parallel (topology-wise) to the existing one, selectively restore the config to avoid conflicts and rely on CFS to absorb information from the fabric such as device aliases.
Do you have requirements that conflict with this? Things such as keeping the domain IDs identical to the old one, port availability constraints....
HTH,
Kris

    hi
i thought it to be SELINUX problem and google gave me exactly what i wanted .. solution to it..
SELINUX-Targeted Policy disallows restore segment prot after reloc which can be corrected by switching to SELINUX-permissive policy..
this can be achived temporarily by issuing
    setenforce permissiveregards

how can i reset or restore my iphone after dropping it in water????

There are a lot of posts here about your problem, read a few of them and they all come back to switching the phone off immediately and have it in a very good closed bag of dry rice for a week and advisely swith the rice for a fresh charge of dry rice every week for a number of weeks when it was really submersed. Ckuan advice times 3. The iPhone has a detector which indicates whether the iPhone was in the water, Apple can give you an indication about the price first if you visit them.

  • How I restored 3G switch on the iPhone 4S

I got the 3G switch back on my 4S
My 4S arrived earlier (I ordered it last week), and I noticed it missing. But when I backed up my 3GS with that 3G switch OFF, then restored my 3GS to my 4S, the switch is now back on the 4S.
This seems like the only way to get it back.
If you have an older iphone that can handle 5.x:
    1) back up the 4S
    2) restore the 4S' back up to the older phone
    3) let the old phone sync, etc
    4) back up the old phone with the 3g toggle off
    5) restore the 4S with the old back up and toggle switch comes back
This is an EASY fix for apple:
    1) Add the 3G switch back
    2) if the 3g switch is turned off AND there is no wifi connection, Siri auto disables.
    VERY.. VERY simple solution
    I tried siri over Edge with no wifi.. she takes.... F O R E V E R... so that's probably their reasoning
My issue is in my house, I get 1 BAR to NO 3G.. and FULL edge.. the instant I step outside, I get full bars on 3G.. my house just must not like cell phones LOL! So when I'm at home, I always need to be on EDGE/WiFi.

Sorry about the lack of details. I posted right b4 I went to bed and was pretty tired. I'm off to a Dr's appt atm. When I get back I will post exact steps along with screenshots, etc.
Yeah I'm annoyed that they took the switch away. The ipad 2 has a FAR better/stronger antenna vs the phones. So it will always get far better signal. So having it gone on my ipad isn't a big deal. Plus the only time I need 3g on my ipad 2 is when I'm out of the house. But in my house, I get 0 to 1 bar 3G. Step outside and I get MAX bars (on my 4S). My ipad 2 always has 2-4 bars 3G in the house.
There's a few things apple can do.. some of them I've listed but others I realized after I slept
    1) If 3G signal drops below 2 bars, switch to edge (1 bar 3g is **** poor call quality and data speed anyway)
    2) Drop to edge the instant the device connects to wifi
    3) Or, simply restore the switch and let the user deal with it
    4) Lastly, REPLACE the switch with options: 3G OFF, 3G ON, 3G off when on Wifi, 3G AUTO (what it is now)

  • I restored my Iohone after it synced and now all of my pictures are gone ! what can i do to fix this problem???

I restored my Iphone after it synced , everything else is there but my pictures!
what can i do to fix this ??

You should be importing all pics taken with iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera, particularly before any update or restore.
If you have failed to do this, then they are likey gone.
You can try restoring from backup.

  • My ipad mini says to connect to itunes, and I try to restore it, but after its done extracting a message comes up saying that device is not found, is there anyway i can fix this? I don't care if i don't get my stuff back

My iPad mini says to connect to iTunes, and I try to restore it, but after its done extracting a message comes up saying that device is not found, is there anyway i can fix this? I don't care if i don't get my stuff back, i just want my iPad restored to its starting settings.

If everything else that you try fails, I would try using another computer. Since you don't care about saving any data, any computer that is running the latest version of iTunes might be able to restore the iPad. You could make an appointment at an Apple Store Genius Bar and they can do it for you.
If that isn't feasible for you, try using a different cable, a different USB port. reboot the computer, and reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Then try again.

After I updated to iOS 7.0.2, my iTunes keeps telling me to restore my iPhone, after I restored it. Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset   >  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Backing up, Updating and Restoring  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

Did you restore the iPod on this computer?
What exactly happens when you try to sync?
    Does iTunes see the iPod?

If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • Disk utility does not allow to restore Macintosh HD after I deleted a small size (1GB) partition

Hi, when I tried to create a new 1GB partition (on my Mac mini 2011, using Mac OS X 10.7.3) and then to delete it I could not restore (increase) Macintosh HD size using Disk utility (diskutil list shows the same value for Macitosh HD (498,17GB) partition before and after I deleted a new created 1GB partition).
Please help, how I can restore the original size of Macintosh HD when Disk utility does not allow to restore Macintosh HD after I deleted a small size (1GB) partition?
    Thank you.

The bottom right corner dragging does not help in my case, because it shows that Macintosh HD partition size is maximal, but its real size did not change after I removed 1GB partition.
Maybe any other idea can help me, for example some built-in tool like diskutil which allows to view and manage unused partitions in terminal?
    Thank you.

  • HT4061 How to restore my ipad after downloading itunes?

How to restore my ipad after downloading itunes?

Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
    Before restoring:
Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes.
    Back up your device.
Transfer and sync content to your computer.
    Restoring your iOS device
Connect your device to your computer.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes. Select the Summary tab, and click the Restore button.
    Click Restore.
After a restore, the iOS device restarts. You should then see "Slide to set up". Follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant.
If needed, restore your device from a previous backup.
If restoring does not finish successfully or if a restore error appears, see iOS: Resolving update and restore alert messages.
    Additional Information
If your device is continually restarting, not responding, or showing the Apple logo with no progress bar or a stopped progress bar, place the device into recovery mode and try restoring again.
Devices with cellular service should activate after a restore. If activation is not successfu, see the options below.
    Symptoms
Your iPhone may display one of the following messages when you attempt to activate it:
"Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable."
"The iPhone is not recognized and cannot be activated for service."
"iTunes was unable to verify your device."
    Resolution
Perform the following steps if you receive one of the messages above:
    Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to Wi-Fi if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Applefor assistance.

  • My iTouch can only be restored thru iTunes after update

I updated my iTunes to 10.5.1.42 last night, and then updated the iTouch software to IOS 5.0.1.
Now, when I plug my iTouch into my computer to sync and open up iTunes, the iTouch is found and recognized, but the only option I have is to set up as a new iPod or to restore from backup. After multiple restores, these are still my only options - not getting the window with syncing options at all. How do I get my music, podcasts, etc. back onto my Touch?

I've read in another thread, and tried at home, it's a little unorthodox but it worked, so it goes like this:
Plug in your iTouch then start doing the restore backup, then after it started, unplug it, your iTouch will prompt u for a restart, et voilá. It should be fine. (At least it worked for me)
    Hope this helps.
