Restoring backed-up FileVault images

I upgraded from an iBook G3 to a MacBook Pro about a year ago. I used FileVault on the G3, and each time I upgraded to a new OS I backed up my data by copying the .sparseimage disk image to an external drive.
I discovered this week that there were still some files I needed to recover from one of these encrypted images. I couldn't remember the exact procedure I used previously to remount these images. If I copy the images to my Mini and double-click them, I get a password dialog, but neither the old account password or the old master password seem to work. Do I need to put them back on the iBook? Mount them some other way on the command line? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Do I simply replace the folders for each application or is there another course of action that is ideal to restore the information?
Should work, but check the Help files for those two apps. In the future, you might want to consider making bootable backups/clones before embarking on upgrading or updating. Details in

Have a MacBook Pro running Lion (10.7.9) and an IMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Want to Back up both images and restore on opposite machines. Essentially swapping images between hard drives. Is this possible and any "gotcha's" to look for? Thanks

If the MBP came with Lion, it most likely won't boot with SL. Easiest thing to do is create a bootable backup/clone of each to an ext HD, partitioned to hold each on a separate volume, ensure that the original machines can boot with their respective clones, and finally, try booting the other machine with the other clone. Images are useless since you can't boot with them to test them out.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

  • What is the best method to revert back to 'golden' image of database

    Hello,
I want to have a 'golden' image of my test database. What is the best method to keep reverting back to this 'golden' image after testers are done with testing. What I mean is I want to set up a test database for testers. Testers can insert, update, delete on objects as they like. But after the testers have completed their testing, I want to revert the database back to the 'golden' image. This 'golden' image is the state of the database before testers perform their tests. I need to revert back to the 'golden' image many times over as we have to perform many different tests.
I thought about export and import (9i database) but takes 6 hours, too long. I tried using rman and was successful the first time, (set until time; restore database; recover database; open resetlogs;). The seconde time using rman, I got error saying the set until time was before the resetlogs time. I think I would have to restore the control file before the resetlog time frame before I can recover to the set until time, again.
What is a straight forward method to have a 'golden' image so I can keep on restoring back to it? This database is a test 9i database and it is in archive log mode but it doesn't need to be. I just need a best practice method, whether it is rman, exp/imp, manual backup/restore? Something I can use time and time over again. Thank you.

If it is a Test envionment, can you just take a COLD Backup (database files
plus control files) ? How big is the database ? What platform is it on ?
    eg in a COLD Backup
    a. If using a script, run multiple "cp" (or cpio/tar) commands in parallel to
    copy different database files
    b. If using RMAN (in NOMOUNT), use multiple Chnanels.
Note : Remember to include ControlFile Backups and Restores as well.

  • SuperDuper to restore backed up system

    Hi,
I know I have read that you can restore your computer from the dvd(s) that come with your computer, and also using Time Machine during the process. Seems good, and I'd like to try it.
However, I'd like to know as a failsafe, in case of a problem with either of the above, if you have an external drive, and a bootable copy (using SuperDuper - I can boot from it., can you do a full restore using SuperDuper from the usb/firewire drive partition to the live partition? Let's say I load up from the installable media, can you restore from SuperDuper then, or how about just a function to restore back from the SuperDuper external drive?
If you can't do this from SuperDuper is there another way to do this? From windows, you could use Acronis , boot from the cd, then invoke restore and restore back the image from an external drive.
    Thank you
    Craig

    Hi Craig,
Yes, I think SD is what you're after. It's free for cloning and there's a small purchase fee if you want to use the backup feature. I use it and think it's well worth it.
This will make a bootable clone on an external drive ( I'd choose firewire). That way if something happens to your internal drive you can boot up from the clone and keep right on working until you have the time to repair it or just erase it and clone the external system back. You can also use it to run utilities on your internal. A lot faster than from optical disc. In fact, you should never have to use the install disks again.

I believe because you migrated from a Nokia to an iPhone you need to register the Bn phone number with your Apple ID so it can be used for iMessage. The Pn number seems to be the only one registered

  • How can i get my icloud restored back to a previous date

Does anyone know how I can get my icloud restored back to a week ago?  My two separate apple iPhones had their iCloud accounts merged and I got my personal accounts and work accounts merged.  When trying to split them back up again, I deleted all my contacts on icloud and now I can't get them back.  can i get my icloud restored?  I restored my phone, but that didn't work.  Thanks for your help.

A partition is just a section of the disk set aside for a particular purpose. In this case, we're talking about a Mac partition and a Windows partition. They have different formats, which is how the data is stored. The disks that came with your Mac will create the Mac partition when you install, but most likely you'll lose the Windows partition. You've got kind of a mess at this point. What you should do is install the Mac OS and get everything as you want it. Then run Bootcamp to create a Windows partition and let Bootcamp do the Windows installation for you. Grant gave you good advice earlier. Don't let Windows do any partitioning. That's how you got into this mess.

  • If I want to restore back to snow leopard

I've had it with Lion. I want to restore Leopard. I have never use the backup utilities in Leopard, but I have backed up what I need to manually to another drive. What I want to ask about is app store purchases and itunes purchases and bookmarks. After I do a full restore of Leopard, basically back to "new out of the box" iMac, I have a few questions:
    1. Do I need to use the same user account when first time signing onto my iMac?
    2. After all the updates are applied for Leopard, can I simple sign back into the "iMac app store" and see all my old purchases and simply reinstall them?
    3. iTunes... I keep all my media files on an external USB hard drive for iTunes. Can I simply sign into iTunes with my account and "change back" the iTunes default media location in prefferences back to that external location, and have iTunes find and re apply everything just as it was before?
    4. I was told there is a file "Bookmarks.plist" that I can first backup, then after the full restore back to Leopard, I can simply copy back that Bookmarks.plist file and get all my bookmarks back? I know you can do an bookmarks export from safari, but I was told backing up your Bookmarks.plist files does the same thing, only slicker and better?
    5. My iCal is synced to my iPhone. Would my iPhone sync back all the events to the iCal? Can I use the iPhone to sync back info to the system?
Or do I need to first backup the iCal data somehow, also?
    6. Stickies... I believe I can backup the stickeis database file, then restore it and all my stickies notes will be intacked?
    7. Im also wondering about 3rd party software i've purchased, if that can be reinstalled and would the original activation or register codes or keys still work?
The same with "MS OFFICE for the iMac" and "PARALLELS", would their ownership register codes work as if I were simply reinstalling the program back onto the same old machine? Or would these 3rd party programs purchased with register codes think I was trying to install on a completely different system? Thus the original codes might not accept?
So thats my only real concerns...
Using the same user info when starting up my fully restored system for the first time?
Reinstalling already purchases iMac app-store items?
Re-installing 3rd party purchased software that will ask for the original activation or register code. WIll they still work?

  • Hi,  Had boot issue and got the following from DU repair function on Macintosh hd: updating boot support.....Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk.....reformat and restore backed up files. How is that done or do I go to Genius?

In reference to question the computer gave no warning but lost internet connectivity.  I shut down for a while and when returned it would only boot to gray logo screen with spinning gear.  Ran disk utility and on Mac HD drive it stopped after "Updating boot support partitions as required". Then in red: Error: Disk utility can' repair this disk ....disk, and restore backed up files.   I'm running OS X 10.8 and had just updated the iOS about three days ago.  Not familiar with reformat process on MacBook Pro and would like some ideas whether I should go to the Genius Bar here in Sydney or try it on my own.   I have been using time machine to back up to a 1TB La Cie drive right up to the crash.   Thanks for any advice.

Well it turned out the drive was shot.  Took it to the genius bar yesterday and they ran a test on the drive before trying the restore routine again.  Drive failed.
Replaced the drive and got the MBP back today.  Pretty quick and decent service once you get an appointment.
Now having trouble figuring how to do the Time Machine  saved files.  Have several applications which I'd like to keep but not sure how to trans the apps from my backup to the new.  Hunting for answers on that on the web.
    Thanks for you help, Eustace.
