Restoring a user directory encrypted with FileVault

The hard drive on my PowerBook (which was running Tiger) was hosed last week. "Luckily", I had been making regular backups of the entire hard drive onto a Firewire drive.
Meanwhile, I've got a spanking new iMac here (running Leopard). I plugged in the backup drive hoping to restore all my precious files, only to discover that everything seems accessible EXCEPT the user directory, which was encrypted with FileVault. In Finder, it looks like an alias that's not pointing to anything.
Now I'm panicking. It looks like everything is there, in that the directory containing the encrypted user directory takes up about as much space as I'd expect it to. I can access everything off the hard drive that's not encrypted. But all the stuff that's actually important to me is inaccessible.
If I can't recover this directory, I'm screwed. But I have no idea where to start. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance (and more later if you help!)

Glad you recovered it!
As I recall, the Filevault encrypted sparseimage is normally kept in /HD/Users/username, but when you are logged into that account the username folder is temporarily renamed .username (with a leading period) so as to made invisible, and a temporary alias called username is created in Users instead.
If so, then it sounds from your description of your files as if you may have been logged into the Filevault account when you made the backup clone. I don't know if you plan to continue to use Filevault in the future, but if so, here is a tip from SuperDuper's documentation:
If you’re using FileVault, your home folder and all its data is stored in a single, large file that’s open and active when you’re logged in. Because of this, you should create a non-FileVault account for use with SuperDuper! Then, log out of your FileVaulted account, into this new account, and run SuperDuper! from there. This ensures that the special FileVault volume is put away and backed up cleanly.

  • How can I retrieve the password hint of an external drive encrypted with FileVault 2?

    Hi,
I'm running on 10.7.3, I have an external HDD that is fully encrypted with FileVault 2.  When encrypting an external drive, FileVault 2 doesn't provide a recovery key, but it gives you the opportunity to give a hint at the time you enter the password.  My question is: how can I get this hint?
I'm asking because I can't mount the drive anymore.  I keep getting prompted to enter the password, and although I believe I'm sure what the password is, it keeps getting refused.  The weird thing is that I have never been asked this password because the drive has always been automatically mounted after reboots, I guess because the password was in my Keychain.  I have no idea why it no longer auto-mounts and none of the passwords I tried worked.
In Disk Utility, when I tried to "verify" the locked volume, Disk Utility logs an error in system.log with no other user visible action.  I filed a bug with Apple about this (#11286871) but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.  The error logged is:

Even if you succeed with the difficult instructions to do this, if you are running Mavericks (10.9.x) on your Mac, count on it to start over with a whole new backup of your Mac, so you will have two separate backup files for the Mac on the Time Capsule.
Realistically, few of us ever need to go back months or years to retrieve a file from Time Machine. My recommendation would be to keep the external hard drive around for a few months until you have a good backup history established for the Mac....and then delete the backups from the drive and use it as a spare hard drive.

  • After encrypting with filevault 2 on mountain lion, safari is extremely slow

after encrypting with filevault2 on mountain lion, safari is running extremely slow.
it's taking more than 45 seconds (sometimes a full minute) to load pages.
my internet speeds are 35 mbps download and 6.35 mpbs upload, so it's not my internet connection.
i have deleted the cache files and the system preferences.
i'm finding that chrome is faster, but i'm seeing slowness there too.
in encrypted using filevault 2.0 yesterday, all software is up to date.
can anyone please help me with this?  i don't want to have to turn off filevault.
    thanks!

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have a wrong owner. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID \) -ls
Press return. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • After installing Lion 10.7.2, user login can't identify password with Filevault 2 activeted

Hello. I used Filevault 2 until last update of Lion, 10.7.2, because it don't let me logging in...as if unaware the password, but password recovery fortunatly!
Ok, then I've changed password and the suggestion. After reboot the problem persists and it seems the changes have not been applied, suggestion sentence was the same...
I think very much that this issue is a bug of Lion updating.
Can anybody help me? Or do I (we) wait an other update?

Thanks a lot for this hint: it helped me solve the same problem, but there is a prerequisite in order to have that small menu appear on the the upper right corner of the (very) grey login screen I get after installing Filevault 2:
    See this discussion :
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16826273#16826273
-> you have to enable that menu on the login screen: go to System Preferences -> Users and Groups -> Options -> Check the 2nd option "Display the Input Menu on the login screen " (that's a translation of the French "Afficher le menu Saisie dans la fenêtre d'ouverture de session")
This grey screen isn't the normal one with a background image I had after a normal boot.
    Problem description:
My setup: Mac Pro 2008, French numerical keyboard, Mac OS 10.7.3.
The problem appeared after switching from Filevault 1 (user environment encrypted) to Filevault 2 Full Disk Encryption.
My keyboard wasn't recognized properly: it defaulted to a US all caps layout. I had to use the recovery key to log in.
    Hope this helps other,

  • Time Capsule is backing up everything- apart from my user directory!

Can see backups going back for years for every folder except my user drive, and as I've never needed to restore from it I hadn;t ever realised this was the case.
Obviously it's really worrying me as I assume it means I wouldn't be able to restore my user directory (comprising of pretty much everything I would want but for my Dropbox account which would be safe) if something went wrong and it failed.
The time casule back ups are running regularly as planned and seem to be successful for my partner who is also on my hoe network with her MacBook (2009ish).
Other issue is that every so often, the back up will just go on a mental 70-odd GB backup session that is completely unwarrented as far as I'm aware; i.e. little has changed but for casual web surfing.
    Specs as follows:
    Time capsule bought Feb 2014
WD My passport attached to the TC's arse, for storage of movies and home video library
Running 10.7.5 on a white MacBook bought in October 2007 (she's doing well isn't she?)
    HDD capacity = 120GB, Available = 4GB
Like 20KB of RAM or something
Quite concerned. Any help much appreciated.
    I'm lookin' at you, Pondini
    Pete

I checked excluded items and other standard TC/TM settings several times before original post and nothing was excluded, plus my settings all seem to be normal.
User directory is not on the external drive, it's on my Mac's hard drive as per it's installation back in 2007.
One of the things I tried before oringial posting was to deselect the TC's 'Data' drive (the location of all TM backups), and then reselect it as the location for future back ups. After waiting 10mins or so for th machine to take stock of my 'changes', I returned to see that the TM preferences pane showed the "Oldest" and "Most Recent" back up as Never, and that my next back up would be approx. 112GB in size.
As this was late last night I decided to do a Windoze-style off-and-on-again with the MacBook and get some shut-eye - when I returned in the morning it seems to be finishing off a backup, while also saying it's done a backup that completed an hour or so ago.
I'm guessing this means that it didn't do a big old 112GB backup as it wouldn't have completed in under 8 hours?
I will leave it to finish while I'm out and then check to see if I can access my home directory through entering Time Machine later on.
In the meantime, thanks for the quick responses; any ideas on the occasional 70+ GB backups for no reason?
    Cheers

  • How to update "Encrypt with UserKey" after Windows User Profile replacement?

A problem with my User Profile required that the files be backed up, the profile deleted, a new profile created and my files restored. I have several SSIS projects built in Visual Studio 2012 that use "EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey". I assume the
"UserKey" is based on the SID or GUID of my User Profile. Now when I open these projects I get the Warning:
Warning 2 Warning loading SSISProject.dtproj: Warning: Failed to decrypt sensitive data in project with a user key. You may not be the user who encrypted this project, or you are not using the same machine that was used to save the project. If the sensitive data is a parameter value, the value may be required to run the package on the Integration Services server. SSISProject.dtproj 0 0
Is there a way to reset the UserKey in an existing project to the key for my new Profile? Is the value derived and used for encryption stored in the .dtproj file? If so can I copy that value from a new SSIS project into the .dtproj file for my old projects?
There has to be some way to "transfer ownership" of an SSIS project.

There has to be some way to transfer "ownership" of SSIS projects between developers. Forget about my specific case of my profile being recreated. Let's say I built this SSIS project and was required to use Encrypt with UserKey. I leave
the company. They ask another developer to make changes to the project. My old "ownership" of the project should be somehow transferable to the new developer. It shouldn't be tied to my ID (which no longer exists at the company) in perpetuity. Microsoft
has to have some way to transfer "ownership" of SSIS Projects with "Encrypt with UserKey". It's such a common use case I can't believe they wouldn't provide for it.
No, there is no way . This option is the default and it is actually the worst option precisely because it is useless in team development environment. Use
EncryptSensitiveWithPassword option just like Arthur suggested and you should be fine.

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

Sorry no, if you don't knnow the encrypted password, then you can't use that backjup.

I'm not sure how to do this, but what I want to do is put this file in C:/My Documents, but I need to be able to verify that C://My Documents exists, if not put it in C:/Program Files.
Can any one help me out?

Need some help with putting a folder in users directoryI recomend using System.getProperty( "user.home" ) not a hard-coded value.
    This will use the users home folder ( C:\My Documents ) on Win9X (I guess), C:\Documents and Settings\<current user> on Win2K +, and ~ on Unix-a-likes.

  • Directory Console with user accounts.

    Hellos,
Is it possible for me to create an "admin" user with just add/modify/update rights in a specific subtree but can view ALL attributes on Edit.
I have tried using Access Permissions. I can set the user and rights and subtree OK.
My problem is that when I open the Console and login as my user...
    I can only see 2 tabs.. Servers/Applications and Users/Groups.
When I seach Users I can only see the 3 action buttons: Edit Delete Create
Edit only allows me to edit certain common attributes...
How do I get the Advanced Edit features which shows ALL attributes a user has, e.g. lastmodified title etc etc...
Any hints accepted. I have trawled the manuals.
Is advanced edit (or generic editor) only a "true" administrator user (Directory Manager) feature?

I think I have solved my own problem - On the user accounts page there is a link to "change the way user accounts log on or off". When I clicked on this I got a message saying settings could not be changed because of an offline page setting. When I changed this setting, I was able to select the types of user switching, and my other user accounts became available.

  • If i restore a user folder from time machine. is it just restoring all files associated with the user or programs also?

If i restore a user folder from time machine, is it just restoring the files associated with the user or programs as well? Im asking because Apple Store just reset my system and said to restore files i needed and not to do a full restore. to try and determine if it was a software issue causing the problems.

Just the user's folder. Nothing else. See Pondini's TM FAQs, for details.

  • Mobile User doesnt work with user directory set on external drive

i'm in the progress of migrating some users from local user accounts to mobile user accounts.
unfunny thing is that creating the local copy of the mobile user accounts works perfect if the user directory is set on the internal drive of leopard server, however if I move the directory to an external drive no more locale login is possible, just "an error has occured" is reported.
I suspect a problem with user rights on the acl, however I havnt got an idea how to set them properly.

I'm having the same problem with Network Homes. When I create then in Workgroup Manager on the main drive with Mac OS X Server it all works great. When I create and share a folder on the second internal disk the client get "an error occurred" message.
Does the name of the folder matter?
    Server HD/Users/glimonez - Works like a charm
    Same Xserve second drive
Data/Users/glimonez - an error has occurred"
What should the permissions be for the Users folder on Data? What should I use to change them?
Also, is there a way to apply the default permissions to a users home folder? Desktop, Downloads etc for them only, and Public and sites to whatever they should be? I've only seen "apply permissions to folder and everything enclosed" options.
    Sorry for long post

  • How do you setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server?

I want to be able to setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server.  What is the best way to do this? I am running Server 10.6 with 10.6 clients.  Open Directory will be used to authenticate and manage preferences.   Also, this one account will be used simultaneosly in a computer lab setting, so files will be stored locally in the client, hence the need to NOT sync to the server.  Any Ideas?

So what does WGM Look like in the Home Tab? afp://servername.domainname/Users? or afp://Users?
The attached screen shots should help you:
You will only have to do this step once. Obviously you want to use the user's shortname here.
Then, you will see this as an option in WGM:

  • Partitioning the HD with the second partition as the Users directory

Please help. Does anybody know how to do this, Boot drive is the first partition and the second partition is the Users directory. Please provide step by step instructions if possible. Thanks

yes you can, but I would advise against doing so.
The purpose is usually to use another disk drive to improve performance. Using a partition on the same drive just adds longer seeks from head movement instead.
you can use FW but if the drive is not available, does not power on or mount, you can run into problem of creating a default account and messing up the /Volumes directory.
In "Missing Manual" and elsewhere the easy way is to just open NetInfo Manager, click on Users tab, then your short-name. Authenticate and change the value for "home" from /Users/account-name to
    /Volumes/vol-name/Users/account-name
Save, update, restart the netinfo database, logout and log back in.
You are better off usually with two drives on separate buses, not on the same bus but different channels to improve I/O and to keep the boot drive free of media files etc to help performance and maintenance.
You can also change /Users to another volume and use a symbolic link in its place. Changing Home Directory
