Restoring backed up files to new laptop hard drive

I recently upgraded from 10.3 to 10.5 (skipping Tiger), all the while backing up to an external Maxtor drive. Then my hard drive started dying. So I bought a new hard drive and put it in an external 800 FW enclosure. I formatted the new drive and installed 10.5, by-passing the dying drive but using the install CD. Then I installed the new drive into my laptop. Now I want to copy the backed up files on my Maxtor HD onto the new hard drive. I've spoken to an Apple guy, couldn't help. Went to Genius Bar, got wrong advice. Went to Maxtor web site, couldn't find answer. I have used the application "Backup" that came with 10.3 while doing backups; continued using this after upgrading to 10.5. Have not used Time Machine! I was able to copy and paste from the old drive which I put into the external enclosure, but couldn't read all the files. Home folder wasn't even listed. All my iTunes library is on Maxtor, but can't get to it. Need help on this, please!

I believe that Apple's "Backup" application uses a special storage scheme that normaly requires Apple Backup to restore the backup items. There may be a problem, though, because your screenshot shows the backup items as ordinary folders. I don't use Backup any more, but I have some old storage items made with Backup 3, and my full and incremental backup items look like single files in Finder. They actually are packages, "special" folders with the same internal structure as the one you posted, but which look like single files in Finder. Maybe you used an earlier version of Backup that creates folders instead of package files.
I don't know if Backup 3 will be able to open and use the "normal-looking" folders that you do have, but it's worth a try. If you don't have Backup 3 on your current Leopard installation, you can download it at

You need a MobileMe subscription to make new backups, but I think you can restore old backups even without a subscription. There is a Help menu in Backup 3 which includes instructions on how to restore things when you no longer have the backup plan used to make the backups. You would normally use Backup 3 to open the most recent IncrementalBackup file if there is one, otherwise the FullBackup file. In your situation I would try to open the folder with those names, not the folder contents.
If this doesn't work try double-clicking the "backup.sparseimage" files in the Folder>Contents>Contents subfolders. If the disk image mounts, look inside the mounted disk for your stuff and drag the contents back to your internal HD. Don't try to restore "settings", just datafiles.

This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....." You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL.

Can Time Machine Be Used to Back Up Files from An External Hard Drive?

Please let me provide a little more information to clarify the question.
The hard drive on my computer is not large enough for all my photo and video files so I am planning to purchase a new external hard drive and move my "Pictures" and "Movies" folders to the new external hard drive as a way of freeing up space on my computer. A different external hard drive is now used for backup of the computer's hard drive.
My question is about how backups will be handled if I upgrade to Snow Leopard.
I understand that Time Machine will take the place of the software now being used to back up the MacHD, but back up is still needed for the photo and video files which would be moved off of the MacHD. Will Time Machine back up those files too? That is, will Time Machine back up specified folders which are being stored on one external hard drive and place the backups on a different external hard drive? And, will Time Machine do that in addition to backing up the MacHD? If so, are separate partitions needed for the MacHD and the Photo/Video backups, or will Time Machine put everything in the same partition?
Any advice and/or suggestions for handling this in would be most appreciated.

Having trouble restoring old files from an external Time Machine back-up to a new internal hard drive...HELP!

O.k. So my main hard drive died on my iMac and I had to replace it. I have my old system backed up on my external with Time Machine. How do I access it to get my old files back on my new hard drive? I have read multiple forums and I have yet to find a solution. I was told that when I first turn the computer on and get to the third screen, it would ask me if I wanted to restore from a previous back-up. It did but it didn't show my external until I went through the set-up and got to my home screen. The drive showed then. It also asked to install updates...and I did. So everything is up to date. I have not turned time machine on yet because I'm affraid that if I do, it will erase my old back-up on my external. I tried using the Migration Assistant in Utilities and all I get is the spinning wheel when I tried to get that to work. So now I am here asking for help. I'm not very hopeful that I'm going to be able to get all of my old files back... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the video link. I did it pretty much exactly the way the young man explained. The one thing I didn't do was click "customize" as he does and unclick the multiple language support and he also clicks "rosetta" to support older programs. I wonder if that's the issue? The guys at Macmall told me that I would need to update the o.s. before I restored. I did that originally but have since (as mentioned before) erased the main drive. I noticed that when he does his install, his external drive does not show up on the list in which you want to install the o.s. on... should I unplug my external? I'm just trying to look at ever detail. I know the recovery file is there. The one thing it (the external) did say before I started posting here was "in progress". I'm not sure what that means? I promise I'm not an idiot. I consider myself an above average user. I usually help other that have issues... but I've yet to restore from a Time Machine back-up and I'm looking forward to learning how to do it.... the right way. I appreciate all of the advice. I have some pretty important files on my external back-up. I am really hoping that this is possible. I'm beginning to think the external is where the issue lies. While the above sorts you out for a one time transfer this is what I would recommend...
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.

Can't locate restored files on new iMac Hard Drive

My hard drive failed on my iMac (Intel), Apple Store replaced the hard drive, brought it home, hooked up the Time Machine, selected a backup date, restore... it showed the content loading for 4 hours... once complete, the iMac still looks nothing like the old. Open the Macintosh HD and Info shows that the 230 GB transferred, but I can't find the folders anywhere. When actually opening the Macintosh HD, its only new folders and the new setup. Where do I find the restored content?

How do I back up file on external Portable Hard drive

I recently dropped my laptop on the floor doing damage to the screen. I took it to Apple store and they were able to back my hard drive onto an external hard drive. It has been a couple weeks since then and I would like to update all the files since the last back up. Does anyone know how to do this.

Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
10. MimMac (Shareware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Macbook Pro Freezing, Can't back up files either to external hard drive either..

I'm not entirely sure what happened but my Macbook Pro, (Lion/Mac OS X 10.7.5) just started to freeze a lot. I can hardly browse the web or sometimes browse folders. In some ocassions its even difficult to check the Activity monitor or go to Disk Utitlity. I always see the rainbow beach ball of death and in the force quit window I see the red "Not responding."
Because of this issue, I plan on taking my Macbook Pro to Apple but the problem is I can't even back up my files. I just started a time machine and it goes well until in the middle of the transfer it says:
"The backup was not performed because an error occured while copying files to the back up disk.
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
so I tried a different ext. hard drive and still, it says the same message. Upon being fed up of the situation, I attempted to do the old school copy paste from drive to drive but again, in the middle of the transfer it stops and gives me a a differnet message:
"The finder can't complete the operation because some data in ____ can't be read or written."
I checked the file and its a .MOV a video file from my DSLR. I skipped this file and then again, it said the exact same message on a different video file. I can't just avoid these video files. I'm actually a film maker and all this clips are in desparately in need to be backed up.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Atleast backing up the files..

Not sure if this is related -- since my Macbook Pro has been running slow I deleted a couple of apps such as Things, DaVinci Resolve and FrameForge Previz.. Which to led to having my spolight indexing. I thought it was only the index thats making it run slow but the index done now and I can't back up my files!

Can I back-up files to a portable hard drive and not use Time Machine?

I have a portable hard drive that I use for all of my Time Machine back-ups. I back-up the entire system every two or three weeks. I use the Time Machine software and it works quite well. I'm interested in backing up specific files (photos, documents, etc.) to a second portable drive every six months but I don't want to use the Time Machine software. Is there a simple way to hook up the portable drive (brand new Lacie 500 gb drive), open up the file on my desktop and drag the files to the new drive? Are there special steps I need to perform to avoid formatting the drive for Time Machine? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

You can do that, but you'll have to erase the drive, or delete the previous versions, each time. You might want to look at CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. They're most often used to make full bootable "clones" of your internal HD, but can be set to back up specific files and folders as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while before sending them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but I think you'll need the paid one (about $30, I think) to do this.

How do I get back my files from an erased hard drive? (disk utility)

Under the advice of another Mac user, I used the Disk Utility application to 'erase' and reformat my MacBook Pro to 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' so that I could copy files that were on my MB to my hard drive and it erased everything on my hard drive.
I am now panicking. How do I get all my files, documents, videos and photos that were on my hard drive back? I saw that there was a 'restore' option iin Disk Utility but I have no idea what it is or how to use it... I reallly need some help!!!

It won't help, but here is an explanation:
The Restore functions in Disk Utility (in Mac OS X 10.3 and later) let you create a clone of your disk. The system software can be replaced and therefore restored by a previously created disk image using this option. Normally, using disk images or Disk Utility's Restore functions will destroy data on a destination disk, by overwriting data from an original source disk.

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”

If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
