Restoring bkf files in Server 2012

I am wondering if anyone has found a tool to restore a bkf file in Server 2012.
The hotfix released for Server 2008R2 that enables you to restore a backup made using in ntbackup in Server 2003 does not work.
I have tested using xcopy which will work but will take far longer than doing a backup of a server and restoring to a new server.
I have reached out to Microsoft reps to see if there are plans to create a hotfix for Server 2012 but am not getting much of a response.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same Problem here
i could open some of the archives with 7-zip, everthing else is shareware ~90$

  • Creating System Restore Points in Windows Server 2012

Searching for "Create a restore point" on Windows Server 2012, brings up a link that when clicked takes you to System Properties. Once there, there is no System Protection tab or option to create a system restore point. Windows Server Backup
    is installed and functioning.
Is this feature available in Windows Server 2012? Was it replaced with Shadow Copies for Shared Folders?
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

     HI,
To create a system restore point, run msconfig.exe, that will launch a UI, click the tools tab, select system restore, that should invoke a UI which asks if you want to  restore to an earlier version or do you want to create a new restore point. I clicked
"create a new restore point" The problem that I ran into is that when I click that button is I receive the error: can't find "C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe". That's the .exe which supports the "Create / restore point' processes. I
posted a question about the missing .exe on the windows > windows 8.1 > Repair and recovery forum and was told to post it here. :>) The subject title of that post is "rstrui.exe Create a system restore point on windows server 8 Standard".
That post documents the steps that I followed trying to create a system restore point. (FYI: I'm not trying to backup any drives. I know what a system restore point is and what backup is. They are two different animals). I want to create a restore
point prior in order to prep for installing an App. So, If a problem occurs; the registry keys and app files can be backed out to some extent. BTW: Create system restore point on windows 8.1does work perfectly well, there's a different UI. I just didn't
know where to post the initial problem.regards,Steve

  • Cannot restore BKF files in Windows 7 - show stopper

I've yet to see a way of restoring BKF files backed up from Windows XP, into Windows 7.
Pretty annoying when MS say to use NTBackup to backup your files on Windows XP prior to installing Windows 7.
I delayed going from Windows XP to Windows Vista as I wanted to see what Windows 7 was like. Unfortunately without being able to restore my files, I'm going to have to ditch the RC and go back to WinXP. And hope that MS come up with an approach for properly migrating from WinXP to Win7. Otherwise, good ol' WinXP may have a few years left in it yet.
And sad thing is apart from that, everything else was going well.
    Fingers crossed!!

    Hi Mitch
Restoring files from the older NTBackup is not supported in Windows 7. There was a program released for Windows Vista that allowed restoring files backed up with NTBackup in Windows XP, but this restoration utility depended on the Windows Removable Storage Manager which is not included or compatible with Windows 7.
The only suggestion I can make is that if you have or know someone who has either a Windows XP or Windows Vista system, use that system to restore the files and then simply copy them to external media and then move them to your Windows 7 system. Here is a link for your convenience.
Download details: Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility for Windows Vista
    Hope this helps.
Thank You for testing Windows 7

  • How do I manage open files in Server 2012 without resorting to 3rd party application?

How do I manage open files in Server 2012 without resorting to 3rd party application?
I cannot find the Mange open files in FSRM.
    Thanks

Wouldn't it make sense to place it in the server manager / shares section?
I mean, second to creating or finding a share, isn't this what most users would be after?
For like 20 years we've been trained to right click to find stuff Microsoft is hiding, and right click don't do nothin' here.  You gotta go hunting under tools.   Or, forget the new half-baked interface with half of what you need and go old school,
direct to Start - Computer..Right Click.. whoops... that doesn't exist anymore.....
Drool.........drool.............Find that hiding, blinking start button in a RDP session, click start after three trys,  and TYPE IN "Computer Management" .  Right Click, Pin it to your desktop, pin it to the start screen, pin it to the taskbar, send
it to OneNote, and upload it to skydrive  so you can find it again, then get back to what you were doing....to find the cottin' pickin open files and kick your users off so you can have your way with the server.

Did you check the fulltext log files for more details about the errors. If the filter isn’t working, there should be errors in the error log file.

  • How to mount remote VHDX file in Server 2012 R2?

In Server 2012 R2, is it possible to mount a VHDX file referenced by http or https protocol?
I know Mount-DiskImage cmdlet can mount a VHD, VHDX, ISO file wether it's local or via a UNC path. Any other way to mount a remote disk file?
Sam Boutros, Senior Consultant, Software Logic, KOP, PA http://superwidgets.wordpress.com (Please take a moment to Vote as Helpful and/or Mark as Answer, where applicable)

    Hi,
You can attach a VHDX file that is located on a remote server message block (SMB). There is no article mentioned that we could mount a VHDX file referenced by http or https protocol.
We could mount a VHDX file on the iSCSI Target server. The iSCSI Target Server is the server component which provides the block storage to initiators.
For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

  • Open Files on Server 2012 - Why Do All Mapped Drives (and users) Show as Open

Our office just installed Server 2012 (Standard).  We used to run Server 2003 Standard.
We have 3 shared/mapped folders on the server - and have 12 users mapped to those shared folders.
When I go to Computer Management/Shared/Open files, it used to be empty if no users were currently using one of the shared folders (in Server 2003).   Now even if no users are currently using one of the mapped folders - most of the users
are listed with the mapped drive reference.
Is this something new in Server 2012?
I used to use this to determine exactly who was in a share if we had problems and needed to close that particular workstation.  Now with them all listed, I am wondering if things are not closing properly??
Thank you for any insight you can provide!

Thank you for your reply.  Now I notice that even though a workstation (Windows 7.0 Pro) has closed our Prosystem FX tax program, there will still be at least one file showing as "open"  for that program on Server 2012 even though the user has
exited the program and we have rebooted the workstation.
The tax program itself doesn't seem to "think" the files are open as it lets me do tasks that require all users to be out of the program.
Just wondering why files that aren't open seem to show as open on Server 2012.  They did not do this with Server 2003 and XP workstations.  Or even with Server 2003 and Windows 7 Pro workstations.  Just when we changed to Server 2012 and have
    our Windows 7.0 workstations.
    Thank you again,
    Brenda

  • Unattend files and Server 2012 R2 RDS

    Hi
I have a vdi implementation (managed, pooled vm's) , which is working fine as long as i don't create a custom unattend file. for exmaple, my desktops need to run some powershell scripts upon first logon,
which i use to be able to do in Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup under firstlogoncommands, but these scripts don't seem to run with vdi desktops. is there any other way to get these scripts to run before a user logs on for the first time?

    Hi,
Thanks for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
For your case, have you try to enable GPO setting for applying logon script on first logon?
You can able to view the option of GPO setting “Run Windows PowerShell scripts first at user logon, logoff” or “Run Windows PowerShell scripts first at computer startup, shutdown” under below mention path.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Scripts\
    User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Scripts\
Note: If applied for computer & User configuration both, then Computer configuration will take precedence over user configuration.

  • FSRM - Can I see all files of a particular type in File Group - Server 2012 R2

    Hi folks,
Just wondering can anyone help me with this!
I've selected a Files by File Group report and selected Audio and Video Files, Executable Files and image files but when I set the maximum number of files in any file group per report to 999999999 (max allowed) it only says the top 100 files are shown
    in the following file groups.
Is there any way that I can tweak FSRM so it shows me all the files in that particular file group that has over 100 files on the drive that I am scanning?
    Thanks,
    Bonemister

    Hi Bonemister,
As you said it is a limitation of FSRM in current version. It will only display top 100 files. I'm sure that development team know the requirement of showing more files in report but currently there is no news about an upgrade version.

  • How do I do a Windows 7 restore as a Hyper-V clent with Server 2012 Essentials R2?

How do I do a Windows 7 restore as a Hyper-V client with Server 2012 Essentials R2?  There is no client restore CD available as an ISO to mount as the CD.
    Scott

    Hi,
As we know, to simplify the bare metal restore scenario, we implemented the Client Restore Service in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, which will enable WDS on the Windows Server Essentials
server and configure the client restore image as a boot image. With the Client Restore Service turned on, the administrator can initiate a PXE boot on a client computer by using a network interface to launch the Client Restore Wizard and restore the client
computer. There’s no need to prepare a client restore DVD, or a client restore USB bootable key. For details about how to perform the client restore, please refer to the following article.

  • DFSR Pre-Seeding in Server 2012

    Hello,
I'm preparing to add a new DFS replication member to a domain. In the past, I've used the methods described at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/09/07/replacing-dfsr-member-hardware-or-os-part-2-pre-seeding.aspx?PageIndex=2 and this has worked well. However, this time I need to pre-seed a Windows Server 2012 machine from a Server 2003 R2 machine. The
sticking point is using the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=60480f87-39df-410a-92e1-f2cbc8442fdc&displaylang=en) to
restore the pre-seed files as this appears to only be available for Server 2008/R2.
My question is - does the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility work on Server 2012? If not, what's the 'correct' way to pre-seed on Server 2012 from Server 2003 R2?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

I too am in the process of replacing an old server 2003 r2 that is a DC, has DNS running and a DFSR member. It is being replaced with either server 2k8 R2 or server 2012.
    1. Can I build the server and have it replicate it's DFSR folders at the main site, before I take it to another branch?
    2. If I use windows backup server, should I install DFSR before trying to restore?
    3. Should recreate the folder structure prior to restoring?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have a sharePoint 2013 installed as standalone with sql server express edition 2008.Now my database size as increased more that 10GB.I have installed SQL server 2012 enterprise edition on other server.I want to know how do I make this standalone installation
as farm installation so that the sharePoint installation can take advantage of sql server 2012 enterprise edition ?
    Or
Do I need to take backup and reinstall to share point as farm solution?

You need to install & Configure new SharePoint farm, then Move the Content DB to new farm/new SQL server.
Install the SharePoint 2013, Configure it
Create & Configure any Services Application
    Create the Web Application
Backup the Content DB from Express & restore it to SQL Server 2012.
Attach it to the Web Application.

  • Restore bkf Backup Files on Tape with Windows Server 2008 R2

We have to migrate an application from a legacy server (OS Windows Server 2003) to a new server (OS Windows Server 2008 R2).
Due to legal obligations we have to keep backups for 10 years. Until now NTBACKUP was used to store the data on tape.
We must be able to restore data from tapes of the last 10 years for audit purposes.
We installed Update für Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB974674) containing NTBackup-RestoreUtility on the new server.
It seems that this tool is not able to restore from tapes.
How can we fullfil the legal requirements to restore backuped data from tape on Windows Server 8 R2 (and in future with Windows Server 2012 R2)?
