Restoring iPod when it doesn't connect?

I've had my Nano since March, and it's been working fine up until last week, when it stopped connecting to my computer. I've done all the steps that the support page suggests -- except restoring the iPod.
It says to open the updater, connect my iPod, and then click restore -- but the problem is that it won't connect, making it impossible for me to restore it.
Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Same here..
but i am even worse..
my 2 gig nano doesnt show up in itunes...
it shows up in My Computer as REMOVABLE DISK and when i press it it says PLEASE INSERT A DRIVE INTO DRIVE :H
no idea.....
maybe it's because i tried to install Linux on my ipod wrongly???

  • How to restore iPod when it doesn't appear in the Source List?

About 6 months ago I stupidly wiped my iPod Nano (5th Gen) and reformatted it as fat32. I assumed that when I formatted it back to Mac OS Journaled it would work normally as an iPod again but it doesn't. When it is plugged into my Mac running 10.5.8, it appears on the desktop/mac harddrive (without its individualised nano icon) and it fails to appear in the source list in iTunes (10.2.2).
I have tried everything I know how to do, including the steps outlined in this support document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410
I need to restore the iPod to factory settings, but need a way to do this not through iTunes seeing as the iPod is not recognised. Specifically, in the following support document I cannot complete step 4:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
One last thing I have tried is duplicating the files (including hidden ones) from a 5th gen nano that does appear in my source list, and placing those files into my apparently invisible nano but this has not made any difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have basically been left with a bricked paperweight (due mostly to my own stupidity!) but would love to be able to use it again.
    Thanks for any help offered

    Hello kismet_kracker,
What happens if you place the iPod into Disk Mode with it still connected to your Mac?  Does it then show up in Finder as a mounted drive?  Here are instructions for putting your iPod into Disk Mode.

  • I am having issues with streaming music from iTunes on my MacBook Pro to my audio system through AirPlay.  Works perfectly with my iPod Touch.  The AirPlay icon appears irregularly in iTunes and when selected doesn't connect.  Running latest IOS software.

I am having issues with streaming music from iTunes on my MacBook Pro to my audio system through AirPlay.  Works perfectly with my iPod Touch.  The AirPlay icon appears irregularly in iTunes and when selected doesn't connect.  Running latest IOS software.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    You said:
No, I do not want to "factory reset" my iPod. No I do not wish to do anything crazy long or hard to fix this.
That may be necessary, It is not what you want to do/not do but what is required to resolve your problem.

  • Can't restore iPod because it doesn't appear on desktop

I connected my ipod to my Mac, it showed up on the desktop but not in iTunes. The ipod window said Do not Disconnect. I waited a few minutes, then chose Eject iPod. I restarted the mac, reconnected iPod using a different FireWire port. The iPod no longer appeared on the desktop, and the Do Not Disconnect warning was still there. I switched to USB connection. No go. I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions on my HD and restarted.
I've been downloading a lot of podcasts lately, don't know if that's the cause of this problem. I'm using iTunes 7.1.1 and Mac OS 10.4.9.
I found a solution for this problem in Archives, but it's dated 12/05, and I'm wondering if it still applies. Part of the solution says to run disk utility, select the ipod, then select Format. But I don't see Format as a choice on version 10.5.6 of Disk Utility. Maybe what was Format in 2005 is now called something else? Like maybe Partition? Here's the post (by john madson) from 2005:
"i can fix this but you will need a mac let me explain
when the last system update for mac os x tiger came through after you are done installing the update the update says it is optimizing the hard drive well it optimizes the hard drive on the ipod as well and cause the internal drive on the ipod to malfunction but this isn't apples fault this is caused by user error im sorry to say
in order to fix this on the mac
    here is what you need
1.the latest apple ipod updater software (will explain why later in this)
    2. of course a apple ipod mini usb cable
    3. apple ipod mini
    4. mac os x panther or tiger
    1.start up the mac computer
    2. connect the ipod to the computer don't worry if it doesn't appear on the desktop
3.go into utilites by double clicking on the hard drive icon and select utility
    4.run disk utility
5.you will notice the ipod will apear in the disk utility program but not on the desktop
    6. select the ipod in the left pane
    7. select format
    8. tell it to format it in a mac os extended partition
9.once this is done you will notice the ipod will apear as a removable hard drive but. do not disconnect the ipod
    10. run the apple ipod updater
    11.reinstall the latest updated firmware
    12.unplug the ipod
    13. replug in the ipod
    14. you will notice the ipod will apear as a ipod icon on the desktop
WARNING:AFTER YOU FORMAT IF YOU DISCONNECT THE IPOD THIS WILL BRICK THE IPOD WHEN YOU FORMAT THE IPOD USING DISK UTILITY IT ERASES EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE IPODS OS SO YOU NEED TO RUN THE UPDATER IMMEDIATLY TO GET THE IPOD WORKING AGAIN
THE FIRST TIME THE IPOD IS RECONNECTED AFTER RUNNING THE IPOD UPDATER RE RUN THE UPDATER SELECT RESTORE THEN IT WILL FORMAT AND SET UP THE IPOD CORRECTLY

One more thing: I reset my iPod (toggled Hold, etc.). It appeared in iTunes but not on the desktop, with the message "If your experiencing problems with your iPod, you can restore its original settings by clicking restore." Which I did. Got a window asking if I wanted iTunes to check for a new software update. I said yes. Got an exclamation-point msg "There was a problem downloading iPod software. The requested resource was not found. "

  • HT1339 Want to restore iPod but it's not connecting fully to PC

Basically, I'm trying to restore my ipod back to factory settings. It's listing a bunch of artists that I have deleted from my library. When I connect my ipod to my computer it connects, and syncs (or says it is). The deleted songs can no longer be played but still appear on my ipod and my newly added songs are not getting added. And, when I go to File>Devices> The "restore" option is not available, presumably because the ipod is not connecting properly. I'm using the newest version of itunes. Any help?

I have the same problem..... had a first generation iPod.... upgraded to a newer iPod about a year ago and sometimes my Mac recognizes it, and sometimes it does not. Just installed the new upgrades and my computer will no longer recognize the iPod.... and the iPod will no longer shut off when not pluged in!!!!!! I've lost all my music and am frustrated! How do I get it to be recognized again????

  • My ipod shuffle 4th doesn't connect to itunes or windows, what can I do?

    hello,
it's been like 2 weeks since I did the update of itunes and everything to get my ipod shuffle 4th generation, and also did all the troubleshooting from the apple page, and nothing happens. It doesn't connect to itunes or windows.
anyone of you have the same problem or know how to solve it??
    thx a lot!!

I'm having the same problem, my brand new Ipod shuffle isn't recognized by my pc, or Itunes. I have tried everything suggested in troubleshooting. Did I just waste $50 on something that doesn't work? I'm afraid if I send the Ipod back for another one I will have the same problem. Any suggestions ?

There have been some problems accessing pages on the Apple web site.  If the hyperlink gives you a "We're sorry" message, try again.

  • Tried to restore iPod nano and keep getting connect to iTunes

Have not used my nano in some time. connected it to computer and at first it was recognized, but when I went to restore to factory settings i got an error message and now a message on the iPods screen says to connect to iTunes to restore. My computer is no longer seeing this iPod and i have tried everything to shut it off by holding power button down and it appears frozen.  My warranty and support has been expired for some time. Is it trash? or does anyone know what I could do. I don't want to pay the 29.00 incident fee if I don't have to.

Try putting it in Disk Mode
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on the computer and connect iPod.  iTunes should prompt you to do a Restore.  Hopefully, the iPod will function properly after this Restore.

  • Trying to restore ipod from icloud backup "trouble connecting to the server"

I'm attempting to restore my son's iPod Touch from his iCloud backup. It's connecting to WiFi just fine, then I tell it that I need to restore from iCloud backup, and it asks me to sign him in.
When I sign him in, it seems to accept it, then goes to the "Birthday" screen and asks for his birthday. When I put in his correct birth date, it then takes me to the "Terms and Conditions" screen, and I accept that.
The very next thing I see is a popup that says "Could Not Sign In. There was a problem connecting to the server."
Every time. No explanation of what this means.
I apologize if this has been answered already, but I've googled it and searched it in these forums for days with no real luck.
Anyone who can help, I appreciate it!

After two hours I learned that they "birthday" question is a creating a bug on itunes account server. In order to fix this problem you will need to go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and put another birthday date that is not the original birthday date you submitted. Pick a birthday that allows you to update your account. As soon as you do that and save it to your account the problem seems to be fixed.

  • Restore iPod when it's not recognized?

    Hello:
I'm having the same problem a lot of people are having - my computer is not recognizing my iPod. This is a new problem, as I've had both for about 3 years and love them to pieces. I faithfully update the software for both.
I want to do the disk utility, I want to restore my iPod, etc., but I can't do either of these things because even though my iPod is happily charging (connected to my computer as I type), my computer and iTunes refuses to acknowledge its existence.
Any advice? And, when is Apple going to come up with a solution? And how will they let us know? Should I just buy a new iPod already?
    Thank you for your help...

  • New ipod nano 4gen doesn't connect to computer, or itunes!!!

i just got a new ipod and when i connected it my computer said new software connected, and had "install" or "install later". i clicked install and it said software for download could not be found.
i thought because it wasn't fully charged yet, so i let it charge.
i disconnected it and tried again, the same thing happened.
i then went to "my computer" and it didn't show up there either. then i went to itunes and there it didn't say anything.
my sister has the older ipod nano and i used the same cord and it connected. so its not the cord, or itunes because hers shows up.
i then went to my aunts house and tried to install it there. it actually did show up on her computer, but it didn't fully register because her itunes won't connect to her internet access.
I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO DO NOW! PLEASE HELP ME!

Same problem. Mine just flashes the Apple logo when connected. I've tried all the suggested methods that you have aswell. NO warranty, what now? Any luck with you?
