Restoring From TM Backup Produces Kernel Panic

Hi.
OK, so here's how I got to the problem:
My hard drive failed, so I took it to the Apple Store and they gave me a new one (they also replaced a semi-broken SuperDrive and a I got a new 'top case' because of a sticky power button).
Before I left the store, I turned on the computer to make sure it booted.
It played the welcome movie.
I didn't want to set up OS X right in the store, so I held down the power button to turn it off. Once I got home, I turned it on again. It didn't play the welcome movie this time.
Once it got to the point in the installer where I could choose to restore from a TM backup, the backup that I had connected did not appear in the list(it is on one of two partitions of a WD 500GB drive).
So, I pressed cmd-q to quit. It told me that it wasn't done installing, I said restart anyway.
This time, I booted from my Mac OS X installation DVD.
I selected English, then pressed continue and waited for the menu bar to appear.
I chose Utilities-> Restore From Backup.
This time, my backup appeared. I chose my backup volume, then the most recent backup, then my internal drive as the destination.
It began the long (roughly 45 mins) process of copying all my files back.
At the end, I clicked restart.
The computer turned on, and:
Kernel Panic!
So, here's what else I tried:
I've tried erasing and zero-ing out the internal drive, then reinstalling 10.5.2 (what's on my install DVD).
However, the backups I'm restoring from are 10.6.2.
Could the OS difference be a problem?
However, Apple said that they had installed 10.6.2 when I picked up the computer from the repair. And it didn't work even then.
Could it be the partitioning of the backup drive?
Also, a couple weeks ago, I stopped being able to back up with Time Machine.
I got an error message that not all the files were copied, and that the backup had failed. I checked, and yes, the disk was corrupted. I fixed it with Disk Utility. But, I still couldn't back up.
So, I've been restoring from the last backup that I've been able to make.
However, thinking that there might be a problem with that one, I am currently waiting for a restore from a backup made the previous day (roughly 4 backups ago) to finish.
Any ideas, anyone?
How can I fix this without losing my data?
Thanks in advance, any help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated. (Sorry for the long post!)

Yeah, it is the SL disc. I am trying an older backup as I write this.
When you say to erase the drive, which do you mean?
The internal drive, or the backup drive?
internal drive. reformat it with disk utility on the snow leopard dvd and then restore. make sure the drive is formatted correctly. it should have GUID partition scheme and be formatted Mac Os extended journaled. then quit disk utility and proceed with the install. on the reboot after the install is finished you'll get setup assistant which will offer to migrate your data from a TM backup. but don't do any fo this till you tried a full system restore from an earlier time point. it might work.
Do I need to zero-out the drive?
no, there is no need to do that.
Thanks again!

  • Gray Screen of Doom after restoring from TM backup . . .

    OK here's what happened:
I tried installing Vista (32bit and home edition) via boot camp but it asked me to repartition my Mac HD *because some files could not be moved* to a single osx journal.
So I used TM to backup my system before popping in the Snow Leopard installation DVD and formatting + reinstalling OSX. After I got my re-installed system up and going, I popped in the Vista CD again and successfuly installed Windows.
Then, I jumped back on my mac to restore it from a backup (around 250 GB backup); so I rebooted from the OSX DVD again, and selected restore from backup via TM. All was going well, and I left it on overnight while it restored (About 6 hours) . . .
When I checked this morning, my iMac had fallen asleep, so I nudged it awake and found that the restore had been successful and that I needed to restart. Hence, I did.
Upon system restart, the apple logo of course popped out and things were looking well, when suddenly that grey box containing international messages of having to hold down the power button popped out. I did, and the same thing happened when I rebooted. Again and again and again.
So I booted it from Windows now, and making this post.
    Things I've tried:
-Booted from OSX DVD, used repair disk/disk permissions in disk utility on my Mac HD (it said it was OK)
Things I've got in my mind to try:
-Re-restore from the Backup via the OSX DVD again, this time sticking around to restart it upon finish without too much delay (even though I"m not sure if that has anything to do with it)
-Re-install OSX via DVD, and then try restoring.
I will update this when I try these; but in the meantime, I was hoping someone had an easier solution that doesn't require too much time consumption.

    That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, run the Apple Hardware Test, from the separate disc that came with your Mac.

  • Why cant I download apps after restoring from a backup? How to fix?

After I restored my ipod from a backup a month ago, my ipod wont let me download apps. It says "Unable to download app at this time". The thing is I can download when connected to my computer, and when new apps are downloaded on my other devices, they auto-download onto my ipod (Like they did before the restore from the backup) How can I download apps again without connectig to my computer or downloading them on other devices?

Have you tried when connect to another network?
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • My ipod won't sync and it keeps coming up with an error message saying "internal error" or it tries to get me to restore from a backup. All of my music and movies have been wiped from my ipod and the apps don't work. The backups don't work either. help.

I plugged my ipod touch into my computer to sync it and it came up with an error message saying that it encoutered an internal error and it refused to sync.
I then unplugged it and plugged it back in and this time it told me that I needed to restore from a backup or set it up as a new ipod. I tried to restore from a backup but it came up with the error message "Backup session failed" every time. I then looked on my ipod and all of my music and movies are gone though it still says that they are on the ipod in itunes. I decided to use the restore function and let that finish. After restoring it still doesn't allow me to sync or back up and The music and movies can still not be seen. I am currently attempting to copy the music and movies to my ipod though this did not work with my apps as they transfered but when I attempted to open them they just crash... If someone could please help me it would be great. It is driving me crazy.

If you get an error that says can't backup, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location and thry again. again. You can find the location of the backup file here:

  • I previously had an iTouch, now a new iPhone. Setup as new iPhone, or restore from iTouch backup?

I previously had an iTouch (3rd generation - 32 GB), now I have a new iPhone 4S. During the beginning of the setup process in iTunes, after reegistering the new iPhone with APPLE, when I am asked to set it up as new iPhone, or to restore it from my previous iTouch backup, which do I choose? It isn't clear to me, and I can't find the answer anywhere.
If I choose to set it up as a new iPhone, will I lose all my apps and all my previous settings (and start over)?
My computer is a MacBook laptop.

If you set up it as new, you will lose the settings, but not your apps. You can try to restore from the backup because you will recover your settings and your apps automatically

  • HT3406 If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old phone.  Will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to the computer?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some

If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old iphone to a new one, will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to that same computer every now and then?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some way?  In other words, are the two phones treated as different devices when the "restore" option is used to set up the new phone?   Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can use the old iPhone as an iPod touch.

  • HT201269 iTunes is recognizing my iPod as a new iPod even though I have my old stuff restored to it and it says the name of it but still asks to set up as new iPod or restore from a backup.

iTunes is recoznizing my iPod as a new iPod and only gives me the options of set up as new iPod or to restore from a backup. I put my old backup on it and everytime I plug it in it still recognizes it as a new iPod. I've tried restoring it several times and it doesn't help anything and I've also uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it but it didn't help. Please I really need some help I can't download any music with it doing this.

There maybe better ways to do this, but this worked for me when things stopped working a couple of updates back.
Try this; Make sure your stuff is backed up on your computer first. plug the iPod to your computer and do the restore to factory setting. Then set up as if it's a brand new out of the box iPod. (DON"T use your backup copy) Go through all the steps of first time set up. Once complete, add back all your stuff, music, apps, pictures, etc. from your computer. I know it's a pain, but it worked for me.
By the way; the reason I'm doing this total restore is the RED square in the RED circle. All my music downloaded from CDs became unreadable / unplayable today, (worked fine yesterday-- today crap!!) and none of the fixes listed in this forum would work for me. So I started over, after the restore, the RED circles are gone and my music is playing.
    Hope it works, Good Luck!

  • Lost contacts, restored from a backup and now lost all photos

My wifes iphone 4s just lost all her contacts out of the blue. I tried to restore her contacts from a old backup and now she has lost a LOT of VERY important photos that were saved on her phone. Photos for her collage final "capstone" project before graduating.
WHAT can i do to get them back????
Phone has not been backed up since 6/12 and when we conected it to the computer (after ALL her contacts have just dissapeared) we attempted to get them back by restoreing from that backup. once finished all her contacts were back but now she is missing almost 400 photos.
    PLEASE is there a way.....

You cannot recover the photos.  They were overwritten by the restore. If your father had enabled PhotoStream they might still be available, but again, only if this had already been enabled.

  • Can you restore from a backup that was made on a previous version of iOS?

    Hello.
I had an iPhone 3GS unning whatever the latest proper version of iOS currently is at the time of writing (4.3.5, is it?) but on Saturday I was on a rather drunken night out and I lost my phone.
    Silly me.
But I was out of contract and the new iPhone (4S or 5 or whatever) is going to be announced on Tuesday next week (just been confirmed by Apple today) so I'm just going to make do with an old, spare Nokia until the new iPhone is available in the UK.
Once the new iPhone launches I will buy it, plug it into iTunes and just restore from backup and I'm back in business.
Except for one thing... The new iPhone will have iOS 5 installed and my last backup before I lost my 3GS was done on iOS 4.3.5.
Is this going to be a problem or can you restore from a backup made with an older version of the OS?
I've never done it before so I don't know.
    J

You "should" have no problem doing that. I say should, because you can't restore a backup made with a higher iOS on a device running a lower iOS, I.E. - you can't restore a backup made from a device running, let's say iOS 4.3.5 on a device running iOS 4.2.10. However, iOS 5.0 will present many new features and since it has not been released, I have no way of stating with certainty that doing as you plan will not present any problems. Past history indicates it won't, but we'll have to wait & see.

    Hi again razmee209!
It has been updating since your last message and it says there's another 6 hours to go, does this sound right or is there a possibility I've been sent a re-con and the update will slow down my new handset considerably?!

  • Is it possible to restore from a backup after initial setup on my iPad air?

is it possible to restore from a backup after initial setup on my iPad air?

You don't even have to do to an erase all content and settings.
Just connect the iPad to iTunes. Once it appears on the left, right click on it and select restore from backup. It's that easy.

  • Iphone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore, only option available now is to "restore and update" however this will not work, how can you restore from a backup once in recovery mode and only option is "restore and upgrade"? Please help!

iPhone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore it. Now the only option iTunes allows is for "restore & upgrade", it is not offer an option to restore from a backup, says that must first do the upgrade, when attempting to do the upgrade the iPhone won't accept it.
How can I restore from a back up in recovery mode when the only option is "restore and upgrade"?
    Please help.

You don't you must restore your phone first and then you will have the option to restore from your backup.

  • I restored from iTunes backup but it goes back to 'welcome to your new iphone'

My iphone 5 was replaced today because of a faulty power button. I had done an iTunes backup this morning, choosing to backup iTunes purchases and the apps as well.
In order to restore the backup to my new phone I had to set it up as a new phone and update to 7.1.2. All good so far.
I then chose to restore from backup (dated today) and it all seemed fine until the restore was complete and the iphone restarted and I was taken back to the 'Welcome to Your New iPhone' screen. Thankfully my photos and contacts have come across but none of my iTunes library, emails or most of my apps. What I'd really like to retrieve are the notes I had in Notemaster...lots of important details about trip bookings, finances etc.
I suspect an incomplete/corrupt backup was made this morning as I think I'd used about 47gb on my phone and the backup file in my application support folder is 11.8gb (although I don't imagine that folder would include all the video & music from my iTunes library??). I thought I could go back to the backup I made in June but it looks like it was overwritten by the new backup I made today...is that right?
Can anyone please suggest a fix or am I going to have to set it up as a new phone in order to get past the 'welcome to your new iphone' screen. First I'd somehow have to back up all my photos and contacts or I'll probably lose them.
Actually, I've just downloaded iBackupBot and I can see all my notes in the backup I made this morning so they do still exist even though the app didn't download in the restore, in fact it looks like a lot of my user app files are there. What do I do now? My head hurts h e l p . . . p l e a s e

I don't think that you need to restore from the backup again. If you see nothing at all in the App Store. Try closing the app completely, reset your iPad and them try again.
In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
