Restoring an Emac to original settings - deleting 'me' off it completely

Hi,
I hope someone can help me please! I have an Emac which I am giving to my friend for her job. I have all the discs with it (the original ones it came with). I have put the discs in, followed the instructions etc, BUT my stuff is still on there?! My photos, my passwords etc.
I basically want a really easy step by step (I am VERY NON TECHNICAL!) way of getting everything cleared of the Mac so I can give it to her without my bits on there and how it was when I first bought it. Please make it very easy though, I find all this Mac stuff very confusing when it should probably be very easy!!
PLEASE HELP ME!!

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
If you upgraded from an earlier version of OS X such as Snow Leopard, the procedure you want is not this one. Let me know.

Thanks for the info. I went here earlier, and it didn't help. It seems that the Firefox profile I am using is only the one created today when I reconnected with the browser, and no old one seems available. It's history in all the compartments I go to are all today.

How to restore firefox 15.0.1 to original settings without having to reinstall.
It seems as if FF has been infected with something. Cannot use Google search, click on any links on the results page it always takes me to an ad for revlon make-up.

    You could try this:

  • HT1386 After restoring iPod to its original settings, iTunes will not sync with iPod

I restored my iPod Nano 4th generation to original settings and now when I try to sync it with iTunes, only a few songs will transfer and I get a message saying file could not be found. Some of the songs in my iTunes library were transferrred from another computer and the files somehow did not transfer. However, even the songs I purchased recently will not sync. I have tried downloading the latest version of iTunes and restarting my iPod. Help!

    Hello there, Lefty0706.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great troubleshooting steps for you. I would recommend starting with the "General Installation Troubleshooting":

  • Will restoring my iPod to "original settings" erase all of my music?

The computer that I use for music died, and I plugged my iPod Classic (newest model) into an older computer and I got a message that said iTunes (also newest version) did not recognize my computer and suggested I restore it to the factory settings. Will this erase all of the music on my iPod?

Yes. You will need to use 3rd party software to pull music off the iPod, if recoverable, before you do a factory restore. I personally recommend iGadget (for PCs).

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I want to restore my iMac to original settings. Help needed

    Alright guys.
I am going to sell my iMac, therefore I would like to restore it to factory settings. However I have lost the discs that came with it.
I have been having a look online for replacment but there are a few different options and I want to make sure that I purchase the correct version.
I believe the model number for my Mac is MB323LL/A.
On the online spec it says it is installed with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.
Does it have to be restored with this exact version, or is the 10.6 version ok? Also, I've seen that there are a few differnt variations of intsall disc, so I'm a little confused.
If anyone could point me in the right direction then that would be great.
    Thanks very much

Call Apple and request a replacement install DVD. It is part of the Mac and should be included when you sell it. They will charge a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

    Help me please!!!!

    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • HT1296 All my photos from my computer were copied over to my phone and I don't know how to delete them from my phone.  Has anyone had this problem who might now how to fix it without restoring the iphone or resetting it to the original settings?

  • I had to restore my computer to its original settings after a crash. I backed up my files before hand so I didn't lose data in memory. When I ran Firefox from it, my bookmarks are gone. How can I get them back if I can?

My computer had trouble starting for a long time. Taking it to the shop didn't help. Today it just wouldn't start at all. In a desperation move I restored it to its original settings as if I just bought it. I chose the backup files version so that I didn't lose any data in memory, though I do have to restore some settings. When I ran Firefox all my bookmarks are gone. Everything is in the My Backup folder. How can I get my bookmarks back if I can?

As always, iphone will sync with one comptuer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.
The backup that itunes performs does not include any itunes content.  You should keep everything on your computer and should always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • Restoring phone profiles to factory settings

I realized that I tinkered a little too much with my phone profiles and wanted to restore them to their original settings.  However I don't want to restore all my custom settings, just the phone profiles.  But I can't figure out if there's a way to do this.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi forgotmynick,
Could you please clarify what you are trying to do? Clearing the Profiles or Sounds database from your BlackBerry® Curve™ 8520 smartphone should clear out the notification settings you had configured. What is happening when you do this? Are you receiving any error messages?
    Thanks.
