Restoring iPhoto from Time Machine. However iPhoto albums are not transfer

iPhoto albums are not transferring. I just have a bunch of photos with no albums/details/comments etc. I have done a few searches in support and have found similar problems but nothing like mine, which seems to be that I have a back up of all my photos in Time Machine but when I open Time Machine, I cannot simply select a previous restore date as I have been able to with everything else so far. I have tried dragging the whole iPhoto Library folder to iPhoto but again, end up with thousands of pictures with no albums... Any suggestions? Thanks.
It seems iPhoto is backed up but does not have several backups in Time Machine.

I think you may need to post this one on the Time Machine forum.
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1227
In later versions you can restore +to the iPhoto Library+, but as v6 predates Time Machine it's not possible to do that. Hence you need to restore an entire Library and open it.

  • Restoring Photos from Time Machine Crashes iPhoto

I am attempting to restore some photos to iPhoto from Time Machine.  I can navigate back to the time where the photos are displayed, but when I click on 'Restore' the restoration process commences but then iPhoto crashes.  When iPhoto is re-opened the desired photos have not been restored.
This is disappointing because I rely on Time Machine as my life raft after any 'human error' episodes. What is the required procedure to make this work?
    I am using OS 10.6.7, and iPhoto 7.1.5 ('08)

Since posting my original question I have followed the advice I saw for other similar postings.  I have attempted to back up using File>Browse backups..., and rebuilt the database and trashed the iPhoto preference, but to no avail, iPhoto still crashes when attempting to restore a photo.  What I haven't done is to restore the whole database from the Finder in Pictures>iPhoto.  There was conflicting advice in some of the replies that I saw so I am reluctant to attempt that.  But I am getting desperate, any advice please.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.

  • Restored from Time Machine but iPhoto library file corrupted

iMac OSX 10.9.4 crashed mid-use. Would not chime let alone re-start. Restored successfully from Time Machine and apart from Mail sending (hopefully) a few up to four year old emails again, it seemed fine. However, apart from one or two images, iPhoto (9.5.1) library was not visible in its location on an external hard drive. Inspecting Package Contents revealed that the size seemed right and the masters were present so I used Photo Library First Aid (Command Option start) to Repair Permissions and then again to Repair Database. All images and events now ok, as I believe are the locations, but the previously identified Faces are all missing. Is there a way to recover these?
I do have a separate Carbon Copy Cloner back up from the iPhoto external hard drive to another external hard drive and before, throughout and after the iMac crash, this back up process continued to operate normally. So I could try and re-store the iPhoto library from a CCC back. I just wondered if anyone knew another way that I could just repair the Faces part as the rest seems ok now.

    Hi Mr D
    Still wading through treacle!
I recall I used iPhoto Library Manager and then selected largest file size and most metadata to merge the two libraries. Still not perfect but images are there even if a few face thumbnails are absent.
Using SMART Utility I checked to see what was going on with hard drives as a CCC back up reported some deep system files were on an unreadable block. I should have replaced them from CCC but there were only a few and they were so unusual I hesitated. Whilst searching which replacement hard drive I could fit and whether I could fit it myself, iMac crashed again so another restore from TM. (According to SU my hard drive is failing as it has 6 re-allocated blocks and 1 event error). Back up and restored, I now see that various movies in iMovie '09 cannot access the source files as they are not in the original location. This I think is more to do with me relocating my iPhoto library for space reasons to an external hard drive rather than the crashes and re-builds. I hadn't realised the distinction between imported movies into iMovie '09 (from a movie camera say) and those from iPhoto (from an iPhone say) and what would happen if, for space reasons, I moved the iPhoto library to an external hard drive. Yes, I know now I should have consolidated the movies. There are occasions when a small user guide might help! Also the new iMovie '10 library, which runs as an alternative alongside iMovie '09, is happily located on the external hard drive whereas the iMovie '09 library sits on the iMac's hard drive.. All the still images are ok in all the movies in iMovie '09 (even having moved?) its just the .avi files that it cannot locate. Simples, I thought. I created a folder in iPhoto '09 with all the iPhoto avi files and thought if I exported them and then imported them into a new library in the location (my iMac user pictures folder) it would then be able to 'see' them. Problem is in the iPhoto '09 library on the external hard drive I have many more folders than in the newly created iMovie '09 library on the iMac hard drive. iMovie '09 is looking for /Users/'me'/Pictures/iPhoto library/Originals/'movie file title'/'file name'.avi but the 'Originals' folder is in fact just an alias to point to an adjacent folder in the iMovie library package called 'Masters' and in the new library I only have 'Masters' and not an alias 'Originals' folder.
So iMovie '09 still cannot 'see' the .avi files even though they are now (almost) in the right location on the correct drive (the iMac) as I don't have an 'Originals' folder in this library whereas the legacy library does. Can I get around this? Why does one library have a 'Masters' folder as well as an 'Originals' and 'Modified' aliases and the new library only 'Masters'? As I cannot re-point iMovie I need to have an 'Originals' alias pointing at 'Masters' for this to possibly work. My plan was to resolve the project issues once the files were all accessible in the correct place and then consolidate and move the iMovie '09 library as a working entity to the external hard drive where there is space.
The second issue is that of the c600 .avi files I exported (all of which function in the library from whence they were exported), 129 will not import into the new '09 library I have created on my iMac hard drive. This is odd as they are visible and play in their source library but refuse to be imported into the new one made with the same application. Other than a couple of the ones that do import showing a format in QT as 16 bit little-endian signed integer 44100Hz as opposed to 8 bit unsigend integer 16000HGz for one that didn't, I am at a loss to understand what the new library objects to.
I have now isolated all the exported .avi files that will not import into a folder pending someone hopefully providing a answer....

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • How do I open my iPhoto from time machine?

I took my Macbook Pro to the apple store last week and they said there was something wrong with my software and that they needed to wipe it clean. I said I'll bring it in next week in order to back up all my photos. So he told me to buy a hard drive and just click on "use as backup drive" and everything will be backed up. I did so, with time machine and took it back in store to get it wiped clean. I asked the person before they wiped my laptop how I would restore my iPhoto back onto my wiped clean mac and she said that all i had to do was connect the hard drive and then drag iPhoto the dock and it will copy and paste. She said it was easy as that and I was relieved. Now I'm trying to do it but I  copied my iPhoto onto the dock as she said and when i click on iPhoto it's empty. My photos are all gone. I'm really scared now because all the photos I took for the last 3 years were on that iPhoto and now I'm afraid I lost them all. Please help!

You were more than somewhat misinformed. Even if that did work it would have imported one library to another, making a significant mess of your iPhoto Library. The person who told you that needs to read some articles on how to restore from Time machine, like this one:

  • Recovering iPhoto from Time Machine - Project is not recovered, the book is

Having lost a book in iPhoto, I recovered iPhoto from Time Machine. The Project containing the book was there, but the pictures in the book were not. The pictures are in the photos section, but not in the book. I do not want to have to reload the pictures one by one. Any suggestions. Looks like a defect in Time Machine
    Richard

I just recovered a library with a couple of books in them and all photos were in the book. You might try recovering a different backup of the same library. Go backward from the time of your last attempt and then, if necessary, forward. If all fail then you've got an problem with TM and that library. Check to see if other files can be recovered satisfactorily. If you use iWeb try recovering your domain file from a time back (select the option to keep both so you don't lose your work to date).
It might be a little late, i.e. the horse is out of the barn, but you might consider using a separate library for your books. That provides a couple of benefits: 1 - working in your primarary library, deleting files, etc. will have no effect on your book; 2 - it's easy to backup and archive the book for ordering additional copies in the future. Old Toad's Tutorials #9 and 9a describe two different methods. I prefer #9a.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

I need to create a second back-up of iPhoto from Time Machine to a separate external drive.  The old iPhoto in TM will not open.  Please help!  And thank you!

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

I just replaced my hard drive and restored everything from Time machine. However, my itunes is empty.  No music, movies etc are there.  Please help thanks

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Windows images, but you get the point. Depending on the age of your library the library file might not include the .itl extention. Make it match the file you are replacing.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

  • Restoring iCal from Time Machine

I accidently deleted my calendars from iCal and then my blank iCal synced to mobileme and my iPhone so I lost everything. When I try to restore my iCal from Time Machine, it initially shows all my calendars when I open iCal, then it syncs to mobileme and I get a blank iCal again.
    Here's what I do:
    1. Quit iCal.
    2. Delete Calendar folder from Home>Library.
    3. Restore Calendar folder from Time Machine using the gear icon and "Restore to ..."
Then when I open iCal it restores perfectly, then syncs to mobileme and erases again.
After talking to an apple tech, he suggested going into iCal's preferences and deleting the mac.com and trying the above steps again. That doesn't work. I even tried going into System Preferences>MobileMe>Sync>Advanced>Reset Sync Data to replace info on mobileme with sync info from my computer. That didn't work either.
What step am I missing to restore my iCal from Time Machine?

    kanagashi,
You are welcome...thanks for your kind comments.
I'm still having sync issues with MobileMe though, the "On My Mac" calendars aren't syncing to MobileMe.
The "On My Mac" calendars will not sync to MobileMe. Did you complete Roger's checklist under the "Reconnect to the internet. Your MobileMe calendars will disappear as before. Now carry out the following process with each of the 'On My Mac' calendars:" paragraph?
Syncing should be possible after carrying out those steps.

  • Restoring files from Time Machine after installing Maverick

I have an older MacBook Pro and while installing Maverick my aged hard drive gave out. I got a new hard drive installed by an authorized Mac dealer and now I'm trying to restore files from Time Machine. I haven't done anything at all yet with Maverick. I followed the Migration Assistant directions and have the backup connected to my laptop. The backup icon appeared on my desktop. I hit continue and followed directions and reached the point where it said "looking for source" and there is a spinning ball. That was an hour ago. Is it just taking a long time to sort through the large volume of material in my Time Machine backup, or is something wrong? What should I be doing, if anything? Thank you for your help.
