Restoring factory settings OSX 10.6.3 - MacBook Pro (2010)

Greetings,
I'm having some difficulty restoring the factory settings on my MacBook Pro.
It was shipped with OSX 10.6.3 (I'm pretty sure...). I have misplaced the OSX installation discs that were originally supplied with the computer, but have purchased a replacement from Apple (OSX 10.6).
The problem that I have is that the computer doesn't seem to be able to read the disc! I erased the HD, and followed the steps on this page: OS X: How to erase and install - Apple Support. The disc drive spins up, which is promising, but then it stops and nothing happens! I get stuck on the grey start-up screen.
I have upgraded the RAM to 8GB (using Corsair RAM now from memory, not Apple RAM), but everything else is as supplied from the factory. And I have checked the new disc for dirt and scratches etc. - it appears fine. I've also tested the disc drive using other discs, which it can read with no problems.
I have since done an "internet recovery" so I can use the computer again with OSX 10.9, but I need to recover some data from some files that won't open in the new OS (hence the desire to revert to the factory OS temporarily).
Has anyone had a similar problem before and found a solution?
Thanks in advance,
Wage

Hello again,
Okay, now I have an OSX 10.6.3 installation disc (legitimate copy). I have tried reformatting again and had the same problem - disc drive spins up, stops, and I get stuck on the grey screen with the apple logo, I even left it for over three hours in the hope that it was just taking its time to no avail. I also double checked the version of the OS that I tried previously and it turns out that was 10.6.3 as well!
Have tried calling Apple Support, much to my frustration - yes, it is a legitimate copy of OSX. No thank you, I don't need another disc; I've already got two. Yes, I have tried formatting the computer, twice now. And I have tried google as well, but that hasn't really helped either - it sounds like it should be easy according to everything I've come across on google!
About the only thing that I haven't tried is using another Mac to install 10.6.3 to an external drive as this is my only computer.
I notice that I get a message saying that I "can't use this version of the application "Install Mac OS X.app" with this version of OS X" when I try to open the installer on the new disc through the finder. I presume this is because I have OSX 10.9.5 installed currently, and that it is not linked to the issue that I am having when trying to re-install? The reason I mention this is because one suggestion that Apple Support gave that may have some merit was that I do still have a "recovery partition" on my HD... (Held command + R at startup, and I got all the screens that I was supposed to). Is it possible that this recovery partition has the most recent Install Mac OS X.app stuck on it, even after formatting? Personally I doubt it, but maybe there is something in it...
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Regards and thanks again,
Wage

  • How do I restore factory settings on my MacBook Air?

I have sold my MacBook Air (bought in August 2011) and I need to restore factory settings.  Can someone please help?

As quoted from apple member Kappy
Boot from the Recovery HD by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and "R" keys until the computer starts from the Recovery HD. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
At this point all your data are securely removed. You can shut down the computer or reinstall Lion from the main menu.

  • Will restoring factory settings restore the os?

If I restore factory settings to my macbook (running Lion), will it restore the os to Leopard?

Use the Mac OS X disc that came with your computer. Insert it, press C key on boot, go to Utilities > Disk Utility, erase the drive and install Mac OS X. First, make a backup

All my music was on prior to syncing. The sync deleted all my music. I can now no longer add any music. I have the "sync music" checked. Restoring factory settings did not work. Any thoughts?

When you synced with iTunes It would have tried to replace the music on the iPhone with what is on the computer. which is what happens when you sync with iTunes.
If the songs are purchased you can re-downloaded them Pretty easily. You mentioned that you still see the songs and that you could not play them. Do they have a Cloud symbol next to them? If so this means that you can download them but that they are not on the device.

I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS6.  In the process, I ran into a problem and had to restore factory settings.  After syncing the phone, I see that 218 apps need to be updated. When selecting "update all," it says "Cannot Download.  There is not enough available local storage to download these items.  You can manage your local device storage usage in Settings."
How can this be the case when I haven't changed any apps from before updrading to iOS6, and I don't have any music yet on the phone?  Why is it telling me there is not enough local space?

    Hi RileyAvaCadenRiver,
If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS7, you will need to update iTunes on your computer to iTunes 11.1 or newer for it to correctly recognize the iPhone. You may find the following link helpful:

  • Is there ANY way possible to MANUALLY restore factory settings for an ipod classic, FROM the device ITSELF (as opposed to restoring from iTunes or forcing a reformat elsewhere)?

I have 3 iPods:  1 Touch and 2 Classics.  The Touch and 1 of the Classics are both working fine; the other Classic is not showing up in iTunes, My Computer, or in Device Manager.  While I CAN do a simple reset, it accomplishes nothing, and I am UNABLE to get the faulty Classic into "disk mode".
Based on what I've encountered thus far, I have a suspicion that my faulty Classic somehow thinks it's formatted for the Mac, as I DO see the serial # and I do NOT see "Windows Format" in the About screen on the ipod itself.  Is that even POSSIBLE?  I have never used a Mac, but that's what the documentation I've read on this Support Site have lead me to believe.
The faulty Classic will charge ONLY in a wall charger; it clearly wants nothing to do with my laptop as it refuses to stand up and be recognized in iTunes or in My Computer....why??!!??    I DID try all of the other obvious troubleshooting items; I tried different USB ports, different cords, different laptops, and even different ipods.....BUT....all is well with everything else BUT for this pain-in-the-@$$ ipod.
IDEALLY.....since my ipod refuses to make itself available for me to "restore factory settings" via iTunes, the way it SHOULD be handled....., I'm wondering if there are any hackers out here that know of a way to FORCE a MANUAL restoration of factory settings of the ipod, via super-secret "key strokes" on the ipod itself (and not via the iTunes software that is curently useless for this particular ipod)....?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!  Without your assistance, my Classic ipod remains an expensive door stop and/or paper weight.  It's behavior at this point is nothing shy of rude and inconvenient!

There is no way to restore/reformat the device without connecting it to a PC or Mac.
Have you checked the iPod's dock connector for signs of bent/damaged/corroded pins that could prevent a full connection with your PC?  If there is any lodged debris, take a can of compressed air to it to blow it all out.

i selected restore factory settings on my ipod touch but now after restart it stuck on apple icon what will i do anybody help me out plz, even it's not appering on itunes on my p.c

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac?

How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac OS X 10.6.8?
I have been told you can do this without the Installation CD. I also do not remember the installation CD when i got the laptop. If it's possible then please someone let me know! if not then how can i get a new CD to do this?
my computer keeps freezing on me at random times, and i have tried taking the laptop to my college tech support and also Best Buy and they said they can't do anything and that i need to try resetting the mac.

You may not remember the installer disks but they came in the box. Your profile shows you are running 10.6.6 Snow Leopard. To restore back to factory settings you need those disks. That said to go that route may be unnecessry. Stay away from Best Buy tech people. They know nothing. Without the disks you do a repair disk to see if that helps:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.

  • Trying To Restore Factory Settings

(Apologies for this double post, trying to find my way to the right forum)
    Hi all,
My iPod has been getting worse over the last month, and now won't play anything.
I thought it might be time to wipe it clean and restore factory settings. I downloaded updater from here:
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Ran the updater. It seems to have erased everything on the iPod, without installing the update. The iPod no longer mounts on desktop. iPod screen seems to be asking me to plug iPod in to wall socket. iPod was fully charged before update procedure.
I just want to wipe iPod clean of any corruption, install the latest iPod software, and then will reimport tunes.
I've always charged iPod battery from iMac, don't think we have wall adapter, and don't understand why it is needed now.
My best guess is I have the iPod with Clickwheel. iPod was a gift from friend, no packaging. Manual does not identify iPod.
Basically, I seem to have killed my iPod, and will surely be grateful for any advice. Thanks!

Thanks for your report Ken, maybe we can figure it out if we work together.
I'm all Mac here, so Vista may not be the issue.
Do you have the actual wall adapter? I don't have it, and never needed it, but looks like I'll have to try to buy one to get past this.
Regrettably, the manual is worthless on this issue.
As best I can figure it, the restore process wiped the ipod clean, but didn't reinstall the needed software. So now the ipod can't talk to the computer?
Dunno. We need the help of somebody who knows more than us, or knows where to find such help.
Thanks to anybody who can point us in the right direction!

    See Here  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
You may need to try this More than Once...
Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps...
But... if the Device has been Modified... this will Not necessarily work.

  • I am getting a "not delivered" when I try to send a photo from my Ipad or iPhone via iMessage. I can receive photos in iMessage and I can send and receive photos other than with iMessage. I have tried restoring factory settings etc but no luck.

I am getting a "not delivered" when I try to send a photo from my Ipad or iPhone via iMessage. I can receive photos in iMessage and I can send and receive photos other than with iMessage. I have tried restoring factory settings etc but no luck. Is anyone else having this problem please?

I've been having this problem too, but here's the catch: originally it was only with my dad, and only sometimes.  Now it's dad and husband, every time!  Pix go through, via imessage, to everyone else, and they go through to dad/husband if I "send as text" after it fails.
And the other annoying thing- the blue bar will run all the way, and it will say "delivered".  So I close out of imessage. When I reopen it again, the "delivered" has changed to "not delivered" with the red exclamation point.  I just googled "imessage not sending photos" and founds TONS of people with the same problem, but no solutions.  (I have rebooted phone, reset network settings, with no luck.  I even had to backup/delete/restore my whole phone the other day for a different reason, and hoped that would fix it, but now it won't send to my dad OR my husband (who is on not just the same carrier, but the same family plan as me)

  • Formatting HD/restore factory settings?

I have an Imac G3 500mhz, currently running panther. I have lost my panther disks, however i have tiger disks. I want to either use the tiger disks to erase the HD and/or load tiger, or erase everything accet panther from the HD. However the imac does not have a DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive, but that only turns on when the imac is running - disabling me from booting up from the Tiger disks. Is there another way to load the tiger disks, possibly through my 20" core duo, or restore factory settings on the imac without a disk?
Would there be a way of delaying startup, so that the external DVD drive had a change to startup, and then run the tiger disk?
    Thanks in advance, Feron.
Imac 20" Intel Pentium 4 Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

PowerPC Macs (like the iMac G3) can't boot from USB drives - so that may well be the issue. Intel Macs can boot from USB drives.
① You could exchange your Tiger DVD for set of CDs.
    or
② Using a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable connect the two machines together. Place the Tiger Retail install DVD into the iMac Intel.
Go to  > System Preferences > Start-Up Disk > and click "Target Disk Mode". The iMac Intel will boot with a purple screen with a yellow Firewire logo.
Then restart/turn-on the iMac G3. Hold down the Option key (marked as 'alt' on many UK keyboards) and select the Tiger Install DVD and click the right arrow. (It takes longer than you think it should to load this screen so bear with it - it's checking for networked drives.)
Then the iMac G3 should start up with the Tiger DVD and lead you through installation. Remember using this retail disk you won't get any of the bundled OS 9 applications that came with the iMac G3 in the first place.
Remember you must use a Black coloured Tiger disk. The grey one that came with your iMac Intel won't work.

  • When i plug my iphone into the laptop it now says "cannot read iphone, restore factory settings "

help! I dont want to lose everything as I know its not all backed up. Tried doing that last week and it got to the end and then said cant back up :-/

Hack or Jail Break? Whats that?!!  I have had my phone 16months with no other problem except the update i did which made the middle button stop working, although it was resolved (pretty much still sometimes get a prob!) with the next update Apple did.. After that I have been reluctant to plug iphone in, hence not backing up as regularly as I should do.
The error I get is "Itunes cannot read the iphone, go to the summary tab and restore factory settings.
Am resigned to that fact i have got to do it now :-(  how do i get any data that was backed up, back on to my phone once i hae restored the settings?
    thanks for replying
