Restoring downloads/documents folder to the dock?

can anybody suggest how i might restore the downloads and documents folders to the dock? i accidentally removed them. and now, of course, i want them back. as they are not apps, i don't know how to get them back in the dock. many, many thanks.

This is easy.
Open up a Finder window and go to your Home directory (this is the one that bears your account name in the sidebar on the left of the Finder window.
Locate the Downloads and the Documents folders.
Now look at the Dock itself. Near the Trash you will find the Dock Divider Bar. Applications go on one side of that -- the side away from the Trash -- and folders and minimized windows go on the other side -- the side near the Trash.
Now just click and drag each of these two folders, Downloads and Documents, into the portion of the Dock on the side of the divider bar near the Trash.
The original folder will stay where it was and a new icon (a pointer to the folder) will appear in the Dock. Since this is a folder you just put in the Dock, it will automatically be shown as a "Stack" view.
To remove an item from the Dock, click and drag it away from the Dock. The icon will go "poof" and vanish. The "real" item, the thing the Dock pointer pointed to, will not be altered.
You can also click and drag icons around within the Dock to get them into the order you prefer. Just keep them on the correct side of the Dock Divider bar.

  • I have added the Documents folder to the Dock, however when I save a document it doesn't appear in the Documents folder on the Dock, only the Documents folder in the Finder.  Is this a quirk, so am I doing something wrong?

I like having my Documents folder on the Dock so I added the Documents folder from the Finder to the Dock.  When I save a document to the Documents folder, the saved document appears in the Documents folder from the Finder and not in the Documents folder on the Dock.  Why is this happening?  And how can I change this?

Oooh. I never new that was there.

  • I deleted the document folder from the dock how do i get it back?

    Help!
I deleted the document folder on the dock and now i can't seem to get it back!
does anyone know how to do this?
    thanks

Open Finder>Users>Home Name and drag the Documents folder to the right hand of the Dock.

  • Can't drop files from Downloads or Documents folder on the dock to any other Finder window

I have been downloading some files and dragging/dropping them into another folder for the last 30 minutes or so. They're downloading to the default Downloads folder, and then I've been dragging them from that folder in the Dock, which opens like a fan, and dropping them into another folder (my Documents folder) in an open Finder window.
All of a sudden, I can't drop files from the Downloads fan anywhere else. I also tested, and can't drop files from my Documents folder or my Screenshots folder, two other folders that are on the right side of my dock and open up like a fan.
I can drag them, but when I hover over the folder that I want to drop them into, nothing happens. If I let go, they just stay in their original folder (the Downloads folder).
So basically something happened with the folders on the right side of the dock that's not letting me drop the files anywhere else from the Dock. If I open the folders in their own Finder window, I can drag/drop just fine. It just won't let me do it from the Dock as I had been.
Any ideas? I've tried restarting as well as sleeping/waking as I saw recommended on here, but no luck.

Open Finder, press Option key, select Go > Library, open Preferences, delete com.apple.dock.plist and reboot

  • I seem to have deleted my stacks download folder from the dock. How do I get it back?

  • Cannot find the downloads file icon in the dock

How do I get the downloads file icon into the dock? I can only access it by going into the Finder.

Drag the Downloads folder back to it's spot next to the Trash can and it will make a "alias" there again.

  • Can you animate a folder in the dock?

I am looking for a way to animate the dropbox folder in the dock, when something has been dropped in it by other users over a network.
Is there a third party software/plug-in for this?

If you usually keep that folder empty, then there is a way. Right-click or Control-click the icon of the folder, then choose Stack from the Display As section in the popup menu that appears.
Then, whenever anything is dropped into that folder its icon should change from generic folder to an icon resembling the item dropped into it.
Note - this will work only if you keep the folder empty. "Stack" mode will always display an icon other than that of a folder if there is something in the folder.
I keep my Downloads folder empty and set to Stack. This way I know immediately if I accidentally initiated a download, or if something else did.

  • App folder in the dock doesn't contain all the apps in the main Applications folder

I have noticed recently that the App folder in the dock doesn't contain all the apps in the main Applications folder (the correct one under Macintosh HD).
This occurs whether in list, grid, automatic or whatever.
I've removed the apps folder from the dock and dragged in the current one and yet it doesn't show all the apps from the source folder.
Any ideas on why this is happening or how I can fix it?
There are 55 items in the Apps folder but only 51 are shown in the folder located in the dock.
If I drag it over (as per normal operation), all 55 should appear right?
Is there a limit on how many can be displayed?
Can the grid spacing/icon size be changed to fit them all in if that's the case?
Just dunno why this is happening???
    Cheers

Not sure this is what you want, but if you are an admin user, try this instead. Right-click on /Applications (Applications in the hard drive icon folder, the root folder, not Applications in your user) and select Make Alias, then drag that alias into the Dock to the right of or below the divider (the Trash icon is in that area.) Your Applications will now open from that alias in the Dock. The "original" alias will remain in that location, while creating a new Applications folder in the Dock. I have done this for my home folder, Utilities, and Downloads as well.

  • What does mean that a question mark continually shows up in place of the Document Folder on the desktop?

What does mean that a question mark continually shows up in place of the Document Folder on the desktop?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It means that this folder couldn't be found. Drag it off the Dock, and then, open a Finder window, go to the folder that contains it and drag it to the Dock, so it will show up

  • Is there a way of putting firefox bookmarks folder on the dock

Is there a way of putting firefox bookmarks folder on the dock. not just one bookmark. i have done that. but i want all of them in stack or something.. similar to how windows did it in the start menu. its annoying that you have to open firefox first to access your links.
i got my first imac yesterday and loving it!!! albeit the text is a bit small but i have found the zoom!
    thanks in advance

Perhaps you don't know how to bring icons into the Firefox  Toolbar. You can put many things up there, including Bookmarks. You can also remove an icon or rearrange the order of icons.
    From View>Toolbars>Customize
Here is the Bookmarks icon (next to the History icon) from which you can open all your bookmarks directly. And if you can remember a keyword, it will find that one, or any others that come up with that keyword. It's really quite convenient to use and will stay updated with any new bookmarks that are added.
This is showing the Bookmarks open, which can be closed by clickng on the small x.

  • Mountain Lion app not downloading, just sits in the dock 'waiting'.

    Hi everyone,
A few weeks ago I downloaded the mountain lion software from the app store. However, the download just sits in the dock 'waiting' and doesn't download at all. It eventually disapears from my dock and tells me that there has been an error. I have emailed and rang customer support, however, I get passed on to different departments with each staff member saying 'this isn't what our department should be dealing with'. I have been told that it is to do with my internet provider (BT), but when I took the iMac (2010) back to university where I have a different internet provider, it still didn't download! (My iMac has got all the requirements for Mountain Lion).
Any help will be much appreciated as I am really getting no where with customer support.
    Thanks!

  • How to make a custom folder on the dock open (not in the finder)

I want to be able to add a folder to the dock and open it like the 3 preset folders open in the little window, not in a finder window. Any ideas?

yeah sorry i was trying to make a smart folder into a stack but after further research i found that its not possible.
starting to feel like the only upgrades that Lion brings are the new gestures and mission control since i keep seeing beachballs like never before.

  • How do I unlock My Documents folder in the hard-drive with another PC?

I have a 3000 series j100 desktop, 3 days ago restarted on its own and can't boot anymore, no keyboard, no mouse and no monitor signal sent from the pc.
I took the drive out and use it as an external drive to my laptop, but it asks for a password before I can access My Documents folder.
I believe it's the windows xp login password that's needed, but there's no field on that pop-up box to enter any password it asks.
I know my windows login password, but I don't know if that's what really needed and how to use it to unlock the folder.
Is there another way to access the folder, or do I need to get the computer working again to access the folder in the drive?
I also do have some encrypted files inside My Documents folder that I created with windows when the pc was working.
The encryption comes along with windows xp. When you right-click a file, you choose properties and advance option then apply the encryption, then the file name turns color to green.
Could it be the reason I can't access My Documents folder in the drive with another pc?
Please help, I need to know if I need to do a recovery job or is there an easy way to access My Documents folder in the drive with another computer.

  • Question about documents folder in the "stacks"

Hey everyone. Here is my question.....In my documents folder that is in the stacks section there is one labeled iChats (Which of course stores my iChat conversations)
I would like to know if I can remove it from stacks but leave it on my hard drive? Basically, does everything I put in my documents folder in the HD show up in the stacks documents folder? Is there another place where I can put some of these items that I do not want to appear in the stacks?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Not that one, if you want iChat to save the chats
