Restoring files on external harddrive to my laptop

Hi , I'm trying to restore my files on my external harddrive back to my laptop. I backed up the files using the recovery manager as I needed to put my laptop back to factory settings. The problem I'm now having is that I can't restore the files back to my laptop. When I first tried, (after taking the laptop back to factory settings,),I clicked on the BACKUP.01.exe file, I was first asked to allow permission and then the recovery manager started. I was told what files would be moved over and then a percentage bar came up and it started running. After a few minutes my laptop shut down. When I got my laptop back up running, I tried it again, I clicked on the BACKUP.01.exe, I was asked permission again but this time when clicked allow, nothing happened. I've recovered my laptop back to factory settings again, I then went through the same procedure as before, I clicked on the BACKUP.01.exe file, I was asked to allow permission, when I clicked allow the recovery manager started. The percentage bar came up again and after a few minutes my laptop shut down again. It's an exact repeat of what happened before. I've tried restoring in Safe Mode, when I click on the backup file nothing happens, I don't even get asked permission. I've tried the solution which was shown on the HP website titled ' how to backup files using recovery manager '. I had to copy the MINWINPC file to my desktop, I done that and still nothing. "HELP" John

Check the HP website for a possible upgrade the the recovery manager software. Hopefully this will cure the problem in restoring your data.
Go to the Link below, tick the "download drivers and software" radio button, then type in you model number in the search box and then hit enter, when the page loads select you Operating System. Your drivers page will appear. Look under "Software-Solutions"
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support_task.html
Also, try opening Recovery manager first, then select the backup file from there, rather than executing the backup exe file. If it fails again try restoring a few folders from the backup rather than the entire backup

  • How do I restore files from External Harddrive - Disk warrior cannot rebuild

    Hi Guys
I have a External Hard drive that I can see via Disk Ulitity and shows in finder - but I cannot see the actual files and directories, hence not being able to copy them to a new external hard drive
When I connect the External Harddrive to my Macbook I'm getting the message
"OS X can't repair the disk "Untitled"
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Disk Utility says I have free space so it is recognising the files.   I have Time Machine backups on this external harddrive "Untitled" that I need to critical use.
Basically how do I get the files off this external harddrive before it fully stops working? I have tried rebuilding the disk with Disk Warrior but this does not work.
Thank you anyone! I hope someone can help!

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

  • Restore files to external hard drive from Mac's Backup program?

    Can anyone help me here?:
I'm trying to restore individual files that I backed up using Mac's backup program. I've selected the files I want to restore, but it wants to restore to my internal drive and overwrite the newer corresponding files.
I want to restore to my external drive and manage my backups without this program at all. I can't access any of the files I backed up with this program and it's taking up a huge chunk of one of my external drives.
Very frustrating, any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Josh

If you have newer versions on your internal drive, then why do you want to restore older ones in the first place? If you want to backup the newer files to the external drive, then you need to configure Backup to use the internal drive as the Source and the external drive as the Destination. I think you must have it in reverse - restoring from the backup (the external drive) to the source (the internal drive.)

  • Restore files from external back up on my Pavilion dm4-1160us

    Hell o everyone,
Recently i was prompted to automatic updates and decide to run it before it counted down to its own restart.  When it attempted to boot, it got stuck on a loop between trying to boot and running start up repair page.
Eventually, it took me to the recovery manager.  After a while, I dedcided to restore the laptop to out of box condition.  I created a backup as prompted by computer on a 64GB flash drive.  I ran the restoration process after removing the flash drive.
Now I have been trying to install the files from the flash drive, but all the tutorials and help I have found all lead to the same things with no results.
Can anyone help me figure this out?
    Thank you for your time,
    Tony

    Hello @othonuo ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you cannot install the external files from the USB. If you cannot install them manually, then I would configure the BIOS to boot from the computer and install them directly. Here's how you can do that: Configuring the Boot Order in the System BIOS
That's all I got for now. Let me know how that goes!

  • Lost iPod in fire and trying to restore files from external hard drive

I've got a similar issue to folks who are trying to restore their Library from an external source, but with a new twist. We suffered a house fire, and my iPod was destroyed. Amazingly an external hard drive I had done some backups to survived (mostly) and I have several of my iTunes songs, but when I tried to import them into my new computer (and new license of iTunes) I can't get anything to work. I tried manually copying the files over to the iTunes folder and then "importing a file" into my Library but it doesn't do anything. any ideas?

Thank you for the suggestion.  I was moving them in Finder, (just as the Genius showed me but obviously he wasn't quite a genius after all!)   However, even after moving a file onto the external drive within iMovie like you suggested,  it's still not working.  Trying to open the files from the external drive, they will only open in QuickTime Player, and also only as individual clips.  Any other suggestions would be very much welcomed!
    Thank you.

  • How do i transfer files from external harddrive to new mac

Okay I'm getting a new macbook pro with retina display tomorrow, but i currently own a macbook pro. I backed up everything on an external hard drive from the macbook pro. Question is, how do I get all my stuff from the external to the new macbook pro with retina?

  • Ipod won't sync to music files on external harddrive

I have too many music files to keep on my computer, so I 've got them on an external (E) drive. Itunes has no problem with that. I have my Library file on the computer (C drive) and the music files on the E drive. When I want to use Itunes to play a song from the E drive, I just click on the library listing in Itunes on the C drive and it finds the song and plays it no problem. However, my Ipod can't seem to find the files on the E drive to sync to them or download them.

Have you connected any new USB devices recently? Has the drive letter of the external drive been changed? Have you checked the external drive for errors? Does the problem persist if you power off the computer, then restart with the iPod & your external drive as the only USB devices?

  • Importing music from my external harddrive

I have saved my iTunes library to an external harddrive as my laptop was dying.  How do I tranfer my library back to iTunes?  It workes when the external harddrive is plugged in but as soon as I diconnect the songs are not available.

UPDATE--> Manually adding folders (drag from explorer and drop on music libray) appears to be functioning as a work around. I have been testing individual folders and so far so good.
While this may be a workaround i have HUNDREDS of folders! =(

  • ITunes 10. Moved m4a files from ext harddrive to my new laptop

I had an older laptop with an external harddrive storing my music. That laptop since died and was repalced with a new one. looks like the files are m4a files on the harddrive. The iTunes 10 looks like it processes the files when I add that folder to the libary but I never see any music. The m4a files can not be played in windows media player or any other player I have downloaded. I did some research and it says the m4a files are unprotected. Many are just loads from my CDs (over 25,000 songs plus) a few was purchased from iTunes. I had several iTunes accounts for the home. One for movies, the parents and the kids. If these was created by various other accounts will that affect the ability to play? I don't see how as they all played on the older laptop. Music was also shared with a desktop and a Crestron media server. Thanks for any insite on this.

Assuming that you're using the same iTunes version on both and there is no music on your new laptop:
On your iBook just replace the folder "iTunes" and all its content in your user/Music directory with a copy of "iTunes" (all subfolder included) of your eMac.

  • HT1751 when I click and drag itunes into a external harddrive all I get is a icon in the harddrive not the files

when I click and drag itunes to an external harddrive all I get is a shortcut an icon to itunes not the files the music to itunes
I am running  windows xp home edition

I had this problem once and in my case it happenned with music I had not purchased through itunes and also to music that stored in icloud.  Once I brought that music off icloud and into my laptop it resolved most of the issue.

  • Restore External Harddrive From TimeMachine

I had to reformat my external harddrive. I wanted to restore all the files I had previously back onto it. I made sure that it was backed up before I reformatted, for months timemachine hase been making its normal backups with this external drive included in those backups. (I made sure this external harddrive was not on the "exclude" list in system preferences for time machine).
I cannot figure out how to restore those files! Please help me! How can I restore those files I'm sure are backed up?!
(sorry for so many exclamation points... I just have a lot of work invested in those files)
Thanks everyone in advance for your help:-)

  • The harddrive holding my itunes library is damaged and I would like to purchase the icloud.  Can I restore files to the icloud without the disk/libraries?

the harddrive holding my itunes library is damaged and I would like to purchase the icloud.  Can I restore files to the icloud without the disk/libraries?  Thanks!

iCloud does not provide a service like Dropbox where you can save random files to it as a way of having external storage.  As for the HD damage, don't you have a backup of the itunes library elsewhere?  If so, copy it to the replacement hard drive, along with any other important files that were on the damaged HD.

  • I am trying to restore files created using Backup in Tiger.  How do I do this on a Snow Leopard machine which is connected to the Tiger external drive?

I have an external disk that was used on Tiger iMac. I used Backup to save files. Now that I have this external drive connected to a new IMac running SnowLeopard, how do I restore files?

Backup 3.2 is still usable if you have a MM account and can download the upgrade.  Otherwise you'll need to restore them via Tiger.
If the backup is not archived, then the individual files may be accessible directly.
