Hello gail kovler2,
The following article provides the steps necessary for using Migration Assistant to transfer your data from a Time Machine backup.

Downgraded OS from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, how to get Aperture to work on Mountain Lion? My iMac (Intel) is older and Apple told me  this model doesn't handle Mavericks well, recommended I step back to Mountain Lion, which was where Aperture was originally used. Aperture was upgraded when I installed Mavericks, need to go back to older version. How?

    Erase disk drive
Restore backup made prior to upgrade

  • Switch back from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I have tried to switch back from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, due to the battery drain problem, following the steps included in the tutorial https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6162
The problem is that when I format the HD and I click on 'Install' it appears a big screen which says 'Install Mavericks". I want to install Mountain Lion (that I have in the pendrive), or at least Lion, but I am unable to do that, there is no option to choose any other operating system. Is there a way to rollback to any previous system?
If not, would it be possible to extract the HD from the computer, format it completely (including the recovery partition) in another computer, install it again in the original computer and perform a clean install from my pendrive?
I have no external drive with Time Machine or similar.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have got a Time Machine backup created in OS X Mountain Lion, connect the external drive with the backup, hold the Option key while your computer is starting and choose the external drive. Then, select the option to restore the Time Machine backup and follow the steps. Note that your hard drive will be erased.
If your Mac came with Lion or Mountain Lion, you can use Internet Recovery by holding down Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting up. Use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X or restore the backup

  • Replace mavericks with Mountain Lion

I'm thinking of buying a Mac mini, it will have Mavericks installed but some of my software won't run on Mavericks but will on Mountain Lion. I see Mountain Lion is being sold at a reasonable price.
So if I replace Mavericks with Mountain Lion is that going to work (guy in the Apple Store thought it was a bad idea) and will I be able to re install Mavericks at a later date and will I have to buy it again?

You could check when there is more than one model
Mini in the Special Deals refurbish store page, and
ask Sales if one from two years ago can run Mt Lion.
Previous model years are sometimes a better bet,
though a few more recent Macs still could boot from
a previous OS X version, don't bet on it. I'd ordered
a refurb Mac from the Apple Store some time back
and a capability stated to be functional wasn't in it.
There should be more information on the capability
of a recent/offered model Mini, if it could run Mt Lion.
You'd probably need to try to install it in a separate
external hard disk drive enclosure, if possible, so as
to keep the original Mavericks intact. Even if it works.
These use Internet/Recovery to restore an original OS X
as well as internet to update/upgrade it. No DVDs.
PS: you could try & make a bootable recovery USB per
advice in this third-party article, though it may not help
resolve, update, or change new computer to run old OSX.

This kind of technical question relies on hard to access
information that would be arrived at, here, by trial & error.
    Good luck

  • Can't install from application install dvd and i can't update to 10.6.8 after i restore my macbook pro from mountain lion

can't install from application install dvd and i can't update to 10.6.8 after i restore my macbook pro from mountain lion. when restart and i press command it still has recovery mountain lion show on my screen.

What model is the MBP? Did it come with OS 10.6 or a later OS? Is the install DVD one that came with it or something else?
You can't run an OS older than Mac on it.
But if came with 10.6 installed & you have the system discs, you should be able to erase the drive & reinstall the original OS.

  • Dual boot: OS X Mavericks and Mountain Lion?

    Hi there,
searching the internet I found a lot of video tutorials and discussions about the proper way to partition your hard drive so you can boot OS X Mavericks from your Mountain Lion system.
However, having installed Mavericks right after its release, I'm trying to install Mountain Lion as a partition on my computer. That's because I need to run some apps which aren't compatible with Mavericks.
As the Mountain Lion installer consistently tells me that it wasn't possible to run the system on my computer I wonder whether there's a way to boot both, Mavericks and Mountain Lion once you have installed Mavericks.
    I'm grateful for any advice.
    Thanks,
    Lukas

If you are trying to run the Mountain Lion installer from Mavericks, it will probably tell you it can't.  I'm currently booted from Mountain Lion and tested the Lion installer and it told me no.
What you can do is make a Mountain Lion USB installer and boot from it.  Now you can select the partition you created and install mountain Lion onto it.  When the installer is finished (it will boot once at least), you'll be in Mountain Lion.  To change back to Mavericks, open system preferences and select startup drive, there you can chose what starts at the next boot.
Instructions for making a Mountain Lion USB are here

do i need to make an back-up of my files before i get mountain lion?

Even though the Mac OS X updaters are very smooth and rarely run into problems, it is always wise to make a clean, and bootable  backup before performing a major update.  When things go wrong they go wrong in the worst possible way

  • Isolated dual boot with OS mavericks and mountain lion

I just created a dual boot between mavericks and mountain lion (1 physical drive with two partitions) but I'm having troubles where they each see each other.  Bin/ lib/ etc are fine (i think) as they are added via environment vars but it seems as though the spotlight privacy directories are shared.  For instance, I thought I could simply add the other partition to the Spotlight Privacy list, ie while using mountain lion add /Volumes/Mavericks to the privacy list.  However, when I added the volume in one, it also appears in the other.  Another issue I've encountered is that while compiling on ML, I was getting errors complaining about the 10.9 sdk.
So, can anyone advise on the proper way to isolate these two operating systems with a dual boot scenario?
    Thanks
    Adam

Create two partitions on the hard drive. Install each OS on its own partition. This will only work if the computer can be booted from either version.

  • Installing Mavericks over Mountain Lion

I try to install Mavericks over Mountain Lion but keep getting this message: Unapproved caller, securityagent may only be invoked by Apple software.
Now I am stocked and cannot do anything :-(
    Any suggestions?

Dang! that was so NOT cool. Same thing happened to me and feel lucky to have found this thread.
I was stuck in a loop of that dialog popping up saying "Unapproved Caller". I tried clicking OK repeatedly and it still kept popping up.
Seeing the comment about Safe Mode, I took the gamble and held the power switch on my 27" iMac until it powered off, waited a moment, then pushed the power button again and as soon as the chime sound happened, held Shift key to boot in Safe Mode and that worked just like it did for @Bart2904.
How in the world would an average user know how to recover from such a situation - it would be bricked computer and a trip to Genius bar. Again, not cool.

  • Downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I am considering to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, and understand I would loose the maps app and some features... but is it worth it it so I dont have to continuously reboot my mac, so I can use a program every time ?
The problems I am having with mavericks, even when I have done a few tweaks , is that after running a few programs such as mail, safari, garageband  first and then loading photobooth... photobooth or any video app tends to lag , and the video is recorded lagging. A reboot fixes this if i start the program after reboot and not run any programs before.
Another issue is when I am doing my artwork, drawing in photoshop or manga studio... the pen tablet begins to lag as well, so I would have to save my work, reboot and then continue working until Mavericks starts misbehaving again.
This mac had its drive wipped clean before It became my personal mac, and I requested Mountain Lion, since I prefered it, but Mavericks was installed.
I dont mind Mavericks... its just this rebooting to fix or refresh system... is getting annoying when I need to get some artwork done.

    Hi qldfirey,
I'm sorry to hear that you have had issues trying to work with your Officejet 8600 since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9.
I have included a link to the full feature software for your Officejet 8600 printer in Mac OS X 10.9. If you still have the driver from your previous operating system loaded on your Mac please uninstall the printer before installing with the updated driver. I have included a link with the steps to uninstall.

  • Revert OSX from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I'm extremely disappointed and annoyed with Mavericks.  Mail isn't working and also having problems with my two additional displays.  System is so sluggish I can't accomplish anything.  How do I revert from Mavericks to Mountain Lion?  Thanks!

Mavericks is extremely zippy I suspect you either have a corrupt install, need to re-index spotlight or had an unstable install of ML to begin with. Once you have updated to Mavericks unless you have a bootable clone with ML still on it  you will have to troubleshoot Mavericks  until you have it right.
However my recommendation is you should probably post on the Mavericks forum and look for solutions there.

It's a Quicken file & I was able to open same.  Not used often & the copy in my documents wouldn't open, but it did in the Quicken app that's friendly with Mountain Lion.  Learned something new today!
