Restoring from TM after failed 10.5.7 update
The 10.5.7 update completely FUBARed my laptop; it is now in a boot loop worthy of a lousy Vista machine. I have full Time Machine back-ups. I need to restore back to 10.5.6 using TM. My problem is that all the instructions tell me to start from the OS disc, choose "Utilities" from the welcome screen after the language choice, and then see the choice "restore from backup" from that menu. I do not have "restore from backup" as a choice. I have "startup disk, reset password, disk utility, terminal, system profiler, and network utility". I can see the external TM drive from "disk utility", but need alternate instructions as to how to correctly start this process given my menu choices.

You are looking for the option before it's presented
Do a clean install first, after the installation the setup starts and thén the options to retrieve users settings etc will be presented (provided that indeed you install 10.5.x).
No. There's no reason to install OSX. All you need the Leopard disk for is to use the installer that's on it.
See the *Restore System From Backup...* section in the +Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine+ post at the top of this forum;

Time Machine will not let me restore from backups after June, 2013. I can see the files on the external hard drive but Time Machine skips all of them and goes back to June, 2013. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

telling me to buy a new router is NOT a solution.
And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle? -
My camera roll will not restore from iCloud after updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 6. It shows I have 1.7 gigs of photos stored on camera roll but none are appearing on my phone. Everything else restored from iCloud. When I go to iCloud.com my photostream is not there.
A response I put together from another post. Also going into iTunes and choosing to sync phone to iCloud then back "this computer" sometimes works.
First thing.. Stop where you are. Don't try to sync, update, hard reset, iCloud... Just stop.
Check on your phone under 'SETTINGS' 'GENERAL' USAGE'. It should show some value for PHOTOSTREAM. Also, connect to iTunes and you will notice at the bottom of your phones summary page that there is a large amount of 'OTHER' data.
I used third party software called iExplorer (formerly iPhone explorer). In this program you select 'MEDIA FOLDER', then 'DCIM'. In the various apple folders (IE: 101APPLE) you should be able to preview your photos and copy them to your desktop.
From there sync them back to your device through iTunes or whatever method you use.
There is a simpler solution I'm sure, which may involve using iExplorer to delete some .plist files then restart the phone and let it rebuild. I'm going to try it myself AFTER I've finished copying all the photos to my MAC
Hope this helps. -
Restore from Time Capsule fails
I'm trying to restore from my Time Capsule backup over ethernet. I've tried with two different cat5e cables, but each time it goes extremely slowly, (it only gets to .4% after an hour and says it'll take 600 hours). After about an hour it fails and this is the crash log:

Which is almost two hours ago, and the messages were coming every second or two before that. I'm not sure what the problem is this time.
That is a bit odd. The file it's referring to (/private/var/db/shadow/hash/xxx) is in a hidden system folder at the top level of your internal HD.
In my installation, /private/var/db/shadow/ is an empty folder, so I have no idea what it is.
Although when I open SystemMigration.log, these lines are updating:
2010-07-05 22:52:36 -0400 (Nop) throughput = 0.628692 MB/s. (+ 2041 files)
so I take that to mean it's copying files.
Looks like it, and the timestamp is after the previous one.
Is that a normal throughput, though?
Hard to tell. I haven't done a large migration in quite a while (not since Leopard, I think), and I wasn't watching the log.
How much data was on your system? Deduct perhaps 10 GB for OSX, and a few more for Applications. See how long that would take at about 20 GB/hr.
I'd let it alone for quite a while (longer than 20 GB/hr). But if you decide it's hung, cancel it and see how far it got.
You should be able to figure out where it was when it hung, and start over with the next top-level folder, then work on the missing items later.
But before you start again, repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Hang in there. You are making progress, whether it feels like it or not.
It's getting late here, and I'll be going to bed in a while, so if you post after that, I won't answer until tomorrow.
But do keep us posted. -
Can't restore from TM after Apple Genius erased disc and reinstalled SL
I'm traveling out of my country (and without installation discs). Because of corrupt HD (working, but slow...Disc Utility said drive was corrupt), had an Apple Genius do an erase and complete reinstallation of SL. Now attempting to restore to my previous status, but
1) when I use Time Machine with the backup disk, it has has grayed-out "Restore" for all past records. TM won't do any restore for me.
2) when I use Disc Utility to Restore, I can drag backup disc to Source box but my hard drive won't stick in the Destination box, whether I choose Erase Destination or not.
How do I get my last backup to my MacBook Pro?You don't use Disk Utility to restore from TM. You use (preferably) setup assistant when you first startcreating your account.
Failing that, Migration Assistant after an account has been made, but that will create another account and there will be permissions problems getting at your data.
Read Pondini's TM articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html for the full story. -
Restore from Time Machine fails
I just got a new HD from the apple store and had them flash 10.5.8 onto it so that I could restore my MacBook right when I got home.
The problem is that when I get through to the "Restore from Time Machine" screen, the mac only finds one backup available and even then it won't transfer the files to the new HD, the TM external sits and spins and then the macbook goes through the welcome video again and starts me all over again.
what did I do wrong and did I lose everything?
I just plugged in the TM external to another mac in the house and it sees every thing in TM fine.

One of the problems that I am running into is that when I get to the point where is calculates the size of the files that I want to restore, it sits at calculating then it restarts the set-up assistant.
Ah, that does sound like the backups may be corrupted.
One question and three options:
Did you get a larger drive, or was there a problem with the old one, requiring a replacement? If there was a problem, it's possible something got corrupted on your internal HD before the last backup. When the last backup ran, the damage would have been backed-up, too, and could be why Time Machine is having trouble dealing with it. If so, you probably want the first option below:
Boot up from your Install disc. After selecting your language, select Utilities, then +Disk Utility+ from the menubar on the next screen. Use it to do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your backup drive. If that finds no errors, or fixes whatever it finds, quit Disk Utility, return to the Utilities menu and select +Restore System from Backups,+ per #14 in the FAQ. The advantage here is, you'll get a list of backups to restore from. If the last one won't work, try an earlier one. Be sure to get the log window per step (h), so if it fails or hangs, you'll know where, and we can help figure out how to recover.
Boot up from your Install disc and repair the backups as above. If that finds and fixes errors, boot up normally and try +Setup Assistant+ again. Note that +Setup Assistant+ always uses the most recent backup -- you don't get a choice as with the full restore.
Skip +Setup Assistant.+ Select +Do not Transfer+ instead, and set up a temporary user account (use a different name from any that are on your backups). Then do the +*Repair Disk+* on the backups from the copy of +Disk Utility+ on your Mac. If that finds no errors, or fixes whatever it finds, use +MIgration Assistant,+ per the pink box in #19 of the FAQ. The advantage to it is, you can use it multiple times, so you can transfer one thing at a time, and perhaps bypass whatever's corrupted. But +Migration Assistant+ also uses the most recent backup -- you don't get a choice.
(p.s.: I'll be going to bed soon, so if you post back after half an hour or so, I won't answer until tomorrow.) -
IPhone will not restore from backup after upgrading to iOS4
Hey guys,
I updated to iOS4 just fine on my iPhone 3G 16gb model. Unfortunately, what occurred after that is what's giving me a headache. Whenever I try to restore my iPhone from the backup I created, my laptop keeps freezing when it hits about 8-10% completion. It has no major problems with freezing or locking up, and I'm pretty sure that my iTunes is the problem. My phone will now no longer play my music, nor will it even display half of my custom ringtones(even though they appear on my ringtones list under my iPhone in iTunes), nor will it display any of the songs that I purchased through iTunes on my phone recently.
Most of the other features are working fine, though I have not tested everything. I still receive text messages, phone calls, and can access the internet, so it works how I absolutely need it to, but this is becoming an extremely frustrating ordeal. Please let me know if anyone has experienced something similar or knows of a solution.
Thanks!

You may have to "Restore as New" if you cannot get it to restore from a backup. You will lose your game data but that is about the extent of the effect. -
Full restore from Time Machine fails
I am trying to replace a failing hard drive. The failing drive in in a box. A new one is in the computer.
When I try to run a full restore from Time Machine it comes up with an error saying the restore failed. No useful information like codes or reasons are given.
I'd prefer to do a full restore, but I fear the cause is too much system file corruption on the TM drive. I think the only alternative is to recreate the four user accounts and somehow copy the files back to the accounts.
Before I swapped the drives I set all permissions on the files in each account to admin=read/write, user=read/write, other=read only. I then created a couple incremental backups to Time Machine.
Currently I have 10.5.0 installed. I have to install 10.4, then upgrade, which is a very lengthy process.
The old drive is still (barely) functional. While using it though, if I try to run any program, the system hangs for minutes at a time, (BBOD).
How should I proceed? Is there a way of repairing the backup? Do I try the copying all the files? I have no way of using the Migration feature since I only have the one Mac. I do have a PC.
Thank you in advance.Melnibonean wrote:

It's possible that as the HD was failing, it corrupted something in your installation of OSX, and that was backed-up, so when you restore it, you're restoring damaged items.
Try again, but pick an earlier backup, from before the problems started.
When you do, once it starts, select Window, then +Show Log+ and +Show All logs+ from the menubar. Watch the messages; if it fails again, note what it says. That will tell us, roughly, where it was, so we may be able to avoid it.

Huh? Why would you install Tiger?
How should I proceed? Is there a way of repairing the backup?
Possibly, depending on what's wrong.
Instead of selecting +Restore System from Backup+ from the Utilities menu, select +Disk Utility+ and use it to do a +*Repair Disk+* on the backups (via your Leopard Install disc). Then quit DU and try +Restore System from Backups.+
I have no way of using the Migration feature since I only have the one Mac.
Yes, you do, if the backups are ok. You can use +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant+ from your backups (or a clone), not just another Mac. But they both only use the most recent backup, which may be damaged, so try the full restore first. -

Restarting project from beginning after failing quiz
I have set up an exam at the end of my Captivate 7 project, but I am having trouble getting the performance that I need. I was hoping someone could give me some insight into achieving the performance I want.
I have been able to achieve the following:
-I am allowing the user 3 attempts to pass the quiz
-If they pass any of the attempts, the course is considered complete (and/or passed)
However, I have not been successful at getting this outcome:
If the user fails all 3 attempts, I need the course to be considered complete but failed
Our requirement is that if the user fails the quiz all 3 times, then they must retake the entire course. What I have experienced is that when the user exits after failing, when they try to retake the course, it will take them to the last bookmarked location of the current attempt (in my case, the page after the quiz results slide that lets the user know they failed). It is considering the course Incomplete (and therefore bookmarking to the end) rather than considering it Complete and Failed (and allowing them to repeat the course from a fresh start).
I have tried the following preferences with no luck:
Complete, Success/Completion Criteria: Slide views and/or quiz, with Quiz is passed or the quiz attempt limit is reached. This resulted in the user getting a "complete" status and certificate for the course, even if they failed all 3 times.
Passed/Failed, Success/Completion Criteria: Quiz is passed. This results in the course getting stuck in an Incomplete state after failure. When they exit they don't have the option to retake from the beginning and keep getting bookmarked to the last slide of the project.
Any ideas on how I can set the preferences? I was considering using the Project End Option of Looping the project, but I'm not sure how this will perform. Or maybe I need to use JavaScript to force this? We use SCORM 1.2 / Meridian LMS.
Thanks for considering,
HollyThanks Rod!
Your comments were very helpful. I think your advice on avoiding using Javascript to force the issue was a great tip.
Just as a follow up, I wanted to let you know what my team and I came up with upon further brainstorming. We ended up using some navigation and advanced actions to reset the course internally, without having to involve or upgrade the SCORM.
Here's the solution we are going with:
We allow the user infinite attempts at the exam (under preferences), but are using advanced actions to reset the course if the user fails three times in a row.
From the exam results page, when the user clicks the Continue button, the slide just after the results page has a conditional action that executes On Enter of the page. The action has 3 types of decisions - what happens if they pass, what happens if they fail, and what happens if they fail on an attempt that is a multiple of 3.
If the user passes the exam (if the variable cpQuizInfoTotalCorrectAnswers is greater or equal to 4), then it jumps them to a page letting them know they passed (and under preferences, the course is considered complete once they pass).
If the user fails the exam (cpQuizInfoTotalCorrectAnswers is less than 4), and it is not an attempt on a multiple of three (cpQuizInfoAttempts does not equal 3, does not equal 6, does not equal 9, and does not equal 12), then it jumps to a slide with a button we created called "Retake Exam." The button jumps them back to the introduction to the exam.
If the user fails the exam (cpQuizInfoTotalCorrectAnswers is less than 4), and it is their 3rd attempt, it jumps them to a page that has a "Restart Course" button. This button executes a big advanced action that jumps them to slide 1, resets any user variables to 0, and shows or hides and thing that became unlocked as the user progressed through the course the first time.
We set the actions up so that after 3, 6, 9, or 12 attempts, it will make take them to the "Restart Course" page, figuring by the 12th attempt they should have passed.
Just food for thought and wanted to share the solution.
Thanks for all your help! -

Restoring from TM after re-install
I had a big problem when trying to use a joystick (Macally iStick) with my new Mac Pro running 10.5.3. The stick worked fine two days ago. Then last night it was not recognized. I gave up trying to use it. Then I found I could not move any icons. I finally tried a restart to see if that would solve the issue. My computer would not boot on the restart. It would only go as far as the light gray screen with the dark gray apple and a spinning progress wheel. Finally after trying everything I know, I booted from my install disk, checked that the hardware was OK, then did a "restore" from Time Machine using the last backup - which was before the problem. I felt great about how that went until I tried to boot from the restored disk - Same results- it hung on bootup. I finally gave up and did a new install of the system. I now have 10.5 installed as my system, but evidently from the rest of what I see, the TM restore DID restore everything to its last backup (1 hour prior to the initial problem.) The install I did was "Archive and Install" with a "Previous Systems" folder on the HD.
My questions are:
1. Is it better for me to run all the OS updates using Software Update to achieve 10.5.3, or should I just use TM to restore completely to the backup that was "next to last?"
2. Now both my external Firewire drives and the internal drive used for TM have padlocks on the icons, and I cannot open them because I "do not have sufficient privileges." Disk Utility does not work to regain those privileges. How do I restore my priovileges to those 3 drives?
3. Some hardware and software that migrated from my old G4 running 10.4.11 now doesn't work. It did for 2 weeks after the migration, but now it doesn't. My Microsoft Wireless Mouse is an example. Will restoring to the TM archive (versus using Software Update) regain those items for me?
Sorry this is long, but this is a mess. I feel like I'm using a PC!Joe Vincent wrote:

that really depends on your situation and there is no universal answer. TM restore will give you the exact state of your system at the backup time. However, some problems might be present there already that you may not know about. full TM restore will recreate them.
2. Now both my external Firewire drives and the internal drive used for TM have padlocks on the icons, and I cannot open them because I "do not have sufficient privileges." Disk Utility does not work to regain those privileges. How do I restore my priovileges to those 3 drives?
from an admin account open terminal (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and run the following command:
sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/"drive-name"
put the name of the locked drive in the above. keep the quotes. You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. repeat for every affected drive.
3. Some hardware and software that migrated from my old G4 running 10.4.11 now doesn't work. It did for 2 weeks after the migration, but now it doesn't. My Microsoft Wireless Mouse is an example. Will restoring to the TM archive (versus using Software Update) regain those items for me?
Yes, but see above.

Full restore from Time Machine fails what now!
Just upgraded to 10.8 and all was fine except on crucial pice of software that was supposed to work in 10.8 but didn't.
I tried to revert back to 10.6 via full restore but it failed. Now I just tried to restore from TM backup of the 10.8 restore point.
It fails too. All my HDs check out fine. What went wrong and how can I get back to working?Melnibonean wrote:
