Restoring iCal calendars after disk crash

OK, I haven't found this on any discussions I've read so far.
My disk died on my MacBook Pro on Wednesday. It's in the shop. Fortunately I had backed it up on the Saturday before. Now I am temporarily using my iMac. Both are (were) on Leopard.
My question is - what did Apple do to the calendar files!? Through Tiger, calendar files were .ics files, and they corresponded directly to my different calendars by name. When I went to Library/Calendars, some of those were there, but they were ones from long ago. However, there were all these .calendar folders there with an Event folder and a file called info.plist in each of them.
In the Events folders for all these are files named, for example, 00C6C072-2C48-4B99-B3A2-B3241655578A.ics, and these .ics files are the only ones iCal seems to want to import. But when I import them, they are single events, as far as I can tell and the name of the "calendar" in my Calendars list in iCal is, for example, 00C6C072-2C48-4B99-B3A2-B3241655578A. This, of course, isn't at all helpful in trying to restore old calendars - or new ones - by importing them. So, it seems to me that Import is useless in this situation or any other.
Has anyone got any info that can help me understand what they've done here and why (well, no one probably wants to know why), and how I get my calendars back?
Hopefully the tech fixing my MacBook Pro will be able to recover some data from the disk drive, and the old calendars will be among the data recovered, but even then, with this new system of saving calendars and events, how does one import calendars into the newly installed iCal?
I'm not looking forward to having to rebuild my calendars, but it's looking as if I may have to. So far, this design of iCal is not a better idea.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Well I finally solved the problem. The confusion is in the wording.
Both iCal and Address Book have functions that work well to move calendars and contacts from one machine to the other.
Menu\File\Back up Database.
Menu\File\Revert to Database Backup.
Well I was scared of the Revert to Database Backup. It works. When you do so, you just point the program to the backup that you just made from the other machine, if it's what you are trying to accomplish.
I hope this might help you.
Maybe everybody knows how to do this and I am a slow brain - Leon.

  • Recovery Oracle 10g XE after disk crash

    Hi!
I am trying to recover 10g XE database for my colleague and experiencing some problems that I cannot resolve.
He had mayor overheating problem and disk crash due to the failure of air conditioning.
    OS: Windows Server 2003
    DB Version: 10.2.0.1.0
After disk crashed I've managed to save image of Oracle data files and tried to recover database using them.
Database was not running in archive log mode so all files that I had were database files, control file, parameter file and redo logs.
First error that I experienced on newly installation of Oracle Express Edition (10.2.0.1.0) was:
    SQL> startup
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 188743680 bytes
    Fixed Size 1286460 bytes
    Variable Size 62918340 bytes
    Database Buffers 121634816 bytes
    Redo Buffers 2904064 bytes
ORA-00227: corrupt block detected in control file: (block 16, # blocks 1)
    ORA-00202: control file: 'C:\ORACLEXE\ORADATA\XE\CONTROL.DBF'
By default Oracle XE creates just one control file so I had just one incarnation of control file and apparently that file was corrupted so I tried to recreate control file.
With "ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE" I've created script for new control file but after script execution received error.
    SQL> @c:\ctlfile.sql
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 188743680 bytes
    Fixed Size 1286460 bytes
    Variable Size 62918340 bytes
    Database Buffers 121634816 bytes
    Redo Buffers 2904064 bytes
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed
ORA-01161: database name \E in file header does not match given name of XE
    ORA-01110: data file 4: 'C:\ORACLEXE\ORADATA\XE\USERS.DBF'
    I also tried to use:
"CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG..." in script but received the same errors.
Apparently database name is wrongly written in header of USERS.DBF and I don't know how to overcome this problem. Possible character set problem or data file corruption...
I used "CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8" character set.
I don't have any RMAN backups because all tapes were destroyed along with tape drive due to the air conditioning failure what caused overheating of small server room.
So if you have any idea how to open database I would be grateful for help.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately this Metalink note is not solution to my problem.
My problem is database name written in the file header which is - "\E":
ORA-01161: database name \E in file header does not match given name of XE
It is obvious that database name stated in control file is not "\E" and because of that create control file script fails.
I don't know is data file corrupted and because of that I have in file header "\E", or this is some problem due to the character set, or XE Oracle software version, or something like that.
    Anyway thanks for your help!

  • New HD after disk crash : how restore original partitioning scheme

Hello, After a mechanical disk crash, american version, I have to replace the hard drive of a X220, american version. Windows 7 Pro was in English.I have two VHD files backup to an external drive, as well as a repair disk. One VHD file is 348 MB and one 199 GB.I could check that the second one contains Windows 7 with software and user files.I assume that the first VHD file is the EFI partition. Because of the mechanical failure there is of course no "recovery partition".I do have a CD of Windows 7 Pro in French if required, but I assume the VHD files should suffice. My question is : how to restore the original partitioning sheme?Which is the size of partitions in bytes and in which order are they? Can someone post the output the partition table (for instance Linux's  "gdisk -l" from a bootable CD or USB key) for an X220 ? Thanks a lot.

Pete291 I am showing a Photoshop CS6 full version serial number for Windows under your account at http://www.adobe.com/.  Please make sure you are utilizing the serial number which ends with 94.  You can find more details on how to locate your serial number at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
If you are using the serial number registered under your account then you can please provide additional details.  Why are you reinstalling Photoshop CS6?  Did you restore/migrate/transfer/copy files previously to this installation?

  • How to restore sys after disk crash

Have HP Pavillion dv9500 laptop with Vista Op System. I had disk crash. Not recoverable. No recovery disks. I have ordered a refurbished exact same disk drive 120GB. How do I reload operating system onto refurbished disk and get system operable?  I have a windows 7 home op system disk and license. Can I install the windows 7 or do I have to find a vista op system? What are the steps required to make laptop operable again?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I don't know the damage of the old HDD therefore can't not say much. Now you've got new HDD, new OS (Windows 7 disc), my suggestion: install Windows 7 to new HDD from scratch and work out how to recover data/files on the old HDD. If no physical damage, you can recover data from it then use it as an external HDD such as put it in an enclosure.
    Happy New Year.

  • How do you restore iCal calendars in Time Machine

I recently updated to iCloud from Mobile Me and when I opened iCal I noticed that the Mobile Me calendars and the iCloud Calendars were the same, so I deleted all my Mobile Me calendars and to my horror realized after reopening iCal that all the caledars were deleted in the iCloud calendar as well.
How do I restore those calendars via Time Machine? I am running OS X Lion and although I have made the terminal change so I can see my user Library folder, within Time Machine it does not show up.
    Help!!

Well, I guess they're not really ical backups, per se.
When i went to migrate MobileMe to iCloud, it said "make sure you back up your calendars first" and I almost didn't do it because I figured I have TM if I need it, but decided just to be safe...
so I did file>export>export for each calendar.
Then after the migration seemed to go smoothly, I deleted them.
    Then got into this snafu.
Fortunately, was able to TM back to the desktop from right before I erased them.
so I restored them, then imported them one by one, and so far it looks like everything is good.  Knock on wood.
It's still frightening to me though that an accidental deletion from the cloud turns into a day of screwing around to restore things!!  It shouldn't be that easy to just permanently erase so much important data. I shouldn't have to manually export all my calendars every day if I want a backup...

  • Reconnect to existing Time Machine after disk crash?

    Hi guys!
My GF's MBP disk crashed a few days ago.
We've been backing it up to a NAS for the last few months.
Now, after replacing the disk and reinstalling OSX Mavericks, we want to make Time Machine use the old sparsebundle as it's backup target.
You know, pick up where it left and so on.
Problem is we dont know how to do that.
The Time Machine prefs seems to only want to let us choose the VOLUME - not a particular existing archive.
    Isn't this possible?
Honestly, it would be surprisingly impractical if it isn't.
    Thank you for constructive replies!
    Cheers;
    Eivind

Thank you Eric for your fast answer.
this worked and now I have a running SL system. I guess I try to install maverics first and then use the emigration assistent to recover my data.
Still its a pitty that the time machine backup didn't do what it was supposed to. The workarround is very timeconsuming and leaves some concerns about my data and the future safety of time machine backups.

  • Recovering slideshows and calendar after iPhoto6 crashes?

I installed iLife 06 yesterday (upgrade from iLife4). Very excited with the new features in iPhoto 6!
When I was building a calendar iPhoto unexpectedly crashed and shut down 4 times. I wasn't doing anything unusual. Each time iPhoto 6 opened up again my slideshows and calendar were there. Then it froze as I was scrolling through albums. I had to Force Quit to get out of it. When I reopened iPhoto all the slideshows I made earlier in the day were gone as well as the calendar I was working on, the settings I had for iPhoto (appearance etc) were also gone. It then went through a long process of reformatting (?) the thumbnail caches?
Is there any chance in recovering the slide shows and calendar? Anyway to prevent the loss of either items in the future? Does anyone know why iPhoto 6 kept crashing and closing on me in calendar mode?
I have ran utility and Tiger disc repair and everything checked out fine. Has to be something in iPhoto6. I do have quite a few high res pics (4,000+) but this new version is "supposed" to handle 250,000 photos.
Anyone have any thoughts, advice, kind words????
Many thanks as always for your help.
    Bob

    Hi
I may have the same issue as crags. I find that when I load iPhoto 06 it crashes almost everytime. I have watched what it does in Activity Monitor and as it loads it seems to use over 90% of my CPU and the memory usage just increases constantly even when it is marked as "not responding".
I have tried creating a new library (after which I imported my old library from a backup) and it worked fine for a couple days (although only when Pages was not open - possible conflict with iWork 06?) before it went back to crashing everytime I open it. I have reinstalled iPhoto (after removing the supporting files in Library) as some people have suggested and I am back to where I started.
Is there perhaps some cascading error that has to do with running OS X 10.4.6, iPhoto 06 and/or iWork 06?
If the library I imported was somehow corrupt, would it have to do with the images themselves or some other aspect of the library. I would like to preserve my tags as I have about 9500 images that have all been tagged as well as all my smart folders I don't want to lose.
At the same time I want iPhoto working properly. I have come to depend on it to handle my photos.
    Help? Please?

  • Relink an existing iCal calendar after re-installed the OS10.5

    Hi all,
I have to re-install the OS10.5 because I couldn't be able to login to the machine.
I have an iCal calendar which published and shared to my colleagues before I reinstalled the OS. Now I would like to link back the existing calendar with the same name without any interruption for other people.
    Anyone can help?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can certainly transfer older data files from one computer to another under most circumstances, but you should always do so using the Migration Assistant on your new machine to transfer your entire user account, and never try to selectively copy bits and pieces of one environment to the other. Doing so under limited circumstances may result in the desired outcome, but the process is severely complicated when OS X generations differ from one to the other - when, for example, you want to move OS X 10.3.9 data to a new, intel-based 10.4.8 machine.
There are several reason why such moves are prone to fail, including the different file structures used across OS X applications between generations, the differing storage locations for such files, subtle and often unapparent but critical differences in PowerPC and intel versions of the OS, and their supporting applications like iCal and the Address Book.
Here is more information on the Migration Assistant:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
That article outlines the best practices for moving data from one machine to another, and from Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later to Mac OS X 10.4 of any generation.
The version of iCal you downloaded is incompatible both with Mac OS X 10.4 and later, and with the intel platform you attempted to install it on. The way to reinstall, upgrade or update iCal 2 and later under Mac OS X 10.4 or later, is explained here:

  • How do I restore my calendar after a Thunderbird crash?

While attempting to print out an email (no attachments) Thunderbird crashed. After restoring Thunderbird (and able to view all my email accounts) I opened my calendar via the "Events and Tasks" tab. The calendar opens up but no content that I had created in the calendar or that came in from outside meeting invitations. If I go directly to Google calendar via Firefox, the contents are there. However I cannot access my google calendar from the Thunderbird calendar. Google Calendar shows as an option under "calendar" to left of the actual calendar.

I remember having had a similar situation.
Perhaps in the [[Add-Ons and Extensions FAQ#w_how-do-i-see-which-add-ons-are-installed|add-on menu]] the Lightning extension is disabled or no longer visible? If so, re-enable it.
Alternatively, you may disable (or even uninstall), quit Thunderbird, then enable (re-install); I think this is what I did. Data should not get lost, but of course you'd always rather [[Profiles TB#w_backing-up-a-profile|backup]] before doing any critical procedure.

  • Problems restoring Backup after disk crash & exchange

Recently, the harddisk in my iBook started acting up and eventually died. I had made a backup three days prior to the crash, so I still have (most of) my data.
I brought my iBook to an Apple repair shop, where they mounted a new hard disk. So far so good.
Unfortunately, I've been trying to put my backup on the new disk for the last five days, without succes.
At first I thought it might have had to do with the diskimage I had, like "unreadable" names, but even after rewriting the image to a read/write one, and deleting or renaming the files that had unfortunate signs in it, I still keep getting an error, namely
" An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory) "
I can't find what's going wrong, I tried everything I could come up with - even simply extracting the files to the disk, but this of course skips most of the hidden files; and when doing this from within the terminal, I still get "Permission denied" errors...
If anyone could help me on this one, I'd be very grateful!
Ah yes, the backup is on an external FW disk, from which I can also boot - which is what I'm doing right now as well; so it's not that I can't write to the disk because it's busy as the bootdisk.

    *\mood happy*
Booting still failed this morning... So I thought I'd delete some files from the image to make it copy faster...
I tried Silver Keeper again (when choosing a source, it asks whether one wants the destination to become bootable); and this time - it worked.
I have CCC as well, but haven't tried it.
Anyway - the disk has now been restored and is bootable, so I'm happy. I'll still have to copy back a few directories (the ones I deleted, together around 40gigs, homemade pictures and movies... Not really necessary for a diskrestore at first, I figured), but it works now.
Thank you again; for helping me, but also for teaching me (indirectly as well) a few things about the Mac filesystem.
*end of report with a successful recovery*
    Piotr

I have a intel MacBook Pro (2008). Hard drive crashed. I replaced the drive and all is well with that. I re-installed Leopard and the Snow Leopard upgrade. Now I am trying to restore all my files/data from my external LaCie drive. All I am seeing is it says "copying to volumes". I don't see the files or anything on my new drive. What am I doing wrong??

  • System recovery from time machine after disk crash

    Hi there,
recently I am a little unluky with my backup strategy. Here is my latest issue - I am glad if anyone has hints or advice.
On my macbook pro (mid 2009, originally SL) updated till the latest version of Mavericks I recently had a hard disc crash. I replaced the hard drive and wanted to restore my system (and data) from my time machine backup. This Backup is encrypted (in case this gives a hint for something).
What I did is I insert the Snow leopard disk, boot from it and first formated the new HD to the suggested standard for intel based MACs and then chose the option to restore from a time machine backup. I found the time capsule, connected with password, found the backed up files with date and tried to install.
    First attemp failed.
    Second attemp succed after 10h
Then with the mandatory reboot the system didn't start but stopped with:
    panic(cpu 1 caller...
So I decided to install the SL system and try to restore from there in whatever way. Did that and 1 hour later the installation was successfully - Reboot - and then the computer asked for my Log in data (with my Log in Name - which I so far did not set on this installation or on this disk - very suprised. More suprised my password (which I use for 4 years now) did not work.
so back to option 1 try to restore from Time machine.
Ahead of that I reset the PRAM . Now I choose a backup version of an earlier date. This time the installation couldn't be finished but I got the log file.
I couldn't attach the file and didn't want to post it over severl pages...(is there a good way for that, only found adding pictures?)
    Well - that's where I am stuck...
Any help is apreciated very much.

Thank you Eric for your fast answer.

  • Reinstall Itunes after disk crash

    Hi folks
Maybe a simple question for You, but not for me :o)
Three weeks ago the disk on my HP Pavilion DV8 crashed. The operatingsystem is Windows 7.
Today I received y HP with a new harddisk, and a new Windows 7 installation.
After having installed a lot of programs, I also install Itunes.
But what will happen the first time i connect my Iphone 3GS?
Will al data on the phone (contacts, calendar data, applications and so on) be delete on the Iphone?
What to do to save all I have?
    Best regards
    Carsten

You need to copy everything from your backup copy of the old computer to the new one.
When you sync the itunes content ( apps/music/vid) will be erased and replaced with content from the new computer.
If you sync contacts and calendars to a blank computer, then those will be erased as well.
One of the many reason that always maintaining a backup copy is so basic, is the very situation.
Use your backup to put everything on the new computer.

  • Unable to restore iCal data after total loss due to iCloud

I believe iCloud is the cause for all my iCal data dissapearing. I have time machine running but am still not able to restore my iCal Data. I can not find the iCal data in the TimeMachine. Any suggestions?

iCal data can be found in the Time Machine backups here: ~/Library/Calendars
Find this folder in your Time Machine interface, choose it, click "Restore" and then "Replace" when prompted.
When you exit Time Machine and go back into iCal all the entries should look the same as the day you chose to restore them from.
If you don't have a backup.......sorry. There's no magic trick to bring it back. I've noticed that the preferred order of operations for first time iCloud syncing goes like this:
Set up iCloud on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Log in at iCloud.com and make sure everything is correct on the site.
Set up iCloud on your Mac/PC.
No iOS device? Just make sure you have a backup or you export the calendars to a safe place before setting up iCloud on your computer. You may need to import your backups after the initial iCloud sync.
