Restoring doesn't work

Restoring my iPod Video doesn't seem to work as every time I restore it, it only continues to ask me to restore over and over again to no avail. I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the iPod itself that needs service or if there's been a small step in Apple's support that I've overlooked.
(All my iPod and iTunes software is up to date and I've just recently restarted my computer and updated/reinstalled my USB devices)

Hi GenericUsername,
It sounds like you might be having a issue of drive letter confusion here.
Try assigning your iPod a different drive letter, by following the instructions from this Knowledge Base article, here:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive
Also, you could try reformatting your iPod in FAT32 format, followed by a restore in iTunes, by following these steps:
1 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
2 - When iTunes has finished syncing with your iPod, open "My Computer".
3 - Right-click on your iPod, and click on "Format". (If your iPod is not showing in My Computer, make sure that disk use is enabled in iTunes).
4 - Here, verify that your formatting settings are "Default", with the format type set for FAT32. Also, make sure that "Quick Scan" is not selected.
5 - Then, click on "OK" to begin the formatting process.
6 - When this is complete (it might take a while), make sure to restore your iPod in iTunes again, so as to properly reload the firmware back onto it again.

What if Factory Restore doesn't work?

As a last ditch effort, try the following:
Power off the AirPort for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
At this point, the amber should be blinking slowly, and you should be able to reconfigure it again using AirPort Utility on your Mac
If a factory default reset does not work, the AirPort is defective and will need to be replaced.

Oh my god, it finally worked ! I restored on an old PC and it worked !
    Thanks anyway for your help.
But allow me to extend to you a simple reflexion about the jailbreak (even if my iPhone wasn't... except if my little cousin jailbreaked without me noticing the advantages or disadvantages) : Would you refuse an alcoholic trying to go to rehab ? Would you really let someone trying to restore a cellular phone die without it, because he went on the bad side a couple of years ?
Not a great analogy, but this is a user-to-user forum, and Apple will not allow discussion of jailbreaking; if someone tried to help with jailbreaking the message would be deleted. However, if you have a jailbroken phone Apple will generally not block a discussion of how to unjailbreak it. The only problem is that not all jailbroken phones can be restored successfully; it depends on the method of jailbreaking (which I can't discuss without THIS message being deleted).

if the phone we are updating is locked how can we 6.1 to 5.0 and what if restoring doesn't work at all...

iTunes will only ever install the latest version of iOS for the device, in the case of the 3GS that is 6.1.

  • Ipod not recognized and Restore doesn't work

i have an ipod classic 160 GB, with disk mode enabled. When i connect it to the mac mini, it calls up iTunes. but then the message comes up that ipod can't be recognized. So i have restored it (using the latest updates, by connecting to the net) and then synced. During ejecting the ipod too, the proper procedure has been followed. However, at the end of all of it (i have 10000+ items in iTunes and it takes a LOOONG time to sync), when i try to use the disconnected ipod, it shows 'No Music', 'No Playlists', no this, no that...
I have also gone thru some other posts in this forum which suggested methods (such as getting ipod into disk mode and then connecting, trashing ipod software updates and reinstalling), to try to rectify the problem but there has been no difference And BTW, now i check, ipod shows 92 GB free (of the 160 GB). so what been copied, and where is it? or is the flash drive corrupted?
Pls HELP, as I need the ipod and my music
BTW, I think that this problem has become more pronounced since I installed the latest iTunes update (7.6.1)

    Try this...
    *Checking hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the iPod. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.
Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. Complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos etc.

  • I don't like Firefox 7, how do I revert to the previous version? System restore doesn't work.

With Firefox 7 my computer is slower to boot up and shut down. When typing the website I want in the address bar the old firefox took me straight to the site now it takes me to Google. I'd like to revert to the previous version of Firefox. I have tried using system restore but it doesn't work. I'm using windows XP. Can anyone help?

Starting with the release of Firefox 7, the previous versions of Firefox (4.0.x, 5.0.x and 6.0.x) are no longer maintained with Security and Stability updates. Firefox 3.6 is the last previous Firefox version that is still being maintained.
Firefox versions 4.0.x 5.0.x 6.0.x contain Security vulnerabilities that are known and could be exploited by some websites to gain unauthorized access to information or to disrupt critical processing. Only the Latest version 7.0.1 and an Older version 3.6.23 of Firefox are secure against these known vulnerabilities.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • N73: restore doesn't work after firmware update

    Hello!
I just made a firmware update to my N73 with NSU, and the procedure completed with no errors.
Just before the update I made a backup with the application in the phone menu; the app wrote a backup.arc file in the MMC.
After the update I tried to restore the backup via the same app.
Here's the problem: the app seems to work (but the "restore" lasts just 1-2 seconds), the phone reboots, but nothing is restored.
Googleing aroung I found a solution: buy the Noki 1.7 software, extract SMS, contacts and files from the backup.arc, and put everything back on the phone...
Is there another solution that doesn't involve buying this 3rd party software?
    TIA

    The phone is working well...
I have been searching in internet, and there'a a lot of people with the same problem. Everybody tells to use PC Suite to backup... if I only knew before.

  • Songs replays over and over, tried restoring doesn't work.

With my new iPod shuffle sometimes it replays songs and I had to skip, but then sometimes it can continuously loop the same song over and over.
I restored my iPod to factory settings, deleted and reapplied the entire library to my iPod and it still does this.
Anyone else having this issue and can anyone help?

  • Installed 4.0.1, bookmarks not migrated, backup exists but restore doesn't work. How do I get my bookmarks back?

I upgraded to 4.0.1 today. After upgrading, I looked for my bookmarks but they were not present. I attempted to use the restore function. It appears to work, but still no bookmarks. I looked at my profile directory and the file I attempted to restore from under 'bookmarkbackups' has valid data in it. Why does restore not work? How do I get my bookmarks back?

    Woo,
I reinstall the firefox (3.6.4 ) again. Then all of the above problems are gone. So, no need to worry....

  • White Screen - Hard reset, restore doesn't work

So my iphone just passed it's warranty by 11 days. It is a 3G 8gb. I noticed the white screen thing and googled it. I found out how to do a reset with the home button and power, did that. Fixed it for a brief few minutes. Then white screen again. So I did the restore in itunes. Fixed it for a few minutes, then white screen again. All the functions of my phone work fine. I don't think I have ever dropped the thing. It has a hard case. Anyways, i can play with the phone by trying to bend it and the white screen disappears and goes back to normal. Then the slightest touch will set it back to white. Very strange, its very touch sensitive and I can manipulate it to get it to clear sometimes. My question is what is causing this and can it be fixed without going through apple? I pretty much have to buy a new phone, but upgrade to 3Gs isn't possible for 6 months. Thanks

If an iPhone reset, restoring with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup does not resolve it, I don't believe you have another option besides going through Apple.
Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange which will include a warranty.

  • Any possible way to fix error code 28? Restore doesn't work and my ipod won't turn on.

One day my ipod just wouldn't turn on and from then on it has been a total black out. I have plugged it into iTunes and it has notified me that the ipod is in recovery mode. I tried to restore the iPod but right at the end it brings up the error code of 28.
I don't want to fork out a lot of money for a new ipod, so if anybody could help me that would be great. Please share your knowledge if you have experienced this and know how to fix it, your help would be great. Thanks!

    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 37
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Note it could be a hardware problem If you can't get it to work an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT201412 Ipad2 has blank blue screen. Itunes does pick it up but restore doesn't work. Flashes yellow screen wit hlogo then back to blue screen.

Ipad 2 has blank blue screen. When turned off goes to black but when hold home/start buttons at same time, flashes on to blue screen. Itunes picks it up and have restored to no avail. Sometimes flashes yellow screen for few seconds with logo then back to blue screen. Have troubleshooted many times by restoring and plugging in/out with itunes but nothing works. Any other advice. It is only 14 months old so just out of warranty. Very frustrating that this expensive piece of well cared for equipment is so unstable and happens just as warranty ends.

  • On my netbook, I installed Firefox 4.0.1 from the Firefox web page. Now The netbook cannot open Firefox and cannot get onto the internet. System restore doesn't work. What can I do?

At the end of the installation process, I received the message that (some applications?) were not compatible with Firefox and should Firefox search for (some applications?) that would be compatible. I answered no. When the netbook restarted only one of the two user icons was showing. The user icon I use all the time was not showing. I did system restore to try to go back to before I did the installation and I got both icons, but Firefox does not open. Firefox does not open with either icon. I am using my old PC to write this message and I will not install the new version of Firefox on this PC until I can once again get onto the Net with my netbook. I hardly ever use this PC for using the Net.

I have formatted it and I've changed the path. When I restore it, it still asks me to restore it. I have a black fifth Gen black 30 gig iPod video.
Any help would be awesome! I'm getting crazy music withdraws. >_<

Try disconnecting from the network and then change the drive letter on the iPod to something much higher, like M or P or Z, so long as they don't conflict with any network storage.
