Restoring from Backup-"backup session failed"

Hello, everyone.
I recently upgraded to iOS 4.1, and now I can't restore my iPod from a backup.
When I attempt to, I get the error message:
"iTunes cannot restore "The Awesome iPod of Pure Awesomeness" because the backup session failed."
Yes, that's what I named my iPod.
After searching a bit, I couldn't find any threads in this forum or results from Google about how to resolve this. Could anyone here help me?
EDIT: To clarify, restoring from backup worked in all previous iOS versions.

As for the battery problem, if your ipod touch/iphone has multitasking capabilities, try holding down the home button for four seconds, finding the Game Center icon in the list of currently running background apps, then stopping the "Game Center" process in the background by tapping the minus sign at the top left of the icon. But I'm also annoyed at this firmware update.

  • Cannot restore because 'backup session failed'

I'm working with an original iphone, and am trying to get it to restore to a backup via iTunes (10.1).
If I look at the Backup folder (<MobileSync < Application Support < user Library), I see that not all of the backups show in the restore pulldown list in iTunes.
My original reason for trying a restore had to do with the phone freezing and not turning off (neither by time-out nor by button control). So it was some funkiness with the phone behavior, which led me to try a restore. I have no reason to think the phone hardware has somehow gone bad, since I've reasonably good care of the phone for 4+ years. Maybe I'm wrong to think it's more of a software issue; any thoughts about hardware going bad?

As it relates to hardware, the phone I'm referring to in my previous post had a broken on-off button, which prevented it from going into DFU mode.
Borrowed another original iPhone, switched my SIM, brought it down to 3.1.2 from 3.1.3, and I have a working phone.
Problem now is that I can't access the backups made by my original iPhone that were made with 3.1.3. I've posted in the software area with this thread:

Well, first off, you are not addressing Apple here. This is a user to user PUBLIC forum. You should not post your personal information like that. Try closing iTunes, reboot the computer and connect again. Are you using the latest version of iTunes, v11.1?

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed.  After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work.  I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder.  Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore.  Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.

  • Can't restore my iPhone 3GS (w/iOS5); backup session failed.

I'm practically at wits end, here.
For two days I've been trying to restore my iPhone 3GS and so far, nothing.
The problem happened after I downloaded and updated my iPhone with iOS5.  When I tried to restore it from one of three back-ups that I had, I ran into
that error (-50).  Managed to get passed that and tried again.  When I did, I get the message saying "iTunes could not restore the iPhone ****** because the backup session failed."
It doesn't just do this for my most recent back up; it does this for ALL of my back-ups.  Is there any kind of fix out sure-fix for this (barring getting a new phone)?!  I think I've tried several strats that I've seen in other threads and nothing has worked.
(btw, the comp that I'm using primarily is Windows Vista)

*update* GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!  Turns out that I was able to restore my phone from a back up, after two days at it!
Unfortunately, the back up was from a year ago!  At this point in time, I'm just glad to have my contacts back, though I feel that now would be be best to make sure I keep backing up my phone to make sure this doesn't happen again o.O

  • IPhone - wipe & restore "backup session failed"

I have an old first generation iPhone (os version 3.1.3) that I replaced last year with an iPhone 4.  I want to wipe it clean and let my daughter use it just as an iPod.  I've done a factory restore a few times on this, but can't get it to a usable state.  After restoring, it is stuck on the "plug the usb cable into iTunes icon" screen.  Every time I try to sync or backup I get the "iTunes could not back up the iPhone ... because the backup session failed" error, and I can never get the phone to the home screen.
Note I don't care about any old data or phone access, i just want it wiped clean and installed with the games my daughter likes.  I've tried my wifes MBP, and my Mac Pro desktop; I've tried deleting old backups manually from ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup and the lockdown file from /var/db/lockdown, and creating a brand new administrator account on my Mac and trying to get it to work from there.  No luck.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Note the iPhone mounts in iTunes just fine, but any attempt to backup/sync it fails, and the iPhone never dispalys the home screen

  • Itunes could not restore the iphone because the backup session failed

    Hello,
i did a backup for my data on itunes, then i upgraded to IOS 6.1, when i tried to restore my backup it keeps giving me this message:
"itunes could not restore the iphone because the backup session failed".
although i still have the data in the backup folder, i searched the internet for softwares that can recover my data, i found a software called "Wondershare Dr.Fone"
i was able to recover all my data via Wondershare Dr.Fone, but it didnt restore the data to my iPhone, it only recovered it to my pc, as (media files, contacts,etc...)
i was wondering if there is any way to fix this problem, or any other way to restore my backup to my iPhone device without using Itunes...
one more thing , can i upload the backup files that i have on my pc to iCloud, then recover it from my iPhone??
please help i really need all my data to be back on my iPhone, media, messages, contacts, notes, even whatsapp messages.
    Thank you

  • IOS 5: iTunes could not restore the iPhone "John's iPhone" because the backup session failed."

I've been battling to get my iPhone onto iOS 5 for 2 days, during which time my phone has been rendered unuseable, and is stuck on the set up menu. When I select "Restore from iTunes Backup," it tells me to connect to iTunes, so I do. I've tried to back it up 20 million times, and I think sometimes it failed, but other times the backup worked. But then, when I go to restore, I get the error message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "John's iPhone" because the backup session failed.
So what do I do. My phone is unuseable and it doesn't seem like theres any solution.
Also, are you able to tell whether or not I've lost all of my data that is not my music/apps. Please tell me if you think I have.

Good luck. My iPod Touch did the same thing. I now have a very expensive paperweight that I'd like to stuff up someone's nose over at Apple. The "resolutions" offered by Apple don't do anything for me (they never do). There are a variety of resolutions that others have discovered but none of them have worked for me either. This is my second Touch and the second major malfunction that is probably unfixable. If I can't get this fixed and get my data restored I'll probably give this thing to my toddler to play Angry Birds and I'll go buy a device from a company that knows what their doing.
Do a search on Google (or whatever) with the error message and you should find some suggestions from others who've had this problem, some seem to have found solutions. If I find a fix that actually works I'll make a follow-up post.

  • Apps fail to install during iPad restore from backup

I made a clean backup of my iPad2/iOS6, rebooted everything, then tried to restore from backup and there's a bunch of apps that failed to install. I've repeated this process 3x; every time it seems to be a different # of failed to install apps (3-80!!). I now have almost a full page of icons/folders with blank install bars under them.
Did anyone find a solution to this?!

Haven't tried setting up as new. I did the restore and then when itunes asked me, I selected the restore from a backup that was created yesterday. I'll try setup as new first and then restore from backup after? It's going to be a real pain if I have to start everything from scratch :(

    Hi there HotFerrari,
It sounds like you are unable to restore your device from a backup you have in iTunes. I recommend the troubleshooting from the article named:

  • Hello. I have updated my iphone 4 to ios7 after doing a backup to itunes. I am caught in a loop of being asked to 'restore from backup' as part of setup and that restore failing because the phone already has it's content I believe. Please help if you can.

Hi. I have an iphone 4 that I have just installed ios7 onto. I had backed up the phone prior.
After the software install the phone rebooted and showed the 'Hello' setup. I am stuck because as part of the setup it asks me to 'restore from backup via itunes". I dont understand why i need to do this as I thought the ios7 install procedure would restore the phone with it's content.
I tried to restore from backup but it says I cant because there is not enough space on the phone. If I connect the phone to itunes, it shows that the phone has all my content, especially since iphoto launches and I can see all the photos it wants to download to iphoto off the phone.
I am caught in a loop. My phone has it's content, but the startup procedure on the phone will not let me progress until I have restored from backup via itunes. But it cant because the phone has no space!!
The only other option it gives is 'Set up as new phone".
    Can anyone help please. Thanks.

You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup.  If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup.  You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone.  However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.

  • IPad restored from backup but iTunes says restore failed

SO, it seems like iOS 5 has been a major pain for a lot of people...
I haven't seen anything about the specific issue I'm encountering though.  I spent almost all day yesterday trying to get my iPad backup restored after the update.  Finally, last night, the iPad had all my apps, with all my data (except some pictures I had synched from my iMac).  But, when I reconnect to iTunes it treats the iPad as if it's "blank", wanting to either set up as a new iPad or restore from my back-up, and the restore process errors out near the end, resulting in the iPad having all the data, but iTunes seeing it as "blank" again.
Any ideas on how I can get my iTunes and iPad to agree on the status of my iPad?

Correction... now the restore from backup goes all the way through, BUT when the iPad reboots, iTunes still thinks it's "blank"... PLEASE help.

  • Unable to restore from backup

    Hello everyone,
I have a small problem that I can't seem to find a solution to. I have 3gs that I sync with my Dell laptop running Win7 and I'm using ITunes 9. When I go to sync, everything syncs fine, backups are creating and it seems that there are no problems. No errors are given once the sync/backup are complete. The other day, I needed to restore from backup. Here's where the problem comes in. After a minute or so of ITunes telling me it's restoring, I get a window that pops up saying something along the lines of "unable to complete restore because the backup session failed." I had about 6 backups available and they all came back with the same error trying to restore. After reading about this problem here in the forums, some have suggested turning off anti-virus software, making sure certain programs have been given access in a firewall. I've tried to sync with AV turned off, Firewall correctly set and even turned off and then continue with restoring, but i continue to receive the same error trying to restore. Any ideas on what might be happening?? I've saved my directories with backups and reisntalled ITunes, still no progress.. Thanks in advance for any ideas..

  • New iPad2 - backup session failed

I cannot update the software on my new iPad and every time I connect to iTunes it says "Backup Session Failed." This is the first Apple product I am having a incredibly bad experience with. What's the deal with this thing?

    Hi,
SF... you're close to an Apple store? I've lost track of how many there are in the city
You have 14 days from date of purchase for an exchange or refund.
Try restarting the iPad. Press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button until you see the red slider then swipe the slider to the right. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until you see the Apple logo.
    Restart your Mac.
Follow the instructions here for restoring and backing up your iPad.

  • HT4946 cannot find itunes backup on my PC (win xp). want to move over to external hard drive to restore from backup bc PC not enough space

i just restored my ipad2 to iOS 6.1.3 yesterday. i have been trying to restore from backup, but i keep getting error messages from itunes (running latest version of itunes) that says there is not enough space to save the backup on the computer. i have tried clearing up as much space on my PC (windows xp), but there is still not enough room. and ive tried disk cleanup on my computer and resetting the ipad and running it through recovery mode (as some articles sugggested it would help with restoring after failed attempts). i read on another question in the apple support discussions that someone just moved his whole backup folder into his external harddrive and then he was able to restore from backup.
the backup is definitely saved on my computer (itunes confirms that), and the backup folder is supposed to be here  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\, but im still not finding it with that file path. i get as far as "username" and then i dont see "application data" and so on. but when i try searching that file path in google chrome, i find it and i see it, but its strange that i cant find it in the "docs and settings" folder in my C drive.
please help! i just want to be able to move the backup folder to my external to restore from backup. thank you in advance!!

Thank you! I was able to find it. Im sorry, i have a few follow up questions. Does the iTunes have to be running from my external as well to do the restore from backup? And if so, how do I move iTunes to external and run it from there? Also, I just copied over the "backup" folder (last part of that file path to my external, is that enough, or did I have to copy it starting from the beginning (docs and settings and so forth)? Lastly, when I select restore from backup in iTunes, would it automatically know that it's the copy on my external to restore backup from? Or do I have to delete or do something with the original file path in my computer?
    Thank you!
