Restoring an ipod mini

Hello all.
My ipod mini (4 GB) first generation shows a folder icon with an exclamation mark, so I have to restore or format it. Previously it work fined, but I once disconnected it when it says "do not dicconnect".
Then after that, it shows the folder icon everytime i switched on.
I then reset the ipod mini and switched to disk mode.
Then i run the Updater (2005-6-26) and connect the ipod mini to the computer using a USB 2.0 port. The computer detected the device and near the taskbar, it says "Found new hardware". Then it tries to install the hardware, but it said "hardware installation failed, the device might not work properly". During the process, the ipod shows the message "do not disconnect", then after a few seconds, the ipod auto resets itself and shows up the Apple logo.
The updater then said "Can't mount ipod".
The ipod has a fully charge battery (the battery icon is full) .
Anyone has idea for fixing this?
I would appreciate it very much.
By the way, I using Windows XP Professional Service pack 2.

I have recently rebuilt by computer and had to re-install my itunes. When i connect my ipod mini it is asking me to restore my ipod. When I do so I am getting a "Formatting Failure- Disk write error" message each time I try. Anybody have any help they can send my way. Thanks

More often than not this is a usb connection error. Have you tried other ports? If possible also try another cable.

  • Restoring an iPod Mini-What does this do?

I've posted a few questions due to the fact that my Mini no longer updates when I plug it into my Mac. It charges but the icon doesn't appear on the desktop and iTunes does recognize my iPod. (Though I've been putting that off awaiting a miracle.)
Anyway nothing seems working and the only thing I haven't tried is "Restore". I know this is basically a reset on the iPod; that it returns to the state it was in when it left the factory. Least that's the idea.
My question is how is restoring done? If my computer isn't recognizing my iPod, will I be able to restore it? From the little bit of research I've done, it looks like you go through the computer's utilities. If this is so, am I boned anyway?

  • I can't restore my ipod mini

I get an error message saying "corrupt, needs to be restored" It will start restoring, but then I get "unable to restore, application is being used in another file" (or something similiar) I have gone through the 5 r's, system management, changing drives, installer the cleaner, deleting 7.2 itunes and replacing it with older version, anything I could read on your website. It has always shown up as a device, however, when I try to right click on the device under my computer, my computer completely freezes up. I searched for ipod folders and deleted them to try to start over. I am at my wits end- and have stayed up all night last night and today trying to figure it out. Please help!

  • ITunes can't restore iPod mini

I had to restart the player in disk mode to be able to connect it/see it in iTunes. When attempting to restore my iPod mini 4GB, iTunes 9.1 (79) lies saying that the player 'cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application.' This player was loaded 3 years ago. The computer is a Mac mini PPC 1.25 now using OS 10.4.11. iTunes is unable to access the playlist. Since I'm not sure erasing the iPod with Disk Utility would do any good, please advise. Fernando

    Hello macarra,
Have you tried resetting your iPod first and then re-attempted to restore it via iTunes? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Menu and Select (Center) buttons together for a couple of seconds until the Apple logo appears.

  • Cant Restore ipod mini

My Ipod mini has the folder with an exclamation point icon on it and I have tried all the solutions apple provided and none have worked to solve the problem. So I tried to restore my ipod mini and even that didnt work. I switch my ipod mini into disk mode so that the ipod updater software can recognize it but as soon as the updater software connects to the ipod mini, the ipod then restarts itself and the updater software is no longer connected to the ipod and goves me the error "cant mount ipod". I have tried restoring it several different times on different USB ports several times. I am stumped and have no idea how to solve this problem and help would be appreciated.

If your iPod is recognized in Explorer, close the updater program and try this.
Click on start/control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say “M”, or something similar.
A drive letter conflict can sometimes cause the 'can't mount iPod' message.
    Then try the restore again.

Would you care to give us any more info to work with?
There was a virus on my computer and somehow, all the songs on my iPod were deleted. When I plug my iPod mini in, the computer still recognizes it and says it has used a certain number of gygabites, but there are no songs. I asked a question about this before and you told me to restore my iPod so I could put all the songs back on from before. I clicked on the link on the apple website to restore it and went through the steps and it prompted me to restart my computer so the new hardware could take effect. I restarted it, but then nothing happened. I plugged the iPod in thinking it would be restored, but it still does the same thing. Any ideas?

  • Ipod Mini starts to sync then stops after a few songs and doesn't sync

It has been about a year since I synced my iPod mini (Generation One) with my G3 PowerBook Pismo. I have been using it with no problems but I wanted to ad new songs. I went to sync it and it wanted to update. I am on the latest iTunes. After the iPod updated it would start to sync get to song 7 and just stop syncing. I have to pull the iPod off and there is nothing on it. I have restored the iPod Mini several time. I even tried going back to the orginal disk. Nothing helps. I tried to repair disk permissions in Disk Utilities and that gets about half way through then has an error. I have to quit this operation and can't repair the permissions. Could these be related. I am not a mac doof but I feel like one.
    Thanks for any help!!!

Try taking it into an Apple store, it sounds like a HD problem, or something. If you've tried to restore it, and that hasn't worked, taking it in is probably your best bet.

  • Transfer songs from a ipod mini that was created from another account

I bought a used ipod mini that came loaded with over 400 songs which I would like to add to my itunes MAC account. The ipod mini is in Windows format and I understand that at sometime in the future I will have to restore the ipod mini in order to convert the device from Windows to MAC format thereby losing all the songs and data that are currently on the ipod. My itunes level is 7.6.1. I am running OS X 10.4.5.
Is there any way to transfer or upload the songs from this device to my IMAC itunes account even though the songs were purchased and downloaded to the device by the original owner using his Windows itunes account.
    Thank You.

Since you did not purchase the songs, they are not legally yours to keep.

  • IPod Mini's select button only works to perform reset

I have a first generation iPod Mini which has an unresponsive select button. It will only function to reset the Mini (Menu + Select).
I have restored the iPod Mini with both the June 2006 iPod Updater and iTunes 7.0.2, and performed many a reset. Nothing appears to have helped.
    Any ideas?

    "i bought a broken mini"
You knew it was broken when you bought it - You really have no-one to blame but yourself.
At any rate... You might try a third party repair service. I see ipodresq recommended on these forums quite a bit.
    Good luck.
    Cheers!

  • Ipod Mini Reset

I have attempted to restore my Ipod mini to factory settings, now the display has an icon of an AC wall charger showing on it. This means I have to plug the Ipod into the wall charger to complete the Restore....PROBLEM, I do not have a wall charger...only the cradle with USB port which is pluged to my IMac - QUESTION: Is there any way to by pass this step without the wall charger ?
    Thanks,
    Clueless IPOD Owner.

Most iMacs have a 6-pin FireWire port; plug the iPod to your computer with a FireWire cable to complete the process. If your computer doesn't have a working FireWire port, you can use a car adaptor to complete the update process.
Early iMacs did not include FireWire ports, but Mac OS X 10.4 will not install on them without the use of XPostFacto.

  • Ipod mini won't update anymnore

One day I plugged my iPod Mini into my PC and there a pop up says "itunes.exe - Corrupt File". I looked at the article and it didn't really help. I updated my iTunes and iPod software, it is still corrupted and now iTunes 7 tells me I can't update any songs until it is fixed.
It suggests me to restore, but here's the problem:
I don't have any files on my Library, I put the songs on my iPod Mini and delete the song on my library.
Can anyone help me with back up my song files before I restore my iPod Mini?
    Please help me! =(

hi there. i truly wish i had an answer for you....unfortunetely im stuck in the same situation and came looking here to see if anyone had a solution. if you find out the answer do you think you could let me know too?
now ive heard a rumor that theres some website that if you pay money it will keep a record of the songs either on your ipod or in your library. im not too sure which one tho. that way if they somehow become deleted youll always have a backup of your songs on your comp. i guess just google it and find out first before you update software. ive done it before and it will wipe away ALLLLLLL of your songs and now ive had to start from scratch. and its telling me that i might have to update software again due to this corrupt file.
anyway i hope that helps and again if you find out anything please let me know!!!!
    thanks, kim

Second, my computer wont recognize my ipod anymore. Everytime i plug it into my USB, nothing shows up on my pc.. iTunes doesnt recognize it and neither does the ipod updater.

I would appreciate any help! Thanks!

    Hi there,
I got the same problem as els1017 from time to time - the computer doesn't recognise the ipod mini after connection, but after a while (about 3-5 min), the notebk computer recongnises the ipod mini & charges it. i worried that my ipod mini is "dead" already everytime the computer can't recongnise it.
Any idea on the normal time for the computer to recongise the ipod after connection? i hv this ipod mini last june (still less than 1 yr), can i make the computer to realise the ipod mini faster?
    tks...pmwcheung
Connect your iPod to your computer. Wait for the
iPod to realize it is connected to a computer. Then,
open My Computer, and see if there is an Apple iPod
or Removable Disk listed under "Devices with
    Removable Storage."
    Let me know what happens!
