Restoring iPhoto from time machine

1. is it possible to restore an event or do oy need to restore the whole iPhoto Library

If you notice the date on the previous posts you'll see that it was 2 years ago. Since then iPhoto no longer can restore individual photos, only the entire library. However there is a way to restore individual photos if you know their file name:
Restoring Individual Photos from Time Machine
1 - download and launch Find Any File
2 - enter the file name of the photo you want to restore and select the Time Machine drive
3 - in the search resuts window locate the Originals (iPhoto 8 [09]) or Masters (iPhoto 9 [11]) folder and look for the photo searched for.
4 - drag the photo to the Desktop and import into iPhoto from there.

Hard drive crashed need to restore iphotos from Time Machine

I need some serious help. I have a 24inch intel imac and my hard drive failed. I thought I had everything backed up on my external hard drive via Time Machine (my last backup was April 11th) so I replaced the hard drive.
Once I reinstalled Leopard 10.5 it asked me if I wanted to restore my data from Time Machine which I did. It seemed like it worked great but when I opened up iphoto all 43,000 pictures (cherished family pictures of our children) were gone!
iphoto still has the Event Titles, how many photos, and the sizes but they are empty with nothing but a big exclamation point. I see the iphoto library under Time machine as well but the restore is grayed out I can't even go back in time because the arrow is grayed out.
I named the new hard drive "new SG 1.0TB" and the old one was just named Macintosh HD. I read briefly somewhere that the old and new hard drives need to have the same name. Is this correct? Also does it make a difference that I had Leopard 10.5.6 when my photos were available and now I'm only on 10.5? Please help!
I had some help from another forum and he told me to look under the Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library and right click on it and select 'Show Package Contents. All the folders are there (teasing me) but there are no pictures in the folders so nothing. But I was searching again on my external time machine backup and found iphotos under time machine backups/backups.backupdp/Ryan Gunter's Computer (2)/2009-01031-002706/Macintosh HD/Users/ryang808/pictures. It had all my iphotos from 1999 until the january 2009 but everything from this date to present is not there (the folders are there but nothing in them) could they still be hiding somewhere?? And how do I get the ones I do have back in iPhoto?

sorry but, no. if they are not there there is no other place they could be. for some mysterious reason TM didn't back them up. still you should restore what you can. quit iphoto, control-click on TM in the dock and select "browse other TM disks". this will let you browse your old backups via TM interface. locate the folder Macintosh HD/Users/ryang808/pictures on january 31 backup and restore its contents to your Pictures folder. start iphoto and it should have alll those pictures.

Restore iPhoto from Time Machine Backup - Manually

Hi, my harddrive broke, I chose to start from scratch rather than do a complete restore from Time Machine. When I manually go to the Time Machine drive and copy my iPhoto library over from my user file, it copies all 14GB of it over. However when I open iPhoto - the app opens with a grey screen and the big greyscale clock meter rotating around. Stays like that for hours and no pictures.
Any ideas on what could be wrong and how to fix it?

You are victim of a bug in iPhoto 9.6 that happens when there's an interruption of the conversion process. I don't think you can restore the library at this stage. But check to make sure the Master's alias is truly an alias see where it takes you. If it's to the Old Masters folder delete the alias and rename the Old Masters folder to Masters. Then use the free, demo version of iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library as described below. It's a long shot but worth a try particularly if the Masters folder is really an alias pointing to the Old Masters folder.
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the iPLM rebuild doesn't work what is left now is to move the Masters folder to the desktop, create a new library and import the image files from that Old Masters folder. You'll have to separate them after import into the groupings that suit you meeds.

Restoring iPhoto from Time Machine. However iPhoto albums are not transfer

iPhoto albums are not transferring. I just have a bunch of photos with no albums/details/comments etc. I have done a few searches in support and have found similar problems but nothing like mine, which seems to be that I have a back up of all my photos in Time Machine but when I open Time Machine, I cannot simply select a previous restore date as I have been able to with everything else so far. I have tried dragging the whole iPhoto Library folder to iPhoto but again, end up with thousands of pictures with no albums... Any suggestions? Thanks.
It seems iPhoto is backed up but does not have several backups in Time Machine.

In later versions you can restore +to the iPhoto Library+, but as v6 predates Time Machine it's not possible to do that. Hence you need to restore an entire Library and open it.

Can't restore iPhoto from Time Machine

I have all my iPhoto (iLife 11) libraries backed up to Time Capsule. When I enter Time Machine to restore any other item (for example a Word document) it works fine. But when I try to restore an iPhoto library I get the message that I don't have permission to restore an iPhoto file. I've repaired all permissions through Disk Utility and checked all the file permissions through 'Get Info'. Only iPhoto is affected.
I saw others were experiencing difficultions and suggested opening Time Machine through iPhoto. But when I open iPhoto, and the open Time Machine the desktop is selected instead and I have to go through the Desk top on the Time Capsule to find the User-Pictures- Correct Library.
Any ideas?

As that's a permissions issue on TIme Machine I'd ask that on the TM forum for your version of the OS.

Restore iphoto from time machine backup

I know this has been posted before but I have an additional glitch. I got a new iMac with Snow Leopard. I had previously moved some photos from iphoto to my backup drive (I think through the forbidden method of going into iphoto library.) Since then those thumbnails remained but no photo available, which I did not address since I knew where they were.
After my TM restore, when I opened up iphoto it was looking for these photos and I got a popup for each one asking if I wanted to search or cancel. I did this for the first fifty or so, then gave up. I downloaded iphoto picture manager which I read about in a previous post, and rebuilt the library, but now I have zero pictures in iphoto.
Then I did a TM restore from iphoto library in finder, and seem to have restored these photos into the library, but iphoto does not see them. I still have zero photos in iphoto.
I don't remember if I for some reason changed the location of the library folder, is there some way I can check this or change this?

Restoring Photos from Time Machine Crashes iPhoto

I am attempting to restore some photos to iPhoto from Time Machine. I can navigate back to the time where the photos are displayed, but when I click on 'Restore' the restoration process commences but then iPhoto crashes. When iPhoto is re-opened the desired photos have not been restored.
This is disappointing because I rely on Time Machine as my life raft after any 'human error' episodes. What is the required procedure to make this work?
I am using OS 10.6.7, and iPhoto 7.1.5 ('08)

Since posting my original question I have followed the advice I saw for other similar postings. I have attempted to back up using File>Browse backups..., and rebuilt the database and trashed the iPhoto preference, but to no avail, iPhoto still crashes when attempting to restore a photo. What I haven't done is to restore the whole database from the Finder in Pictures>iPhoto. There was conflicting advice in some of the replies that I saw so I am reluctant to attempt that. But I am getting desperate, any advice please.

a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd. does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup? this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates! what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite. the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop. also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.

the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do. it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes. it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop? and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from? sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder. was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything. once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto. this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over. it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck. :-)

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
(1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
If that doesn't work
(2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library. What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date. If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library. Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.

1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

I got a new hard drive installed by an authorized Mac dealer and now I'm trying to restore files from Time Machine. I haven't done anything at all yet with Maverick. I followed the Migration Assistant directions and have the backup connected to my laptop. The backup icon appeared on my desktop. I hit continue and followed directions and reached the point where it said "looking for source" and there is a spinning ball. That was an hour ago. Is it just taking a long time to sort through the large volume of material in my Time Machine backup, or is something wrong? What should I be doing, if anything? Thank you for your help.

Restoring applications from time machine after a clean install of Mavericks.

I had recently upgraded from Mt. Lion to Mavericks from app store. But after few months I thought it was being buggy and slow. Last week after taking a complete time-machine backup I formatted the computer and clean installed Mavericks again. Now I am trying to restore just few handpicked applications one by one. Most of the apps are either not working or asking me for keys. Is there any other way to restore apps from Time Machine? Because all I see is that it just copy pastes the folder from the backup, and does not restore the prefe

If I were you, I would not restore your applications from the backup, more if you want the preferences back. Performance issues will be back and you may need to reformat the hard drive again.
Instead, the best thing you can do is to reinstall your applications manually, so you will not be transferrind files you do not need
