Restoring files from a reformatted time capsule disk?

This sounds dumb, I know. I had a time capsule that wasn't taking backups anymore - I had that stupid privileges issue, and I couldn't figure it out. So, I figured that I would just wipe the whole thing clean since I had backups of my backups. However, there was data on the drive from my wife, who was using it as a server for some reason, and NOT keeping the files on her computer. She blames it on the macbook air she used to use and not have any space on, and had no choice but to use the time capsule to keep things on.
At any rate, long story short, is there any way to restore data from a reformatted time capsule? I tried techtool, but it doesn't see the drive. I also tried plugging in via USB and ethernet, but no go. Would the genius bar be able to help?
THanks, folks.

Hi,
No.
If you have no back up you will need to re-rip them. You cannot use match to retrieve music that is not on your computer or external hard drive.
Match can only scan the music that is in your library.

  • Restore Files From an Old Time Machine Disk

Please forgive and send me a link if someone has already answered this but I need to restore files from an old Time Machine Volume to my current desktop.
    How do I do this?

control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". choose your old TM backup to browse and restore what you need. also, you can always open your TM drive in finder and copy what you need directly via finder.

Hi  can anyone give me a step by step guide as to how i retrieve just a few files from an old time capsule ?
    without a router  ?

but i desperetly need to grab these certain files
    please can anyone help?
can i use the usb port on the back of the time capsule
there must be a way  HELP PLEASE  many thanks

Don't panic we are working on it..
I am just avoiding Yosemite like the plague.. (plague on you Yosemite!!) .. as its networking is so bad it causes chaos on my network.. to all other devices.. even though only one device actually runs Yoyos!!
I am not sure how hard it is for you to go back to Mountain Lion.. or if you have a computer running ML on the network.. if so definitely use it.
What OS was last used by the MBP when you stopped using it or is it fully up to date. Is the computer in the network now? If so it is much easier to copy and paste the files from a live computer.
Did you encrypt the backup.. that would really mess things up or have an encrypted disk??
Have you used the normal TM tool in Yosemite to try and recover your files?? Or perhaps migrated the files.. this can work fine.. migration often being a better way of doing things.. although there are a few rules about using different user names.. etc.
There is another proviso here I must add.. Yosemite cannot see the backup quickly.. what I mean is that your backup is >500GB. Even by ethernet Yosemite version Time Machine can take more than 24hours just to index that.. maybe longer and by wireless a lot longer.. 3-5 times.. I do not know why spotlight is so slow in Yosemite.. but trust me.. it is pathetic. The yoyo got its string in a knot and seems to need to untangle it for every single file on the backup.
Be very patient if you open TM backup in Yosemite.. and definitely do this by ethernet not wireless.. otherwise you might die of old age beforehand.

  • Transfering files from an older time capsule to a newer one

What is the easiest way to transfer files and settings from an older time capsule to a newer one (4th gen)? I'd like to move my backup files from my old TC to my new one without the hassle of occupying my computer overnight.
    Message was edited by: Iwannhs

The TC has only one backup method.. an archive of the whole disk to a USB drive suitably formatted and plugged into it.. otherwise everything passes through your computer. There is no other way.
Copying of the sparsebundles is often difficult and extremely slow.. you would certainly want both TC plugged in by ethernet.
When you say transfer settings... what settings are you transferring.. ??
This part I am not sure of.. you can make a backup of settings from the old TC.. but whether it is a good idea even to use those on the new one.. I kinda doubt it.
You are better treating the new TC as a new device.. and start fresh backup to it. Either archive or just keep the old TC for 6months and if you haven't required any old files by then it is unlikely you will.

  • How do I transfer files from PC to Time Capsule?

I have an old PC and a new MacBook and I bought the Time Capsule to transfer files from the PC to the Mac. I was able to set up the Time Capsule using the Mac (had trouble trying with the PC) and it seems to be working fine. Both computers have wireless internet access through it, and I figured out how to transfer files from the Mac. The problem is that I don't know how to transfer files from the PC to the Time Capsule. It's not appearing as an icon in "My Computer," which was what I thought would happen so I could drag files onto it. I'm not sure how to get into the Time Capsule hard drive. This is critical, as it was the primary reason I bought it, in addition to the router and backup features. Any help would be appreciated.

Further update: I think I solved my problem. I changed the access on Time Capsule disk to allow guests to read/write, and I turned off my firewall, which I think was blocking access to the Time Capsule, since I kept getting messages that said there was a Net BIOS access issue. So now my Compaq is happily uploading my iTunes library to the Time Capsule, which the Mac is able to access. Yay!!!
Thankfully what my friend in Manchester suggested does not appear to be true, as I've already migrated some files from the PC to the Time Capsule to the Mac with no problems, including Word, JPG and MP3 files.

  • Why can't I copy files from Finder to Time Capsule?

I'm trying to do basic copy functions from Finder to Time Capsule and I can't copy/paste or drag/drop any files from my MacBook to TC. The paste function is greyed out. TC is connected and does backups fine from Time Machine. Is there some setting I need to change?

You are trying to add a folder into the network...
You have to click on "shared" in HD then the name of time capsule and a window will open with a folder called "Time Capsule." That window is the network, not the time capsule. You have to click on the "Time Capsule" folder to enter it. You will see a file ending in "arsebundle," that is your backup. You can now add another folder.

  • How do you backup files from pc to time capsule?

Is there an easy way to save files from a PC to a Time Capsule?

    Copy and paste.
A TC is a network drive.. but it is able to be accessed as any drive in windows explorer..
    Open windows explorer and type
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress into the address bar. (replacing obviously with the actual name (it better not have spaces) or IP address of the TC.
You can then access the TC hard disk. Create a directory on the TC or copy one to it.
If you cannot open the TC you haven't set up windows with bonjour for windows.. or setup the TC with SMB names.
Your heading and text are different.. save and backup are different.. backup to TC use a backup software.. eg Genie TIme Line.. Macrium Reflect.. vast majority of paid for backup software. I don't know one that cannot use network drive. Only MSbackup is so stupid.
It has to be able to connect to TC .. home edition vista and win7 MSBackup cannot backup to network drives. .so it is useless.. but it was useless .. buy a proper backup utility. This is almost enough to make you abandon windows.. why should home editions not be able to backup to network drives.. so Bill can make more money selling you pro or ultimate.

  • Can't Copy Files from Downloads to Time Capsule

Hi all, this is my first post so please be gentle.
I am experiencing a rather interesting problem with my Time Capsule. Currently it is accesed by 2 macs daily (an iMac and a Mac Pro) and we both access the files on the time capsule simultaneously (obviously not the same files, but we plunk around in there at the same time).
The other user on the network sometimes (read: not always) has a problem copying a file from downloads (lately it was a .pdf file) into the time capsule--the file will drag over, act like it is being copied, and then we hear the bong sound that Macs make when they paste something over. The file name will flash and then go away. Nothing is in the folder.
I have tried to copy to another folder to no avail, as well as disconnect from the Time Capsule and then reconnect. Nothing seems to solve the problem. We CAN however open the file from downloads and perform a Save As, placing it in the folder we would like it to be in. When we do that, it works like a charm.
Obviously we can work around it but it gets to be a bit tedious to have to Save As all the time. I appreciate any and all help! Thanks!

This exact problem popped up recently.. i will need to go back and look at the post.
    I need more info.
What OS level are on both Macs?? Your listed OS is 10.6.7. Is that still the case? Is it the same on both Macs?
When you copy a file over, can the other Mac find it, even if the original one cannot?
I hope you are using a new directory you created for this file sharing.. Can you remember which Mac created the directory?? Can you try creating a new directory from the Mac with issues and see if the problem still exists.. I feel sure the issue is some permissions thing.. but I can remember the previous thread suggested it wasn't.
I also want you to look in the TC log when this happens and see if there is an AFP disconnection or some other issue coming up at that moment.

  • Can iTunes Match download files from a crashed time capsule retroactively

Ok, so I'm a devoted itunes / apple user.  I had my time capsule for 2+ years with no issue, but it recently died and I had to get a new one.  Unfortunately, I had my iTunes library pull from the time capsule instead of my laptop hard drive and now a lot of my music is lost.  I can get anything that I had originally purchased via iTunes with iCloud download, but anything burned / ripped to the library is lost.
The track names, album names, etc. are still listed in itunes when I open it, but it cannot access the folder to pull the audio.  My question, is there a way to access these files since they are in my library without having to hunt all of these down and ripping them again?  If I were to purchase iTunes Match, would it download these files so that I could have them without doing the hunting and ripping?

    Hi,
    No.
If you have no back up you will need to re-rip them. You cannot use match to retrieve music that is not on your computer or external hard drive.
Match can only scan the music that is in your library.

  • How to Restore Files From Backup HD/Time Machine

I want to restore data from external HD, which backed up with Time Machine, onto new internal HD. If I restore from date prior to 10.6.1 upgrade (which resulted in HD failure) will I be restoring from 10.5? Do I install Leopard on new HD first? Both internal and external HDs corrupted by upgrade but professional diagnostics indicate data on external HD can be accessed.

Could you explain a little more about what you meant by this? The update to 10.6.1 should not corrupt an otherwise OK HD. It is probably worth the effort to try to figure out what caused this in case it is something that would continue to affect the HD's after the restore.

  • I need to find where Firefox bookmarks were kept or how to restore them from a Mac Time Capsule.

My Mac died. I got a new one. I installed a new copy of firefox 4 on the new Mac ( MacBook Pro ) I have been manually reinstalling selected data from a backup on a time capsule. I don't know where to find the old Firefox bookmarks, or what they may be called, or what folder they are in. I would love to recover them!

  • Restore files from last Time Machine backup after HD erase and install

I just had to do an "erase and install" ... trying to restore files from my last Time Machine backup but after completing the Airport Utility setup / configure steps, it says "waiting to restart" for a few minutes and then says it cannot find TIme Capsule after restart (though TC never restarted). I'm pretty desperate to get my files back as it's Sunday night and my business needs to be up and running by morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated ... even if it's saying I need to take TC into a Mac store to have them retrieve my files.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • How-to move time machine backup from an old Time Capsule to a new one?

As written on the title, I need to move my old backup from an old 500GB to a new dual-band 2TB Time capsule, but I have not found any hint.
I've found many suggestions how to move the backups between externa HD; from external HD to a Time Capsule; between Time Capsule and external HD.
    But nothing about my needs.
Someone can give me an how-to or at least some hint?
    Many thanks to every one!!!

I was able to do that by using the Finder to copy the "sparsebundle" files from the old Time Capsule to temporary storage, replacing the Time Capsule, then copying the "sparsebundle" files from the temporary storage area to the new Time Capsule. If your temporary storage is limited and you have more than one "sparsebundle" file to migrate, you can copy one at a time.
AirPort Utility also has an "Archive" function that you could use instead of a Finder copy.
I believe I saw recently a method of copying directly from one Time Capsule to another, although I can't find it at the moment. If that option makes sense for you, I'll look further.

  • Unable to delete files from Time Capsule disk

A while back I copied my user folder from my iMac on to my Time Capsule disk, which is mounted as a drive on my iMac's desktop. I now want to delete that copy. After some struggling with locked files I have managed to get it so that all I have left is a small hierarchy of folders containing no files. When I try to delete any of these folders, though, I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Info says that I have read & write privileges to every folder in the hierachy.
Can anyone suggest a way that I can get rid of these few remaining folders? They are really bugging me!

Some of you are going to love this!!
Ok, after talking with someone at Apple, I was reminded of a simple Unix Command to do the job, even on Time Capsule. Here's what worked for me:
Time Capsule is connected to my Mac, via an Ethernet cable-- I don't know if this matters or not, maybe it will work over the wireless connection too, let me know!
You'll need to pull up Terminal in Applications > Utilities. It's a dangerous tool that Unix and Linux people use with skill all the time, but you have to be careful, cause it will cause permanent changes-- that is what I want here, of course. Just be extremely careful, ok? You have been warned.
    type "cd /Volumes"
    press Return
Now you're in the "Volumes" folder
type "ls" (as in the letter L)
    press Return
You should see your Time Capsule folder (whatever you named it)-- type "cd " and that particular name
Navigate till you can type "ls" and you can see the folder you are trying to delete.
Then, the command that worked for me is this:
(Please double check that "myFolderToDelete" is indeed the one that you want to delete!)
    sudo rm -rfd myFolderIWantToDelete
After a few seconds for the hard drive in the time capsule to spin up, it worked! Yea!
In fact, to be safe, if I were you, I would even go into Finder first and try to rename that folder, call it "myFolderToDelete" !!!
Why didn't I try this before? I've used Terminal, I should have thought of it before! bad nerd!
But the important thing is, problem solved .
A few things to note is that I was trying to delete a folder full of "Locked" files. If I wanted to delete several locked files that are not currently in a folder, I could make a new folder, and drag those files into it... now you have a folder you can delete. Just rename it "toBeDeleted" or something like that.
Finally, note that I am not currently using Time Machine (the automated backup program) with this Time Capsule, so I don't know if it will delete the Time Machine backup -- haven't tried that yet.
    Good Luck!
