Restoring iphone from backup in itunes

Hi,
I have just plugged my iphone into my itunes for the first time and have been asked if I want to set up as new or restore from backup. Lots of good threads advising that setting up as new doesn't wipe anything - thanks.
However, the last backup date is from when I had an old iphone that broke and I hadn't backed up to icloud, so I am wondering if I click restore from backup can I get back the photos I thought I had lost without wiping the stuff on my new phone?
Thanks!

Sorry... No.
A restore from backup replaces what is currently on the Device with the contents of the Backup.

  • Restoring iPhone from backup using iTunes

My wife upgraded her iPhone to iOS 5.  Unfortunately, she lost all her photos.  She says she used backup, however, while following the instruction on the Apple support, we back up once more.  Now, the only restore option is the latest one which doesn't contain her photos.  Is there a way to get her iphone photos before she upgraded to iOS5?

    any ideas?

  • Restoring iphone from backup

is anyone else having trouble restoring iphone from backup since 2.0. it worked fine with 1.4 but i have tried it once with 2.0 and once 2.0.1 both times it said my backup was corrupt. this is getting real annoying.

I'm about to just thow my iphone 3G out the window. I cannot upgrade the software without it hanging up and not finishing. Then I am forced to try to restore the phone, and it will not restore. I am taking it to an apple genius again today to get it restored. I have not gotten any information that has helped resolve this issue. I've been on the phone with a tier 1 and tier 2 support person for 4 hours about 3 weeks ago and I'm now in the same boat again. Any info on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated!!

  • IPhone has been syncing for 2 hrs, now iTunes doesn't recognize my phone and is "restoring iPhone from backup"

It's been a while since I've synced with my computer (yes, I'm still on iOS 4.0). Tonight I finally synced all my music, apps, purchases, etc. Tried to import all photos into iPhoto (tried 3 times) and about a third of the way through my 3,000 files it quit on me and didn't import a single thing.
After I did a manual backup of the phone, iTunes said it would download the file to update my iOS to 5.0. Took almost an hour to get the update file... and now iTunes no longer sees my iPhone as "Erica's iPhone," it's just a generic iPhone symbol and it says "Set up your iPhone" / "This computer has previously been synced with an iPhone or other device" / "Restore from backup" which started automatically. Am I about to lose everything on my phone?!?!?!
    Help!

  • ITunes could not restore iPhone (from backup) because not enough free space on *iPhone*?!

    Hey everyone,
I recently upgraded to iOS 6 and before I upgraded, I made sure to make a backup because I know upgrading to the new OS can often cause people to lose their things. After upgrading to iOS 6, I found I had everything except for all my messages and some of my contacts (it appears all contacts I added within the past 6-7 months or so are gone, but the older ones are there). I need my messages and those newer contacts, so I want to restore from the backup I made before upgrading to iOS 6, but unfortunately, I get an error message saying iTunes could not restore from backup because there is not enough free space on my iPhone. Note, not my computer or my hard disk, my iPhone. First of all I don't see why I would need free space on my iPhone to restore it, and secondly, I have about 5GBs of free space on it. What can I do?

Yes. Those are the only ones saved by iTunes, as the working assumption is that all the other photos are on your computer and thus can be synced from that source, without the backup duplicating them and taking long time and lots of space. Photos on the camera roll are assumed to be not yet Transferred.
    A few random-thoughts suggestions...
Not sure if you tried this multiple times, but it might worth doing. Just remember to cancell the Sync as soon after connecting so you don't overwrite the backup.
    1. Check if you still have an older backup that might have the pictures. Follow the instruction by user Linda Custer in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13011509#13011509
    2. Check the links in the More Like This box on the right, or do a search for your issue on these forums or on Google.
    3. Find third party utilities that treat the iPhone as an external USB disk and therefore allow for extracting photo files directly from the device, bypassing iTunes. Search here, Google or check MacUpdate:  http://www.macupdate.com/
And perhaps the most obvious, that I forgot to ask about:
    4. If you switched iCloud on, and selected backup to iCloud you should have a backup outside of your computer; just select the iCloud backup, instead of the local one, for Restore.
    5. If you switched iCloud on and checked PhotoStream on, you should have the camera roll photos in the cloud and can retrieve them from the cloud via the Web site, your Photo app, etc.
    Good luck.

  • Restoring iPhone from backup freezes my computer

I need to restore my iPhone from a previous backup (I think it's corrupt). When I plug it into my PC, it works normally. Everything syncs correctly to iTunes and works as expected. When I go to restore from a previous backup, it looks like it'll work fine, but midway my PC will freeze every time, forcing me to shut it down completely. The iPhone does restore part of the way, but acts as new when it comes to alarms, notes, passwords, home screen, contact ring tones, etc.
This has happened to EVERY iPhone I've ever used (3). I've reinstalled iTunes several times, updated drivers, updated USB drivers, ran iTunes in "safe mode" ... I've tried everything I can think of and research. Why will it freeze my computer every time with every iPhone???
The version of iPhone I'm currently using is 4S (but I've also tried with 3G and 4), firmware is up to date, iTunes is 10.6.3.25.
My computer is a PC that uses Windows 7.
If you have any other advice, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks

Obviously, the problem is with your PC.  Try creating a new user account and see if you have the same problem. If you don't, then the problem is in your user profile. If you do, you're going to have to dig deeper. Try a Windows forum or one dedicated to your specific make/model PC.

  • Restoring iphone from backup estimating time remaining stuck

I have been updating my boyfriend's iphone.  It has not been updated for a while.  I backed up everything on itunes.  I then went to restore (the first time) and within 10-15 minutes it said there was 1 hour left, 2 hour left, 3 hours left.  I did something else for about 20/30 minutes, came back to my computer and it was asleep and everything had ended.  It did not finish.
I have now tried to restore a couple times and cannot get past the estimated time remaining.....  What do I do?  It's been "estimating time" for about a half hour.
    Please help.  Beyond frustrated.

Just got an Iphone 5, trying to restore it from my Iphone 4 backup. I just shows estimating time remaining for the past hour and a half. Might just leave it up and hopefully something will happen.

  • How to restore iphone from backup?

I recently updated to 4.1 but lost all my contacts... how can I restore them from my itunes backup? thanks

Maybe, unless there is a problem with your iPhone's backup and it sounds like there is a problem with it or you wouldn't have lost any contacts.
Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer and should be available on your computer with or without an iPhone or any cell phone. Not a good idea to depend on your cell phone alone for this data, which can be lost or stolen.
To restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, select Restore under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. When prompted to update your iPhone's backup, as the first step after selecting Restore, decline this prompt.
Go to iTunes > Preferences. Under the Devices tab, how many backups are shown? If more than one, what is the date and time shown for each backup? If there is more than one backup, you may not want to select the current backup - select a previous backup when restoring your iPhone with iTunes. After the firmware is re-installed, you will be prompted to restore from the backup, which is the default selection. If there is more than one backup available, the most recent backup will be selected by default. If more than one backup is available, you can select from another or previous backup.

  • Restoring iphone from backup help

I recently reinstalled OS X on my laptop and subsequently erased all my contacts from that computer. I tried (without too much research beforehand) syncing my contacts to the laptop only to have all of my contacts erased on my iphone. No big deal. I restored from the back up, but when the iphone reboots, it automatically syncs back up to the laptop and I loose all my contacts on the iphone again if I don't disconnect my iphone from the computer, before I click cancel on the dialogue window alerting me to a new iphone software update. I have gone into preferences and checked 'Prevent iphone/ipod from automatically syncing" but that don't work. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Put at least one contact in the address book app on your computer. It can be a fake contact, doesn't matter. After you restore your phone from your backup, you can then sync. When the popup comes, select "merge" for your contacts. They will then be populated in the address book app. You can then delete your "fake" contact. Do the same with ical if you have any appointments you want to save. Are your music and apps still in itunes?

  • How to restore iPhone from backup, not working right

Hello, today I updated my iPhone to the latest version (6.1.2?) and after it was finished, or not finished, it came up on my PC saying it could not be updated and had to be restored for some reason. So, I restored it, knowing my phone backs up everytime I sync it. It last restored at 4 o clock today, before I updated it. So, I went to restore from backup, it started, ran for about a minute, then popped up saying it could not be restored from backup because the backup could not be found on my computer. I see the backup very clearly on my iTunes, it's there. Now it shows up like a new iPhone and it's wiped out. I had very important documents on my notes, plus text messages I needed, and this isn't working. I'm livid about this, please help.

  • Restoring iphone from backup did not recover contacts

So I had to restore my iphone to factory.  I backed up my phone (4s with latest OS) to itunes then reset phone via the general settings menu.  I go to restore my phone from the backup and it syncs apps and music - but not settings and contacts.  I also tried to restore to factory from the itunes menu and it takes about 55 minutes.  The first time I tried, it got to 5 minutes left and froze my computer.  What could be the issues - and what can I do to successfully restore my phone with the contacts and such?

    Here's what I would try:
    BACKUP and RESTORE:
Double check the DATE and TIME of the backup you are trying to restore from.
If this doesn't work, you can try restoring using a different method. This involves putting your iPhone into recovery mode. You can do this by following the steps in this article:

I hope this helps, even a little bit-- I know this kinda stuff can get frustrating! Let us know

  • Restoring iPhone from backup... 20 hours remaining.

This is ridiculous. I'm upgrading from iPhone 4 to iOS5 and I started the upgrade at around 1pm today. It's now 11:37pm, it's not even halfway through it and it says 19 hours left. I don't know if this is normal or whether I should cancel it or restart it. What's even worse is that the amount of hours keeps going up. Earlier it was 15 minutes, then when I looked again it was 7 hours and now... 20! It's hardly moved across the bar too.
    Any advice?

    Please note the following:
    • People who are contributing in such forums should be solution focused rather than blamers.
"which should be much more often than every 5 months"
    • Again, what is the value of having weekly back up if the back up it self doesn’t work.
    • Your question "How did the 1500 contacts get on your iPhone in the first place" what answer you expect, through out look, through google contacts… CSV file, however, this would not add any value to our discussion, anyway; I appreciate your question if your intent was to help but your previous attitude doesn’t show that.
    • Finally, I works in community and I do user-to-user support in many places, I tried always to be objective as much as I can despite of the fact that I am supporting one of the best products on the word, your answers are far away from objectiveness.
    My Advice is:
    • This kind of threads categorized as real time support thread (since one hour, I am still waiting...), where focusing on the solution is far away better that mentioning how to prevent this problem from happening in the future.
    • As you are not an apple employee and you are writing what you think is true, objectiveness and creditability is as important as knowledge, you should not blame me of not doing a backup since 5 months and in the same time don’t say a word against this bug in iTunes!!! Community transparency improves software industry my friend.
Finally, I solved the problem while I was googling on different forum, simply; I need to unplug and do restart then re-plug it and do restore which doesn’t take more that 5 minutes.
Thanks for your time, It was really tough time… forgive my being offensive.
