Restoring iTunes after computer failure.

Hi,
I am just setting up my new Windows 7 PC after the complete failure of my old XP PC.
I have a decent set of backups (but not an iTunes specific backup) and I have basically set up my data as it was on the old PC (same driveletters etc). I have loaded iTunes and it seems to be working OK - apart from the fact that it is empty.
I think that all I need to do is to copy the old My Music info (iTunes + extra library info) into the Music library and I should be back where I started. As a precaution, I would obviously save a copy of what is there currently.
Please advise.
It would also be helpful if you could suggest a more iTunes specific backup strategy additional to what I already do.
Thanks.

sorryociffer,
The backup you see taking place only copies certain information, and in general shouldn't be considered a primary back up of data.
iPhone and iPod touch: About backups
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
To back up the iPhone data, sync the iPhone data to other programs on your computer (following article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386 ) and then back up all of the data on the computer to a dedicated back up device, like an external hard disk drive for example.
This article here provides basic information on creating data backups: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
The message you're encountering is expected behavior. An iPhone and an iPod are only meant to be synced with one iTunes library at a time: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1209
In this case, Apple does give you the ability to copy over iTunes Store purchases to an authorized computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Beyond that, there are other non-Apple programs that claim to give you the ability to copy all of your music, and possibly other data from your iPhone to your computer. It's pretty easy to find one when using an online search engine, like Google, Yahoo, or AOL.
Hope this helps,
Raleigh

  • Restoring iTunes after computer crash

One day, I hooked my iPod up to my computer and it told me that a couple hundred songs were not authorized to play on this computer. Then it removed them from my iPod, but left them in iTunes. Those songs were every single purhcase I had ever made on iTunes.
Later that day, my computer started freaking out. I made a copy of that purchased music to CD, and a few minutes later, my computer crashed and burned.
After reinstalling Windows XP Professional, I imported the burned music into iTunes. However, when I hook up iPod to the computer, it tells me that iPod can only sync to one library at a time, and do I want it to erase everything on the iPod (all of my music that wasn't purchased at iTunes) and overwrite it with everything on my current library. I tell it no, because I don't want it to erase everything on the iPod.
So how do I get to it actually "sync" by adding what's on my iPod to my iTunes library, and what's in my iTunes library to my iPod, without having to erase everything on my iPod?

"how do I get to it actually "sync" by adding what's on my iPod to my iTunes library, and what's in my iTunes library to my iPod....."
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, the transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

For more on the new function in iTunes 7 look under under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
"....without having to erase everything on my iPod?"
If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Restoring itunes after a crash

    Hi, fellow itunes users!
A few months ago,I expierenced some major crashing problems. My computer went down, and I lost ALL of my files and docs, including itunes!
If you have any tips on how to restore it, that would be great!

Help! I think my Dell laptop memory maxed out while playing Holiday playlist, iTunes started skipping, so I closed everything out and powered down. This morning, iTunes came up totally empty, no playlists, nada... I did the restore iTunes library procedure a couple times, no luck either. I do have a remote HD with all music files backed up but don't think I have iTunes library files backed up. I might have prior iTunes library files from several years ago, but I've added tons of music and customized playlists in recent years. I suspect iTunes bonked when memory ceiling was reached, so I relieved the memory space condition. How do I restore my vast playlists? Any help much appreciated at Holiday time..

  • Lost all my music in itunes after computer crash

Lost all my music in itunes when computer crashed.  itune store doesn't show all my purchases.  How do I get all my music back?

Browse your iTunes folder.  Do you have files in folder in your media folder?  In other words, did you really lose the media or did iTunes just lose track of it?
Of course you have a backup you make of your computer before doing any major updates, right?

  • Lost purchased iTunes after computer system restore

How can I retreive purchsed iTunes that I lost after I had my computer system restored? I re-loaded the iPod + iTunes disc and non of my songs seem available to me.

That is going to depend on what you mean by "restore". If you formatted your hard drive and did not have a backup then the music files are gone and you will have to re purchase them all. Same thing if you
If you still have your music files all you need to do is add them to iTunes. Go to File > Add Folder to Lib... and point to where the files are.
If you believe you still have the music files but do not know where they are try doing a search for *.m4p, or *.mpb, or *.mp3. If the files are still on your hard drive then that should find them.

  • Nano only recognized by iTunes after computer restart(with nano connected)

My brand new Nano just wouldn't connect to iTunes. I tried various things for about 2 hours. At one point it actually did connect to and sync with iTunes, but iTunes froze when I clicked the "eject ipod" button. From there on I couldn't reconnect to iTunes. After an exhausting amount of uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes and following apples suggestions I took my 8gb Nano to an Apple store. They couldn't figure it out either and actually DOAed it.
Just by chance when we restarted my laptop, the new Nano was already connected so iTunes immediately opened and syncd with it. At that point, both myself and the "Genius" at the Apple bar concluded the first one was just bad and that this one is ok.
While at home later that day, I had connection issues once again(windows sees it but not iTunes). This is when I figured out that I can ONLY connect to iTunes when I Turn on/Restart my computer while my Nano is connected to the USB port.
I'm using Windows Xp Home. I have the latest edition of iTunes and the Nano is up to date as well.
One last note; I used the following page to free up my system from "mostly unneccessary" services.
    http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm
I might have disabled a service that iTunes/ipod needs running.
If anyone has had or heard of this problem before or sees a service on that page that might be affecting my computer, please let me know.
    Presario V3000Z   Windows XP

I missed a comment in my previous post. In msconfig I had some services not checked and I turned them all on, including the Portable Media Service number service.
I just rebooted with that one unchecked and it had no effect.
So I would recommend having all the services checked in msconfig. One other thing you can do is compare your services list to mine. I'll include some information below. Let me know if you can determine if one of these is the culprit.
In Program Files>Accessories>System Tools> System Information you can see the running processes and other things. See if these are similar to yours. Hopefully the formatting will be correct here:

  • Reward offered for helping me restore ITUNES after a crash

please help. I have looked everywhere on my PC and am using windows XP. It tells me it has been defaulted to a MY MUSIC folder but cannot find that either. Please. If you can help restore my ITUNES I will make it worth your time. I have paypal. thanks. I will be more that happy to reward some one. Am at wits end.

I remember a lot of the songs I had. I did not know the computer had a problem (ITUNES was open at time of crash)and I saw that the screen was blue and had writing on it. I decided to shut it down. After 5 minutes I rebooted and discovered my itunes library had vanished. The logo is still on the desktop but all it says is that itunes cant be found unless you go to default MY MUSIC folder. It wasnt there. Jeff

  • How to restore itunes after hard drive crash

How do you restore your itunes library after my PC hard drive crashed?

    Hi Toboggan,
If you are looking to restore your iTunes data from a backup, you may find the following article useful (while it is focused on moving between computers, many of the steps should also apply to your situation):

  • How do I restore iTunes after a Mac crash (and Apple ID change)?

    Hi
Can anyone please help me with some advice about how to restore my iTunes purchases after my Mac crashed. Its a bit more complicated than it sounds given that I changed my Apple ID about 18months before the crash. All purchases under the current Appled ID have been restored. However, everything that I bought under my first Apple ID has not been restored.  How can i get this fixed?
    Thanks
    S

  • Using iphone to restore itunes after installing an old TimeMachine backup?

    Hey everyone,
    Here is my problem:
After a hardware problem I had to install a new hard drive in my MacBook. I used Time Machine to reinstall my system. Of course my back up was about a year old, and I lost all the music I added since then.
While this is fine (I just have to add the cds again), is there a way to retrieve from my iphone (which is synced with my system and itunes before the HD crash) the playlists, song counts, ratings, etc.?
Also, if I just plug in my iphone (which I am now super scared to do) will it just erase everything (including all downloaded apps) and just sync it with my "old" system?
Sorry if this post is a little confusing and if this was addressed somewhere else before.
Do not hesitate to ask for clarification, and thanks already for any help!

If your iPhone is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. Open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok.
If at any point you get a message that your iPhone is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your phone.
iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPhone or iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

  • How do I restore iTunes after after updating to 10.7.3?

after updating to 10.7.3 my iTunes could not locate my music library. How do I restore it?

First, where was your old library located? In the default location on the internal drive?  If it was on the internal drive, do you still see your media there? Do you see your library file?
Here's how things should look if you were using default settings. If you had customized iTunes then you will be the only one who knows where the files should be and if they are still there:
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management
iTunes 9: Understanding iTunes Media Organization - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3847

    see also:
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536
If you do not see your media or library files or any of this anywhere on your drive then you will have to start from scratch again unless you have a backup.  Always back up before installing any major software.

  • Restore iTunes after clean install

    Hi,
I'm thinking of doing a clean install of ML beacuse of some issues with the computer. After the install I only want to get my iTunes library and play counts etc back to the computer. How do I do that? Can I use a Time machine backup or do I have to copy the iTunes library. And do I have to unauthorize the account on the computer and after the install authorize it again?

Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
Backup iTunes to an External Drive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes.
