Restoring ability to add accent marks by holding down keys

I used to be able to add accent marks by holding down keys. A couple of days ago I lost that function for no apparent reason. I can't find a way to restore it. What should I do?

Try creating a new user account and see if you have the same problem when logged into that.
In the meantime, you can make accents using the standard option key shortcuts as before, e.g. option e, then e gives you é.

I am running OS X 10.8.2 but I cannot pull up special characters (accent marks) by holding down a key as shown here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11264. How do I turn this feature on?

Holding down the e key when you are in TextEdit and using the US keyboard layout does not produce a popup menu like this?

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

  • Question Mark File, Holding Down Option/Alt, Cursor Appears But Usual Icons (HDD) and (Recovery Disk) Do Not

    Hello out there,
My Macbook Pro (coming on 2 years old now) recently had issues with starting up. I found on Apple's website the support forum which stated holding down alt while booting will allow you to choose either your HDD or a Recovery Disk. For the past few reboots I was able to do this, maybe over a 36 hour period (I always chose HDD.) Now, though, when I hold down alt and power on the notebook, only the cursor appears over a gray screen. No icons show up at all. When I press "N" the usual globe across a disk drive blinks. I've also tried to boot up holding down shift but to no avail.
I have a ton of documents that weren't backed up. If I throw in the OS X Leopard disc and reinstall from there, I know I'll lose all my data. Is there anyway Apple could find those files after the reset, or does the Drive just get wiped completely? What do you recommend I should do? Take it into Apple? I don't want to lose these files but I also don't want to pay Apple to do something I can do — put in the original disk and reinstall OS X.
Thanks so much! I owe you a beer! ^_^

Could be more than the power.  HDD could be old, or just the file system on the disk.
    Try ...
Get the external disk, self-powered, at least 2x the current disk
Boot the system from install disks (original) and prepare that disk as two partitions (GUID, with Journaled partitions)
Load the OS onto one of those partitions
Download CarbonCopyClone, and clone the current install disk to the second partition of that external
If the filesystem on the disk or the disk itself is too damaged, copy what you can
You would have a bootable system if nto Lion, with a copy of the data that is on the disk (hopefully).
This is my best advice to at least try to save your data without relying on the internal disk for file operations.  You may yet be SOL, but this is a darned good effort to avoid data loss.
And hope the repair bill does not cover so much that a new system is required.

the most usual issue, the entire trackpad beign disabled while typing is already "fixed" by turning the palm check off entirely. But dont seem to find option that enables the mouse button presses.

  • Holding down keys to repeat their value is no longer working

I'm not even sure where to start looking for the problem. I can type fine one character at a time, but any time I hold down a key, it is not repeated and I have to repeatedly press it manually.

I'm using i3. And you're right, I got it working with xset r on. However, it seems that if I use xset anywhere in my xinitrc, x fails to start without any meaningful error messages, not in the log or in stdout/stderr.

  • Holding down keys on keyboard doesnt repeat

Any ideas how to change this option? When I hold down the arrow keys in a field on a form and it will not scroll. Any key I hold down does not repeat. I have to select delete key 5 times to delete 5 different characters in a row. Is there a setting somewhere that I screwed up?

Check System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard. What is your key repeat rate?

  • No accent marks on the new safari

I am using the european portuguese on my iMac, and now I cannot add accent marks to characters in safari. I have the keyboard Viewer on, but nothing happens?! I just need to put and accent on a "E"... Any help? Thanks!

You can disable it and see if the old option key method works.
    1. Open Terminal.
    2.  Terminal command copy and paste:
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false
    3. Log out of your account for the change to take affect.
If you want this functionality back,  execute the following Terminal & log out.
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

  • Accent marks

in music notation, is there a way to include accent marks or add an effect that makes a note more stronger, sharper, and louder? im creating an intense song that is destined to fail unless articulated at its most. also dynamics, is there a way to include (pp) or (p) or (mp) or (mf) or (f) or (ff) inside notation, or can i change loudness in any way of a particular note or measure? do i need an expansion pack? please help!

    Hi isaih,
You can't add accent marks in GarageBand. You could do that (and a whole lot more) using dedicated notation software like Finale or Sibelius.
However, you can change the loudness of a single MIDI note or any region in Garageband in other ways.
For MIDI, open up the editor (the scissor icon), select the note and change the velocity.
For a region of any kind, you can create a volume curve (type "track automation" or "volume curve" in the help menu for more info on how to do this). Using volume curves, you can make the volume ramp up or down very quickly, or gradually, for any part of your song. By zooming in, you can increase the precision.
No need to buy an expansion pack!

  • Is it possible to add accented or alternate characters to the pop-up lists that appear when holding keys?

I like the ability to press and hold letter keys to get accented and alternate character options, and would like to add even more options.  For example, holding the "D" key does not give any options, despite Đ/đ being used in many languages.  I can type the letter by switching keyboard inputs (in my case, from U.S. to Serbian-Latin and then pressing "]"), but it would be so convenient to just press and hold "D" and then type "1" or click it.
I was thinking it would also be nice to customize the pop-up menus, for example to add Greek letters that are frequently used as mathematical symbols (α for a, δ for d, μ for m, etc), again to save time from going to the Character Viewer or having to remember a bunch of multi-key shortcuts.  Any insight would be great.  I imagine this could be useful to many people.
    Thanks for your time,

  • IOS 8 lockscreen keyboard does not let me input characters with accent marks. My password has an accent mark. I can't restore the device without unlocking it and turning off find my iPod. What can I even do here?

I do have a third party keyboard installed (fleksy), and I removed english and emoji from the keyboards list in settings before rebooting the ipod. When it booted up, it asked for my device password with the default keyboard, but I can't type any letters with accent marks, so I can't enter the password. I figured I could fix this by restoring a backup and changing my password, but I can't restore a backup without turning off Find My iPod - which of course requires me to unlock the device with the device password, which I can't do. Am I stuck here? Is there anything at all that I can do?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • How to make keyboard do accent marks???

Ok. So I just got the Mavericks update. And now when I hold down a letter (in order to add an accent mark to it), it won't work anymore. Does anyone know how to fix this!?!? Because Apple sure doesn't. Please help

I have not moved to Mavericks, all my accents work as before using the option key, so if it has changed, try posting this in the Mavericks or I guess it is this one
    http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/
All the things I have done in the past, previous to Mavericks have worked as normal with the option key and a mod key.
Like I mentioned before I do not as of yet have Mavericks. so I can not advise you in any certainty.
If none of the "normal" option keys work for you, you may want to contact Apple and let them know????

  • Multiple accent marks per character

Is there a way to add more than one accent mark on each character in OS X? I'm creating flash cards in Mental Case and I'm using the accent menu but I can't figure out a way of combining accent marks. For instance one of the words I'm trying to do this for is "cogitare" in Wheelock's book there is an emphasis line over the first ō and another over the á along with an accent mark from from bottom left to top right. From the accent menu you get when holding down a vowl they are 7 and 2 respectively.
    Thanks!

You can't do that using the popup menus of the character picker.  Instead you should activate the US Extended keyboard layout in system prefs/keyboard/input sources.
Once that is done and you have selected US Extended in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen, you can type the long vowel mark by doing option + a, then the vowel.  Then add the acute accent by doing option + shift + e.
    cōgitā́re
Some fonts may not do this well.  Lucida Grande should be good.

  • Customizing accent mark popup toolbar

Hello! I am running 10.9.5. I primarily use English on my machine, but I often use Irish as well. While I find holding a key down and choosing an accent mark simple enough, I would love to customize the popup accent toolbar so the characters I use all the time are in the same position (i.e. to get "é" I currently press e + 2 and for "í" I press i + 3 but I want to press letter + 1 always) to make typing faster and easier. There would be no need to remember that é is 2 and á is 2 but í is 3 and ó and ú are 4. Is there a way to do this? If not: Dear Apple, Please make a way to do this! It would make life so much easier for people using two+ languages! It's crazy that vowels with a right-slanting accent are not the in the same place on each popup toolbar!
    Thanks!!
