Restoring backed-up iweb

Hi guys,
I need some advice! I recently bought a 1TB firewire drive to back up all my big files to. I used it to make a clean copy of my internal HD using super duper, then installed the OS and wiped my internal HD so I could start afresh.
Rather unwisely, I didn't use iweb backup to store my iweb sites, though all the file structure and files are there on my external HD. I need to restore the old iweb as I edit all my sites on it. I have used time machine to do periodic backups on another 250GB firewire drive, so perhaps that would be a help? Ideally I would be able to get my iweb to the stage it was at when I backed up to the 1TB drive though. Is this possible? One idea I had was creating a disk image of my backup and maybe booting from that, though i don't know whether that's possible or how it's done exactly.
Please can someone give me some tips?
Many thanks!
Ben

Ben ~ iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). See this Apple doc:
_iWeb ’08: Backing up your Domain file_

The Domain file has a hidden file extension of ".sites2" — so you could search for that. See this Apple doc:
Recovering items using Time Machine and Spotlight
But Spotlight doesn't look in all areas of the hard drive — so if no luck, download and run Find File to search for ".sites2".

I believe because you migrated from a Nokia to an iPhone you need to register the Bn phone number with your Apple ID so it can be used for iMessage. The Pn number seems to be the only one registered

Manage your Apple ID and see if that does the trick

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

  • How can i get my icloud restored back to a previous date

Does anyone know how I can get my icloud restored back to a week ago?  My two separate apple iPhones had their iCloud accounts merged and I got my personal accounts and work accounts merged.  When trying to split them back up again, I deleted all my contacts on icloud and now I can't get them back.  can i get my icloud restored?  I restored my phone, but that didn't work.  Thanks for your help.

A partition is just a section of the disk set aside for a particular purpose. In this case, we're talking about a Mac partition and a Windows partition. They have different formats, which is how the data is stored. The disks that came with your Mac will create the Mac partition when you install, but most likely you'll lose the Windows partition. You've got kind of a mess at this point. What you should do is install the Mac OS and get everything as you want it. Then run Bootcamp to create a Windows partition and let Bootcamp do the Windows installation for you. Grant gave you good advice earlier. Don't let Windows do any partitioning. That's how you got into this mess.

  • Can you export a published iweb website back into iweb?

I have created my own iweb website which I uploaded to my own domain using transmit. Since creating the page, I had a had drive die on me that I can't access and don't have my site in iweb to edit as I have resorted to a back up made just before I made the site. So I want to know if I can access the site from Transmit and put it back into iweb for editing the site?
This is my first site I have made entirely on my own and have been learning as I go. If I can't access the site as I made it, I may try accessing the files from Transmit one by one to re-make the pages.
Any help on this will me very much appreciated.
This is my site for anyone who wants to see:
    http://jemgirl.com
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Sure, you could syncronize in the opposite direction to get your html files and images, etc back on your Mac. But you will have to drag and drop, copy and paste to get that content back into iWeb.
Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual html files, but in a file called Domain.sites which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. If you want to work on your site on another computer, copy this file to a thumb drive to move it around.
You should backup this file whenever you make big changes to your site, because if it gets lost or damaged, you will have to start all over. Sadly, many many people learn this the hard way. Unfortunately, looks like you have too.
I have an Automator app on my site that will help you backup your Domain file(s). Click here to download it or visit http://iweb.varkgirl.com for more info. The app will make a .zip file of your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and save it to a location of your choosing.
Then check out Mozy for an online place to store your backups - I just found this and it seems great. They just recently released a Mac friendly version of their app - it automates the upload and encryption. You select the files you want to backup and it does the rest. You can set it to upload automatically after so many minutes of inactivity or once a day. It does it all in the background so you don't have to worry about it! 2GB of storage are free - plenty of room for most people's iWeb Domain.sites backups!

  • If I want to restore back to snow leopard

I've had it with Lion. I want to restore Leopard. I have never use the backup utilities in Leopard, but I have backed up what I need to manually to another drive. What I want to ask about is app store purchases and itunes purchases and bookmarks. After I do a full restore of Leopard, basically back to "new out of the box" iMac, I have a few questions:
    1. Do I need to use the same user account when first time signing onto my iMac?
    2. After all the updates are applied for Leopard, can I simple sign back into the "iMac app store" and see all my old purchases and simply reinstall them?
    3. iTunes... I keep all my media files on an external USB hard drive for iTunes. Can I simply sign into iTunes with my account and "change back" the iTunes default media location in prefferences back to that external location, and have iTunes find and re apply everything just as it was before?
    4. I was told there is a file "Bookmarks.plist" that I can first backup, then after the full restore back to Leopard, I can simply copy back that Bookmarks.plist file and get all my bookmarks back? I know you can do an bookmarks export from safari, but I was told backing up your Bookmarks.plist files does the same thing, only slicker and better?
    5. My iCal is synced to my iPhone. Would my iPhone sync back all the events to the iCal? Can I use the iPhone to sync back info to the system?
Or do I need to first backup the iCal data somehow, also?
    6. Stickies... I believe I can backup the stickeis database file, then restore it and all my stickies notes will be intacked?
    7. Im also wondering about 3rd party software i've purchased, if that can be reinstalled and would the original activation or register codes or keys still work?
The same with "MS OFFICE for the iMac" and "PARALLELS", would their ownership register codes work as if I were simply reinstalling the program back onto the same old machine? Or would these 3rd party programs purchased with register codes think I was trying to install on a completely different system? Thus the original codes might not accept?
So thats my only real concerns...
Using the same user info when starting up my fully restored system for the first time?
Reinstalling already purchases iMac app-store items?
Re-installing 3rd party purchased software that will ask for the original activation or register code. WIll they still work?

  • Hi,  Had boot issue and got the following from DU repair function on Macintosh hd: updating boot support.....Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk.....reformat and restore backed up files. How is that done or do I go to Genius?

In reference to question the computer gave no warning but lost internet connectivity.  I shut down for a while and when returned it would only boot to gray logo screen with spinning gear.  Ran disk utility and on Mac HD drive it stopped after "Updating boot support partitions as required". Then in red: Error: Disk utility can' repair this disk ....disk, and restore backed up files.   I'm running OS X 10.8 and had just updated the iOS about three days ago.  Not familiar with reformat process on MacBook Pro and would like some ideas whether I should go to the Genius Bar here in Sydney or try it on my own.   I have been using time machine to back up to a 1TB La Cie drive right up to the crash.   Thanks for any advice.

Well it turned out the drive was shot.  Took it to the genius bar yesterday and they ran a test on the drive before trying the restore routine again.  Drive failed.
Replaced the drive and got the MBP back today.  Pretty quick and decent service once you get an appointment.
Now having trouble figuring how to do the Time Machine  saved files.  Have several applications which I'd like to keep but not sure how to trans the apps from my backup to the new.  Hunting for answers on that on the web.
    Thanks for you help, Eustace.

alrite. I have made my mistake. I should not jail break my iphone. So if I purchase my apps again from itunes is that mean mean my data will be back?
I hope you guys can giv me some support here since I am Apple genuine buyer. I could be wrong last time and now I turn over a new leaf and learn a lesson.
Please noted that I can always create new account to ask for the same questions without mention about "jailbreak" if I want to but obviously I won't do that. Please provide me your support! Thank you!

  • If I update from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and I have a time machine backup, can I do a full restore back to 10.6.8 and resume as if I had never updated?

If I update from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and I have a time machine backup, can I do a full restore back to 10.6.8 and resume as if I had never updated if there is a problem?  Probably an answer I should know but I don't.  Thanks in advance!  (instruction suggestions welcomed)

Upgrading the OS is a system wide thing. So all users will receive the upgrade.
It should not delete files and such. However, if you have for example files made with Pages '09. Then the new Pages that comes with Mavericks will make a copy of those files so you can continue to edit them. But those new files can not be opened in Pages '09. BUT again, some people perfer Pages '09 and they use that still. Mavericks will just hide Pages '09, it's still usable in Mavericks just hidden.
To be safe, make a back up of your system before doing any major upgrade.

  • Disk Repair notified me it could not repair the HD.  Iam to reformat the disk and restore backed up files.  OS Utilities give me a "Restore From Time Machine Backup" option.  I have not reformatted the disk;  does this restore option do both?

Disk Repair reported that it could not repair the HD Disk.  I am to reformat the disk and restore backed up files. OSX Utilities give me a choice of restoring from time machine backup (which I have on MyPassport) but no information on reformatting the disk, which I assume I have to do first.  How do I reformat the HD ...or does the restore from Time Machine do both things?

Boot OS X Recovery and use Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility reported the disk cannot be repaired though, you should replace it with a new one.

Get an external drive of sufficient capacity to hold everything on your internal drive.
Partition and format the external drive.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone your internal drive to the external drive.
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    Boot from the external drive.
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Open Startup Disk preferences and set the internal drive as the startup volume, then click on the Restart button.
Restore your data from your external drive backup.

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.
