The manual and the article above will tell you about restore.
Your music and apps should be on your computer. You can sync them back.

  • Reinstalling itunes and not losing information about my music

I getting ready to reformat my hard drive and all of my music is backed up on an external hard drive. I am concerned that when i reinstall itunes on my "clean" hard drive and import all of my music, i will lose data- specifically "date added" . Is there any way to insure that I will not lose this information when i reload??

Copy the iTunes folder from where it is now and replace it/put it back where it is now after you reformat.

  • Updated Ipod 4th Gen to IOS 6 but now Itunes tells me to restore Ipod and that data could be lost should i restore, it will not let me do anything until i restore

I have an Ipod 4th Generation just now updated to IOS 6 thru Itunes, says update complete but now it tells me to restore the Ipod and data would be lost. I can not do anything till I restore Ipod and I am worried about losing games, music and other apps. Do I restore Ipod and will I lose games and music?

Do you have a current backup of the content of your iPod? If not restoring will remove Apps and their data. The Apps can be replaced at no charge but the data will be lost.

  • Can I just save my music just to my ipod and not on my computer (laptop)?

I'm still new to the ipod, so I was just wondering if it is possible to save music only to the ipod and not the computer? I've been importing music from my cd collection, and I'm starting to run out of space on my computer hard drive.

Just a word of caution. This is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See this.

The iPod is not reliable enough to use it as a long term storage device, and these forums are littered with posts from people who decided to use it as such and ended up losing all their music.

You'll need to set your iPod to manually iPod (iTunes>Preferences>iPod. Select manually manage songs and playlists).
However! you MUST have a backup of your music somewhere--especially purchased songs. Burning data CDs (not using iTunes) is one idea, burning DVDs is better (if you have the hardware for that) as you can fit more files on a DVD.

  • Restored iPod is not recognized

I just had to restore my iPod, and now afterwards my computer won't reconize it anymore. I mean like, I plug it in and nothing happens...I don't know what to do. The iPod doesn't even turn on by itself when I try to use it. Is there anyone that knows what I can do?

I am in the same situation.
New 5.5G iPod. I can connect to both of my Macs, but get the 'Can't update or restore' error messages.
The update and restore options are greyed out in the Summary screen and I only have the Music, Podcasts, and
I've tried restarting, restarting in Disk Mode, Using Disk Image to restore all to avail.
Apple tech support reccomended that I Archive and Install both Macs. That seems a little crazy to me, as I think the problem resides in iTunes 7 on the Mac.
I connected to a Windows machine, no problems. I get the update and restore options that are not greyed out and I can see all of the tabs (Music, Podcasts, Movies, Contacts, etc) in the Summary screen.
Any input would be great, thanks,
    Trevor

  • Can't restore iPod and the music I had has disappeared

My iPod 20 Go wasn't functioning very well, it often played fragments of songs and often skipped songs. And now all the music I had on my iPod has disappeared, iTunes doesn't reconise the iPod and I can't restore it. The iPod seems to be working correctly but the music is not there. In explorer I can see my iPod which seems to be working correctly, I can even open the disc manually and I found that the music that was there hasn't been deleted even if the iPod's settings say that all the 20Go are still free.
    What should I do?

You could try a format of the iPod in Windows. A full format does a check and remap of bad sectors on the iPod hard drive, and you would need to restore the iPod as normal (using the iPod updater) afterward. This can also work when the iPod is recognized by the computer, but not by the updater.
First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and that "quick format" is not checked. Now select "format". It will take a while, but when that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater.
If you need to, reset the iPod to exit disk mode.
You can also check the iPod's hard drive for errors using Windows ScanDisk.
Put the iPod into disk mode as previously mentioned. Go to "my computer" and right click on the iPod then select "properties", then "tools". Select the option to scan the disk for any errors.
To exit forced disk mode, reset the iPod.

  • Restoring IPod When Not Recognized in ITunes

On my MacBook, the Ipod icon shows up on the Desktop and in Finder but not in ITunes. The battery is charged. I can play the items on the IPod, and it appears to work normally except for the recognition problem. Plugging it into the computer even opens ITunes.
I have tried the 5Rs except for "restore." But there is a Catch 22 here. The IPod has to be recognized by ITunes in order to be restored. Is there a way to restore an IPod without going through ITunes? If there is, I have not been able to find it.

  • Lost ipod and not sure where, can an ipod be temporarily disabled ?

lost ipod but maybe at home somewhere, not sure where its been lost. can it be temporarily disabled ?, just in case it turns up

I do not know what yo mean by disabled and what model iPod y ohave:
    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.
