Restoring an iPod on version 4.8 of iTunes

Have a problem with iTunes when trying to optimize album artwork (error message -2003). Seems to be timing out two thirds of the way into each update, after roughly about 5 minutes.
Wouldn't mind trying to restore my iPod to try and fix the problem but would like some help/reassurances before I do.
Do I really have to update iTunes to the dreaded version 7.0? Or can I simply restore and then keep my existing tried and tested version 4.8? The instructions on this site for version 7.0 mention a summary tab which doesn't seem to exist in the good ol' version that I have.
Any ideas if I can still restore without having to risk my existing 6000+ songs, playlists and ratings?
Or even better, has anyone out there even begun to fathom out how us poor people, and there doesn't half seem a lot of us, who are experiencing artwork problems, can finally put this one to bed?

The minimum requirement of iTunes version for 60G iPod Photo is 4.7.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60971
So, you can do it with iTunes 4.7, but the iPod updater version should be matched with it.
One thing - there is always a risk for doing Restore. Therefore, you should back up all data on your iPod before doing the Restore

  • Why can't I restore my ipod touch version 2?  Error 1604?

How can I restore my Ipod Touch, version 2, ios 4.2.1?  I tried to do an original restore from ITunes.  It erased all of my files.  The Ipod now sits there with a screen suggesting to plug it into ITunes.  It is plugged in!  Itunes doesn't even recognize it as a "device".
I was able to repeat the process several times, by unplugging it, re-starting ITunes, and re-running the original restore.
I got the following message, "The Ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)."  I went to the "More Information" section, but none of the suggestions applied to me.
In this condition it is totally unusable!

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

  • HT1339 I was looking for info on restoring an iPod Touch 4th Gen. But iTunes presents the same Restore button, which when pressed, offers to update, not restore, to iOS 6.0.1. Why?

I found this article when searching for info on restoring (to factory conditions) an iPod Touch 4th Generation. Now I thought this shipped with iOS 5.x (x unknown). But as mentioned too briefly in the header, when I click 'Restore' in iTunes, it offers not to restore, but to update. That is not what I want. I need to use this iPod Touch with Xcode 4.2 under Snow Leopard.
So the question is: what is really going on here and why? Is it really true that 4th G iPod Touches ship with 6.0.1 instead of 5.x? If not, how can I get it to really go back to the original? Why is iTunes failing to offer a restore when I press 'Restore'? If I guessed wrong about which of my several machines running iTunes (some under Windows7, one under Snow Leopard)I used when I upgraded to iOS 6.0.1, would that explain iTune's failure to offer a true Restore?

Restore will not replace an old iOS level. It will update the iOS level to the latest level. If you have to restore youre iPod that is what will happen. The iOS is not a part of a backup.

  • Is there anyway to restore my ipod without erasing everything in my itunes?

Is there anyway to restore my ipod and not erase everything in my itunes?

"Everything in your iTunes" is on your computer (or should be). So a restore will delete the content of the iPod and then the next Sync will put back the contents of your iTunes Library onto your iPod.
iTunes on your iPod is the iTunes Store.
So a restore will not delete everything in your iTunes, is simply deletes the content on your iPod (which is not the same thing).
If you have music on your iPod that is not in your iTunes Library, you will lose it unless you transfer it to your computer or back it up first.

  • My ipod gives me the message " Use Itunes to restore " What do i do?

I gave it to someone for servicing, not only did he not do the job but now it comes back with this message " Use Itunes to restore "

Sorry, what is the iPod Software version as shown in iTunes summary page? (1.1.2 or 2.0.4)
According to this post, earlier version of iPods cant paly Rented Movies
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/6555233#6555233
Only SD movies can be played in most iPod, so select the Rented movie in iTunes, GetInfo and see it matches other movies that can play in your iPod.
So using iTunes,  converting the Rented Movies to iPod version may work.
There have been reports in these discussion pages that iTunes 10.6 does gives problems with New movies download, if you have the latest iPod Classic software 2.0.4, but downgrading back to 10.5 may help.
    Have a nice day!

  • Ipod touch stuck on 'connect to itunes' - Restore is not working

We've got an Ipod touch (no idea on generation) that we were trying to sync some apps to from a laptop (not mac), they wouldn't sync so we tried resetting the ipod and syncing everything together. After resetting when we tried to access the ipod on itunes it just came up with 'could not connect to itunes store' (where we are it is currently blocked) which meant that we could not access the ipod via itunes in any way and then ipod was then stuck on the 'connect to itunes' screen.
We tried turning both it and laptop off and on again, disconnecting etc. Then tried the restore using the home and on/off button which triggered the restore via itunes by putting it into recovery mode and it downloads everything fine but the ipod still remains on the connected to itunes screen - we've now tried restoring it 4 or 5 times.
I was confused as to why the ipod wanted to connect to the itunes store in the first place because it has never asked to do so before and as it is blocked here then for every sync before this it has not been connected nor has it wanted to be. Perhaps it's to do with the apps? But there are apps already on the ipad. Perhaps taking the laptop and ipod to somewhere with wireless where the itunes store isn't blocked will allow us to access the ipod and restore/reset/sync and that will fix the issue?
We're loathe to take it all the way to the nearest apple shop, especially on a wet Sunday, just for them to tell us that their only advice is to trigger the recovery mode which we know doesn't work! So any other advice is much appreciated.
Just to clarify, we have been through recovery mode 4 or 5 times and done a full restore on it, with it downloading all the software and firmware and it hasn't worked.

To restore an iPod an internet connection to the iTunes store is is required. iTunes on the computer has to g to the Apple server to verify that it is using the latest firmware update.

  • How can i restore my ipod touch 4g (?) without passcode or itunes

Hi and thank you for helping as this is urgent.
I forgot my passcode for my iPod, and guessed it to many times so it got disabled.
The problem is I don't have iTunes and can't get it on my laptop, but need to restore my device. Right now on the screen it has a photo of a USB cord, an arrow, and the iTunes symbol. So, how can I restore my iPod touch without my passcode or iTunes?
    Thank you SO much.

Right now you can't without a computer. Once you get to a computer you can restore it using DFU mode.

Sorry but no. The only way to restore an iPod to factory settings is through iTunes on a computer. You will need to get access to a computer somehow. If you can get to an Apple Store, they can probably help you.

  • Restoring new ipod

as soon as I plug in they ipod it tells me that itunes cannot read the content. itunes then automatically takes me to the summary page and says for me to click on restore to restor the ipod - which I do but then itunes tells me that it could not contact the ipod software update server because I'm not connected to the internet - which is more bull....what do I do? this is very frustrating. I've removed and reinstalled itunes....what next?

Have you had a look at this page?. It may be of some help: iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server

  • Which iPod software version ?

    Hi,
I just bought the Nike+ iPod, was very excited to use it this WE, but didn't manage to make it work !! It seems that the receiver does not detect the sensor. My iPod nano 3rd gen is running on the iPod sotfware version 1.1, and iTunes says that this is the latest version. But on the user guide of the Nike+ iPod it is said that the iPod should run with the latest iPod software, which is 1.2
    Who should I trust ?
Which version of the software is running on your iPod ?
    Thanks for your help, Alexis

    Hi,
Me again ! I went back to the store and found the solution : when you look in details to the config requirements, there are not all the same. If you want to use the Nike+ sensor with a 3rd generation iPod nano, it should be stated on the package : "requires iPod nano with software v1.3 or iPod nano (aluminium) with version 1.1 or later". It seems that the first I get from the store was from an older stock. With a recent one, it works perfectly.
By the way, I now know the distance from my favorite sport shop to my office !
    Cheers, Alexis
