Restoring from backup of a disk that started to fail

My main boot drive of my Mac Pro started to fail. The first indication was when I opened an application, the icon was not in the dock, just an empty space. It seemed to be happening more often so I went into target disk mode and attached it to another mac pro. I ran the disk verify and it found errors. Then I tried to repair. The Disk Utility told me to get a new hard drive.
So I got a new hard drive and I'm restoring from my Time Machine backup. It's got another 3 hours to go.
My question is, if the drive was faulty, will my Time Machine put faulty files on this new hard drive. Is there anything that I need to be concerned about. I'd rather do this than try to re-install everything of course. This machine is a workhorse and I have a lot of data and programs on it.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, the drawbacks of TM connected all the time is it will eventually get completely corrupted by a slow ongoing issue as the old gets removed in favor of the new. TM is just a rotating image backup.
If this TM restore is problematic, copy your files off to a data drive, label it and disconnect, then wipe and restore from a earlier TM version and try again, repeat the cycle backwards until your stable, then return the latest copy of your files from the data drive.
If you don't have any stability even from the earliest TM state, then your looking at a complete rebuild, "fresh install" method, do not involve TM in this method.
Make a game plan, make a option bootable clone of the hosed system for backup, label it as fscked up, copy all product serials, setting etc., and just be methodical.
Follow this performance "fresh install" method for hard drives.
1: backup user file folders to data drive. install OS and updated
2: install all programs, working and set up.
3: user files dead last. simply drop the contents right back into their respective users folders (aka Music, Docs, Picture, Movies etc, NOT Library!)
4: use the same user name and hard drive name as the original so files can find other files (pathnames) on your new configuration. iTunes especially.
Once you have a pristine new system, then clone that puppy a few times to seperate hard drives and label and date them, keep one clone updated weekly, another back a month. TM for more current uses as it's always connected.
Some people do this multi-approach as it takes a long time to rebuild with tons of programs and serial #'s to enter and setup, not only that, hard drives die suddenly and TM drives are not bootable, but clones are.

after restore from backup, iphone is not getting start, only apple logo is there on screen

    Hi there.
Try some basic trouble shooting steps first, before looking into some advanced issues that might be causing this. The first thing I would try, is holding down the power button and home button at the same time until the screen turns off on you. See what steps you can take from there, if any.
    Kind Regards.

  • Used iTunes to restore from backup and the Apple ID that shows up is a very old one

I have an iPhone 4s. I recently lost all of my contacts for some mysterious reason. I personally think it's a conspiracy by Apple to force me to upgrade to a new phone. Anyway, I hooked my phone up to my computer (Windows 7) and from iTunes I went to Devices, Restore from Backup. I know that within the last few weeks that I backed it up onto  iTunes but I cannot figure out from the newest iTunes how to find it. So I restored the backup but it backed up from November of 2012 (I am only assuming this because the most recent pictures that are in phone are from that date). It did restore my contacts from 2012 but there are no recent contacts in there plus I lost all my photos from November 2012 on. Which is no big deal. My problem is that the Apple ID that is showing up is from a very old account. The e-mail address is no longer even valid.I tried to delete iCloud from my phone so that I could put it back on with my new Apple ID but I cannot remember the password of my old id. When I go to reset my password for my old id and the security questions come up the first thing it asks for is my date of birth. When I put my date of birth in it says:
The authentication information provided does not match our records. Please verify your personal information and try again.
I know that I did not enter the wrong birth date when I first set up that account. So now I am stuck because I cannot get any further without that date of birth. I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP. PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
PS-Not sure if this matters but I also upgraded to iOS 8 directly before I did the Restore From Backup.

  • HT201250 When using the installation disc to start a Mac Pro that won't start; will the 'restore from backup' option erase all the data previously stored?

As long as the backup on your external drive is fine, it will restore your Mac to exactly how it was on the date of that particular backup, all data included. I have used it before and have retained all data from the date of the backup.

  • Hello. I have updated my iphone 4 to ios7 after doing a backup to itunes. I am caught in a loop of being asked to 'restore from backup' as part of setup and that restore failing because the phone already has it's content I believe. Please help if you can.

Hi. I have an iphone 4 that I have just installed ios7 onto. I had backed up the phone prior.
After the software install the phone rebooted and showed the 'Hello' setup. I am stuck because as part of the setup it asks me to 'restore from backup via itunes". I dont understand why i need to do this as I thought the ios7 install procedure would restore the phone with it's content.
I tried to restore from backup but it says I cant because there is not enough space on the phone. If I connect the phone to itunes, it shows that the phone has all my content, especially since iphoto launches and I can see all the photos it wants to download to iphoto off the phone.
I am caught in a loop. My phone has it's content, but the startup procedure on the phone will not let me progress until I have restored from backup via itunes. But it cant because the phone has no space!!
The only other option it gives is 'Set up as new phone".
    Can anyone help please. Thanks.

You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup.  If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup.  You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone.  However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

  • HT201210 I tried to update to IPad 5.1, but when it finished and tried to restore the backup, it shows me that Itunes could not back up because a session could not be started with iPad. need your help please

I tried to update to IPad 5.1, but when it finished and tried to restore the backup, it shows me that Itunes could not back up because a session could not be started with iPad. need your help please

This has happened to me a couple of times and what I do is quit iTunes and restart my Mac and then try again and then it will work.
If iTunes has already created the backup, you should still be able to restore from the backup when you are connected to iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side of iTunes and select restore from backup. After the process completes, sync with iTunes to transfer all of your apps, music, photos and other media back onto the iPad.

Synching iPhone after factory restore and restore from backup; synching appears stuck on Step 5 of 5, "waiting for items to copy."  That message displays for hours with no apparent progress.

I never had this problem, but just noticed it happening.. Please note it's a BUG. I went out and bought a 128GB  iPhone just to hold all my songs. It wouldn't work. This never happened with the iPhone 3/3s/4/5/5s but started happening with the iPhone 6. After 40 hours of working through all possible solutions on the web and with Apple cares support (supposedly senior level) They finally suggested what the problem was. I had "Convert higher bit songs to 128  aac" Checked. This does not work One more thing when I unchecked that, the sync took like 3.5 hours instead of the 9-12 hours is usually took even on the smaller iphones. I have 98.7GB of music. Before I was just syncing a list of specific songs.
The syncing seems to be random when it has the problem though.

  • My iPhone's "Other" capacity has suddenly jumped to 56G out of 64G. Yes, you read that right. Every time I try to sync to recalculate, it gets worse! Please help! Can't even restore from backup now, since my backup is all "other"!

I have fully up-to-date everything on my iPhone and computer and iTunes. I have an iPhone5 and MacBook Pro. I synced my iPhone this morning and it has 12 or so gigs of free space (even with my music and some photos on it). Then I deleted some voice memos in iTunes, and wanted to sync again to reclaim the space. When I tried, it said I had 29G of "other" data and that my phone was way over capacity and can't sync. I tried a few online solutions to force it to recalculate, but now it says it is about 90% "other"!! Only 8G of 64G free, and "other" is the ONLY thing in the summary bar.
I un-checked music for syncing, thinking that must be the problem. It did not help.  Now there is nothing on my phone except "other", according to iTunes (not even photos).
I cannot restore from backup now, since the backup includes the giant "other". I don't want to delete my info on my phone knowing a corrupted backup is my only alternative.
    Help!

Thanks so much Meg. Unfortunately, iTunes is the program I use to perform syncing. I don't really have other outside options. It is also the location of the backup I would use to restore my phone, and my only way to reclaim important data. I am concerned that, since the last backup occurred when the "other" bar was only moderately huge (around 29G I think), that a backup would replicate the problem back onto my phone.
My contacts, etc. are all in address book and the calendar app on my Mac.  As far as I know, iTunes is the way to get them back, but iTunes is where the problem is.
    Any thoughts on this?

  • Is it possible to retrieve a backup that is not available on the drop-down bar in iTunes "restore from backup"?

I was attempting to sync my phone so that I could get all of my pictures on the computer to free up some space on my phone. I have done this several times before with no problems. An error message popped up informing me that I needed to update my phone before I could sync my info. During the update, an error occured again so I tried to eject the device so that I could worry about it another day. After ejecting the phone, it kept showing on the display that it was still connected to itunes. I couldnt turn the phone off or anything, it was just frozen there. So, I hooked it back up to the computer and it prompted me to do an update on itunes to fix the problem. After updating itunes it said that i should restore the phone to it's original settings and then restore from backup. It performed a backup when I initially plugged the phone in the first time. After deleting everything off of my phone, I then attempted to restore from backup but got an error message saying that there was not enough free space on my device for me to restore my info...but I had just taken it off the phone. I stepped away from the computer for a moment and when I got back, it had performed another backup of my basically blank device. Now the only backups that I can pull up on itunes are from after everything was deleted from my phone. All of my information is gone. I know this doesn't really make any sense, but I have no idea how else to word it or how to fix it. PLEASE help! I have several pictures of my newborn son and pictures and videos of my husband's recovery process from a severe brain injury.

  • Trying to restore ipod from one that died. But restore from backup is greyed out in the itunes menu.

I have latest version of itunes on Mavericks, a brand new ipod nano, and I am trying to restore my old dead ipod from its last backup onto the new ipod. The previous (dead) ipod was inherited from my daughter and is called "Kim's ipod" and I didn't get the option to initialise with the same name when I first connected it to itunes. I suspect that might be the problem.
Restoring from backup is greyed out in the file menu.
This strikes me as a situation that shouldn't be too uncommon - I'm wondering what I am missing.
    - How to restore a new ipod from the backup of a new one
    - Why is the restore from backup option greyed out
    - Or, how to reinitialise the ipod so that the new one can have the same name as the old one in order to back it up.
Or anything else that I might have missed. FYIY the new ipod is NOT in recovery mode.

Hmm.  I came to realise iTune Match had downgraded 38 of my tracks, which I'd ripped from my own CDs long ago, with 256kbps versions.  I do have backup for the tracks, so I'd like to delete these 38 tracks (I've made a Smart playlist of them), deleting them from iCloud too; then with Match turned off, recover my originals (Add to Library) from an old Mac.
Can't do it!  As Richard Tench said at the top, from 27 July 2011, Edit > Delete is permanently grayed out if you have opted for iT Match.  And for me on iTunes 10.6.3 (Lion 10.7.4), that's not all:  Edit > Cut and Cmd-x both just produce the Bonk sound.  My Macbook keyboard has no Del key either.
But all the above are only true with Match active.  Store > Turn Off iTunes Match will ungrey Edit > Delete (& fn-bksp etc I imagine).  So I would then be able to delete the tracks locally.  But of course, if you turn off iT Match you can delete all you like locally, but they will still exist in iCloud, and if I turn on iT Match again, the lower-grade 256kbps ones will come down from the clouds to replace my CD-ripped ones again!  Won't they?
Is that right?  Is there any way to exclude these 38 tracks (out of ~6500) from iTunes Match so I can keep my better quality CD-ripped ones?  (Other than using Alt-Launch & creating a separate iTunes fileset for the 38 tracks - as you might have guessed, some of them fall right in the middle of albums.)   Help!

  • Restoring iTunes media from backup on network disk.

I backed up my iTunes media from my Powerbook G4 to a hard disk on a PC over my home network. Recently, my Powerbook was stolen and I've now replaced it with a MacBook Pro. How do I restore my iTunes media to the MacBook? iTunes wants me to insert a disc prior to restoring from backup.
    Thanks!

I figured this one out myself! I copied the backup to my MacBook, then found the right folder in the backup to drag into my new iTunes folder. It just took a couple of minutes and I was up and running.
