Restoring bookmarks from Time Machine?

Hi everyone,
This is the first time I'm posting. I've been trying to restore my Google Chrome bookmarks for hours now from my Time Machien backup. I'm running Mac OSX version 10.5.8. I can't find the directory where the bookmarks are stored.
I've tried the ~Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome path...
Problem is that when I get to the google folder in the application support folder, the Chrome folder does not exist in any of my back ups. Does this mean my Time Machine DIDN'T backup my bookmarks?!?!??!?!?!? Are there other ways I can retreive my bookmarks? I really need help on this quick- I have so many bookmarks that are great online resources for me ; (
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Maggie

Copy the text on the line below to the clipboard, then quit Safari:
~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
Select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens, then press return.
A folder window will open with a file selected. Enter Time Machine and restore the selected file.

Is there a way to force iCloud to choose the bookmarks from safari on my computer?
When I turn on Safari sharing in iCloud, it merges, and messes things up.
I'm running latest Yosemite and iOS8 on all devices.
    Thanks!

Thanks Linc. I just tried it. Turned of Safari sync on all devices, but when I turn on Safari sync on my computer to start things off, it's still getting the old data from somewhere. Maybe it's storing it in the cloud and I need to delete that data somehow? I definitely turned off sync on all possible devices.
Thanks for helping! I really appreciate it.

  • Restoring Firefox Bookmarks from Time Machine

I just updated my OS to 10.5.8. When I went to restore my Firefox Bookmarks from Time machine using this pathway: /users/username/library/application support/firefox, I realized that I do NOT have a Firefox folder in this pathway. There is a mozilla folder that contains a folder called "extensions" and an icon labeled pkcs11.shlb.
I am desperate to find my Firefox bookmarks. Any suggestions on where I might be able to find/restore them?
    Thanks!

this can't be. if you've been using firefox that folder must be there. firefox won't even run without creating it. maybe it got a hidden flag? run this in terminal and post the results
    ls -ladeO@ ~/library/application support/Firefox

  • Restoring safari bookmarks from time machine

Somehow bookmarks in one of my Safari bookmark folders got deleted in the course of attempting to move the folder. When I go into time machine to restore an earlier version of my book marks time machine does not display the contents of the caches folder where I understand the Safari bookmarks are kept, i.e. ~/library/caches/metadata/safari/bookmarks..
Is there a way to get time machine to display contents of the caches and metadata folders? If not, is there another way to restore an earlier version of my Safari bookmarks? I have separate backups on external drives in addition to the time machine backup.
    Thanks,

EDIT (copy from above response in thread)
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Safari
    Quit Safari.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder

A folder window should open. Restore the file named "Bookmarks.plist" in that folder from a backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • How do I recover accidentally deleted bookmarks from time machine.

I use lion os I still have the bookmarks on my ipad and iphone. I stopped the auto sync.
Is there a way to import my old bookmarks from time machine?
    I can't find it .
As a side note I was deleting bookmarks with the keyboard delete key and it ran away deleting bookmarks long after I let up. Then safari froze. died and lost the bookmarks

I don't know why you moved the app. Move the application back into your "Applications" folder which is where it belongs and should always stay. Then drag the app down to your Dock, if the Dock icon is not there already.
Now, open AddressBook. The click on the TM icon on your Dock. Now do you see the TM screen with AB open? Good. Use the TM time arrow back button until AB appears the way it used to be. Then click restore.

  • How can i retrieve bookmarks from time machine?

Hello. I need major help. This past weekend, I had to wipe the HD on my Macbook Pro. I did have Time Machine backups at the time. Is there any way to retrieve my old Firefox bookmarks from Time Machine? Please help. I'm trying to recover more than two years of work. Please help! :-)

You would have to find the previously used Firefox profile folder in the Time Machine backup.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
The profile folder consists of a part with a random name and a trailing file extension part that shows in the Profile Manager.
You need to go one level up and locate that folder in the time machine backup.
    */Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/
Then you need to transfer the places.sqlite file to the current profile folder or possibly use a JSON backup to restore the bookmarks.
Make sure to remove other possible places.sqlite files (places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal in particular).

  • Restoring files from Time Machine after installing Maverick

I have an older MacBook Pro and while installing Maverick my aged hard drive gave out. I got a new hard drive installed by an authorized Mac dealer and now I'm trying to restore files from Time Machine. I haven't done anything at all yet with Maverick. I followed the Migration Assistant directions and have the backup connected to my laptop. The backup icon appeared on my desktop. I hit continue and followed directions and reached the point where it said "looking for source" and there is a spinning ball. That was an hour ago. Is it just taking a long time to sort through the large volume of material in my Time Machine backup, or is something wrong? What should I be doing, if anything? Thank you for your help.

Do I need to uninstall CS4 and reinstall?
    Unfortunately yes.
Also run the Cleaner Tool prior to reinstalling
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Restoring from Time Machine backups invariably breaks the activation mechanism (Error 150:30) and there's no easy way to fix a 150:30 error other than via re-installing.

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • HT201250 Circle and cross through iTunes icon afte the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup.

Circle and cross through iTunes icon: had the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup. Why does the iTunes icon have a circle and cross through it? As though incomplete? tried everything and still Circle and cross through iTunes icon.

No it isn't something you'd find on the computer, it has to be custom installed from the 10.6 installer disc or Software Update if it wasn't before.  It allows you to use older PowerPC applications on your Mac.   On the other hand double check the version of iTunes you have does not require 10.7 minimum either.

  • Restoring iTunes from Time Machine and external HD

    Hi there,
I've done some searching and i haven't been able to find the answer to this problem. I am wondering if someone can help me with this.
My HD was faulty so i had it replaced.  my complete 300gb music library was backed up on an external HD. The iTunes program was running on my local HD. So i ran the local iTunes off of my ext. HD.
Now that i have a new HD and i restored everything from Time Machine, for some reason all my playlists and songs have been emptied from the new iTunes.
I am trying to restore it to its original state instead of readding everything from the external HD and trying to remember all the playlists.  (and that doesn't work either as it comes up with errors.)
I have looked for the plist and or old .itl or.xml but nothing shows up.
    Any ideas?

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.
