Restoring backup to an 8.0 device from an 8.0.2 device

Just a quick tip, in case anyone is in the same position as I was: I had an iPhone 6, which I had updated to 8.0.2. I dropped it and broke the screen. (If you read that these devices break more easily than the 5, believe it!  I dropped it from 3 feet getting out of a cab, and the screen shattered into a thousand pieces. None of the pieces fell out, but it was almost impossible to use in that state. By comparison, I must have dropped my iPhone 5 one hundred times from that distance and greater - not a scratch.)
Anyhow, the tech at the Genius Bar told me they needed to replace the whole device because they didn't have the equipment yet to replace just the glass. (Fyi, they charged me just the cost of replacing the glass.)
When he was loading my backup from the old device he paused and asked whether I had upgraded to 8.0.2. I told him yes. He say, "ok, I think this will work, but let's see -- the device I'm giving you is on 8.0."  The device booted up and everything looked good. He said the restore would complete after I got back home on wifi.
A day later it hadn't completed yet. :-(
Then it occurred to me -- maybe the apps that loaded automatically with 8.0.2 couldn't restore because the couldn't exist with 8.0. So I deleted those apps -- easy to fine, because they were the only ones that hadn't updated by that time -- and presto the restore completed. I was then able to upgrade again to 8.0.2, and everything's great.
Someone better informed might be able to say whether this makes sense or not, but it worked for me, so I figured I would share.

The iPhone backup/restore priocess never has officially supported restoring a backup from a newer iOS version onto a device with an older iOS version.  Often the restore of a "point release" will work, but it is not supported.  I guess in your case, you found one that wouldn't work.

  • Even though iOS cannot restore backups of newer devices, can it restore data from an older device using 7.1.2 to a newer device using iOS8

    iPhone 4s 16GB running iOS 7.1.2. Even though iOS cannot restore backups of newer devices, can it restore data from an older device using 7.1.2 to a newer device using iOS8

    Hi ,
    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
    I understand that you cannot use your Wi-Fi after the latest update to your iPhone 4s. I know you have already done some great troubleshooting by restoring with iTunes but the Wi-Fi becomes unavailable very quickly after you set it up. Go ahead and set up the iPhone so you can get into the Setting and then follow the steps provided in the attached article.
    iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
         Resolution
    Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Restart your iOS device.
    Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
    Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
    Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
    If you complete all of these steps and still are not able to access the Wi-Fi, it may be necessary to follow the link at the bottom of the page and contact Apple Support.
    Have a great day,
    -Joe

  • Device dead, need to restore backup files from Palm 515 desktop software to Centro desktop software. Can it be done??

    Ok, here's the story:  My palm515 died about a year ago and since then I've been operating exclusively from my desktop software, until I recently bought a Palm Centro.  Instructions said to hotsync to device, install new Centro Software, then hotsync back from device onto the desktop program.  Problem is, I don't have a device to hotsync to because it's dead!  I have backups of desktop, so I tried installing Centro Software per instructions.  Centro Software said that it couldn't overwrite the old program, that I would manually have to uninstall it.  Ok.  But when I tried to go back into my old desktop software, it wouldn't even execute, like the Centro software had already begun to delete it.  So I reinstalled the old 515 software thinking I wanted to at least do another triple-dog-check backup to two different locations, maybe even print stuff out in case it woudn't restore to the new software.  Worst case scenario I have to type everything back in but at least I still have it.  But now i can't figure out how to restore backup files to the 515 software!  It keeps looking for .ada files but the backup files are .bak and it won't recognize them.  How the heck do you restore a backup on this thing!  OR, can I just install the new Centro software and restore the files from there.
    Somebody PLEASE tell me how this can be done.  My entire life, my business, all my clients, my appointments, my phone numbers, addresses, my records for my taxes, EVERYTHING is in there!
    thanks,

    Assuming you are not running Vista, and that you have copied the User folder with the .dat and .bak files to a safe location outside the Palm folder, completely uninstall the Access Desktop that came with your Centro and download and install 4.1.4e from Palm's download page.
    If you can get the m515 data in there by copying the User folder or Importing Data and sync the Centro you should be fine. Once it all appears where it should (Desktop and Centro) you can delete the User folder copy you copied for the process.

  • How to restore backup from different device

    Hallo... seems I have problem with downloading backup from my older ipad mini (16gb) into newer ipad mini retina (32gb)... during the first setup it aksed me if I want to restore backup from older device, but since my older ipad and its backup was on ios 8.0.2 and newly purchased ipad was still on 7.1.2 i needed to skip this and upgrade os first. now I have new device set up and running ios 8 but I can not get into it backup from older device. what to do?

    Resetting the iPad back to factory defaults should take you to the setup process and let you restore to an iCloud backup : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings
    Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes :
    You can go through the iOS Setup Assistant again by erasing all the content on the device. Just tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This will remove all content from your device, so do this only if you already have a backup. The iOS Setup Assistant is the only way to restore a backup.

    That's up to you. Do you want the data on your old phone on your new phone? If so, you follow the directions here:

    If you want to setup your new phone as a new device, then there is nothing you need to do.

  • How do I prevent icloud from overwriting my contacts when doing a restore backup from PC to iphone?

    My icloud contact list is screwed up. I have my contact list in my PC backup. I've removed icloud from iphone AND changed apple ID and icloud ID, yet when I attempt to restore backup from PC to iphone, my correct contact list shows up momentarily, then reverts to the screwed up icloud contact list.
    I understand that my PC backup is set to connect to icloud; however, one would think by removing the email address associated with apple or icloud that it would not be able to connect to icloud when I do a restore backup from PC to iphone. Yet each time I find icloud connected via my old email address after attempting the restore.
    How do I fix this? This seems like an icloud bug, since it connects via my old email/ID.

    The problem may be that the iphone is immediately syncing with icloud and losing the newly restored data.  You might turn off your router.  Once restored, turn off icloud on the device, turn on the router, then turn on the iphone.
    (I'm going by memory on this, and that hasn't been too reliable lately.)

    Which password?
    If you mean the passcode to your iPhone, here's the solution:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
    If you mean the encryption password to your backup on your computer:
    Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
    If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • HT4859 Restoring backups from iCloud

    Can't restore iCloud backups to my phone even after following the advice online

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
    When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.

  • Error when restoring iPhone (-50), data wiped & no device backups listed

    After upgrading my iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.x to 5.0.1, iTunes cannot complete the restoration of my phone using the backed up data (contacts, photos, etc). The phone is essentially factory-reset with iOS 5 and now whenever I connect my phone to my computer, iTunes prompts me with the following:
    "iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iPhone 'My iPhone'. Would you like to restore this iPhone again now?"
    ... with options to Cancel, Continue Restore, or Delete Backup. Choosing 'Continue Restore' returns an error message: "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)."
    The Device Backups list in iTunes Preferences is also empty, as if no backups were ever made--despite iTunes displaying it performed a backup prior to installing iOS 5. There are also folders in the following directories:
    C:\users\name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    C:\users\name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Backups *
    * A folder (~6gb) was created here at the time I upgraded.
    Is there any way to retrieve my data? Or complete the restoration? I lost everything since 2010.
    I'm running:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    iTunes 10.5.0.142

    Solution in another thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2698089?threadID=2698089&tstart=103
    (1) I deleted all but one folder in: "Users/NAME/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/MobileSync/Backup" and then deleted all the files in this folder but leaving the folder intact.
    (2) Next, I copied all the files from: "Users/NAME/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes/Mobile Backups/RANDOM FOLDER/Structured" and copied them into the folder above.
    (3) Then I selected the folder which I copied the files to in: "Users/NAME/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/MobileSync/Backup" in my iTunes restore from backup option and what do ya know...it worked. All my wife's data was restored...pics, contacts, etc.
    I would suggest creating a backup now that you can find in iTunes. Then access that folder and delete all the files in it. Copy and paste all the files from the folder you mentioned above into the new folder that you can access in iTunes and then try to restore from it (as iTunes should still see the original folder). That's what worked for me. I would recommend that you make copies of both folders somewhere though in case it doesn't work for you then you at least have original copies. Good luck!

    Yes, if you're restoring from iCloud.  No, if restoring from iTunes.

  • Is it better to register iPhone on iTunes or restore backup from iPod Touch

    I just got an iPhone 3gs. When I plug it into computer USB and iTunes is open, iTunes asks me if I want to register it as new iPhone or if I want to restore from my last iPod Touch backup. I'm not sure which one I should do, because I actually do want to transfer all the apps from my iPod Touch to my phone as well. So if I choose restore from backup, all the apps would be placed on the phone, correct? But I'm not sure if iTunes will or will not recognize my phone as a phone afterwards. Will it recognize it as the iPod Touch after that?
    I basically need to know:
    A) If I should register or restore from backup
    B) How to transfer apps from iPod Touch to iPhone [I did already transfer all purchases to iTunes from iPod Touch]
    C) How do I transfer contacts from Outlook to my iPhone?
    Any help is MUCH appreciated!

    set it up as a new device.

  • Is it possible to restore backup that has been deleted from the repository?

    Hi,
    with Rman 9i I do a full database backup including the current controlfile each night (with the catalog option). If the backup has been successful all backups older than 3 days are deleted (because of a lack of disk space).
    Now I have to restore a backup older than 3 days which can be written back to disk from tape.
    On disk there is a backup still available which is 2 days younger than the one I have to restore. That means in its controlfile the backup to be restored doesn't have the status DELETED yet.
    Can I restore this controlfile first, then resync my catalog and restore the old backup after the entry is back to the catalog ?
    How do I specify which controlfile and which backupset should be restored ?

    Hi ebrian,
    thank you for your quick answer.
    Just to be sure that I understand you right:
    I startup the database in nomount mode.
    Then I restore the controlfile from the backup which is 2 days younger than the one I have to restore because this controlfile contains the desired backup record with status "not deleted". Is that right ?
    Each of my backup consists of 3 backup pieces. How can I find out which of the pieces contains the controlfile ? Or can I try one after the other until it works ?
    After the controlfile is restored successfully I use the following commands to restore and recover the database:
    rman target=sys/<syspw>@target_db
    run {
    alter database mount;
    allocate channel c1 type disk;
    set until time '<point of time a little bit prior to the point of time of the backup to be restored>';
    restore database;
    recover database;
    release channel c1;
    open database resetlogs;
    exit;
    Because of the "resetlogs" I take a full backup of the database afterwards.
    For the future I intend to change the process of deleting backups as described below:
    * delete them from disk with operating system command not with the rman delete command
    * configure retention policy to recovery window of n days (n = number of days backups are preserved on tape)
    * start rman script each night: \\     allocate channel for maintenance device type disk; \\     delete obsolete; \\     release channel;
    Is it possible to restore each backup from tape if required with the procedure described ?
    One last question concerning the recovery:
    instead of the "set until time " before using the "restore database" command is it possible to specify a concrete backup to be restored (e.g. specifying the exact time it is taken or the backup piece numbers) ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Restore new iPad Mini from iPad 1 backup. Ican update new apps from Apple store but most of my apps have been showing the Waiting status for over 12 hours. Store shows them as installed. What gives?

    Restore new iPad Mini from iPad 1 backup. Ican update new apps from Apple store but most of my apps have been showing the Waiting status for over 12 hours. Store shows them as installed. What gives?

    If the downloads are stalled or "waiting" - try these suggestions.
    Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
    If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
    Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
    You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
    You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.
    If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

  • Help "Cannot Restore Backup" - Lost all my sons baby photos from birth

    Hi All,
    When trying to restore my iPhone I receive this message "Cannot Restore Backup" when selecting any of the three previous restore points. I had a live chat conversation with apple; they confirmed all three of my backup's are ok their end and recommended that I try the two finger reboot and reset my wifi. None of this worked so they suggested that I tried again in the Apple store using their wifi.... Again didn't work. Made a appointment with the genius bar and they tried a DFU mode reboot with no joy. Next they tried a restore using a new hand set but this also didn't work. Apple has now set a call back for 4:15 tomorrow 3/11/14.
    I am now pretty concerned as iCloud has all my photos of my baby sons photo since he was born, which are priceless photos. I don't care about my app etc but I really hope that Apple have a way to supply me with my photos should all else fail. After all I'm paying monthly for a 200GB storage plan which at the moment doesn't appear to be fit for purpose.
    Has anyone had any joy in resolving this issue? The member of the genius bar tried to make out that my device or wifi was the problem when backing up. I pointed out that at no point has my phone informed me that the backup failed and that the apple advisor via the live chat said my backups were fine. I said from my point of view I'm paying for a service to ensure all of my photos and videos were safely stored without fear of a home hard drive failing.
    Thanks in advance for any help or advice,
    Carl
