Restoring font book

made the stupid mistake of adding some pc fonts to my font book and ran into a buch of duplicate issues which i resolved by deleting the duplicates.  I would like to just try and restore the font book to its previous state.  Tried through time machine, but I seem to be still missing fonts.  Is this the right way, or is there a better way?

  • Restore Font Book?

I downloaded some free fonts and messed something up on installation. Now the system is utilizing some fonts where it should not, like on web pages, and other system fonts seem to not be available to my email program.
What's the easiest way to restore my font book to normal, even if it means losing these downloaded fonts? I tried an Archive and Install but it didn't help.

    HI,
You could try reinstalling the FontBook application.
To reinstall applications that came with your Mac:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the package that installs bundled software or additional software. A package has an icon that looks like an opened box.
Follow the onscreen instructions. If you see a pane with a Customize button, click Customize and select the application you want to install. If you see a pane that lets you choose what to install, click the disclosure triangle beside Applications and select the application you want to install.

  • Installed 200 fonts into Font Book, webpages not displaying correctly now.

My wife accidentally installed a ton of fonts from my collection into Font Book. Now most webpages won't display properly. I deleted most of the fonts, but certain webpages still don't look right/display the correct font. I need to know how to restore Font Book to it's default, or basically get me back to where I was before all this happened. I've tried using Font Finagler to clean my font caches, but that didn't work. I've also tried getting rid of any fonts in Home/Library/Fonts. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

If after reinstalling your fonts your still have issues, then Font Book's database may be damaged, along with the system's font cache files. To reset each, do the following.
First, follow the steps in Undoing Font Book.
    Then follow this additional step.
Download and run Mark Douma's Font Finagler to clear the font cache files on the system.

  • If I restore standard fonts in font book, will it delete the fonts that came with my Adobe Creative Suite program?

I want to reorganize my fonts; some I've received from my school to work on projects; others I got from work and some I've downloaded myself. If I restore standard fonts in font book, will it delete the fonts that were installed with my Adobe Creative Suite 5 program?

  • I need a font book factory reset & a clean slate

My font book is is a mess!  I have duplicate fonts in about 4 different directories (my fault) and want a fresh start.  I did an "export" of my fonts but I am unsure how to do a factory reset.  I've read the Font Management in OS X doc but am unclear if clearing the cache will bring me back to just the basic system fonts or only clears the history.
Do I need to go in and delete ("file ----> remove font") the fonts in font book one by one and THEN clear the cache before reinstalling the ones I want in the ONE directory folder where I want them to live?  (lesson learned).  I have 1200 (not including the duplicates) fonts that I need to sift through and am looking for the fastest way to do this without losing the key system fonts for Mac, Office 2011 and Adobe CS5 Creative Suite.
Is that amount of installed fonts still manageable with font book or should I be looking at a different font management solultion?  I can't answer that for myself until I make it manageable with only ONE copy of each font
Thanks in advance for your help!  I promise that I've read through this site and have been googling all day but haven't been sure about resetting the it all back to square one
    Tara

There isn't an easy, singular answer to your question, though it would be fairly straightforward if it weren't for Office. I am curious how you arrived at 4 directories of fonts. There are only three Fonts folders OS X looks at. The ones in the System folder, the main Library folder, and the one in the active user account. Since you shouldn't even be looking in the System folder (if you don't know what you're doing), the only two places you should have any fonts you've added would be the main Library and your account.
Anyway, start by launching Font Book. Delete any Font sets or Library sets you have created. Close Font Book. Create a new folder on the desktop. Call it "mine". Anything you want really, just so it refers to the fonts in your user account. Go to the Fonts folder in your user account and move all fonts out of that folder to the new one on the desktop. Create another new folder on the desktop named "lib". Open the /Library/Fonts/ folder and move all fonts into the second new folder. Both the /Library/Fonts/ folder, and the Fonts folder in your user account should be empty.
Follow the instructions at the bottom of Font Management in OS X to restore all fonts from the Snow Leopard DVD. You will be using Pacifist to restore both the System and Library fonts. When you're done, your fonts will be back to the way the were when you first installed OS X.
From the desktop folder you named "lib". Move Hoefler Text.ttc and STHeiti Medium.ttc to the /Library/Fonts/ folder. Replace the versions you just restored with these newer versions. They were updated in 10.6.5.
Office 2011 installs many newer versions of fonts OS X comes with. Move these fonts from the 'lib" folder into the /Library/Fonts/ folder so you again replace the ones you just restored.

Here's where it gets a bit trickier. Office 2011 also installs a number of old fonts which conflict with the newer .ttf OpenType fonts. Delete these from the "lib" folder on your desktop. Note that they do not have a file extension.

Without being able to see what you have left in the "lib" folder, I can't easily say what you can move back into the /Library/Fonts/ folder. So I'll list everything else Office 2011 installs that you can move back in. Office uses many of these for its supplied templates. Cambria is the default font family for Word.

Anything you have left in the "lib" folder on your desktop will either be duplicates, or fonts installed by other third party apps. That will essentially be true of any fonts you moved out of your user account. I can't tell you which, if any of these, would need to be moved back in. For now, combine the two into a single folder and store them away anywhere not in any of the three Fonts on the hard drive. There will be a bunch of them as CS5 installs a slew of fonts. None of which it needs to operate.
That's as far as I can help with the fonts themselves.
Now open Disk Utility and run a Repair Permissions on your startup drive. Moving the fonts around will cause them to have permissions OS X doesn't like. Mainly just because you moved them back into the /Library/Fonts/ folder and it will want to change the permissions to OS X as the owner simply because of where they are.
    Last few things to do.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
Next to take care of the System's font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
Last step when back at the desktop. Launch Font Book so it can create a new database based on the fonts currently in the drive's three Fonts folders.
There should be no duplicates. Everything OS X and Office installs will be available.

  • Font Book disables fonts every time I restart my computer

First, some info on my computer:
    - OS X 10.9.3
    - Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 version 7.5
    - Office 2011 14.4.3
    - Suitcase Fusion 5 16.2.0
As a graphic designer, I've accumulated thousands of fonts. In an attempt to clean this up, I recently purchased Suitcase Fusion 5. I transferred the fonts by going into Font Book and selecting "Restore Standard Fonts." I then took the Macintosh HD; Library; "Fonts (Removed)" folder and added those to Suitcase Fusion 5.
Then I went back, and added about five of the removed fonts back into Macintosh HD; Library; Fonts — just because they are fonts I use frequently — as well as the Microsoft folder of fonts.
Now, for some reason, every time I start my computer (I shut down every night before leaving my office) about half of the Microsoft fonts are disabled by font book. The next day I enable them and everything works well and they all show up in both my Adobe and Office programs, but I'd really rather not play that game every morning. Again, almost all of the fonts being disabled are in the Macintosh HD; Library; Fonts; Microsoft folder, but only until the Ms or so, after which point they all show up as enabled and work just fine. And then there are a couple of outliers I've marked with an asterisk, that are just in the typical Macintosh HD; Library; Fonts folder that are also being disabled, the most confusing one being ThirstyRoughTextures.ttf, because the rest of the Thirsty Rough family is working just fine. (This single Thirsty Rough file is the only of the five-or-so fonts that I added back into my library after restoring it to standard fonts that is acting up. The others show up in all programs just fine.)
Anyhow, does anyone know why this might be happening, or how to resolve the issue? Any input would be great, thanks!

I'm fed up with Font Book and ready to remove it.
Just to keep it easily handy, put the Font Book app on an external drive. All other supporting system files for it will still be on the drive, so using it again rather than a third party font manager is as simple as copying FB back into the Applications folder.
It is essential after deleting Font Book to follow the steps in my article to remove the abandoned Font Book database. Even with the main Font Book app removed from the drive, if the database exists, OS X will keep trying to read and use it, and it will interfere with all other font managers.
which seemingly only activates fonts once I open up that extension
Those are extension panels Suitcase adds to apps they've written them for so you don't have to go to the main interface in order to turn fonts on or off. It's a convenience thing to speed up access to your font sets.
what will happen to programs like Microsoft Office that aren't compatible with Fusion?
If you use a panel in the Adobe apps to turn any fonts on or off, all apps system wide will see the changes in available fonts since that's how it works with any manager. Or, you can launch the main Suitcase interface to do the same thing.
MS Office has an annoying quirk I haven't seen with any other app. It will not pay attention to any fonts you've activated or deactivated after Word has been launched. That's not a Suitcase issue, it's any font manager. Office simply does not keep tabs on available fonts while in use. To see fonts you've activated after Word is already running, you have to quit Word and relaunch it. Same with turning fonts off. Doesn't matter that they're not available any more. If they were when you launched Word, they'll continue to show in the list. Attempting to use one of course doesn't work. It types in Arial, or something, but not what you chose since it can't.
Is FontBook irrelevant and Office/any other program still just utilizes the actual HD/Library/Fonts folder without it?
When font management is working as it supposed to, all apps (save Office) will change the list of fonts you can use as you turn them on or off. It used to be, way back in Tiger, 10.4 (before 10.4.3) and earlier that any fonts in the System or main Library folder were available all the time with no way to control them, other than physically deleting fonts from those folders. This is still true of the System's Fonts folder.

  • How to restore fonts back to original fonts?

My macbook pro bar menu fonts become AAAAA... how to solve this problem ?

You'll find the instructions for installing just the fonts from the original OS X disk at the bottom of this document:
    http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html
Before you do that. Follow these steps.
    1) Delete all fonts from the /Library/Fonts/ folder, and the Fonts folder in your user account. Leave the System's Fonts folder alone.
    2) Restart the Mac in Safe Mode (restart and hold down the Shift key). Then restart normally. This will clear the cache files in your user account, and Font Book's database. The latter is important since some of the fonts you had installed were likely corrupt. If they're corrupt, Font Book's database also gets hosed. Once that happens, the only fix is to clear it.
    3) Now use Pacifist to restore the fonts from the OS X installation disk.

  • How to restore font library to original?

I had a folder with tons of fonts in it. I would add them one by one when needed rather than using a font management program. Today I went ahead and added all of them into Font Book. They have brought my system to a crawl. I tried to disable all fonts in Font Book to see if that would work, but with no results. I even tried putting my personal font folder (which is what I also loaded into Font Book) in the trash, but the fonts still keep showing up in the apps...even though they're in the trash. I'd like to just go ahead and restore my user Library back to its original state when I installed Leopard...without having to do a complete reinstall. I'm assuming that will fix everything. Is this possible? I really miss my blazing fast app speed

  • Font book deleted most fonts when resolving duplicates

After having problems with Word not quitting I decided to use Font Book to "validate" my fonts. It came up with several serious problems and I deleted those fonts. The remaining minor problems were dupllicate fonts. I selected them and chose to Resolve Duplicates. Suddenly nearly all of my fonts disappeared.
I had to use Time Machine to restore the fonts. I tried again and this time Font Book worked as intended. Strange.
My tip is before doing font maintenance make a backup of your font files:
    /Library/Fonts     or  <home>/Library/Fonts

  • Font Book installation problem

I just got the new iMac 27", and are having problem with Font Book.
Everytime I install a font package I get error messages... these fonts are purchased from FontShop or others, and never had problem with previous systems in the past. Anybody has an idea what is change in Font Book and how to get arount it?
One example: Install Gotham HTF (from Font Shop)
    Font Validation window poped up
Message: 20 serious errors were found. Do not use these fonts.
If I 'force' it by Select all fonts, and Install Checked.
It install the fonts to "User" not into the fold I created. With Adobe Illustrator, only one style is usable (out of 3 that was in the package)
These fonts are licienced, and were used in all systems I had before... still work on iMac 24" white. Same problem is on Macbook Pro which is also runing 10.8.3.
    Thank you.

You might try restoring the fonts from the original, if you can.
It'd be hard to say without looking at the font whether I'd ignore it or not. A bad FOND Bounding Box could cause problems like this:
Notice the abnormally large amount of space between lines.
A font's 'FOND' resource contains information about the fonts in a particular font family, and includes several "tables" that provide information about the font: style-mapping table, kerning table, family glyph-width table, offset table, and bounding-box table.
"The bounding-box table, shown in Figure 4-26, contains the bounding-box measurements for a 1-point font. The bounding boxes used in this table are similar to the font rectangle, since each describes the smallest rectangle that encloses the shape of each glyph in a given font. There are separate bounding-box entries in the table for different styles."(see The Bounding Box Table)
As long as the font seems to display okay, it should probably be okay to use.
    Hope this helps....

  • Font Book Problem - Cannot see validated fonts in QuarkXpress

We are trying to view the fonts that we have loaded into the font book from QuarkXpress. We can see the fonts in Adobe Design Premium apps (Photoshop, Illistrator, etc.) but not in Quark 7.3.1. The fonts validate fine in the book. We have tried removing Quark and reinstalling it. We have tried booting into safe mode to clear out the font cache. We have done a permissions repair, verified permissions manually for user accounts on the new font folder that is created, and removed and readded the fonts under the user and the computer sections of the font book. The fonts are ITC Kabel fonts. They work fine on another Mac that we are running Leopard on as well, but they are not visible through QuarkXpress from a different user account on this same Mac with the problem. The only thing that I can think of is a system reload using the restore settings option to keep her settings? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Since we have reloaded Quark, I may try doing an install and archive on the OS. Maybe this will correct the problem?
Maybe, it depends on what's wrong with Quark. It could be that the OS is indeed damaged and preventing Quark from operating properly. But it still could be another instance of Kabel being active. You searched for Kabel by name, but that's not how fonts actually work.
Say you have a Word document on the desktop named "Budget report April 2008", but when you open it, the text is a grocery list. Fonts fall in that category. The name of a font you see on the desktop has nothing to do with the name that may show up in your programs. All fonts have an internal name. That's the one that gets reported to the system and is displayed in your applications.
A suitcase of TrueType fonts can have up to 999 fonts stuffed in it. There's no telling what you'll get in your font lists until you activate the suitcase. So it's entirely possible you have Kabel as a font that's named something else on the desktop, or you have a suitcase of fonts active that has a font declaring itself as Kabel in it.
Before going through an Archive and Install, create a new folder on the desktop. Move every font in the /Library/Fonts/ folder and the Fonts folder of your user account into the new folder. Use Font Finagler to clear the system's font cache files. Let the Mac restart.
Now move just the font named Kabel back to the folder it was originally in. If it now shows up in Quark, you had a font conflict with something else you moved out of the Fonts fodlers.

  • Font Book 2.1 can't be launched on Lion

I tried to launch Font Book, and I get an error message that says "You can't use this version of the application Font Book with this version of Mac OS X", You have version 2.1.
My machine came with Lion pre installed, and I then migrated the content of my older Leopard machine. Since then I have stayd up to date with Lion. Have not used FontBook for a while, but now I wanted to install some new fonts.
I have not found a way to update the Font Book application.
I can see this in the log:
    2012-31-10 9:52:47.395 PM com.apple.coreservices.uiagent: Oct 31 21:52:47 Henriks-MacBook-Pro.local CoreServicesUIAgent[31163] <Notice>: Application failed to launch (id = com.apple.FontBook, version = 2.1 reason = kLSIncompatibleApplicationVersionErr)
How can I upgrade, or repair ?
    Help !

You may have accidentally brought over Leopard versions of programs during the migration, overwriting the Lion versions. Unless you have another way of restoring the correct versions, you best bet would be to boot to the recovery partition and reinstall Lion.

Sounds like you imported one Library to another? Did you drop the Library icon onto the iPhoto icon for instance?
Restore from your back up is the simple and fast solution.

  • Problems with Font Book

I run my own literary magazine, and recently I purchased and installed a 4000 font package onto my computer. Needless to say, it wasn't the most intelligent thing to do, because every program that runs with fonts, like Photoshop, InDesign, and even Word, take five to six minutes to start up. I want to restore to my original fonts that came with my PowerBook without resetting my hard drive, and I honestly have no idea how to do it. If someone could enlighten me on this topic I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Upon inspecting Font Book, it seems like you could highlight any fonts or font families and use "file/remove" or "edit/disable"
