Restoring iPhoto and iTubes from Carbonite backup

My iMac crashed when upgrading to Mountain Lion - no biggie in my mind as I have Carbonite and all my data was backed up to the cloud...... my data might be there but not in a manner that will easily restore into iTunes or iPhoto! Carbonite customer service has not been helpful at all as they see it as an Apple problem. So my question is two-fold....
Does anyone have any suggestions as how to restore my photos and music on my Mac? When I look, all the files and data is there - I just can't figure out how to restore it into iTune and iPhoto!
Any suggestions to an online backup service that works well with a Mac?

Ouch' sorry to hear that.
Personally I do not trust any online backup service or rely totally on TimeMachine. For backups I use Carbon Copy Cloner to an External Hard Drive, TimeMachine to a second and then store my most cherished memories on a third and put it into the FireSafe.

  • How to restore SMS and iMessage from itunes backup?

Hi, I made a backup with itunes, and made a clean install of iOS 7.1.1. When I was going to recover all my data, iTunes told me that the backup was corrupt (and I only had that backup) Using iBackUp Bot and the information linked to iCloud, I was able to recover everything from that corrupted backup, except for my sms. But in the storage section of Configuration, I can see like 1gb of data in sms, although the Messages app is empty.
Any ideas or help about how import my sms back to the iphone?
    Thanks!

Same issue, previous device backed up to iCloud, then setting up new device, did the restore from icloud backup that I made last week, but camera roll is empty.
iCloud help says Camera roll is backed up. Checked iCloud backup, Camera roll is there.
Forums suggest restore from itunes, tried ... but again empty camera roll.
Clear all settings and data, as suggested in forums, bearing in mind its a new device, restore from back up, not USB but Wifi only, still empty camera roll.
Wiped it, tried restore again, still no Camera roll. Lot sof shared photostreams, but not my photos.
Download icloud PC app, only options for photos is Photostreams, no camera roll.
No way of accessing camera roll through itunes, or icloud app, or icloud.com
Is there really any point in iCloud backing up camera roll if it cant restore ?
    Any suggestions, would be appreciated.

It's says that file does not exist. How come? And why does it still show the image info.?
Where can i find those files (i have a daily backup)
The original image files are missing form your iPhoto library or iPhoto cannot find them, because the link to the originals has been broken. The image info is stored in the internal libraries, independent of the original files. That is, why you are still seeing them.
I restored the whole library from my backup.
Try restoring from an older backup, from before you first noticed the problem.
How large is the library, that you restored? Is the file size large enough to hold all your photos, or has the size been reduced?  If the library is still large, the photos may still be inside, even if iPhoto cannot find them.
It's says that file does not exist. How come?
What happened, before your iPhoto library got deleted? Which applications have you been running, or which new software have installed or upgraded?  Have you moved the library to a different disk or tried to use it from different user account or access it over the network?

If I restored my new iPhone from iCloud backup, and I delete the old iPhone backup to make room on iCloud to back up my new phone, will it delete everything on the new phone?

I have this exact same issue.  Replaced my iPhone 4s with the new iPhone 5s, setting up my new iPhone 5s to restore from iCloud.  This completed and now I am unable to delete my old iPhone 4s iCloud backup (consuming 15.1 GB of my 20GB allocation).  How can I delete it, so that I get my 15 GB back?  I am not going to invest in additional iCloud storage, because I will be 15 GB down from the off.

i am changing from an iphone 3G to an iphone 3GS and i was not offered an option to restore the new device from a backup of the old device - how do i reset the new device to allow me restore the data from the old one to the new one?

Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings.  This will return it to its new out of the box condition.  Go through the setup screens again and you will be given the option to restore from a previous iTunes or iCloud backup (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109).

  • I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud.  I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server".  Pics and videos have been deleted too.

I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud.  When I restored my phone from icloud, half of my pics and videos have been deleted, the pics that were restored on my phone are very blurry, and the videos won't play.  I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server".  I have erased and reset my phone twice, but every time I do it, more pics and videos are deleted.  I have backed up to icloud and iphoto, however, some of the pics are no longer on iphoto either.  Is there someway to get the videos to play on my phone again?  Make the photos not as blurry as they are now and to restore the pics and videos that have been lost?  I really would love to have them back, this phone is supposed to be the best and right now it doesn't seem to be.  Please help if you can.

I too have noticed that once i restored from iCloud. Pictures blurry and videos wont play!
    Need help too!!

  • Advisable to Exclude "Library" and "System" From TM Backup?

In the event I need a complete restore, can I use the Leopard install disc with the TM backup? And if this is the case, can I exclude "Library" and "System" from TM backup without harm. If there is personal info in "Library" (I have checked all the MobileMe sync options) can I retrieve it from the MobileMe cloud? Since my backup drive is same capacity as computer, my goal is to effectively economize.

Yes, as long as you DO let TM back up everything, including your OS and apps. You don't reload Leopard from the Leopard Install disc for this; you just use the installer on it to restore everything from your TM backups. See item 14 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
And if this is the case, can I exclude "Library" and "System" from TM backup without harm.
Not to be able to do a complete system restore. If you do exclude those folders, you'd have to install Leopard from your Leopard Install disc, then "migrate" from your TM backups, then download the appropriate OSX update package to get back to 10.5.7. If you decide to do this, you might as well exclude the hidden top-level folders as well.

You're not going to save much space that way, and your TM disk is probably much too small anyway. The rule of thumb here is that TM needs 2-3 times as much space as the data it's backing-up; so if your internal HD is only 1/3 to 1/2 full, you may be ok. If it's more than half full, your best bet may be to get a bigger drive. See item #1 of the FAQ referenced above for more details.

  • Manually migrating iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion..

    Hi all,
I received a shiny new iMac yesterday and in my haste to get it up and running, I began to run the migration assistant on wi-fi.  Unfortunately, my 2006 macbook model is so old that my firewire cables don't actually fit the firewire port on the back of the iMac!!
11 hours later, there was still 40 hours left to go.  At this point I manually quit the migration assistant. Partly because I have to work and to work I need to use a computer and partly because I realised that I don't want all the old crud from my previous system.. all I want is my iTunes (songs, apps, playlists etc) and my iPhoto to migrate.
The original admin account that the migration assistant was going to replace was still there.  Everything seems to be working fine... I did a quick repair of disk permissions and all seems fine.   So, I think I flirted with danger by quiting the migration assistant, but danger doesn't seem to have flirted back.
I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find any advice on migrating just your iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I did read a post somewhere (relating to a migration to Leopard) where someone wrote that, for iPhoto, you simply had to replace your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder on the destination machine and then simply start iPhoto.  iPhoto would upgrade the databases etc and all would be fine in the world.  I cannot find a post online that suggests that this is also the case for Lion.
Can anyone here give me some hints on how to manually migrate the iPhoto and iTunes libraries over (and still preserve playlists in iTunes, albums/events in iPhoto etc)?
I figure that I cannot be the only person in the world who wants a "fresh start" on their machine, with the exception of iPhoto and iTunes.

Resident apple gurus at work have advised me to use the migration assistant and plug an ethernet cable between machines.
I'll give this a go and then go through the process of removing and cleaning up whatever old data I can.. but if someone posts a response to this question for me, I'll happily roll back in time-machine and go again in a cleaner way. :-)

    As  to iPhoto
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

I'm trying to keep iPhoto and iTunes from starting up each time MacBook Pro restarts or wakes up. Any help would be appreciated.

Close the windows and quit the applications from the menubar before shutting down the computer.
System Preferences > Users & Groups > Your account > Login items.
Click the lock, authenticate and remove those applications from Login items.
    Best.

  • Reassembling iphoto library from carbonite backup

my computer HD crashed a week ago and have spent that time zeroing out and reinstalling the snow leopard OS as well as iphoto 09. i now need to import the back up of pictures from carbonite.
i know there is a major difference between the photos located in the finder and iphoto itself. i am trying to bring back all my pictures but all i think i can do is to go into my back up (Carbonite), to finder ->pictures->iphoto library - > originals, to find the individual folders that were created and download those back to my mac to then re-import into iphoto. but this all loses the way the events and albums i had in iphoto originally organized. i feel like i am reinventing the wheel? should i have backed up iphoto differently? is there a way to retrieve the original structure that i had created in iphoto?
any help would be so appreciated!

The iPhoto library is a SQL database and must be treated as a single entity - you can not restore pieces of it but must restore the entire iPhoto library as a single entity

Only by restoring the iPhoto library intact - you can not do it in pieces
