Restoring backup to another user on another computer

The bad news, my trusty PowerBookG4 was stolen today. It had many years of work and projects for a PhD that I'm working on.
The good news, I've got time capsule and used it.
I also have a Mac mini that the family shares. We all have our own user accounts on it but I rarely used it since I had the laptop. I want to restore my backup from my G4 backup to this Mac mini, but only on MY account and not mess with the other accounts. Can this be done?
When Time machine does the backup, does it back up the whole computer or just the logged in account?
They don't have the same applications on each computer so will those be replaced too?
I didn't have the laptop set to require a login at startup. It was at home so I didn't think I needed to but they broke in and ransacked the place. I guess they will have access to all the emails that were local but I've changed the passwords on all accounts so that they won't get any more.
Thanks for any help and advice.

yes. use Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities).

the whole computer.

Migration Assistant will give you an option whether or not to migrate Applications. I wouldn't migrate them.

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

can i transfer my backup to another computer and then restore my backup

Yes.  However, the backup file does not necessarily contain everything on your device (music, some purchases, some photos) so you want to make sure all items are backed up and transferred for safekeeping first.

  • Restore backup in another machine

Forgive me for the 'weak' English.
    Oracle 10gR2 in both machines.
    RH4E in both machines.
I am trying to restore one backup in another machine.
I copied the backup files to the new host, created one passwordfile, created a init.ora file and created the directories used in the init.ora.
I set the ORACLE_SID for the SID of the original db and after to try to connect as sysdba I receive error ORA-01031: insufficient privileges.
    sqlnet.ora:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
But I also tried with other parameters (NONE, EXCLUSIVE) and nothing.
I have one another instance running in this machine (where I want restore backup).
    export oracle_sid=my_sid
    sqlplus /nolog
    SQL> conn /as sysdba
    ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
    Somebody can help me?

    sqlnet.ora:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)Assuming your OS user (normally oracle) is member of dba group, try removing (or commenting) that line.

  • Can I restore backup from another mac with time machine?

I would like to restore files from a TM backup from another Mac - is this possible? Thanks.

I'm not sure I know how to help. I use OS X Server's Time Machine services from a Mac Mini to do my back ups to a drive connected to that server. I have the same user account on one MBP Retina that does not do back ups as another MBP Retina that DOES back ups. However, I can't even open the sparse bundle from the one that doesn't do back ups of the one that does (if that makes sense).
You might try and see if this link helps. This guy was the TM guru around here. He might have addressed a solution to what you're trying to do.

  • Retrieving work files/data from a time machine backup off another computer

If I create a time machine backup on one imac (imac 1) onto an external drive, I want to know if I can use this backup on another mac (imac 2) and restore or retrieve the old work files as and when required work from the external drive (time machine backup)? onto imac 2?

You can't use Time Machine for Restoring on iMac 2 (if you made an TM Backup with iMac 1), but you can easily drag files from the "Time-machine-Backup-volume" in Finder on your iMac 2!

  • Restoring OS using another computer

    Hi,
    I have three iMacs.
    1. An original iMac 233MHz G3, tray load CD, no firewire, OS 8.6
    2. An iMac 600 MHz G3, slot load CD *(not working)*, firewire, OS 9.2 and OS 10.4
    3. And an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, slot loading CD/DVD, firewire, OS 10.6
I want to erase and restore the 2nd iMac but I need to use the CD-ROM from my other computers.
Is there a way to connect the computers so I can use my _Software Restore CD_ in the first or third computers to erase and restore the second computer?
The first computer does not have firewire so I assume it does not have Target Disk Mode capabilities.
The third computer will not boot from the OS 9 Software Restore CD.
    Thanks,
    Oceanstorm

    Hi, Oceanstorm -
Great - glad you were able to get that done.
What is the difference between Software Restore and Software Install?
The Software Install CD installs a System Folder plus a standard set of utilities (Disk First Aid, Drive Setup, etc.). It does not install other programs, such as ones which may have been bundled with the machine when it was originally purchased.
    • The installer on this uses an array of files contained in a special archive called a Tome as its source.
    • This CD can be used for repair purposes, and is able to do a Clean Install of the OS if that should be necessary (in OS 9, a Clean Install removes nothing. Instead, it installs a brand new System Folder, renames the old one to Previous System Folder, and does not much else.). Many of them can also do a Universal install of the OS.
    • The capabilities available using a Software Install CD are much the same as using a retail Install CD, except for the limitatiuon of what machines it will work on. In addition to being able to do a Clean Install, it can be used to do a selective re-install of particular software.
    • The utility TomeViewer can also be used to manually extract chosen software items from the Tome on the CD.
    TomeViewer
    How to use TomeViewer
The Software Restore CD is designed to revert the hard drive's contents to match the drive as it was originally shipped when the machine was new, includinng any programs bundled by Apple with the machine.
    • The installer on this disk uses a disk image of the original drive, copying the full preconfigured contents of the disk image to the hard drive. There are no options as to what can be installed.
    • Although this disk can also be used to do some repairs if needed, it can not be used to do a Clean Install of the OS, nor can it be used to do a selective re-install of software items.

Why can I use a model-specifc version of OS 9.1 disk on another computer?
I'm going to assume you meant to enter "Why can I not use...", which is a correct assessment.
Different models of Macs have different hardware. Even two machines of the same class (such as iMacs) which are adjacent in model release dates may have different hardware. This difference may apply just to the processor, or it may also extend to other hardware items inside.
The retail OS 9 Install CDs contain files suitable to match the hardware on any model Mac capable of running that OS version. The installer is programmed to determine which particular files are needed for the machine doing the install, and to install those files.
The original disks which came with a machine do not have any file choices other than those needed by the machine they shipped with; thus, they are model-specific to that particular machine model. Most of the time they are not capable of even booting a different model, much less installing on it.
Your iMac 600 was released after the commercial release of OS 9 (after the release of the retail OS 9.1 Install CD). Apparently it needed some files newer than those that are available on the retail OS 9.1 Install CD, yet OS 9.2 was not yet ready for release. As a result, it came with a newer version of OS 9.1 (probably incorporating Finder v. 9.1.1 instead of 9.1, or other similar change) and can not use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD.
    <hr>
If I am not using OS9 via the OSX classic boot is there a need to update to 9.2? (I will have OS 10.4 on the same machine.)
If you are not going to use OS 9 as Classic under OSX, then you need not update it. If you do intend to use OS 9 as Classic under OSX 10.4, you should probably update it to OS 9.2.1 or even to 9.2.2 - OSX 10.4 apparently is not happy using OS 9.1 as Classic.
If you keep the OS 9 install as OS 9.1, at least update the Startup Disk control panel to v. 9.2.1. The version of that control panel that comes with OS 9.1 and earlier is not coded to recognize OSX as a viable OS. Updating that control panel will facilitate switching from one OS to the other. There is a download specifically for that (by the way, this replacement control panel works with older OS versions, too, at least as far back as OS 8.6) -

If you need the download updaters for OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 (note that if you want to end up at 9.2.2 you must first install the 9.2.1 update) -

  • Restoring OS from another computer?

I need to rephrase my original post:
I have a PowerMac G4 using the OS 10.2.1, the original OS that came with computer. I have not installed OS upgrades. Now I have a hopelessly damaged system. I was in OS 9 when it occured. I get a flashing folder with a question mark at start-up. I want to use the system restore CD's that came with the computer, but they don't mount at start-up.
Any suggestions on what to do? I don't want to do a clean install.
So my question is, is it possible to use the system restore software by way of my iBook? Using a firewire cable, connecting the two computers together, and starting the Power Mac holding down the T key gives me access to my Power Mac HD and I could easily install the restore software from the iBook. Does anyone know if this will work?
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

In order to reinstall your software without doing a clean install means you will have to do an Archive and Install. To do so requires booting the computer from your OS X Installer Disk (not the Software Restore disk.) If your hard drive is also damaged you will have to repair the drive before doing the Archive and Install. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk and as soon as the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports errors that have been fixed re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
However, if your system is badly damaged you would be better off doing a clean install. You should backup your personal files first. Then insert the OS X Installer Disk in the optical drive and restart the computer. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer boots from the Installer Disk. When you reach the stage in the installation where you choose the destination drive select the drive then click on the Options button. Select the Erase and Install option and click on OK. My back up did not totally transfer pictures, contacts from one user id to another.

Not sure what you are asking.  Are you saying you were able to restore to the iCloud backup but not all the data was restored?

  • I saved a backup on my iMac. Is it possible to "move" this backup to another computer, so i can connect my iPhone to my new computer and restore all things on my iPhone?

I used to have an iPhone full of all the greatest pictures of my life, the apps i enjoyed the most, and all my numbers to my friends and so on.
Now i have to change computer (The iMac still works) and i wonder, is it possible to move the backup (whereever it is found on the computer) from the iMac and put it onto my new HP laptop?
IF YES: Where is the backup file saved on the iMac?

If you still have the iPhone just download iTunes for Windows and sync your iPhone (do one last sync with the Mac first).  To answer your question the location on your Mac for your media is at /Users/yournamehere/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music  Your contacts and pictures would need to be exported from iPhoto and the app you were using as your contact manager (Address Book, Outlook)  The backup file is located at /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

  • Help with restoring from Time Machine Backup from another computer

I was required to dump my Mac OSX on my MacBook Pro and convert to a windows machine to use a testing software that did not allow boot camp.  Before doing so, I backed up my hard drive to a partition of my iMac via a wireless connection.  I am now using a boot disk to try to restore my system from the Time Machine backup on the iMac.  I have logged onto my wireless network, but the Mac OSX Installer just keeps saying "Searching for Time Machine Backups..."  My iMac is on (typing this now) and is active on the network.  What do I need to do to be able to see my Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro?

    Hi m,
I don't know if this would make a difference or not, but you could try booting the iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode.

  • Using backups on another computer

I had my MacBook Pro fixed and they replaced the logic board. Unfortunately, it seems that time machine thinks of my computer as a different one. When I go into Time Machine there's nothing there, but on my external drive it still has all the backups from before I had it sent in.
Any way to have my computer use the backups that are already on the drive?

Yes, to TM, it is a different computer. The logic board includes your Ethernet "Mac Address", which is a unique number that TM uses to be sure it knows which Mac is which.
There is a fairly elaborate way to attempt to persuade TM that the existing backups really are for your "new" Mac: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It is very easy for the inexperienced user of Terminal (and the not-so-inexperienced as well) to make an error with Terminal, get no error message, and have it not work, so try it at your own risk.
But there is an alternative: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar. The +Enter Time Machine+ option changes to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+ That's a bit misleading, but it will take you into the normal TM interface where you can see and restore from the old set of backups.
Your first backup with the new logic board may be a full one -- every file and folder on your system. If TM decides to do that, you cannot prevent it.
So if your TM disk/partition isn't at least 2.5 times the size of the data it's backing-up, your best bet may be to just erase it with Disk Utility and let TM start over.
