Restoring a W540 from USB Recovery Drive

I've tried to restore from a USB drive, as per the instructions:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024
The thing is that it doesn't work with a brand new blank SSD. I get a message about 'no system device' instead. Has anybody had any joy with swapping to a new drive with this guide & tool?

You should be able to enable that option in the BIOS.

So what you want is to be able to boot from OS X and retrieve your files
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Of course if it's not booting up, it's easier to fix in place
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro?view=documents#/
...so I am trying to boot from a USB recovery drive but when I select it nothing happens it just goes to the restore options
"Recovery HD" is a partition on your boot drive which you option or commnad r key held at boot time to get into and then repair the Macintish HD partition.
If you have this on a external USB thumb drive, then that's all it is, no OS X, programs or files.
If your talking a USB external drive, it has to be a OS X bootable clone made with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and the option key held at boot time gives you that boot option.
    Most commonly used backup methods
So what your saying is you have a external clone and by holding the option key down at boot all you get is it directly going to Recovery HD?
There is no Startup Manager option to choose what to boot from?
This could mean Apple changed something, or your external bootable clone isn't one, or the wrong software used so it's not being recognized by Startup Manager as a bootable option.
What did you use to make the external OS X USB bootable drive?

  • HP Mini 110-3520ca constantly restarts when trying to restore from usb flash drive

    Hi,
I have a HP Mini 110-3520ca that I upgraded to Windows 8, but was having issues with freeze ups and shut downs so I decided to go back to Windows 7 Starter.    When I tried to restore to factory default the files were corrupted and I couldn't restore from the recovery hard drive or my external back up files.  I ordered the recovery  USB flash drive from HP and tried to restore from it.  It completes the Recovery Preparation and the Software Installation finishes, Windows starts to load, but Ithen it goes back to welcome to Recovery Manager.  When I try to start Windows without the flash drive I get an error log that is below.  Can someone tell me how to fix this or what needs to be done to get my Windows working again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Restoring to SSD from USB drive with no HD

My Acronis cloning software refuses to work, and they refuse to help, so I'm trying to make my solid state drive the bootable device by making a system restore image on a USB external drive, and booting to a system repair DVD. I can't make the DVD disk boot! And I can't make recovery manager start with F11 despite it saying it will on the lower right screen.
I get an error "This version of system Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair" I just made it from the computer I'm trying to repair! And if the hard drive is unplugged, how dies it know what version I'm trying to repair?

    Hello @davidstreb,
I understand that you are not able to enable a system recovery from the RECOVERY Partition on your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you!

  • S210 Touch Windows USB Recovery Drive does not boot

I have an S210 Touch and I am looking to swap out the existing hard drive for an SSD.  Looking to do this in a "sanctioned" way from the discussion forums i.e. create a recovery USB drive WITH the Recovery Partition and boot from it - this would be the same use case if the hard drive crashed and I want to recover to a blank replacement drive:
      http://lnv.gy/Y0hlMU
which is similar to this set of official instructions:
      http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/ht076024
There are also other official posts on creating the recovery USB drive, and pressing F12 at POST to boot from the USB drive.  In the BIOS, Secure Boot is turned off and the Optimization (last tab) is set to Others.
When I try to boot from the Wndows Recovery USB drive, however, the USB drive would start, then the Lenovo logo would come on, and the process repeats itself until I pull the plug F12 does NOT work.  Apparently, this symptom has been experienced by others looking to install Unbuntu, though it is happening WITH the Windows RECOVERY DRIVE.
Is there something inherently wrong with the S210 Touch that it won't boot the Windows Recovery Drive?
Being curious, I also tried a DOS (Win98) - formatted USB drive, and for some reason, IT BOOTS!!!
Some more sanity checks (Secure Boot is OFF, Optimization is Other):
    1.  Created a recovery drive from a working Window 8.1 machine (Retail version installed on a Dell) and attempted to boot.  This time, F12 does bring up the boot screen, but USB is NOT a choice to boot from.
    2.  Created a recovery drive from the S210 WITHOUT the Recovery Partition - the USB Boot - Lenovo Logo cycle goes on.  Perhaps there's a problem with the preinstalled copy of Windows on ALL (!!!) S210 Touch machines???

Long story short, I finally moved my Windows 8 installation to an SSD using a 3rd party product's boot CD to back up the factory hard disk to an external USB hard disk, swapped in the SSD, tthen restoring it to the SSD.  Futzed around with moving / reducing / deleting unnecessary partitions so my windows partition is maximized.
Trying to get OneKey Recovery to work would be an academic exercise (in futility) as the recovery and image partitions take up valuable space on the SSD and I now have an offline backup / restore method.  Now the laptop is running MUCH FASTER (8 seconds to Metro Screen) and much cooler.  Now it's upgrading to Windows 8.1
    The takeaways from this misadventure:
    1.  Booting with USB Flash Drives simply DOES NOT WORK, and I cannot tell whether the fault lies with with system tools (Microsoft) or the UEFI Firmware (Lenovo) or BOTH.  I was lucky to have a USB hard drive and DVD around.
    2.  Dropping support from CD/DVD Recovery Disc creation from Windows 8.1 is simply taking scissors to a safety net given that booting from USB Flash Drives DO NOT WORK consistently across all hardware, especially ones running UEFI Firmware.
    3.  OKR is nice to have, but not mission criditical if the disk space is limited, especially if alternatives exist.
    4.  Windows native tools for backup and restore DO NOT WORK with this particular Lenovo model and its UEFI Firmware.  I'm pretty sure it doesn't work others from Lenovo or other major brands.  Value Added tools like OKR do not restore on Bare Metal.
    5.  SSDs absolutely ROCK, and the trade-off between speed and storage is well worth it, especially now that storage can be offloaded on to NASs or the cloud.  No mechanical storage issues to worry about (had 2 drives crash within the last month, each dying just after the 2-year warranty expired), runs much cooler, and it's a no brainer - 120GB drives can be found on sale for $60-$70, the crappiest of them will still run many times faster than traditional hard drives.
Bottom Line:  things that SHOULD WORK often DON'T WORK.

  • Can't Create USB Recovery Drive after Win 8.1 upgrade on Lenovo Twist

After upgrading to Win 8.1 and trying to create the usb recovery drive, I get this error:
"We can't create a reccovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing. To trouble shoot problems when your PC starts, use your window installation disk or media"
Can some give me a hint as to how to solve this?Thx.
    Solved!

I contacted Lenovo who sent me out a set of 4 Recovery disks. These disks fixed the problem but it meant wiping out the hard drive and reinstalling very thing from scratch. A new recovery partition is created and the discs reinstalled Win 8 which had to be updated. Then Win 8.1 could be installed. Everything is now working as it should.

  • How to boot from USB flash drive - Portege R500

    Hi,
I have a Portege R500 running Windows XP, brought about 2 years ago, and recently contracted a worm virus that has infected some of the start up files as the minute I log in it logs out again, even in safe mode! Quickest way I can think of sorting it is to reformat it with the XP recovery disc and reinstall windows.
Problem!! The CD/DVD drive on the laptop stopped working a while ago, have tried pretty much everything in the thread on this site but had no luck.
So my plan was to boot from a USB flash drive and do it that way. However in the boot settings I only have the options of HDD / FDD / CD-ROM / LAN, neither of these will work. Does anyone know how to boot from USB flash drives?
Any help would be really appreciated

    Hi
As far as I know it should be possible to boot from USB FDD
Im not sure if you would be able to boot from USB flash drive but its definitely worth a try
Generally you could try to press F12 button when notebook powers up.
Then a boot menu should appear on the display and you should see all bootable devices.
PS: As far as I know the USB booting was available in ToshibaHWSetup (Toshiba tool which changes the BIOS settings in windows OS.) Therefore I assume booting from USB should be possible.

  • Hp usb recovery drive

Hello. I received a USB recovery drive from HP and it didn't work. It went through the motions of installation only to receive a "recovery failed" window at the end and I could save an error log. I called HP and they said to change the date in the bios which I did to 2012. I tried again only to have it fail at recovery attempt again. It produced a .srderror log. Any ideas what to do?

Sometimes the BIOS reverts back to correct date during Recovery. Some posters have solved this by changing date to 2012,Save & Exit-boot with Recovery. After files copy and the laptop goes to the restart- enter BIOS again and check to be sure it is still set to 2012.If not change again Save & Exit-allow recovery to proceed, Hopefully this time will complete.

  • NB100 - How can I reinstall OS from USB flash drive

My TOSHIBA NB 100 notebook does not have CD-DVD drive.
OS is Windows XP Home SP2.
    OS is not booting.
Notebook won't start at all so I cannot run any sort of test when i turn it on.
The we apologize screen come on it says run safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode comand prompt or start windows normally. But no matter which I chose it won't start it only goes to Windows and seems like its starting but then shows the blue Windows screen & stays there.
So I want to reload Windows from my USB flash drive.
The BIOS boot sequence is HDD - FDD - FD - CD - USB Memory.
What are the steps for loading Windows from USB flash drive?
If this does not work then I want to connect another laptop with Windows CD in its CD-DVD drive to the Notebook.
Will this work? Will the Notebook use the Windows CD in the laptop drive to load the OS?
    How to do this connection?

    Hi
Usually you would need an external USB CD/DVD drive in order to boot from the Windows XP disk or Toshiba recovery disk.
But there is a method which allows you to install the Win XP using 2GB USB flash drive.
This is possible because the BIOS of NB100 support the booting from USB memory stick.
    Pease check this internet page:

    Hope it could be helpful.

Hi,disc wiped ,OSX10.9 back on ,how do I restore my data from external hard drive ?Any help welcome .

There's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The cleanest way to do it is Setup Assistant, but you only get that option once when you fire up a fresh install of OSX. If you're past that, you could reinstall OSX by booting with Command-R, or you could use Migration Assistant.

  • I can't restore my bookmarks from portable hard drive, why not?

I backed up my bookmarks through "import and Backup" yesterday as my hard drive had a failure and was being replaced. I now have a new hard drive installed and am trying to restore the bookmarks from my portable drive, but I get "unable to process the backup file". It is a JSON file, bookmarks-2015-02-08.json. Have I now lost every single one of my bookmarks by trying to use the backup procedure? I no longer have access to the failed drive.

Hi, I did try that unsuccessfully, but was able to get them restored by following the link from a previous ask (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/927611). Thanks for the reply.

  • How to restore Windows 8 from a recovery USB on a tablet w/o physical keyboard?

I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad tablet that came with Windows 8 Pro:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD026486
The first thing that I usually do is create a recovery disc. This time I was able to create a recovery USB drive. But then I thought of something -- how would I recover from it?
I asked at the Lenovo community site and people told me to connect a USB keyboard and press Fn + F12 during booting. The issue is that, first, I do not have a physical keyboard for it. Do I really need to pay $50+ just to boot from a USB drive? And
secondly, even if I got a physical keyboard this tablet has only one mini USB port so if I use it up to connect a USB keyboard, how would I connect the USB flash drive?
So can someone clarify this for me? Again, all I need to know is how to restore from a recovery USB drive.

    Hello Again Zubedi35!
Ok, I think I have it covered. First, you need a key to be able to proceed with the installation process. When you get a key, go online and download the windows 8 usb installer to be able to install a properly formatted
installation of windows 8 to your usb drive; make sure you use a windows 7 or windows 8 computer to format and install windows 8 to your usb- very important! Once you have windows 8 installed to your usb drive, all you need is the key and the installation
process on your pc will be a cinch. But before you get ready to do the installation of windows 8 to your desired computer, first you must do one thing- reformat your hard drive again. Since you said you have another computer (preferably a desktop), you may
place the hard drive from your laptop that you are trying to install windows 8 on and place that hard drive into the other computer- but you will need an external device to place the hard drive in to be able to reformat it if you don't have a desktop computer
with an extra bay (slot to put an extra hard drive into) to place the hard drive in and perform the reformatting. I would try to find someone with a desktop that has an extra bay to place that hard drive in and reformat it (it must be a computer with a windows
7 or 8 operating system on it so that you may be able to see the drive and perform the reformatting process. If you choose to do this, you must turn the desktop computer off and open the side of the computer then connect the hard drive to the sata connectors
of the open bay. Then, turn the computer back on and go to 'My Computer' (on windows 7 computer) or click the little folder (File Explorer) on the taskbar and look in 'Devices and Drives' and the hard drive should show up next to the main drive (Local
Disk C:). Formatting your hard drive is just like formatting your usb- just uses a different method of connecting. Try and purchase an external USB Disk Drive to install windows 8 to your pc from a CD if you choose not to go through this process of installation
by usb. I hope this helps and please notify me if you have any other questions or if you need help through the installation process- enjoy your Windows 8 computer!
